Nice work Gene, Matta hasn't been able to coach "reach" any of his players/teams in years, but gets rewarded with another chance to show his mediocrity. It ought to tell you something when the halftime announcer at the Rutgers game said that the Buckeyes on the bench acted with no encouragement or emotion, almost like they didn't care.
EDIT: LOL another B1G announcer that interviewed a Rutgers player after the game asked him "was there a point in the game when you sensed that Ohio State did not want to be here?".
First and goal at the five and Arch is getting the ball.

Can we still fire Thad?
Pay him off and let's get a young, healthy, good recruiting, good developing NEW coaching staff.

The world is yours
First win for Rutgers in the B10 tournament.... if you think this is the low point just wait till next season. Loving gone, probably a transfer and someone else gone. Very realistic that this seasons team has more talent then next season. This doesn't even have a chance of fixing itself until we make the coaching change.
How is losing Loving a negative? 40 mins tonight. 5 pts, 1 Reb.
I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.
Did he show up tonight? nope ( did anyone?).. Was he as ever good as advertised? Nope
But the dude is still a senior wing player to be replaced by??? Think about it.... our SF next year will be???
Bell, Potter, Funderburke and the Wesson Brothers = play inside.
Beverly, jackson, williams and lyle are guards...
That leaves Tate on the wing at SF??? yikes..... as sub-par as Loving has been it's going to be worse next year at SF....
and this is if these dudes don't transfer or decide not to show up ( beverly or wesson)..
And Wesson is a SF.
Again, you are trying to ask for who will replace Loving. Just the simple fact that Loving not being there to turn the ball over during key moments of every game will grossly outweigh the possible talent loss. It will truly be a positive by subtraction!
Don't get me wrong, it will be a shit show with the coaching being the same, but losing Loving is a good thing. Don't doubt that.
I saw a UFO once.......it told me to have a goodyear!
Hope I'm wrong. Just not seeing it. You swap Loving for Wesson tonight and the outcome is worse. Maybe it's different next year but right now it's a talent downgrade. Loving turned it over just as much as everyone else towards the end of the season. Last three games Tate has 14 turnovers... JUST BAD. I just don't see Wesson being 2nd on the team in blocks, 3rd in rebounding, 4th in assists and 2nd in scoring. I'm CLEARLY not saying Loving is good just saying it's going to be a downgrade more often then not when you swap a senior for an unproven player..
I'm not penciling KBD in for anything until we get an update on him. Basketball at every level has plenty of dudes who never came back from stress fracture surgery on their leg. Wish the kid the best but that injury can be brutal on basketball players...
Well my point was KEY turnovers which Loving did in every close game.
Wesson is a true freshman who can at least play solid defense. Not these reaching fouls that still allows layups (loving).
I think you are wrong about missing Loving but right in other aspects. Lesser talents are running circles around the buckeyes. No movement, no hustle, only reactions a second late. I'm hoping loving having stone shoes won't affect the team next year and he e see some good movement, but the style of play also is highly ineffective. We need some more dribble drive and less high picks that only gets someone open 25 feet away from the basket. No action towards the basket.
KBD is not that much better than loving... and when you fast forward to next year at this time...
Someone will be posting. NextPlayer >>>>>>> KBD... KBD is a decent player but he is a little slow.. and cant shoot, and he is not going to take smaller guys off the dribble... he would be a an OK 3rd or 4th option on offense, not your 1 or 2...
At some point we have to realize the players who aren't playing arent magically better than the ones who arent.. hurt or not..
Umm...Keita Bates-Diop. As long as he is healthy, I would take him all day, every day over Marc Loving.
I'd take him hurt over Loving
Keep Calm and Buckeye On
You are going to get your wish...
And as much as I dislike loving... KBD won't be able to produce as much ... which is scary... Then throw Tate in there.. MR Hustle... but He turns the ball over as much as loving... I'm just glad he redeemed himself in PSU game, because he ran same play on possession before and lost the ball...
We have a team of mid level mac players returning next year... as much as I really don't want loving or Lyle back either... just because those guys are lazy and don't play defense doesn't mean the other guys are the answer....
In my view, talent was not this team's issue (although the talent isn't great). It's heart, plain and simply, lack of heart. And no coach can make their players give a shit. Yes, schemes have been bad, and yes the playcalling out of timeouts was terrible for most of the year, but these guys didn't want to play, and it was never more obvious than tonight. Sad.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
s the playcalling out of timeouts was terrible for most of the year
terrible for Thad's tenure... I cringe every time we call a timeout at the end of the half/game..
The asterisk is for those in bounds alley oops to sLam Thompson...those were sweet.
[] - []
They shore nuff were man.
