I'm still very optimistic about the season. We're spoiled enough to be 7-1 and in contention for another natty and yet we're wringing hands over not hanging 60 on some decent teams. The urban Meyer effect!

Dusting off the "cover three beaters" articles after @KyleJones article this morning.  We are especially weak at getting the ball into the middle of the field (for the most part) where 1 safety cannot cover two people.

What seems to be missing from our offensive playcalling are concepts like 4-verts or "All Posts."

http://www.itsalloverfatman.com/broncos/entry/the-recipe-7-ways-to-attack-cover-3

Again with attacking the intermediate middle:

Here is a hitch/seam concept against soft coverage. http://winwiththepass.com/cover-3-beaters/

I think we're seeing an overreliance on passes to the flats. Understandable to a degree because that zone is open. But its slowing our offense down and we aren't hitting big (20+) pass plays we could be hitting against cover three with some of these other options. I think the coaches will have this figured out and drilled into the team the next few weeks.

This is why we need Baugh to start being more consistent. He could absolutely torch teams on the TE seam if he would just catch the ball 75-80% of the team.

We can't stop here; this is bat country...

Yes!

Great post.

Most times there seems to be an either/or option of going deep or checking down in the flat.  It's a spread offense---when the D is spread the intermediate middle opens up.  If I recall we went to the intermediate middle once in the NW game.

To me, all you can ask for is to be in a position to make a run going into the final stretch of the regular season.  Put yourself in a position to win the Big Ten.

Most of the fans complaining about anything and everything are the same ones that expected 2-3 losses before the season even started.  But then the games started and people were surprised how well the young team was playing. Expectations changed.very quickly.

Enjoy the ride Buckeye fans, this is supposed to be fun, even if the games get a little stressful.  You live to fight another day.

Exactly.  Blowing out Oklahoma at their place put the hype machine on overdrive.  People forget this is the youngest team in college FB- to expect that result every week out is insanity.

HS

Most are not complaining about the lack of blowouts. Coach Meyer himself set the bar high. What most are disgruntled about is the vanilla play calling and the fact that we haven't seen any improvement by week 8. The last 3 opponents are basically playing the same strategy and we haven't seen our staff adjust to it. Our first drive against Saturday we went with tempo and it worked beautifully then they put it on the shelf back to the same disjointed slow play calling.

Exactly right on....... Coaching, mainly Beck as he is useless in developing QBs, and Warriner, good at OL but not at play calling, game planning.

HS
buckeye-bengal's picture

Beck deserves way less blame. He only get to call the Jet Tempo, Warriner calls everything else. We haven't seen much if any Jet Tempo this year. Warriner needs to coach OL and let play calling go. Go Buckeyes!!!

HS
Knite's picture

Beck is a HORRIBLE QB coach plain and simple. How much he has to do with play calling I don't know, but as for coaching up the QB  witch his job,  he plain sucks at it. There is a reason why Nebraska fans said good luck with him after Meyer hired him. Now everyone knows.

HS
Buck68's picture

well 'let' me say this about that!  Any hyperbole that conflicts with MY hyperbole is... so wrong!   ;-{)}

Agree with your sense that 'most' of us perceive that coaches' play-calling and comparative lack of improvement/adjusting are our two most observable issues.

And i would add our leaders and fanatics alike keep tripping over themselves with emotional conflicted narrating.

Unfortunately, also agree about the obvious with many:  we fans [with notable exceptions] see the tip of the iceberg.  That should be a continual reminder of  the importance of context & perspective.  But...in the crucible... those values mix about as well with fanaticism as ...'here we come' does with 'tactics'.   ;-{)}

And it's not that tough to stir us up by the same ol' stale regurgitations of a choice stupidity or 3.  It's like... we haven't learned a thing during all our just moving on and getting better by progress!  ;-{)}

One factor seems fairly constant during the Meyer Era so far:  Coaches have consistently recruited better and better talent... and part of that has been a repeated assertion about UFMs program preparing new kids for the NFL, starting with the day they arrive.  Those kids are coming... time for the coaches to walk their student talk... as we are all students of the game.

