Fire the Refs!
Purdont's rebounding on the offensive end was the difference. Just don't know what to say anymore.
Man….. this football team.-Jeff Okudah
Love the way they came back, wish we could have closed the deal. Wish the refs called shot clock violation too.
Not as up on basketball rules but is that not a reviewable situation?
Just posting and hoping my comment isn’t deleted.
Shot clock violations are reviewable. I don't know why they didn't look at it. Marta was begging them to.
Wow that stinks. Thank you for clarifying
According to twitter, Thad said that the ref told him that the shot clock violation is not reviewable unless the shot goes in (the put back was good but since the first shot did not go in, it's not reviewable)

That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard...
New Day for OSU. Same noon for TTUN.
I'm starting to think we're not that good.
"Medicine is not a science" - Leo Spaceman
I have a feeling we're watching Matta's last season here.
Hope you're right.
Lyle was way too casual with that last shot. Sucks. The talent is there for this team.
He wasn't even running hard! Five seconds is plenty of time to take it to the basket! WTF?!
My thoughts exactly. Take it to the rim, get fouled, something! They only needed 2, not a hero 3. I have to assume Lyle decided that on his own. There's no way Matta told them to slowly bring the ball up court and chuck up a wild 3.
Wanted to make sure he was the hero.
There was plenty of time to drive and get fouled
First time I have seen actual emotion, hurting, after a loss. That's a good sign I think
Played much better. Gotta close. Felt bad for TT after the game. Stay hungry.
Good effort but this team doesn't know how to finish.
It sucks but it is what it is.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
Maybe I am ignorant, but is that Shot Clock Violation not reviewable? That was honestly the difference in the game. The problem is even if we file a complaint..its still an L for us. I hate the B1G officials this year...
All you need to know.
A number of things would have made a difference.
One that was under their control was rebounding. 14 Purdue offensive boards to our 6.
I agree, we need to work on rebounding...and if it was just cheap foul calls (which there were quite a few) I would say the refs impacted the game...but not potentially cost it. However the SCV actually was a 2 point swing that shouldnt have happened.
One that was under their control was rebounding. 14 Purdue offensive boards to our 6.
14 Offensive boards is inexcusable, unless there is a huge height advantage for opponent. Gotta block out & rebound better.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
We have never been a strong rebounding team under Matta. He needs to take some inspiration from Izzo on getting guys to rebound. It also might help if these guys hit the weight room during the off season.
You are 100% right Coach Matta called the refs out on that call and I do not understand why they didn't take a look how many times have you seen them stop and look to see if a 3 pointer was on the line and make a change, just unreal. I get the team was outrebounded and turned the ball over but they played hard in this one.
Not sure how to feel about this one. On one hand they were down double digits, so they fought back. On the other hand, they had great opportunities to win the game the last 2 minutes and probably should’ve won the game, so pretty effing frustrating because it's the same mistakes time and again. Make your free throws and /or have something better than a desperation attempt when you have 5.3 left on the clock. That’s an eternity in hoops. Buckeyes gonna fight for the big dance the hard way it seems.
Oh, and Spike Albrecht is still annoying - even in a Purdue jersey...
OSU didn't execute and lost to horrible officiating. BOTH things can be true
Make your free throws
Missing a crucial FT at the end hurts, but I'll take 85% FT shooting any time.
+1 I agree on the stats iBuck, but most B1G games come down to the last 5 minutes in each half - no matter how wild the swings are in any particular category. When it's 'Winning Time', everything counts more.
Tyler Durbin missed 1 FG all season the first 11 games. Finished 1 for 5, and now everyone knows his name. Not fair, but true. Make your free throws during winning time.
I feel bad for Trevor Thompson. He was in tears after the game. Glad to see someone who really cares about the team.
"Because I couldn't go for three." -Woody Hayes
You do have to feel for him. But he knows he had a chance to put them up with 15 seconds left, then he fouled the game-winner. It'll be a tough one for him, but as they say, "That's life in the NFL"...
Probably feels responsible for that last foul.
Can't leave your feet like that off such a quick head-fake - you're 6'10", just put your hands up. Hell, you can live with a fadeaway from Swanigan at that point in the game. He was living all game with up-and-unders so I'm sure it was in the scouting report or something that the staff and film know all about. He knows it.