I'm not picking a fight bro, but coaches can make their players give a shit. They can motivate them to give a shit, or at least recruit the kind of players that can be motivated to give a shit. Ohio State is not an elite basketball program, we're bound to have some down years. But the effort we've seen this year has been atrocious. I think Thads effort may even be in question, but I still don't blame him. I blame his boss. I happen to be in a slightly similar situation as Thad, from the standpoint that there's no way I could leave my current job and make more money elsewhere.... So I won't. Plain and simple. If my performance dips below the point of acceptability, my boss will have to identify it, and motivate me to do better, or simply let me go. I'm not leaving on my own accord even if I suddenly begin to suck at my job. I like / need $ just a little too much. My guess is Thad does too. This is where Gene needs to man up.
yeah but then you're back to the point where you were when those four freshman transferred out. You can blame the kids all you want but who brought them here?
No coach can make players care? This is precisely what great coaches do, outside of about 30 players the difference in talent in college basketball isn't all that great, it's about motivation teaching and getting the team to gel. This just isn't happening anymore. Everyone told me that it wasn't that big of a deal when all those kids transferred last year. while I didn't expect this team to win the big ten or make the sweet sixteen. I did think they'd have a decent shot at the tournament. However they finish with a losing record nothing that would provide confidence going forward and a coach who clearly knows he's a wanted man. They didn't care because he didn't get them to.
If we want to Mack brown this thing then by all means let us wasted away whole Cincinnati and Xavier and Dayton all make the tournament while the largest state school in Ohio is sitting at home or trying to lose to get onto spring break. Thad has been a great coach for many years and let's allow him to watch his demise unfold before him while we all forget about the absolute studs he used to get into the program. Should they make the NIT I can tell you how they will break the huddle....Cancun on three!
Because I couldn't go for three...
and practice free throw's.
MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS
No coach can make players care?
Anyone who believes that hasn't seen a Kerry Coombs video.
"We're stretching and you're a kicker!"
Can LeBron be our AD in addition to Cleveland's gm? We need some f*****g playmakers!
We might have more wins by the football team than the basketball team next year with this coach.
Gene Smith needs to swallow his pride and make the right business decision.
Harbaugh puts ketchup on his steak.
but i thought college athletics weren't a business
It doesn't matter whether you're the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.
Just posting and hoping my comment isn’t deleted.
I'd decline a NIT/CBI bid...and I'm not kidding.
I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...
I'm not so sure they even want us.
Everyone was talking that the NIT was a given. I seriously don't think they qualify at 17-11, especially with 2-3 other B1G teams probably in the field. This game has too much material to comment on, but I will only say that Jaquan Lyle and Marc Loving didn't look like they wanted to be there.
I'm at the age where food has taken the place of sex in my life. In fact, I've just had a mirror put over my kitchen table. - Rodney Dangerfield
Did Loving ever want to be there? I put that dude in Amir Williams territory...
That's a fair assumption...very fair.
You actually need to get an NIT invite to decline it!
The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced
I beg this team not accept any postseason invites, if they do get invited. I'm near the breaking point... the sad part is that I'm leaning towards indifference right now.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
The only thing more pathetic than this team is the fact that it's going to be tolerated for another season.

Now that's funny SilverState. Equals the effort the BUCKS showed tonight.
The SEC: The Conference of a Traitor Nation.
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Pretty tight game between two of the highest seeds in the tournament. In the end, the higher seed won, no shame in that.(I'm not used to these numbers next to the team names the bigger number is the best one right?)
Ugh. Embarrassing loss in an embarrassing season. Hopefully no NIT bid - no need for another embarrassing loss.
I'm not saying anything. I've said enough already.
Gene, do something.
He ain't even stretch doe!!
WHISKEY. TANGO. FOXTROT.
There's a couple of old codgers with a cannon in NJ who are celebrating like it's 1899 tonight!
Varys: I've always hated the bells. They ring for horror, a dead king, a city under siege.
Tyrion: A wedding.
In 11w's style, five things:
Allowed 19 offensive rebounds
14-25 from the line
6-20 from three
And, most importantly, a nine point loss to what was the Big Ten's worst team.
"I kind of pulled back, and I think I pulled something." Orlando Pace
6-20 from 3 happens sometimes, the other 4 are absolutely inexcusable.
In pretty sure we're the Big Tens worst team.
Hence the use of the word "was".
Embarrassing and inexcusable.
Buckeye players = clown show.
Coaches don't shoot FT's or fail to block out / rebound.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
I mean...this take doesn't work for like 3 obvious reasons. Come on, man.
These are things OSU has done before successfully vs better competition.
OSU has blocked out / rebounded better and shot FT's better.
Perhaps your disdain for Matta has clouded your perception.
My "disdain" for Thad. Things OSU has done several years ago. Please, continue...
