What an eye opening story about Pat's brother Matt. These pills have a bigger grip on society than I ever imagined. I also have a friend named Matt that has been struggling with this since 2010 and he's been in and out of rehab for awhile. Unfortunately he's been missing since early October. It's been a rough month and a half and the realization that I may never see him again. Addiction sucks and I'm glad that Pat is taking an opportunity to speak about its effect for a personal level.

I'm still not convinced the weather had much impact this past saturday. I was at the game and was perfectly comfortable. Granted, my friend Jack provided me with some warmth, but IMO the conditions certainly did not warrant a game plan that featured only three plays (JT left, JT right, and JT overthrow). Alas, we won, and I am ready to move on to the game we always wait an entire year for. Go Bucks! Beat TTUN!

HS
BeijingBucks's picture

maybe it was my TV resolution but the flags and the referee's pants tell a different story. Not sure JT spends enough time throwing in adverse conditions to adapt. his form was awful (back foot, etc) he rarely seemed to plant and drive the ball resulting in flutterers to wide open guys.

I'm more entertained by the Spit n Korn discussion. Probably both... Spit for half a drive til he is broken in half by John Simon, Korn for a couple series till he is Kobbed then... does Forcier or Shane have any eligibility left?

If we let them run all over us. Shame on us.

Everything I heard after the game was that Speight broke his collabone. If thats the case, no way he plays. Jimmy is just trying to play mind games because thats what he does. Good for him. But he's going to be in for a rude awakening when he finds out he should have spent less time trying to be tricky and more time preparing for the best team he will see all year. Because I got news for him. It doesn't matter which QB he plays this week. They're both mediocre, at best. Neither is good enough to come into the Shoe and win a game for him, the best he can hope for is that they come in and don't lose it for him.

Opiate addiction - my thoughts. Medical community always aware of the addiction. Patients hold us hostage often refusing to leave or threatening to come back to the ER over and over if not given them. Many do have reasons that are legitimate to require. It is hard to see how much pain a person is "really" in - we lack fully objective measurement tools. JCAHO made pain the 5th vital sign and we were told we had to address it and patients have expectation that experiencing any pain equals poor care and will complain to administration if not given ample supply. Patient satisfaction scores drive salaries for many facilities. Drug industry for years have have cranked out more and more of the same and were unwilling to formulate with deterrence (i.e. Naloxone in all tablets) because addiction fueled sales.

Plus 9000 other contributing issues including economic downturn and social acceptance for drugs as a cure all.

HS
Homey1970's picture

Like all issues, a generalization like this is erroneous.  It all depends on the patient AND the prescribing authority.  I developed a physical dependence while taking oxycodone for a year after lower back surgery and associated complications (now have permanent radiculopathy and radicular pain).  I also have 5 budging cervical discs, arthritis throughout my C-, T-, L-, S-spine, SI joints, several other areas and a complex SLAP tear.  My back surgeon cut off my oxy and it took me about 10 days of withdrawal symptoms (feeling like I had the flu) before I came out of it.  That's the reason that I say I had a physical dependence and not an additction.  I didn't seek out means to keep getting high.  I just allowed the physical part to run its course.  Now, as a 100% retired disabled vet, my VA doc is more than willing to prescribe any opioid analgesic that I want.  Since I'm still working, I told her that I don't want to go that route...yet.  I can't be functioning and gainfully employed while high on opioids.  For me it's NSAIDs for the last 15 years (with Nexium), muscle relaxers, antidepressants (for nerve pain) and Tylenol.  Doctors and patients have responsibilities in prescribing and using these dangerous medications.  In some cases, doctors need to have a plan to gradually reduce pain medications and patients need to follow those directions in order to taper off.

HS
Rockfordbuckeye's picture

I believe we lack enough pain specialist physicians to handle addiction. Your average PCP is not comfortable managing addiction medicine but wait lists for specialists can be 6+ months. One more of the 9000 contributing issues!

HS
D.J. Byrnes's picture

I disagree. Doctors are the ones with the knowledge and authority. Yet they're getting held hostage by patients, as if they brought a gun into the room? Don't buy it all.

Chronic pain patients are a problem for doctors, and Oxy made it an easy fix for them. The blood is on their hands way more so than patients.

Los Angeleno by birth; Marionaire by the Grace of President Warren G. Harding.

HS
TShell's picture

They don't need a gun. They have their satisfaction scores. Most reimbursement of doctors and hospitals these days is tied to one form or another of patient satisfaction scores. Not how well they do their job, but how well the patient thinks they were treated (aka did they get the answer/Rx they wanted).

It doesn't apply just to pain medications. It could be an exhausted parent of a toddler with a cold. They just want something to help their kid as fast as possible. Antibiotics won't help, cold medicines aren't helpful in children that young and actually cause more harm than good. The only thing a good doctor can recommend is rest and making sure they stay hydrated. That leads to either angry parents or a weaker doctor writing a useless prescription to essentially treat the parents' anxiety.

Angry patients lead to poor satisfaction scores that lead to cuts in reimbursement, or if they get bad enough contract termination. Administrations are always looking for ways to increase reimbursement or cut losses.

HS
Count Chocula's picture

I should have read your post first! I replied with almost the same answer, although I think you explained it better.

HS
Count Chocula's picture

Talk to literally anyone who works in medicine and I bet you'd be surprised how often they will say patient satisfaction scores are a serious influence on their treatment of patients. This extends to other areas of medicine outside of pain management (Imagine a mom who is convinced that her kid needs an antibiotic even though the kid has a virus. Explain germ theory to her all you want, she's either going to get the script or will be submitting a bad review). In many cases, doctor pay is directly tied to patient satisfaction, but unfortunately a satisfied patient doesn't necessarily correlate to the best or most appropriate care. I'm not saying it's right, but it's tough to take the moral high ground and fight these battles over and over and over again.

