tough schedule ahead, yes they should be.

I hate Minnesota's raised floor with the injury trap moat.
I guess my question is what are the (realistic) goals for this team?
I'm not a passionate hoops fan as others, but do feel Ohio State should be a perennial conference contender at the least.
Hindsight is, and in, 2020
Basketball is my first love, so naturally I follow the BasketBucks pretty intently. But your expectation of conference title contenders, I think, is pretty fair from what we came to expect from about 2006-2012.

I remain hopeful.
you best be waiting a looong time Hov.

Expectations can cause much anguish in life. This is still a pretty young team that's still trying to find its way. While they are staying in games against good teams—but losing, they are improving in little things. Turnovers are a bit lower, but at times they are still sloppy with the ball. Free throws have improved, their season-long average going from 67.1% to 68.7% in the past 33 days, and that's big, considering how bad they were at FT's in November.
They still need to block out & rebound better. If they had cut Purdue's offensive rebounds down by just 2-3, they probably win this game. But bear in mind that they are without a true point guard, and Lyle is doing his best to grow into that role. Furthermore, their guards' shooting has not been consistent, but they are getting a lot of good looks—and a lot of shots going in and out. Things have just been breaking bad for them, including KBD's season-ending injury. Tough times don't last but tough people do.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
Tough times don't last, because tough ADs do.
Let's all grow up and face the music here.. Gene Smith pulls the trigger on Thad if this team doesn't sniff the tournament this season.
at the very least Gene Smith watches Coach Meyer run his program, and then looks over at Coach Matta and ponders things
“Save yourself and relax during every game. I recommend a fine bourbon.”
This is NOT a young team, it's full of sophomores and juniors - with a senior, which in today's CBB is a veteran team. Last year they could use the "inexperienced" excuse, but not this year. I fully expected a B1G title challenge from a team returning the nucleus of a team that finished 1 game out of 2nd place. It has all crashed and burned to the floor and lower.
This is NOT a young team, it's full of sophomores and juniors - with a senior, which in today's CBB is a veteran team.
Disagree. It's not a senior-laden team. And with KBD out, 2 juniors and 1 senior start—along with a sophomore and a true freshman.
Moreover, they too often play like underclassmen, which is why turnovers have been high, and rebounds and free-throws have been down. On offense, they frequently stand around, like freshmen unaware of what to do.
Realistic: a possible NIT bid. They could easily start 0-6:in league play and be lucky to finish 6-10.
I don't see Thad surviving a year like that.
I see a 7-11...........
Saban on a cart eating cold pizza
I wouldn't even call your guess is all that realistic with the loss of Diop for the season. If they drop the game against Minnesota its going to get very, very ugly.... @ Minn, @ Wisconsin, MSU,@Neb, NW, Minn, @Iowa I dont see many if ANY wins there.
Sadly, if that happens, I think Matta is done at OSU....
You WIN with people.
I was so excited 10 (or so) years ago when OSU hired Matta. That said, it may be time for a change in leadership...
15-1 is SWEET!
the explosiveness now over in The Shoe has made a compare and contrast situation that the BasketBucks have had to deal with, and they are struggling to measure up
I'm glad this game is hitting home for the guys. Can only hope they come out more motivated than ever.
Just excuses after every game. This is tiresome because the problems are the same and are not being corrected. When will everyone just admit that things just aren't working anymore for Thad and the Basketball Bucks? I guess this team has to hit rock bottom like the football team did for changes to happen....Hopefully the team can turn it around, but I just don't see it.
I'm sure you will get some flack for this comment, but it's fair. Thad had his top 6 scorers back, and has a JC transfer and freshman that get significant minutes.
Thanks for the support. Been a longtime lurker, but I'm new to posting here so I'm not too sure of what will get me down voted. I guess people can disagree if they want. I'm not trying to start an argument, but hopefully comments like this will get people thinking about the current state of the program. This team is becoming like the Indiana or Purdue football programs. People are bringing their expectations down to meet the current state instead of demanding that the current state be brought up to Ohio State sports standards. It's an aggravating time to be a Buckeye basketball fan.
I am a staunch Thad supporter and will wait to cast judgment until the season is over because anything can happen, but you are right with top 6 scorers and a JUCO who hit 100 3's...I thought we would be solid on a down B1G year...however, I am not sure if the B1G is down or if the bottom half is just better.