Who teaches the players these things? Who decides to play the players that can't make FT's or don't want to box out. You know who made FTs and boxed out? Daniel Giddens. You know who passed really well and could finish on a fast break? Mickey Mitchell.
Its on the players but do not try and leave the coaches out of this one. Do not even try.
"I've had smarter people around me all my life, but I haven't run into one yet that can outwork me. And if they can't outwork you, then smarts aren't going to do them much good." - Woody Hayes
Giddens making FTs? 43.9% for his career here.
Giddens was like a 45% free throw shooter, lol.
Giddens was like a 45% free throw shooter, lol.
Really!? Welp... you win some, you lose some. But you live to fight another day.
Who motivates players? Did you watch that game. Rutgers won on hustle and effort. NOT talent.
Love for the game? Each other? The fans? Hmm the coach?
The only player that has love for the game and his teammates is Tate. The fans were...lol. And the coach can't stand for more than 30 seconds. If you want to be okay with losing to Rutgers in basketball then fine but I'm sorry, any other coach not named Calipari or Krzyzewski gets canned after the last couple seasons. I've been saying it. D'Angelo Russell bought Matta a few more seasons. I love the hell out of Thad Matta but it's time. You think next season will be better!?
SD, he agrees with you. He's saying he wishes our players had the motivation of Rutgers's tonight.
Oh I was one of the upvotes, I was just continuing on with my vent process. Consider the second part of my last comment a P.S. on my first comment. Didn't mean to come off like an a-hole.
Someone tell me how next year will be different. Ill hang up and wait.
It will be different. It will be worse.... and sadly I'm not joking.. :(
My only hope is that no Marc Loving and hopefully no Jaquan Lyle (either to play overseas or transfer) changes the entire dynamic of this team.
Let's be honest, when we are talking about lack of effort and heart it is not Tate, Jackson, Wesson, Thompson, etc. It is those two guys. And sometimes it spreads like a cancer.
But that is just my hope. I am not saying I am convinced losing those two will fix this team.
Someone cue the Benny Hill Theme Song. Ugh.
We lost to Nebraska and Rutgers - in BASKETBALL. Let THAT sink in for a while....
On the other hand, i'm still trying hard to care.....
And NerdWestern.. at home..
I have defended Thad in previous posts but nothing can defend that......total lack of effort and no urgency.
Because I couldn't go for three. -- Woody Hayes
I missed the game. I've been a supporter too. I'm somewhat speechless. Not saying fire him but gene has a tough decision to make.
The players walking off the floor with ten seconds to go is totally unacceptable. I'm hoping there is not NIT bid. This team does not deserve it. At least there weren't many fans in the arena to see this debacle.
Yes. This single action says more than anything else. Not just the fact that they walked off, but how they did it. Never seen anything like that. Pathetic
This is what happens when you do not address the issues in your program and let it bleed out for 4 years.
There is no quick fix because the players left and coming are are not difference makers
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
Bad, just bad!!! I can't think of any better descriptors.
Rutgers acted like they won the super bowl. I guess it is the first ever B1G tourney win, but still - y'all beat an inept squad who has basically quit playing. Congrats
They won a game. They're young adults and are happy to move on in the tournament. No need to be a dick and Minamize something they've worked extremely hard for. Congrats to those guys. I sincerely hope they enjoy every minute of it
You clearly didn't watch the reaction on the court...or what spilled into the locker room, but no worries. You said it best, "They won a game." Had you been watching, the reaction was way over the top. Good for them...
Had you been watching, the reaction was way over the top.
At least they gave a shit.
Remember when we were pissed off about losing to something called a Shocker on the 2nd weekend of the NCAA tournament....oh how times have changed
I'm sorry but are the Thad backers still here? I mean really? After that? Remember when it was all the attitudes of the freshman that were bringing this team down? All those talented freshman, probably a few that should've been starting over the great senior leader Loving? Yeah it wasn't the freshman guys, it was the dedication to the current roster and the head coach. If his name wasn't Thad Matta he'd be canned.
This is rock bottom for the basketball team. Beau Bishop said it perfectly on Twitter. Those 5 star program changers aren't coming to a program that loses to Rutgers in front of 1500 people. Thad deserves to retire, not fired. I get that but man, absolutely pathetic effort and Thad isn't getting any younger.
Please don't play in the NIT. Season needs to be done...
Thad isn't getting any younger.
Thad isn't old. He is younger than most of the top basketball coaches in the NCAA. He is 49, Calipari is 58, Coach K is 70, Izzo is 62 and I could go on. This is a ridiculous belief that we hear all the time.
Literally Thad's health is worse than all of those coaches....combined. Sorry I should have been more clear on that. He's not dying, but he sure as hell isnt healthy.
