Mayfield will play but it will not matter. Oklahoma just does not have the size and physicality to match OSU, and their defense is soft. On top of that, Mayfield's top target and their two excellent RBs are all gone. Mayfield will make some plays, but the pressure of having to keep them in the game single-handedly will lead to some mistakes, and our elite front 7 will keep pressure on him all game, and will slow down their running game.
On the other side, I expect a sharp game from Barrett and a good game by Weber. I just don't see them slowing us down, and Mayfield cannot beat us himself. Oklahoma is just not on our level.
Ohio State 41
"Since the close of the 2016 season, Mayfield had some off the field issues."
He'll have even bigger issues ON the field coming into the Shoe in prime time.........

The glaring stats from the list for OSU are passing offense and punt return yards. Also, it's huge credit to the defense to have controlled an OU offense that ranked in the top five nationally for three offensive categories and not less than 30th in any of them.
Despite the optimism for our defense this coming season, it is hard for me to believe that we could improve on the stats from last year: top 7 in five of the seven categories and not less than 20th in any.
I see Ohio State beating Oklahoma worse than last season. Buckeyes win 49-17.
Nice write-up Remy.
While we got to joke a lot about Oklahoma, that was a quality win last year over a team that otherwise had a very good season. Looking forward to seeing that magic repeat this year. It will be interesting to see if any of those boys have any trash talk in them leading up to the event.
I think this is a good game. Our DBs will need a few more games until things are where they will be elite. 24-17 on a turnover or two. I need to see our passing game improve in a game instead of in the press.
Remy just delivers
Looking forward to the opportunity of delivering you a cold drink or two. Hopefully our paths will cross in the next few months.
grab your clubs, lets go! or hell, leave the clubs and we'll skip golf and go straight to the bar, you pick
Let's do this. My schedule opens up in two weeks.
my next 4 weekends are booked with either golf trips, out of towns guests or trips out of town. June 10th weekend im free if that one works for you.
Matt - great stuff - love the cold hard facts. We gave everything we had in last years Oklahoma game. We'll need the same type of effort this year.
Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
I will worry because OU has talented players. A couple bad bounces and the game could turn. OU was having success moving the ball last year at times.
They got down to the 10 on the first drive and missed a FG
I also seem to recall their TE dropping a ball on either that drive or later for a big play that may have led to a TD.
Those 10 points early on in the game would have kept the crowd in it and given some confidence to OU.
I'm certainly not predicting a 30 point win in week 2
Let's not forget, as bad as we beat them down last year with the youngest team in America, in their house, on the road... we took a knee 3 straight times inside their 10 yard line to run out the game. They had and still have no answer for Ohio State's physical brand of football. Barring a mass exodus of half our roster, way too much talent, FAR superior recruits brought in, FAR superior off season ninja warrior training by Mariati of the young Bucks, FAR supieror facilities, much improved coaching changes and UFM. Enough said, gap has widened further and Oklahoma might as well not even show up as a beat down is coming. Even worse!
Go Bucks and michigan STILL SUCKS!
Forgot to add one OU TD and extra point shoulda never been on board as Mixon clearly dropped ball on TD before crossing the goalie and it wasn't reviewed. So margin was actually/shoulda been worse
Let's do the double on them.
"porque las estirpes condenadas a cien años de soledad no tenían una segunda oportunidad sobre la tierra."
Nice work Remy
Go Buckeyes Beat Michigan
Perine and Mixon in the NFL is going to devastate them; that whole offense was built around those two, especially the coverage looks Westbrook got because safeties had to cheat to help linebackers. OSU is probably going to wallop them this time around.
A man got to have a code...
Wonder if Mayfield had to enter concussion protocol from that cop slamming his head into the cement.
Only thing that concerns me about this game is our young secondary. How many times did Conley and Lattimore bat away passes vs. OU in last year's game? If our DBs struggle in the IU game I am going to become all sorts of worried about OU.

It's concrete. Cement is a powder and just 1 of the ingredients. The Beverly Hillibillies cement pond was actually a concrete pond.
At least we still have Jerome Baker. I recall he had a pretty slick play against Mayfield last year.
Off a tipped pass by Jalyn Holmes, who's also back. If we can find another CB and safety, this defense could be better than last year's despite losing three 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick.
Even though Wilson's in Columbus and not there--how weird do you think that will be for him?--IU should be a nice tune-up for Oklahoma.

I would love to see the defense improve on what was an excellent season last year but losing 3/4ths of the secondary to the 1st round of the NFL draft will be tough. Not impossible but tough. I can actually see more improvement stats wise from the DL, sacks, TFL's, and pressures) and not quite as many INT's from the secondary.
Oklahoma recruits on a good level but reloading doesn't happen like it does under one of the best coaches in the game.

I'll always remember the play where Lattimore baited Mayfield into an interception. Hoping Denzel Ward gives us an encore of that this year.
Here's hoping defense stays strong and the offense gets better than the averages last season.
I hate the offseason.
Waiting for my tickets now! Excited to go to this one!
They had a big D-lineman we recruited a while back. Can't remember his name but was wondering if he is still on the team and if he ever lived up to the hype?
Neville Gallimore. Redshirted his first year. Started 6 games last year and appears to have been a decent contributor.
Go Bucks, Deacs, Panthers, Braves
Thank you deacBuck, I couldn't remember his name. Sounds like he might have a big year. Let's hope it's not against us.
Ohio state will win but it won't be pretty, I'll even say that we'll win because of our defense. Bucks win 31-16 despite OU having more passing and total yards. Defense score 1 TD and forces another turnover to give JT a short field.
"Championships aren't won on Saturdays, they're won on Tuesdays in August" Kerry Coombs
Kyler Murray will probably be the starter after game 1.
WOW - calling your shot - I like it. My guess is that Mayfield will prolly sit game one versus the Miners of UTEP
thought was I was gonna be laughed outa the forum saying that
I predict I will be there. First game back in Cbus since 12-0 season and beating Michigan. I also predict drinking. Lots of drinking...
OU is not going to just roll over and play dead after our win last year. They will come in motivated and well-planned, like Boise State would do with their one meaningful showdown every year.
I predict an offensive shoot-out with the Bucks coming out on top, e.g. 42-35
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"