Lyle sure does have a way of taking absolutely dreadful, low percentage shots to end games. That was just a terrible end. Just no aggression there, like the Virginia game...

I hope that TT takes this to heart and comes out playing like crazy against Minnesota and we finally get a W.
Start playing with emotion...lets turn the season around and make a run
They played about as good as they could and still lost. 0-6 start to conference play is a legit threat.
and yet the next game I will still tune in, hopelessly hoping they will actually win an important game.
He ain't even stretch doe!!
Bad shot selection and a painful inability to box out...I feel like I'm talking about the 7th grade girls team my brother coaches right now.
Solid effort, free throw shooting is better, defense wasn't all that bad either, just gotta find better shots and finish possessions with a rebound.
BTW Trevor Thompson is a BEAST. I take back anything badly I said about him last season.
Damn it's frustrating to watch this team. At least in the past after a bad end to the football season we had bball to look forward to. I don't see the tourney in our future this year either.
Me reading 11w tweet: "This team will be a tough out... in the NIT."
Papa Tank: "No, they'll be a tough in for the NIT."
Me, I think the energy is there at times and we have the talent that we should be able to even try to make the big dance... but with our schedule and a lack of closing ability, is seems like a very steep uphill climb.
"I kind of pulled back, and I think I pulled something." Orlando Pace
I bitch about the refs as much as anyone, but I don't know if I've ever actually blamed the refs for a loss. I know that OSU made lots of mistakes but the refs literally cost us this one. Never once called a travel on purdues bigs, called ticky tack stuff on us, and then literally gave them the basket that was the difference. Unbelievable.
The refs didn't help but they didn't didn't "literally" lose it for us. We got outrebounded like crazy. Get more second chances and we probably win.
Are we seriously not talking about the shot clock violation being the difference in the game, I will tell you, I think this is the first time in my life I've seen a team lose a game when the clock hit 0:00 and they were (suppose to be) up 1 points.
Tough loss. Felt like they had it but couldn't close. Good to see them play with energy and emotion to rally back when they were down.
It's a bit sad when this is pointed out as a positive when they are playing at home.
With all of their other shortcomings, the Buckeyes have to be the worst fast break team ever. They manage to screw up at least 1 every game.
The basketball team is going to have to start being included in the "around the oval" segments because there is no reason to devote any resources to this.
Mathias would have been a good addition to the Bucks. Yet another in state recruit that got away.
If you continue to think what you always thought, you will continue to get what you always got. #AlumforStaff
Really, someone who averaged 5, 6 and 10 points per game over the last 3 seasons?
Points aren't everything. He is a quality role player with low turnover. I am not on the #FireThad bandwagon but it would be nice to see more of a team game. The last few years have been chaos on offense with no rhythm. It seems that the biggest aspect missing is a point guard that runs the offense instead of looking to score.
Mathias was a 3 star recruit and that year we got DRuss...KBD, Tate and Bell...I think if we would have skipped one of them and taken Mathias, I think people would have freaked. He has progressed into a good player, but hindsight is 20/20
There are legit complaints about losing out on or not going after in state recruits.
But Dakota Matthias? Come on, man. We don't have 30 scholarships to offer every 3 star Ohio kid.
I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.
I seem to have a habit of only remembering to turn on OSU basketball games where there is only a few minutes left and every time I do, we lose. Just this year, you can add Purdue, Illinois, and Virginia (though I actually turned that one on at halftime) to that list.
I'm bummed that we lost, but I am pretty impressed at the progress that Thompson has made since joining the team. He has become the most productive big man we have had in a long time. He hustles and it's obvious that he cares about the games.
Refs are a part of the game. You need to be smart enough to adapt to how they call the game or rise above it. This team has lost games like this several times over the past three years so to blame the refs is a major cop out. It's what happens when you have no leadership and players with very low basketball IQ. Those things don't change over night but if they don't get better, you are looking at years 3 and 4 in a row of not competing for a B1G title and not even sniffing national relevancy. That's unacceptable.