Then step down and quit sucking the life out our of our program. Make literally millions while you have bad assistant coaches, and the players have no muscles and no development, physically or otherwise. Strength conditioning coach and Paulus have to go. My 14 year old has developed more physically in his high school program.
How many players bail out like last season? Nobody wants to be here anymore
There are just no words to explain how the fuck this happened - not just tonight, but the entire season. They went from KenPom #13 preseason to losing to Rutgers. If Thad was dumbfounded after the Nebraska debacle I wonder what he is thinking right now. There is absolutely no excuse for this. You simply cannot lose a game like this you just cannot. Rutgers has no athletes and are a bunch of flatfooted players, why the hell were we not running them off the floor? When a team tries to slow you down, don't let them. At least now we won't have to watch any more of the garbage as there is NO WAY the NIT is going to come calling. And if they do we should decline.
That's just cold. Schadenfruede is only allowed to travel one way around here. Haha
Oh come on people, lighten up. I laughed. +1, Blu.
I agree. I thought it was the perfect gif for the situation... nervously enjoying it. Like, "Ha! My rival did poorly!" But remembering how we beat them year-in and year-out in football.
Michigan fan would trade every basketball win over the next 5 years for just one win in football vs OSU
Nope. But I would trade every basketball win over the next 5 years for 3 wins in football over the next 5 years.
lol remember when our sorry ass team beat you last month? Good times
Yes, yes I remember. I think the team was so embarrassed that they finally got better!
Wait - you are a Michigan fan? Makes no sense why you are here, but since you are.... Yo do realize that your team lost at home to the worst OSU team in 20 years. Although I guess by now you are used to losing to us in both sports, so enjoy your popcorn, your team's season is ending on Thursday or Friday anyway.
Yep. SMH. About like losing to Appy State.
Sorry, we have no frame of reference for what that even remotely feels like. But hey at least you all are the second best team in your state!
Like Michigan has been relevant in anything for decades
no guts, no desire, no intensity, no talent.
did I miss anything?
hard to win games when you can't shoot, and you can't rebound...
again, did I miss anything?
16-2 is SWEET!
I am flat out angry with the state of this program. Just pissed off that the coaches, players, AD don't give a shit
Somebody on here called us assholes yesterday for wanting Matta gone. Guess I'm a really big asshole now.

I would love to insert ex-president E. Godon Gee statement " I hope Thad doesn't fire me"
Why Smith had to say something today is a mystery. It's not like we're in the middle of recruiting season or anything.
The team was boring and it was bad. And while it's almost impossible for a bad team to also underachieve, the 2016-17 Buckeyes managed.
One comment on the game itself: The Bucks missed 13 free throws and lost by 9; when you consider it was only a 4-point lead when the Buckeyes started fouling to try to extend the game, you can make a case that this is yet another game we would have won with average (not even good) FT shooting. A pattern Matta has shown he cares nothing about.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
I didn't watch and won't watch. I really hope things get better next year and I am sure if they don't that it will be Thads last.
Man I hope stuff gets better.
it has to be if things don't get turned around.
could you imagine if this was football?
Marc Loving should return his scholarship money.
It's one thing if you suck and just aren't talented.
But, what's so frustrating about him is -- he has talent -- but it just seems like he doesn't care. No emotions. 5 points and 0 rebounds in 40 minutes as the lone senior in a tournament game?!! WTF. By the way, for All of you pro-marijuana people: Marc Loving is exhibit A as to why marijuana as a recreational drug is a terrible idea. That dude's GOT to be on something. He looks heavily sedated out there. My God, that foul with 0.3 of a second left on the 1st half -- that killed us.
Shooting 48% from the foul line hurts so much...absolute momentum-killer.
And, Thad needs to get guys with high basketball IQs. Loving, Tate, Jackson, Lyle, Thompson -- they just collectively do a lot of dumb shit. Especially Thompson.
Are you accusing Loving of smoking weed before games? Because I hope you have some sort of proof to back such a claim if you are making it.
If it was intended as a joke, it wasn't well-phrased.
No dude, it was more a tongue in cheek joke, but I'm not surprised someone DVd it or got offended.
I'm saying, after watching Loving for 4 years, it's pretty obvious he smokes weed on the regular. Not before the games bro! Lol. I'm just saying the dude is no stranger to the Mary Jane. Look at his body language and general passivity. I'd bet anything he smokes a lot.
Sure helped his game!
been saying there is a systematic "weed" problem in Thad's program for years...
"Vision without execution is just hallucination."
At least Marc loving is gone

I hate to rag on kids, esp. Buckeyes, but...
But....Marc don't care!! He's on SPRING BREAK!!!
