Wow this is completely unexpected. Welcome to big time college football, Lincoln. Columbus welcomes you on September 9th.
The world is yours
This is out of nowhere isn't it? He wasn't in a particular hotseat was he? There wasn't some ongoing investigation or whatever was there?
He hasn't been having some sort of health problem has he?
You've got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.
I'm curious about the reason(s) and timing. Completely out of left field on this one.
Below someone is saying he'll stay on in some capacity so it wouldn't be flat out fired for wrongdoing or poor performance.
Rumors of heart issues so he wanted to quit before it got worse.
Isn't he a convicted felon? Well, he should be.
24/7 says it is not for health. I find it slightly suspicious too. One hell of a run he had, even if that conference doesn't play defense.
I read yesterday on CBS Sports, later in the day after this one, that he is staying at OU as a special assistant to the AD. So they will pay him a bunch of money for him to tell them what to do. That also makes me think there is nothing suspicious about his sudden retirement. He had enough. That is all.
My first thought was some sort of Mixon type situation is about to come to light.
Maybe but that doesn't seem right. Why would he be fired before having a chance to handle it? And the school wouldn't go about it like this. You don't fire the coach before there is a scandal like that without reporting the scandal as well. Part of the point with firing a coach in that situation is to virtue signal.
I was thinking more along the lines of a Mixon type thing happened, and Stoops was already considering leaving to legitimately retire and live life, so that was enough to decide to pull the trigger.
When put that way I see where you're coming from and agree. If leaving is already calling you something like that would easily push you over the line. Have an UV.
This has become my favorite gif of all time... congrats on beating me to posting it (though, its worth seeing again).
Me too Keister...I could never figure out how to post on here, but text it all the time. I laugh literally every time I see it.

Old news, next.
It doesn't matter whether you're the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.
Does that hurt or help the Buckeyes.... the judges are out....

Helps us win. Hurts us in Voters eyes. Helps us in recruiting, I think.
Hurts us in Voters eyes
Love that Franklin GIF
Well with Mack out of the running, Stoops is now the frontrunner to be our next coach. At least he can recruit.
I'd say you copied my gif, but this thread deserves about 10 of these.
I'd say you posted yours 12 seconds before mine and I had to go to a meeting and couldn't change it.
What do you think about Brad Stevens coaching Ohio State though?
We will now wait for the rest of the story.