I have been watching OSU basketball since 1998 and I have never seen us lose a game like this. In fact in the last few years of basketball, I have never seen a shot clock violation not be reviewed that close to the end of the game. So yes, we need better leadership and yes we need to overcome poor officiating on foul/not foul calls, but how do you overcome a free 2 points for the other team that you have no control over?
Well, you could try playing good defense which would have not allowed him to be wide open on the block in the first place... Instead the defender was ball watching, completely lost his mark, and the guy gets wide open for a lay up.
And if Thompson makes a free throw and doesn't commit a dumb foul, OSU wins. Those are things that Ohio State could have done- things well within their power- that would have overcome the poor officiating and won them that game.
Rats ... so close ... but no cigar.
I see players in the NBA going through their shot mechanics without the ball prior to taking a foul shot. I think that's a good way to mentally prep before shooting. And as others pointed out, Lyle has the ability to take it coast-to-coast, don't get that casual medium speed advancement low percentage shot sequence at the end.
The will to win is not as important as the will to prepare to win. -- Woody Hayes
Lyle has the ability to take it coast-to-coast, don't get that casual medium speed advancement low percentage shot sequence at the end.
Alas, he's not JJ, Scoonie, ET or D Russ. Just a shooting guard thrust into being a PG.
We're a good basketball team without a go to player like Sully or Deshaun were in the past. With that said, having 4/5 losses be like 3 points or less really sucks. And seeing TT crying at the end really ruined my evening. Hoping for good things for the rest of the season.
Not sure how to feel about Thad...
Please tell me that was not the urgency nor the shot that we wanted at the end of the game from the coaches. They cannot string together enough positive offensive or defensive possensions throughout the game. They need to get better during the game so they don't need to win it or lose it at the end.
OSU had plenty of chances to win. Purdue had 5 or 6 straight possessions with turnovers in the second half and OSU could not capitalize. Interesting to see where they go from here. Road for 2 tough games.
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
The Boilers play good D too. The loss is unfortunate, but Purdue is a good hoops team—ranked #20.
Bucks have to get over the hump: they have shown improvement, but must keep getting better.
85% from the foul line is impressive but the miss by Thompson on the 1 and 1 with 15 seconds left was huge. He played a great game though. OSU has to get tougher on the backboards. Seems they are always being out rebounded on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
Saban on a cart eating cold pizza
TT was a hero for getting the basket to tie. If he doesn't get it, the rest is irrelevant.
That was his only miss from the line (5/6).
He was just at the right place at the time time on that stick back. It was an errant out of control shot by Loving that didn't even hit the rim, but, to your point, it was the tying basket, yes.
didn't see the game, but looking at the stats on CBS, it looks like KBD didn't play. is this true, and if so, why?
15-1 is SWEET!
He did not. Injured. Honestly has not looked close to 100% since returning from ankle injury suffered against Providence.
Out for the rest of the season. Stress fracture. Will have surgery and redshirt.
so I see/hear. Not good.
I didn't watch the game, but based on the stats, rebounding was an issue. FT shooting was on point, though.
Behold the chunky whoop ass.
Sore leg, day to day.
Stress fracture. Done for the year
Man tough tought loss. The game was horribly officiated ( like most college baskefball games) and it came down to a missed shot clock violation, awful.
Whatever happened to you have to have the ball to call timeout? Bullshit that Painter was able to call a timeout and ice Thompson. Mo idea what Lyle was thinking not going to the rim on the final shot. This team just doesn't do the little things well enough to win close games.
KDB done for the year. Surgery coming
Sounds like he will redshirt
Adam Jardy from Dispatch says he will have medical redshirt. Seems like he has played in too many games to me. Hope he is right. I think Keita could be an All Big 10 player if he could stay healthy.
what a nut punch
Injury to Bates-Diop is a stress fracture in his leg, same issue he battled all summer. Tried to play through it & couldn't. Will redshirt.

Video on youtube is the only thing I have found so far.
I'm getting pretty tired of Marc Loving giving effort in half speed. He has good spurts here and there, but not enough.
Perhaps Matta wants Loving to be a steadying influence on a team where some players wonder who is going to make a play (Instead of thinking "I'm going to make a play"). Loving probably plays too many minutes, and Thad should let Wesson play more, so the latter gets more experience and Loving can give more effort when he's in there. But Marc doesn't know how long he'll be in there, so he tries to play at level that conserves his energy to last the whole game. Tonight he was gassed, exhausted before Matta subbed Wesson for him.