The team walked off the court with 18 seconds left. Most embarrassing thing I have seen in years. Everyone of them should be kicked to the curb with their coach.
That pissed me off.
The Ohio State football team scored more points (58) against Rutgers than the basketball team did (57).

o dang! That one will sting for awhile
I dont often hate, but when I do...I hate _ichigan Wolverines. Stay victorious my friends.
JT Barrett at point guard?
I hear Burrows can play QB...
I'M NOT CURSED AS A HOOPS FAN, BUT BLESSED AS A FOOTBALL FAN.
Darn it all.
Holy shit what a stat! But it's clear to everyone, even the BTN guys call it out
So thankful I never have to see the apathetic Marc Loving play for OSU again.
Much lower stakes, but shades of the 1991 Michigan football loss tonight
I'll take credit for that 10th DV. Enjoy, I don't hand them out often.
Feed the trolls
Gene Smith. A cult of one!
Please, no more Buckeye basketball games for this season. Send them home and keep them there. I'm tired of them finding new ways to lose games.
And if Gene isn't ready to make the correct decisions, maybe it is time for Gene to be replaced.
My wife and I were at the final four in 2012 - 5 years later we are losing to Rutgers and Nebraska and playing as an 11 seed in a lousy conference....
Yup - this feels like rock bottom.....
It really does. This is far worse than it was at the end of O'Brien's tenure - without the NCAA stuff - which looking back was really a bunch of silly nonsense. We are rapidly approaching the depths of the Randy Ayers tenure. This season just felt a lot like that 6-22 year where I was just numb to the losses. I gave up on this team in January and am so glad I did. We are a complete and total disaster right now and that is putting it mildly.
You should apologize to dumpster fires, that is not a fair comparison at all.
This one hurts, I thought we could get this one. Matt and cannot play the game for the players, they need to play with heart! Next years team could be very solid though with KBD coming back and funderburk hopefully they can both rebound!
I've been a Matta apologist up until this point. He's been a great coach for the Buckeyes (maybe the best ever) but it's time to move on. Go get Greg Marshall at Wichita St before he takes another job!
Just shut it down!
Obviously Rutgers has to be favored to run the bracket now.
Possibly the worst Ohio State basketball team in school history. Jesus on ice skates! Turrible season!
"So about earlier" -Gene
Who is ready to go 16-16 next year!!!!!!!! SO HYPED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not sure where those 16 wins are coming from. But I dig your optimism.
I'm banking on Thad putting together an absolute cupcake non-conference to pad the win total a little for when they go 5-13 in conference
Don't worry dudes, they'll be better next year after our elite coaching staff has time to develop the skills of our 4-star recruits Potter and Funderburk.
Just like they did with Craft and Loving and Lyle and Thompson and Scott and Amir and Lenzelle and Ross and.....
My guess is Lyle, Thompson and more surprise guy leaves. No fear Braxton Beverly is the answer to all our problems
Who cares at this point if any of these guys come back. What did Lyle do this year other than take on Loving's shit attitude and play. Hell I'd consider wiping the whole team and maybe just keep the freshman and incoming recruits.
This just in...Braxton Beverly says he meant to say that he is going to Ohio Dominican, not Ohio State.
Can't wait to hear the same tired excuses from the same tired players and coaching staff. I don't know why Loving wasn't sent packing two years ago. He is the epitome of everything wrong with this program....
These guys looked like they could care less. Down 2 with a chance to tie with about a minute left. Wide open guy underneath and Jackson 1-arms a pass over his head. Then he smiles about it.
18 seconds left, game is essentially over, and Loving walks off the court. He should go shower in the girls locker room, because he plays like a pussy. Seriously, 40 minutes and 1 rebound (and 1 foul). He's too passive to be playing sports. Absolutely pathetic.
How in the hell do you go 15-28 as a team from the free throw line, in the 34th game of the season?! Unreal. Thad won't be fired though. Dickerson and Paulus are safe too I presume. Something needs to change.
Loving would be the reserve water boy on our womens squad
I'm pretty sure my middle school team that didn't even hold tryouts shot free throws better than this OSU team does.
To me there is no excuse for a supposedly D1 level player to not be shooting at least 70% from the line.
Well........ It's over. Now on to spring practice.
I bleed scarlet...literally
I guess if you build the classic car you have the right to drive it off the cliff so says Gene.
Walking off the court with :15 left was as disgraceful an act as I've seen this year in hoops.
The team quit. If you don't make a head coaching change, then you should be fired, Gene. Unacceptable. This is the lowest point for OSU in a 4 year tailspin.
One more thing: I've been saying the Buckeyes were locks for the NIT, but like an idiot I was assuming either a win over Indiana to end the regular season or at least a win in a "first four" Big Ten tournament game. We didn't get either one, and flat-out quit in the process.