My first thought as well, and second goes to some sort of scandal because we can't seem to escape those lately either.
When I was 6 I was thinking about this rivalry. This one is seared on your soul, It's ingrained through every part of your body. -Urban Meyer
Why can't a guy just retire because he wants to?
You are right, but these days, that is hardly ever the case.
"Because the rules won't let you go for three." - Woody Hayes
THE Ohio State University
Valid point, but there are probably $5M reasons per year to keep punching the clock.
Plus, there's the principal of "things usually end badly, otherwise they wouldn't end"; so people naturally want to speculate about the "badly".
But, if he's getting out because he's had enough fun for one career, then good for him; I hope he enjoys phase 2.
Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.
That's the first place my head went and seems the most likely since there doesn't seem to be some sort of "smoke" around his program.
According to ESPN Stoops said that it is not related to his health.
This is huge. Does he cool his heels with us as a "Special Assistant" for a year while we clear a coaching spot for him? There must be some serious NCAA stuff coming down the pipe. He needs to rebuild his rep.
Why the hell would he hang out with us for a year before coming on as an assistant...? He's a first ballot HOF coach, he doesn't need to "rebuild his rep".
There must be some serious NCAA stuff coming down the pipe.
I will bet you three dollar and fiddyfive cent that that is not the case.
Retiring or fired?
That was my first thought too, but he is staying on with Oklahoma in some capacity according to ESPN and the Oklahoman (whatever that is).
Stoops, who will remain with OU in some capacity, according to the Oklahoman
That suggests "Not fired/forced to resign" and "not a scandal/wrongdoing."
Yeah, I figured it was more his decision. In all honesty it's probably best for both sides that he did this, their recruiting has been mediocre at best the last 5 years and he's not winning the big games anymore.
You mean like the Sugar Bowl six months ago...? Or when he smacked around Bama a few years ago?
Oh right, I forgot they whooped up on 8-5 Auburn in the sugar bowl.. that must have been satisfying for their fans.. Ill give you the Alabama game, that was a really good win for him, that was probabaly his last really good moment/team at OU.
He won the Big 12 twice since then. Two conference titles in the past two years is more than we've managed in the last 7.
How many conference titles is he winning coaching in the same conference as Urban? Probably zero. I'll take our 1 national title 3 years ago, over his back-to-back BIG 12 titles.. I mean, The BIG 12 has been absolutely terrible over that time span, Texas hasn't been Texas in years, who's even the second best team in that conference?
How many conference titles is Dantonio winning in the same conference as Urban?
For that matter, how many conference titles is Urban winning in the same conference as Urban?
Not a put-down, just giving a little perspective.
Seems like a put down to me.
People for some reason think im terrible for thinking that Stoops' best years are behind him. He's not the coach he was 5 - 10 years ago, he was a great coach for alot of years, but their program could use a boost right now.
Lol have you even watched the BIG 12 the last handful of years? winning it isn't something to hang your hat on.. it's pretty terrible.
It's still a Power 5 conference. It's an impressive thing to do.
I don't think recruiting is the issue: http://stormininnorman.com/2017/02/02/oklahoma-football-recruiting-class...
That was his first top 10 class in 7 years.. and it was a 27 man class.. they've been ranking in the 15-20 range for years. That's not very good for a program like OU.. especially since Stoops was bringing in top 5 classes pre 2010.
Like Matta, Stoops' best years were behind him but no way OU fires him, at least not for on the field performance. He was still winning meaningless B12 championships and 10+ games a season. That's good enough at OU I think.
well that came out of nowhere.
Weird timing. There's always a hidden story in the Big XII. Can't wait to hear about this.
Interesting article posted May 20 on Coach Stoops' real estate portfolio, wonder if his agent is getting him lined up for a B1G Network gig?
Why would he give two shits about the B1G? If he was doing any tv work, Fox would have him on every Big 12 broadcast they had.
Pure speculation based on the purchase of two homes in Chicago, his wife's purported love of the city and the B1G network's proximity thereto
Hope its not health. Maybe it's kind of like Urban Meyer after 2010. The lifestyle wears on you.
He must have seen some practice footage of the Ohio State D-Line this year
Oklahoma commitment TJ Pledger, doesnt appear there was any notice given to commits. https://t.co/tPyk3OiRCb

Looks like Stoops had all of tOSU that he cares to last year and ducked out just in time to avoid the clash at The Shoe in September!
Sounds pretty BASIC to me but here's to hoping they still bring their backup QB so when the Silver Bullets get done with Mayfield, there's someone else to step in...
"Defiance in Silence"
And....... Hide Kevin Wilson and Greg Schiano too ! :)
....."'cause they hiring everybody out there!"
Oklahoma247 reporting that Stoops was diagnosed with a heart condition about a month ago .
Reporter who broke the story pointed out his father died at age 54 on the practice field.
Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
Easy to understand how that can impact your thought process.
The ironic thing is that I'll bet there are some 80-year old former coaches out there, who wish they'd died on the practice field.
Florida truthers can offer pointers on how to disparage Stoops and claim he's faking.

Feed the trolls
Sort of wish the article said that he'd reportedly already told his team. There were likely rumblings about this among the players, some warning signs to those on the inside, but I'd hate to think that I got news of Stoops' retirement before some of his players.
or that they read it on a website instead of getting to hear it from him. Pretty big news to have to get second-hand.
"Woody would have wanted it that way"
Couldn't agree more
I thought the same thing. Everybody is out for the "scoop" but sounds like the guy was told, "this is happening later today" and wanted to be the first to tell everyone rather than wait until the time he was told it was happening.
What is going on in the coaching world. I would not be shocked if Coach K quite tomorrow at this rate.
Life comes a day at a time, enjoy it.
Slow down with the Coach K talk. That would truly set the world on fire. There is a generation of talented, entitled, d-bag basketballers who happen to be white that would have nowhere to go without him. They would just aimlessly roam the country being pricks.