Now... just like each play... what have you done for me lately?   ;-{)}  After all, we 'demand' 'the kids' 'get better each day'.....

HS
buckeye-bengal's picture

My problem is not the close games, but here Barrett is defending the lack of a passing game by saying the DBs are playing 10 yards off and then backing up upon the snap. If this is the case, what happened to the 5-7 yard slant? Start running those and the DBs will come up. Instead we can't hit those either. I don't mind lengthy drives, I actually prefer them, but OSU needs drives to give the defense rest. The defense looked shaky some last week because they were out there way to much. The offense needs to control the ball more. If you can't run, use the short to intermediate passing game. Go Bucks!!!!!!

One of the 11w staff did a story about defeating the cover 3. Problem is they are also dropping their lb's deeper to force the underneath throws. You would think the QB draw would be wide open. Our staff just isn't adjusting fast enough. It is what it is. I still love my buckeyes, bittersweet as it may be. You should have heard buckeye fan's during the woody years, even woody wasn't immune to the #firewoody takes.

MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS

HS
awlinBrutus's picture

The LB's are probably sitting on the slants. Baugh dropped 2 passes over the middle and one at the sideline against nw. I think the best spot to punish the cover 3 is the sideline about 8 yards downfield. NW covered the flats pretty good last week, yet we kept throwing it. We missed a few big plays by shoestring tackles as well. Hopefully our offense puts it all together before we lose again. This year parallels last year in that we keep waiting for the offense to break out

Most especially, we got our hopes up with that shellacking of Oklahoma in their house.

Had that not happened, my expectations were would be tempered. I was at the game and we dominated on both sides of the ball, especially the lines.

In retrospect - the Big 12 CANNOT play defense and our "basic offense" was very predictable against OU (4 TD passes to Brown for example). We just had all the time in the world. Our D-line contained Baker Mayfield. Our "basic defense" didn't need to do much, really.

SEC is down (except Bama). ACC is down (Clemson still looks sluggish). PAC 12 has Washington but everyone else is "meh." Big 12 - lolz.

We the fans and the media that desires to please us and fund themselves create this monster called expectation and then force teenagers to face it every week. The sad part is even when they defeat it the very same fans and media say "Yes, but you almost didn't!"

I am proud of these young men and their coaches and I hope they are at least at times enjoying this!

Now, that's tough to do with so many young guys on offense.

This is a really interesting article.  The quotes especially offer a lot of insight into what's going on, not all of it, but a decent amount.  Speaking for myself, I'm now looking for how well they can play the 'vest' style.  A lot of pressure on JT this season and on the special teams.  JT in particular can prove something big-trophy worthy bc it's not sounding to me that Meyer has in anyway limited his driving since the season began.  JT's got the keys.  Knock each duck down, one at a time, nothing spectacular, just win.  And that approach can set a stage for surprises.  Lucky to have JT, very lucky.

The Bucks are essentially in the CF playoffs right now. Win every game, or the rest of the season is just exhibition. So, yeah. Only concentrate on the next game, win it , or be eliminated. Having experienced the OSU fans here at the 11Ws for the first time, I can tell that the only true success that you will accept is to get in the final four. A loss in the playoffs can be excused, however, because of the youth of the team. As far as JT goes, I am a little biased since I also graduated from dear SH Rider High in WF TX. But as far as I can tell, he has played well enough this year to be undefeated. Special teams barfed up the loss at PSU. Anyway, concentrate on Nebraska and kick their ass. Go Buckeyes.

HS

Special teams ....

Special teams.  And make clever use of offense subbing/rotation.  If opponent defenses now know, it isn't clever enough when there's so many young guys, which will naturally limit your options to begin with.