I don't think they will get a NIT bid now, but if they did, they would lose at home to a MAC team or some other mid-major from the Midwest, and there's no way Gene Smith can allow that to happen. It has to end here. A 47-31 rebounding disadvantage against the (former) worst team in the conference tells me the players just want to go home.
Lol those guys are closing down the bars tonight
Season was pretty much summed up when Jackson fired a pass over the head of a wide open Tate just as they were getting some momentum back. Pathetic.
It all starts with Thad. And for the last four years he has failed
A fitting ending to the season and a microcosm of the season as well. Loving even saved his worst , most indifferent , for last. I really cannot see how things get significantly better next season. Loving's departure is a plus and l predict Lyle will leave as well. Those are additions by subtraction but there are just no difference makers coming. We can hope some returnees improve , but recent history shows us that is unlikely. I am one of those rare Buckeye fans who follows basketball as closely ( or more ) than football ,and this has been a difficult team to root for.
Haha the addition by subtraction card for like what the fourth year in a row? Pretty much sums up this program
Yeah,That has this team rught where he wants them...in the basement.
Thad Supporters *Crickets*
I'm still around...and I have said, I think Thad can turn it around if he makes some changes, etc. However, I also would have understood if they would have decided to go another direction.
I love how people who haven't commented, watched, been here at all suddenly are the authority figure on all things Thad...not necessarily you Ben, but others.
He's made changes, they haven't worked. Actually things have gotten worse. Supposedly the Amir, Scott, Thompson class was just a fluke disappointment. People said (and I agreed) that Thad deserved another recruiting class. Well guess what? In his next big class, nearly everyone ended up transferring! But the defenders said those were the "bad eggs" and once we got rid of them we'd be better. Are we better? Thad has shaken up his coaching staff, he brought Jent back. None of it helped, we are getting worse. Its time the buck stops with That and we stop living in the past.
And Thad supporters never answer this question: what does turning it around mean? If Thad settles Ohio State as a middle of the pack B1G team and a 8-9 seed with virtually no chance of getting past the first weekend of the tournament, is that turning it around? That is Thad's ceiling at this point, he'll never get back to the level of final fours and competing for championships. That is the past, he had a great run. You know at one point, Blockbuster was making billions right? Things change, Thad can't get it done anymore.
I'm sorry, I failed future telling in my masters program to know exactly what will happen next year or in the future, but evidently you didn't to know there is no chance for Thad to do anything but worse.
You missed me saying I would have understood them going in a different direction because of what has happened recently. However, they didn't and instead of rooting against the basketball team and against Thad, because rooting against the Buckeyes for any reason is dumb, I choose to root and hope that it gets better next year, and the following year, etc.
If it doesn't, I am sure something will change, but if it gets better, I will keep rooting for the Basketbucks...why, because win or lose, I still love my Buckeyes!
Thad should put his paper's for resignation because he'll never get OSU back where it should be.. He's now officially the "John Cooper" of basketball, funny thing is although it worked out in getting Tressel OSU held on to Cooper to long just like with Matta....
Cooper always recruited talent. Thad has fallen off cliff.
The more you act like a lady the more likely he’ll act like a gentleman.
maybe they can win a game or two in the C B I . . .
Why the hell did Funderburke not play? Guy cannot be any worse than Potter...or Loving...or Bell...or anyone else on this team
We're saving him ...
For that run for .500 next season
I wondered that all year long. I mean when you get red shirted at a program who finishes 11th in the big10 and loses to Rutgers in the first round of the tournament........you have to wonder how bad is the kid?
Stopped watching the basketball team about 4 or 5 years ago... just don't need the added aggravation. In my opinion, Thad had to go back then and sadly, he hasn't done a thing to move my opinion
Rutgers may be the best 14th place team in basketball. No shame in losing to them. Go Blackeyes!
Go troll somewhere else, Michigan man.
Anyone notice that an announcer on BTN asked a Rutgers player....... at any point did you feel Ohio State didn't want to be here ?.. The Rutgers player thought for a minute searching for the politically correct thing to say then gave a half assed answer about how he thought they played hard. Later in the post-game a different announcer stated the difference in the game was that Rutgers wanted to be there while TOSU didn't. Terrible free throw shooting next to no offense from the bench no field goals in roughly the last 6 minutes your lone senior has 5 points and 1 rebound that fell into his hands accidently. Nice job. Please don't go to ANY post season tourney PLEASE !!!
Nice. Now Thad can get get back to Columbus a little earlier and cash that paycheck sooner!