"I spent 90 percent of my money on women and drink. The rest I wasted." - George Best
Great call! 9 minutes in I checked and it had 9 DVs , nailed it !
It's obviously sarcasm with as far as it was taken. Nobody needs to get their undergarments in a knot.
Whoa....DV'd into greydom for that?! I didn't even realize this was a hot take. Well, it appears that after almost 7 mediocre years on this site, the 11W commenting game has passed me by. I'm going to follow Matta's and Stoops' lead and tomorrow Jason Priestas and I will be holding a press conference to announce my retirement from this site. Unlike those two coaches, however, I will not remain involved in a consulting capacity. I will just create a bunch of phantom accounts which I will use to sneakily downvote my enemies.
But seriously...Allen, Laetner, Reddick, Parks, Wojciechowski. That's basically a hall of fame starting five of talented, entitled dbag basketballers.
Don't make racist comments if you don't want DVs. Don't whine about getting DVs on your racist comments if you don't want more DVs. This information is clearly stated in the comment policy: "If you have a great comment, expect to earn stickers. If you say something dumb, expect to lose stickers."
Hope he's healthy. Coaches at that level sacrifice a lot for their profession. Hope he enjoys the time away.
Wow. Woodbey might be less likely to flip now. Maybe we can poach a few recruits too.
"The future is bright at Ohio State."
"Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends"
They've got one 5* and one 4*. The 5* is a huge OT that's from Oklahoma and has been committed for 2 years, so he's probably staying regardless. The 4* is a RB, which we don't really need.
Selfishly, I thought first of Woodbey/Proctor...
reading the comments about a heart condition, I just hope he's ok. I've always like him and his teams. Never did anything to dislike him, plus his troll jobs of the SEC were great.
Everybody wants to be heard, and the easiest way to be the loudest is to be the hater

"Great moments are born from great opportunities." - Herb Brooks
The timing is odd, but I think leaving on your own terms is always better than being forced out.
Urban reached out to Stoops to get better work-life balance. Stoops seems like a level-headed guy that realizes his time has come. More power to him.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
Yes, it is a bit odd timing for the coaching world, but there is never a bad time to take control of your life. He's been at it for a long time, is undoubtedly set for life, so why shouldn't he enjoy his success. There are a lot of ex-coaches that should have done likewise while they still had their health and their reputations. I second the vote: more power to him.
My aim, then, is to whip the Weasels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom. - William Tecumseh Sherman (with apologies)
Browns next year: 2-14
Browns next next year: Coach Bob Stoops
Lifetime vs. UM: L 8-1, C 7-0, T 4-0
Browns next year: 2-14
Yep. In 7 years they'll be 8-8.
Wow, wants to go live life. Has heart problems and wants to or will move to Chicago? So.... death by heart or death by lead poisoning? I see Lincoln Riley as a plus but young. He lets his qb's get off the script to much and it cost him at ECU and Oklahoma. If he reals that in he should be fine. I begged for him when Herman left, we got Beck. Look for Ruffin McNeil to come help him out. Going to be interesting.
The only true worry we should have about this 2019 team is this:
Why is Sevyn Banks wearing number 12?
Stoops wants out before Urban hands him another beat down in week 2.
I hope he is healthy, and enjoys retirement. Some guys get burned out and get tired of the grind.
I'll always remember fondly the way he beat Alabama's ass in the Sugar Bowl.
Breaking News: Gene Smith hires Bob Stoops to coach OSU basketball.
Osu by 14 plus
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
I'll take the over on that.
Crazy how many coaches have won a NC in their second year coaching, and then, that's it.
Barney Fife lives, and he lives amongst us.
Trying to think of some: Stoops, Chizik, Tressel, Fisher (still coaching). Who else?
Crazy how many coaches have won a NC in their second year coaching, and then, that's it.
And ironically enough, it's usually with their predecessor's players.