I hope the players get together and notice the difference in how they played the two halves. Stop screwing around in the beginning of games and play freaking defense like you did in the 2nd half.
And can we mix it up on offense maybe?
The last 5 minutes of the first half was just horrible. NO one was moving on offense. They were just standing there while some one just jacks up a shot. They don't move. Bball is movement. They stand there. MOVE!
My question: 5.3 seconds left, we rebound the missed free throw and Lyle brings it up the floor like there is 5 minutes left in the game! Why didn't he take off like a shot? 5 seconds is plenty of time to travel the entire floor. He could have tried to draw a foul driving to the hoop or at least gotten off a better shot than a 30 foot contested jumper.
"Why didn't he take off like a shot?".....he can't, he would dripple the ball off his thigh.
At least we have wrestling and volleyball to look forward to.
This team will lose many more tight games like this the rest of the year, they have enough talent to compete but don't have a finisher in crunch time, they have too many lulls on offense. Lyle has taken over games before but he failed to take over down the stretch tonight. Losing Bates-Diop will be a major blow but he has never been a dominant player ( injured or not). Foul trouble by the bigs was an issue again tonight, it was good to see some scoring from the post players. There was an untimely miss at the foul line but overall free throw shooting has been good so far in league play at almost 84%.
TT was so close to being the hero...then he misses the FT and commits the foul at the other end. Damn.
Got to close. Simple as that. They can compete and put themselves in position to win...they just have to finish it off.
Class of 2010.
Multi-million dollar coaches should win games like this one--with or without help from the refs. Same story. Same result. Same unearned salary.
The Bucks have no one to blame but themselves. Until this group learns how to paly as a TEAM results like this will continue. I don't understand how a group with this many returning players can not pull it together. This group has no concept of TEAM before ME or I. SELFISHNESS once again reared its ugly head and the Bucks were the recipient of a loss to an opponent they should have defeated. I watched this game just like the last game and can not believe this group refused to learn from their previous mistakes.
The Purdue game started off as normal but it took a turn for the worst when one of the Bucks( Williams I believe) went off and scored eight points in less than two minutes. Right then and there I knew there was going to be a problem. Instead of riding the hot hand and feeding off the one player in the group who's on fire I witness bad shot after bad shot by everyone but the player who scored the opening points. No worries I assumed the coaches would address this at the first time out and get things back on track. WRONG. The momentum was squandered. A back and forth contest continued on with OSU falling behind in the first half. Keep in mind Tate continues to try to prove to the world he is a consistence three point shooter at the worst time of game at the expense of the team. Really.
Thompson is the teams' Double-Double machine but he too continues to attempt ill advised fifteen footers when he is better served attempting shots in the paint. Don't get me wrong with the margin of error so narrow for the Buck are these actions need at this point time? NO. Finally with less than forty seconds left in the game Mr. Loving drives to the basket only to be met and clobbered by two Purdue players. Mr. Loving loses the ball as he only had one intention and one intention only, to get off a shot! He never looked to draw the defense and pass to an open Buck for a shot, You know a drive and kick. Which by the way this group rarely does. Luckily the ball lands in the hands of Thompson. Thompson now in his wheelhouse without hesitating drops the ball in the basket and is fouled. After all the boneheaded plays, turnovers, SELFISHNESS, ill advised forced shots, and BAD Officiating this fateful basket ties the game.
The Basketball GODS do not like SELFISHNESS and the ensuing Free Throw is missed. We all know what happens next so I will spare you the details. The crazy thing is this group is looking all teary eye at the end of the game after the loss when all it would have taken was to just play as a TEAM. TEAM a word neither the coaches or the players have a concept of this year.
I guess we now know why the four guys transferred from last year. They apparently wanted to be part of a TEAM. One more thing. I have a hard time believing the last play was for Lyle to pull up from 30 feet again. Did we not just go this route in the Virginia game? There was more than enough time for a full drive to the basket for a score or a foul. SELFISHNESS.
This Is A Journey!
OK, now I owe you my attention.