If Thad is retained he needs to recruit better players obviously, but, it's not just that...he more importantly needs SMARTER players. I'm a Trevor Thompson fan. He's a beast on the boards, he's much improved, and he looks like he at least cares, (can't say the same about the rest of the team, sans Tate)....but, wow, he stiiiiiillll is making the cheap, dumb, reach-in fouls after we miss a shot. I mean, he's making these freshman mistakes, and he's like 4 years removed from high school. I know Thad has told him a million times, so it's got to be frustrating for Thad...but c'mon man. Is he EVER going to learn?
You need to be humble or you will get humbled. - Jocko Willink
My favorite part was when the TV broadcaster said, " Loving made a spectator play "
You guys might laugh but Rutgers is really playing much better these days. Four days ago they knocked Illinois out of the NCAA tournament. A lot of close losses in the second half of the season. Pikiell seems to be a good coach.
Can we borrow him?
Saban on a cart eating cold pizza
Illinois was never going to make the tournament, they have been in the bottom half of the B1G for 5 or 6 years in a row now, that program is not a measuring stick for anyone to follow. No matter how you try to sugar coat it, this was a bad loss, a horrible loss, and the most embarrassing loss for OSU in at least 2 decades. Totally inexcusable.
Listen, I'll give it to them. They are scrappy. They play with emotion and heart. But I wouldn't go as far as saying they are playing well. These numbers are awful. It's just Ohio State was just as awful with zero heart.
Rutgers is shooting 37% from field. 30% from 3 (7-23) and 60% from free throw line.
That's why I said better not well. Eddie Jordan Rutgers was an unfathomable black hole.
I was mentally drafting an angry reply about making excuses before I saw you're a Rutgers fan. Best of luck in your next game, I think it would be hilarious and awesome if Rutgers managed to win this tournament.
I called for Rutgers to win this game earlier today and to send the Buckeyes packing. I was right.....I look at the AD because he oversees the program. I won't say much except I will borrow Silverstate's meme as an expression....
Just when I think they've hit rock bottom, they find more dynamite.
"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any other one thing." - Abraham Lincoln
Does it say something about the program, the coaches, and player development that each and every year it seems we are happy that an underperforming, lackadaisical, lazy player is leaving?
Hello, my name is Rico and I like to party.
It really doesn't help out the basketball program when you have people saying "X amount of days until football season"
If i could change my username, i would

And this just sums up Marc Loving's career at OSU
#Buckeyes senior Marc Loving, on if this ends up being his final game: "No regrets."
— Adam Jardy (@AdamJardy) March 9, 2017
Good grief. I don't think even Amir said anything like that.
He meant No Rutgrets!
Yes , I am laughing RU B1G.
WE JUST LOST TO RUTGERS !!
And Lyle is coming back...Never would have thought that guy would be here 3 years or more
JaQuan Lyle says he will be back next year ... Trevor Thompson was a bit emotional, said he hadn't thought about it
— Steve Helwagen (@SteveHelwagen) March 9, 2017
Means very little. Daniel Giddens laughed at the question of him potentially leaving after our loss to Florida in the NIT. He bolted a couple weeks later.
Ya think? Where are these 2 gonna go? European leagues wouldn't even take them.
Has got to be 2 of the most embarrassing season ending losses for b-ball & fball this yr!!!!!!!! 20 & 10 every year but w/o much in the tourney!!Waaaaaaaaay too much talent for this to be happening.Loving is finally gone, a good thing in my opinion,1 get Thad has bought himself another season but SHHHHHH GOTS TA CHANGE #noheartnopassion
That seems like decades ago...
So... Thad gets a stay of execution and his players celebrate like they're at a wake. It's almost like they were disappointed to hear that the coaching staff would be returning next year.
The basketball leg of the "The" body has gone gangrene. Time to amputate and grow another one. #science
Behold the chunky whoop ass.
I wonder what Keith Dambrot could have accomplished this year with the talent and resources available in Columbus?
Bucks Fan since 1970
Sports is very much a confidence thing, I think all of us know that. You miss a few shots, lose a few games, and you play tight / scared. I think this team could have benefited from a sports psychologist, they had the potential IMHO to win more games than they did this season. I'm not going to sit here on my butt and unload on a bunch of 18 - 23 year old kids as a team or as individuals. I think coach Matta needs to reinvent himself and use all of the resources available to him to try to innovate a bit more. I'm not sure what that means exactly, different training, different drills, working on the mind as well as the physical aspects, hell have them do yoga, meditating, I dunno, shooting baskets on skateboards ... let's go down fighting with some new approaches.
The will to win is not as important as the will to prepare to win. -- Woody Hayes
I think you make a great point...hopefully something can be done to turn around the program. I have been saying all year, confidence is key, and we need to get some.
Hopefully something changes next year...staff shake up might be nice.
If they played every game like they did against UCLA they'd probably be closer to 30 wins than to 15 right now. It's baffling.