HS
wyatt's picture

My wife works in the emergency room of a major hospital. Many "low income" people come in all the time for their pain killer medications. The opioid and pain medication addiction in America is a catastrophe.

HS
Todd-Not Boeckmann's picture

For three years, I drove a cab part time.  One of our regular assignments was picking up discharges from metro hospital in Cleveland paid for by the government for low income patients.  A lot of drivers hated the assignments because we were paid via flat rate voucher instead of cash and were almost never tipped.  One time I picked up an older gentleman, and we weren't even out of the parking lot when he was on his iPhone saying, "O it's <his name>,  I got 10 oxyies. How much?  Five each?  I can get 10 from Omar."   We get their home address on the voucher, so when he asked me to take him to a different address, I refused.  Told him I had to drop him at home.  Man was he pissed.  I was costing him money!

As a healthcare worker, I agree with everything you said. But, this also assumes that all PCPs are good and have the pt's best interests at heart. Team docs do not have their pt's best interests in mind many times as their job is to get players back on the field. And some PCPs are looking to gain "loyal" pts. If only there were such a thing as a perfect world.

Buckeyes were not focused on Sparty last week--they were already thinking about the Game. I believe that the coaching staff was too. That was a flat-footed performance by the entire team on Saturday. I think we're going to see a different looking group this week playing to win, not playing not to lose

HS
rkylet83's picture

I don't think they were already thinking about the next game or anything.  It was a brutal weather game that equalized the talent/leveled the playing field and MSU is built better for it.  Not to mention this was essentially MSU's Super Bowl and it was Senior Day.  I was happy that our guys kept fighting and got the win.

I think we'll play better this week as well and at full operating capacity.  Temps will be in the 40's and wind is supposed to be low.  It also will be helpful to play an offensive style similar to *ichigan so close to The Game.

I couldn't stay sane the whole day without doing a crime to pass the time.

I am going to Marion on business later today.  I have been there many times before.  I understand that thought process then...

In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...

HS
ScarletGray43157's picture

I never thought the local team would lose, but my hackles stood at attention when Michigan State kept its offense on the field. One of these days a team is going to hit that go-ahead hustle.

Thankfully it didn't happen on Saturday because I don't think the offense would've scored on the rebuttal possession.

I agree with all of that.

The correct play is this: For the tie at home and for the win on the road.  MSU did not make the correct play.  If they had made the correct play and converted the 1-point try then the game would have very likely gone to overtime and, well, you just never know...

In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...

HS
TShell's picture

The problem with that theory is that their offense was being stymied for the vast majority of that game, with a few large outliers that got them almost all their points. They were also playing against the best red-zone defense in the nation, which is all that OT would be. Our offense was not able to drive the length of the field most of the game, but put them on the 25 they are going to come away with points more often than not.

HS
ScarletGray43157's picture

Same thing with MSU from the 25, more often than not points scored.  If they had played for the tie then it would have, in high probability, gone to OT.  The smart coaching move would have been to play for the tie at home, and it is conventional wisdom as well. Missing the 2 point conversion is a deflator for the whole team though; having a tie that late would have lit a fire under their defense and their crowd too. I would have played for the tie if it was me.  I see your point though.  It is a W for the good guys no matter how this discussion ends...

In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...

I gotta brag that about thirty seconds before MSU's fake punt I told my wife, "MSU is going to run a fake punt.  Their offense is getting nothing, the crowd is out of the game, and they're out near mid-field."  And I called that Dantonio would go for two.

The problem with all the "what if he'd gotten the two points?" Is that people forget something.  If MSU converts there, OSU has the ball with a decent amount of time on the clock and now needing to call plays to score points instead of to run out the clock.  I think if they convert, JT puts a dagger in their little Sparty hearts and leads us to points in the final minute.

If the coaches decide to use it, Ohio State's rushing attack could be the deciding factor. We all love to know the deep balls, but it'd be equally entertaining to watch Curtis Samuel and Mike Weber bash the Wolverines into submission.

We don't need a bunch of deep routes. When they crash down, the middle is open. Hit the receiver which could be the TE.

Finally, it's here! Gorge yourself on turkey, potatoes, and pu*kin pie on Thursday, and beer, ro-tel, Buckeye touchdowns, and Wolverine Tears on Saturday! There's one in every crowd.

Urban needs a favorite band upgrade. I suggest one with an Ohio State theme in the name:

Kevin Wilson knows.

He's a michigan guy.  His band has been carrying him all these years.

Love me some Declined to Answer. Their earlier stuff was OK, but they really hit their stride in the mid to late 80s. I'm not really sold on their newer stuff, though. Still, it's great to see them touring again after all these years.

Yes but did you hear Declined to Answer's manager declined to answer whether or not the band found a new lead singer. Their first choice declined the offer.

Woody didn't even get his name on the field jacket?

Did anyone catch that Mark Dantonio was referred to as Mike D'Antoni?  Or is that an inside joke that I missed somewhere??  I mean.. I know he's Sparty's coach, but he is also a Buckeye and the mastermind of that awesome 2002 defense that smothered Miami!  We at least gotta get his name right..

Here we go again......  Short answer to your question is yes, it's a loonnggg running 11W inside joke.

Love DJ's writing, and actually can tolerate Marion, but I wouldn't give a wooden nickle for ANYTHING to do with Warren Harding. Have read 4 books on him and other than his advisers being called the Columbus Mafia, I can't find one good thing about him.

He was good but some of his cabinet was bad.

He was?  If so, it wasn't evident in the four books.