Home opener at The Shoe - high profile opponent - Saturday night - nationally televised. All things point to a great deal of motivation and an amped up atmosphere.
Offense: Control LOS - high percentage passes, accurate and on-time - pound the ball!
Defense: Dominate the OL with the quickness and toughness - 3-4 QB sacks - less than 200 passing & 100 rushing.
Overall preparedness: Obtain and study in depth the Fayetteville PD film. That doesn't get old!
defeated Arizona 27-17 in Tuscon
Though I'm not too big of a fan of our little brother to the south it's spelled Tucson not Tuscon.
I know: it's all Favred up.
Tuscon - isn't that out on the Junland Waste?
I suspect the Okies will be well up for this game, much to the surprise of the natives
The Buckeyes' D line might just be the best and deepest in Coach Meyer's tenure at OSU, and that group I think will play a major factor in the game. They should harass Baker Mayfield enough to greatly help out an inexperienced Ohio State secondary.
Can't wait to watch it play out - spot on about our D-Line
Don't you get the impression that we will crush O-Lines by seasons end.
This game worries me to be honest. Yes, Mayfield lost two RBs and his best receiver, but Oklahoma recruits decently and they still have some weapons that can hurt us. Mayfield is coming off of one of the most efficient seasons a QB has had, and the Sooners will be hungry for some payback after we dumped them in their house last year.
They drove the ball on us pretty well at times, and our inexperienced secondary concerns the hell out of me coming up against an experienced, very good QB that early in the season. Hopefully our loaded front 7 can generate enough pressure on Mayfield to mitigate the passing attack somewhat, but this might turn into a track meet.
Offensive Gameplan: Spread Oklahoma out with an early, aggressive passing attack, and then hit em with the good old Smash N' Dash (Weber/McCall rotation, with Dobbins rotating in to spell them). Make sure protection holds up and let JT sling it. We may need to pass to run, given that I imagine every single defense we play is going to load the box on JT until he can prove he can consistently burn defenses for doing so (see, last 3 games of 2016). Spread the ball around and don't force feed anyone, let "touches" happen organically and within the rhythm of the offense.
Defensive Gameplan: Force Oklahoma into 3rd and long. Send our line after Mayfield, but mind our rush lanes. Mayfield, despite that video, is a mobile guy who can and will hurt you with his feet if he needs to. Play tight coverage and stuff the run early and often with different stunts and pressure packages. Bend, but don't break, as a couple of long TDs could change the complexion of this game quickly. Make them earn everything, and we'll wear them out with our superior physicality and deep DL rotation.
I think this is our ideal game plan for this year!
You win with people
Like they did in Norman last year, Buckeyes will have to set the tone early on both sides of the ball.
Agree with Leviathan's comment above - have to have the pass on offense, and contain/QB pressure (multiple sacks would be excellent) on defense.
Also calling for a big play via special teams - how about a long overdue kickoff return?
I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...
I'm guessing Campbell will be returning kicks again this year? He almost broke a few last year, and seems to be the best option we have back there.
I ask because it's obvious Campbell is going to have an expanded role in the offense this year, and I imagine the offensive staff may be a little wary of him getting injured.
Campbell looks to be, along with KJ Hill who should lighten the load a bit for him.
A Bob Stoops coached team with the 111th rated pass defense is surprising.
Now just a team with the 111th rated pass defense...
yeah they do not think their going to win here their thinking they can still see the bucks in the playoffs.I need two tickets to this game.baker will try to run and talk but want like the bucks basic defense anyways bucks keep big tight end in check they will be fine.
Bob Stoops retiring
Like the title states, this was a way too early preview. Today's news was shocking.
Guess I just revived this, but I figured it was better than making another topic...
OU's Defense... They aren't going to be much better are they? Seems like OU is ranked a little too high preseason considering they lost a lot of weapons on the O side and.. well its the Big 12, they don't play D.
"Khajiit has wares if you have the coin."
Basically this. Unless our Secondary just SUCKS I think we are fine, because I just have this feeling that we will be a lot better on the O side.
Oh and remember, I'll be at the game with my dad, and we are 6-0 together. *Knocks on wood*.
Oh and remember, I'll be at the game with my dad, and we are 6-0 together.
Something has to give, because Oklahoma is undefeated when playing Ohio State in Columbus. Granted, the Sooners have only played in Ohio Stadium once and it took a last minute field goal to get the win.
I like the Buckeyes to make up the for the loss in 1977 and for your undefeated streak to continue.
**Please don't tell me the first six games you attended were against inferior competition.
I like the Buckeyes to make up the for the loss in 1977 and for your undefeated streak to continue.
I think this game will get away from OU in the 2nd half and the spread (whatever it is) will be met and passed.
I went to the Ohio State #1, Michigan #2 game in the shoe like 10 years ago.. we got this!
B1G network just revisited this game an hour ago. I'd watch it a million times and it still wouldn't be enough. That late hit on Troy was helmet to helmet - Great call by the refs
Fortunately for Doug Datish. Was he playing with a broken wrist? That was rough.
Mayfield will have to play lights out to beat us. Just dont see a young 1st year HC in his 2nd game ever as HC beating Urban. Could it happen? Yes. Will it? Fuck dat.