2011-12: Lousy second half against Kansas away from national championship game
2012-13: Lousy first half against Wichita from Final Four
2013-14: Start 15-0, lose 10 out of next 20 and lose to Dayton
2014-15: Have Russell, still barely make the tournament and get throttled by Arizona
2015-16: Get absolutely destroyed in every road game against even slightly good teams, lose to UTA and Louisiana Tech at home
2016-17: Lose to FAU and Northwestern at home, go 7-12 in the one of the worst editions of the B1G I've ever seen
I'm noticing a trend here
So you included two teams that made the final four and elite eight as evidence of a trend of a decline in the program? That makes absolutely no sense. Those OSU teams were great teams who played hard fought games and lost deep in the tournament against other great teams. Even the team with Russell won an NCAA tournament game and did not really get throttled by Arizona. The last 2 years you are absolutely right.
76-58 is a throttling.....
The decline started with the Class of Shannon Scott, Amir, Sam and McDonald. That class never was very good and never improved. ey did not instill a work ethic and showed no leadership. Guys behind them are now just the same as them.
That class did not keep the status quo or advance the program...they took it backwards. Russell allowed us to make the tourney. But to miss on that entire class plus to lose an entire class from last year shows me that Matta 1. is not recruiting very well and 2. just does not develop a player unless they come in highly ranked and uber talented.
Soooooo, when does Basketball season actually start?
Hello is this Division 3 schools my name is Gene Smith were looking for games next December .
"THESE PRETZELS ARE MAKING ME THIRSTY!!!!!!!!!"
" PICKED THE WRONG WEEK TO STOP SNIFFING GLUE"
i thought Florida A&M was the low point of the season. Thank goodness this misery is over. Please ignore the NIT and show humility.
They didn't play Florida A&M
FAU - Florida Atlantic University
Post season fate? There should be no more basketball games for this team. End it now, please.
Thad might not be dying but the program is dead!
Feels like Thad has developed the attitude that this is everyone's fault but his.
Atrocious foul shooting, amongst other things.
In the poll era (since 1936), OSU is by far the class of the B1G:
National Titles: OSU 8, UM 3
B1G Titles: OSU 33, UM 27
Head-to-head: OSU 42, UM 36
Major Bowls (New Year's Six): OSU 20-14, UM 10-16
If this was Loving's last game, what a way to go out. The idiotic foul at the end of the first half, the "spectator" play...and a lot of those offensive rebounds were his man. Addition by subtraction? I sure hope so. I think Lyle has been hurt so maybe he gets a pass. To me the key to the whole season is that Kam lost his shot. If he fills it up like last year they win a lot of these close games. Which is weird because isn't Jent a shooting guru? Also, Paulus coached offense last year and it was bad. Jent comes in, offense improves. Paulus switches to defensive coach and the defense declines. The worst of Thad's tenure. Let's see if Thad has the gumption to do what Meyer did after the Clemson debacle. Paulus should not return as assistant coach.
Luke Kennard probably could have helped tonight, or VJ King, or Spellman, or freshman kid at MSU from Ohio whose slipping my mind, or...
Nick Ward from Gahanna......
King, Kennard, Ward, Hayes, Bragg, Cumberland, Esa Ahmad, Vince Edwards
All of these kids are Ohio kids that wanted nothing to do with OSU or vice versa. They all are major contributors for their teams. OSU ignored Vince Edwards but took David Bell in that class. Edwards is vital to what purdue does.
Amir Williams, Loving, - in common.... same head coach. Tonight many complained about effort and weak attitudes. Any complaint about anything should be sent to management. Look to who is said to be managing the mess. Thad the under achiever. Severance and thanks but the top 5 candidate's must be scheduled for an interview. Gene, it is money on line 2. They say you've been over ruled.
When at the end of the season, with an experienced team, a coach says "We need to get them to want to compete" you have a major issue my friends. Will they want to compete by the end of next season or is that something that takes longer than 4 years to happen?
The issue at OSU basketball is culture. Culture is the responsibility of the coach.
Couldn't even watch the whole thing..was like a car crash on 75...just wanted a glimpse to confirm the worst.
If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.
Jim Tressel went 8-5...in 2004. Mediocre. Should have fired him then. Urban Meyer went 8-5 too. UF should have fired him back in 2009. Especially with those games he played about retire, then un-retire.
I feel like our entire roster is made up of Amir Williams'. Lackadaisical, no fucks given, lazy, boring players. No emotion or love the game. Fuck this season.
Earle for MOD in 16', it'll be the last best thing to ever happen to him.
Matta gets another participation trophy of $ 4 million for showing up next year. When are the fans going to start to not show up ? Oops...they have already have.