Thats incredible, and likely 3 of those 4 will be in the playoffs this year.
Can't be right....the 2nd highest paid coach isn't listed there....
Thought he just came off of NDs books...
Interesting timing. Big 12 (or whatever they call themselves these days) seems like a fairly easy conference to win 10 games in....oh well - best of luck to boomer sooner in retirement!
PS - Gold Coast of Chicago is a little more pricey then Norman.....
I think Lincoln Riley will do well there. Will be a big test for him stepping into Stoops' shoes.
Ill never forgive him for allowing mixon back on the team and I think it really will tarnish his legacy, but I wish him luck in the future.
So multiple reports are that lincoln riley is replacing Stoops, anyone hear who is replacing lincoln? I definitley think this makes it easier to beat them come fall. What do you guys think?
I don't believe that Bob called any plays on offense or formations on defense, so there shouldn't be much of a change schematically. If Riley relinquishes play calling duties then it could be a huge advantage for us. might also be a slight disadvantage since we won't have much game film on the tendencies of the new offensive coordinator.
In the end, I think Riley will do excellent in Norman.
Ideally you want your coordinators calling the plays with input from the head coach. Im sure they will run Lincoln's Air raid system but as we know all to well who calls the plays can make a very big difference in the output of your offense. IMO the most important people on a team isnt the quarterback its the head coach and the coordinators. So I well defintley be watching with great interest to see who they pick.
I'm gonna miss Big Game Bob
Quick Billy Donovan, sneak out while the Oklahoma media isnt looking.

16-2 is SWEET!
get the popcorn ready....
Good luck and good health to him. He's one of those coaches that I just can't bring myself to root against too often, especially with the SEC trolling he did.
I survived Cooper, and I hate Tai Streets.
next up Hairball runs away!!!
And now Kirk Ferentz is the longest tenured CFB coach and the only one who was under contract in the 20th century.
The offseason is the longest season.
Kirk Ferentz is the only coach on this earth that can go 500, get a raise, and win a B1G coach of the year all in the same year. So peculiar.
And after OSU manhandles Iowa this fall, Kirk will probably win the COY award again.
Yeah, and we all know he's not going anywhere.
Locked down till 2025 I think.
Oklahoma probably has some quality recruits. Anything we could flip to benefit us ?

Wonder how much a certain new coach at Texas influenced this
Stoops has outlasted about 20 different "hot new up-and-comers", I doubt he loses any sleep over Herman.
Not saying it was the reason he retired, but I don't think Herman is just any "hot new up-and-comer". He just beat Stoops last year and is already recruiting well ahead of him. I'm sure when considering the difference between retiring now and retiring in a few years, Herman at least entered his thoughts.
Bob Stoops to become the head coach of The Ohio State Buckeyes Basketball team.
HOLY SHIT... that is a jaw dropper
The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced
Well that was totally unexpected. Surprised he didn't want to make one last run with Mayfield.

Gameday come week September 9th is going to require some more creativity when it comes to sign making.
Didn't see this coming.
But hey, he's earned it - helluva run, coach.
Lastest report says he's stepping down because he really wants to coach Ohio State's basketball team.
edit: Dang it...Hockey Buck beat me to it
I'm not finished! Before we let you leave, your commander must cross that field, present himself before this army, put his head between his legs, and kiss his own arse.
Plot Twist. Oklahoma hires Bo Pelini
Always liked Bob. Minus the Mixon situation, he was a class act always good for a few nice quotes.
Props to a native son of Ohio for a great coaching career and hoping for a happy and relaxing retirement. You've earned it Bob.
Now, let's go get Billy D.
I think this is a blessing for OU. That program was going nowhere under Stoops.
YOU SIT THERE AND YOU THUMP YOUR BIBLE AND YOU SAY YOUR PRAYERS AND IT DIDN'T GET YOU ANYWHERE!!! TALK ABOUT YOUR PSALMS TALK ABOUT JOHN 3:16.... AUSTIN 3:16 SAYS I JUST WHIPPED YOUR ASS!!!!!
I heard from someone who knows someone else close to someone else at the program ....he will be joining his brother at Kentucky to be the new Dringus Coordinator....
Always liked Stoops in how he would ruffle SEC feathers. He was probably the best coach for Oklahoma in the new age of college football. Alot of 10+ win seasons in not exactly a recruiting hotbed when you consider all the Texas schools were thinning their recruiting stock in recent years (TCU, Baylor((not as much now)), A&M, Houston, Texas and now with Morris running the show SMU to some extent). Hope the best for him in retirement.
Does anyone else find this as fishy as Joe Paterno allowing Jerry Sandusky's 'young friends' traveling with and rooming with his team to bowl games?
What? Why? And How? You go 11-2 win your conference and the Sugar Bowl and bring back your third year starting QB and THEN...retire...mid-June?
The only good thing about The Game is winning it - Urban Meyer
Can he coach basketball? ? ? :-)