I'm disappointed because I never thought Urban and Co. would turn into Tressel and Bollman. It's been happening slowly since the national championship. Urban gets more conservative instead of becoming more innovative. This team isn't even fun to watch any more. As someone said in a previous post, it seems like it's more about not losing than about kicking ass. For whatever reason, the swagger was gone after OK, and they're tentative, except for DBs. I don't think this is a good direction to be going in with Harbaugh at Michigan. Even Saban is getting with the program offensively. Heck, the team rarely uses misdirection any more. Are you telling me opponents game plan for misdirection? I know they don't want to admit the passing game sucks, so Urban and JT make up nutty excuses for not being able to throw short, medium OR long. And for not being able to run on top of it. How can that be? Fact is, JT's had several chances to connect on long throws. He just can't do it. In Urban's defense, I believe he knows Warriner and Beck don't make a Herman and one or both will be moving on next year. But he hired them. His staff recruited this crop of really fast receivers who can't seem to get open. I would agree that we need to keep in mind that this team is really young and may have peaked for this season already. I assume Urban is feeding us bs because he wants to preserve this team's fragile egos. But I'd still like to see them playing with a bit more vigor and passion and far fewer excuses. This business-like attitude goes only so far. If I hear another word about all the correctable mistakes they plan to correct after the next mediocre game, I'm gonna scream. There are only so many types of mistakes you can make in football. I think they've made them all by now. I'd be happy to eat my words after Nebraska. But not counting on it.

HS

Wow dude, take a breath. You sound like we are winless on the year. The team is young, and yes there are some warts, but your expectations are way out of whack if you thought the youngest team in America was going to be perfect.

First, I'm glad to see someone quoting Jesse O.

Second, Tressel was a wizard at field position football and getting his players (including D and spc teams) to pull rabbits at out their helmets--you l know what I mean.  If Meyer's staff can get their younger players to execute, they will knock the games down one at a time.  I haven't seen anything in front of them that's so scary good.  Don't ever dis Tressel.

I may just be suffering from the "Other than Ohio State the B1G still sucks syndrome "that has been going on for the past 10-15 years. It's been kind of tough accepting (or believing)the fact that maybe the conference has gotten better in the course of 2(actually less) years. (Even though I'm still not terribly convinced it is any better). I'm pretty sure Oklahoma would destroy Penn State tomorrow if they played at a neutral site. Northwestern is still a team that lost to a FCS school. Wisconsins only signature win is over a decidedly mediocre LSU team in a "neutral" home game and a Who knows? Nebraska team. Nebraskas signature win was Oregon by a small margin. Oregon is terrible this year.
It feels like right when I want to start saying the conference is better... this bowl season every team will lose by 30+ (which could easily happen ).

Sky high expectations. 7-1 and all goals still there as Urban said. Two of our last four games are against ranked teams and both of those two are at home! I still like our chances of winning out! Keep in mind Alabama was down 24-3 to a 3-5 Ole Miss team earlier this season, and has played NO ONE besides Texas A&M. The B1G is REALLY good this season and we don't play Purdue and Illinois. Of the three crossover games for us, two of them are top 12 teams right now! The fact that Nebraska only dropped to #9 (rightfully so) after losing to Wisconsin just shows how much respect there is for the B1G right now, and I absolutely love it. Just because we aren't blowing teams out of the stadium doesn't mean we are bad. Only five years are ranked higher, and we play one of them on November 26th. Enjoy being a Buckeye fan we are rich!

This subject was referenced earlier, but bears re-emphasizing - folks, the Buckeyes schedule is MUCH tougher this year than in recent memory. It would be interesting for our beloved 11W crew to check to see when it was in the past that Ohio State played this many ranked teams in a season. I remember Archie Griffin's playing years and I don't remember a tougher schedule than we have this year.

I love my Buckeyes! Especially the young guns. But I will say again that being young is more than just an age thing. In the two toughest games we played this year we played teams with more mature players AFTER they had a week to get their full body strength back. You can have more talent than the other guy but if their stamina and core strength are more than yours (based on being built up over time)Then you will wear down quicker. I believe that is why we have so much rotation among the younger players. Our young guys are still building core strength and looked worn out during the Wiscy game and also at PSU. Give them one more year with coach Mick. I truly believe that this is a bigger factor that the play calling and personnel usage.

You never get a second chance to make the first impression