If the Basketbucks struggle this year, I think Matta's job may be in question. However, I fear that we may not get what we want in a replacement either....so I don't know.
I like Thad and wish it was working, I just think he is done and I think it shows. His accomplishments can't be denied and I don't want his legacy tarnished. Unfortunately, I think both he and the team need a break. I understand what you are saying about not knowing what a new coach will bring, but the university is going to cross that bridge soon one way or the other. They may as well start now and see what happens.
"“When you feel like you’ve worked as hard as you possibly can and left it out on the floor, guys are going to be emotional because it’s just a love for the game and you want to win,”"
Now that's where leadership can begin. Loving is learning.....
Don't pretend to know the fix but we've moved past wins and losses. The product is just stale.. That was the B10 home opener and there were thousands of empty seats. The team was 10-4 before tonight. We could have been 1-0 in the B10 and it would still be empty in there. There's just no interest in the program, the coach or the team. I'm not sure how a new coach even fixes that? rough times.
It's just a program that has lost all momentum and trending downward, quickly.
Honestly, look at our roster. This is again, a below average team talent wise. Nothing to get excited about, especially when your head coach is not known for player development. "Stale" is a fair representation of this current program; however, I would use the word "expired". Like milk gone bad.
I think the writing is on the wall now, and it's time to see the obvious end game here..
fresh approach should be on the menu
Same team as last year, got all the top guys back, but it's still a team lacking elite talent, leadership, identity, and confidence. It struggles in crunch time with no go-to guy, inconsistent pg play, and a lack of offensive identity/system.
0-2 is not good (obviously), and Is concerning regarding the team's chances for an NCAA bid. The Big 10 may not be great at the top, but it is deep with solid teams as good as or better than OSU. With our schedule and the way this team is playing, we could start 1-5 or 0-6 in the conference, and finish 8th-11th by year's end. It does not look good, although this team was never going to be as good as many thought/hoped.
The B1G is bad, not SEC bad, but bad. There isn't a single team worthy of the top 20 right now, and I would say it probably ranks 5th among the conferences- ACC, Big East, B12, PAC, B1G, SEC. OSU is solidly in the lower middle tier, which is absolutely inexcusable. The league might not even get 6 tourney bids this year and OSU is pretty much already out of the running for that. In January. Unbelievable.
"This can't be happening!"
"Oh, it's happening sweetheart."
I hope the team can have a good season, but i would not bet a dollar they will. I see a losing record when the season is done.
We're a football school first and we can't get the five stars to believe in the program when it comes to recruiting. It's hard to recruit the elite that want to win national titles when our best player returning is Marc Loving. As far as the season goes I think we have shown great heart just came up short. We will finish with a weak record but honestly I didn't expect much. Our leaders and our best players are bench role players on the elite teams at best. Go bucks but no sleep lost.
Because I couldn't go for three
Once again, Thad had to get red-faced and the 4letter announcers had to discuss the lack of emotion and hustle. It's been that way for 2 years. Is it Thad or the players? I am leaning towards the players but patience is wearing thin.
If this is what Thad wants to give the fans I'd rather they do it at St John and tear down the Schott.. It has one of the worst designs for a basketball game I ever saw. I guess it's difficult to keep the richer folks happy in a noisy building... At least, in St. John, the fans could do their part and pick up the team, inject some enthusiasm in our team and intimidate the foes. Never had much fun at the Schott.
I second your sentiments about St. John. I went to almost every home game in the late 80's when Gary Williams was the coach and it could get loud. I prefer it as a venue to The Schott which is pretty sterile. They weren't the best teams but the product and style of ball was fairly exciting.
ahh, St Johns memories
What does "be concerned" mean? Public panic for the edification of 11W writers? Knawing private doubts in the back of everyones' minds-players and coaches alike?
Realistically we could miss the NIT this year. The team was gut wrenched after last nights loss. Tears everywhere postgame. Good to see some emotions, but it felt like the kids knew their season ended last night.
when it was their time to deliver on a perceived hope and promise, they just couldn't muster the results
Potter, Wesson, Jackson, Funderburk, Lyle, Giddens, Grandstaff, Harris, Mitchell, Russell, Bates-Diop, Tate, Bell, Loving, Williams, Della-Valle, Scott, Williams, McDonald, Ross, Thompson..
The jury is still out on Potter, Wesson, Jackson, and Funderburk but which of those guys besides Russell are/were All-B1G type of players? Even with the freshman, only Potter really contributes and he will have to get much, much better to be an All-B1G player. My question is who is in charge of recruiting? I know identifying talent isn't an easy job but good lord...
This team is so frustrating. It's like they can lose by 2 to the best teams in the country, but can also lose by 2 to the worst teams in the country. There is no way in hell this team makes the NIT and already this season seems lost.
With that said, I will be in MN to see the guys up close and cheer them on.
I bleed scarlet...literally
They should absolutely be concerned. There is really no excuse for not starting out 2-0, we were gifted 2 softballs and dropped them both. Not surprising given the fact that they dropped 2 OOC games that they should have won. I think they can win at Minnesota, I don't believe the Gophers are any good, but they will lose a 56-53 type game at Wisky and the MSU game could be ugly. I see 1-4 staring them in the face, when they really should have been no worse than 3-2 at that point.
I have zero hope for this season. The team hasn't jelled like I expected, and now KBD is done. They are certainly not going to make the tournament, and at this point, even an NIT bid isn't a given. How far things have fallen. And this year is most shocking since they brought back the nucleus of a team that was making progress at the end of last season.
and the sad thing is, the players may know it
The Bucks have no one to blame but themselves. Until this group learns how to paly as a TEAM results like this will continue. I don't understand how a group with this many returning players can not pull it together. This group has no concept of TEAM before ME or I. SELFISHNESS once again reared its ugly head and the Bucks were the recipient of a loss to an opponent they should have defeated. I watched this game just like the last game and can not believe this group refused to learn from their previous mistakes. The Purdue game started off as normal but it took a turn for the worst when one of the Bucks( Williams I believe) went off and scored eight points in less than two minutes. Right then and there I knew there was going to be a problem. Instead of riding the hot hand and feeding off the one player in the group who's on fire I witness bad shot after bad shot by everyone but the player who scored the opening points. No worries I assumed the coaches would address this at the first time out and get things back on track. WRONG. The momentum was squandered. A back and forth contest continued on with OSU falling behind in the first half. Keep in mind Tate continues to try to prove to the world he is a consistence three point shooter at the worst time of game at the expense of the team. Really. Thompson is the teams' Double-Double machine but he too continues to attempt ill advised fifteen footers when he is better served attempting shots in the paint. Don't get me wrong with the margin of error so narrow for the Buck are these actions need at this point time? NO. Finally with less than forty seconds left in the game Mr. Loving drives to the basket only to be met and clobbered by two Purdue players. Mr. Loving loses the ball as he only had one intention and one intention only, to get off a shot! He never looked to draw the defense and pass to an open Buck for a shot, You know a drive and kick. Which by the way this group rarely does. Luckily the ball lands in the hands of Thompson. Thompson now in his wheelhouse without hesitating drops the ball in the basket and is fouled. After all the boneheaded plays, turnovers, SELFISHNESS, ill advised forced shots, and BAD Officiating this fateful basket ties the game. The Basketball GODS do not like SELFISHNESS and the ensuing Free Throw is missed. We all know what happens next so I will spare you the details. The crazy thing is this group is looking all teary eye at the end of the game after the loss when all it would have taken was to just play as a TEAM. TEAM a word neither the coaches or the players have a concept of this year. I guess we now know why the four guys transferred from last year. They apparently wanted to be part of a TEAM. One more thing. I have a hard time believing the last play was for Lyle to pull up from 30 feet again. Did we not just go this route in the Virginia game? There was more than enough time for a full drive to the basket for a score or a foul. SELFISHNESS.
This Is A Journey!
I can't read this if you don't at least give me paragraphs.
New Day for OSU. Same noon for TTUN.
You need an editor for your posts.
A couple quick pointers: paragraphs are good. Using all CAPS is BAD.
I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.
The tell tale sign is the empty seats. I am sure Gene Smith is witnessing this. Thousands upon thousands of seats empty. If they lose the next three it could get really ugly attendance wise the rest of the season.
