Best of luck to Powell, clearly he had his compelling reasons to leave early.

Wahoo! Wahoo! Rip, Zip, Bazoo! I Yell. I Yell. For O.S.U.

Four years in the program and finished his degree. Why put in a 5th year for "free?"

HS

Maybe so he could elevate his draft stock.... to get drafted.

Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.

I can't believe you got 2 Disagree Votes.  Ironic part is I wouldn't be shocked if this was exact feeling (especially considering the possibility for injury).

HS
analyticalguy's picture

I agree with you.  "Improving his draft stick" in order to be, say, a 6th or 7th round pick a year later wouldn't necessarily mean he'd have a higher chance of sticking with a team. And he wouldn't necessarily be drafted and would incur the risk of injury. The young man has finished his degree and is taking his shot. Good luck to him!

Powell had a pretty good season last year and put up great numbers at the Combine (4.47-40 I believe at 6'3 210 lbs), yet still went undrafted for some reason. Sometimes, people just make snap judgements and they stick regardless. Powell is going to one of the best environments for DBs in the league. Seattle's coaches, Thomas, Sherman, Chancellor, and the rest of the LOB will help teach him the ropes in the league and he'll get a paycheck. Tyvis has the physical attributes needed to kill it in the NFL. If he can perfect his technique, he'll be starting as some team's safety.

Exactly. He didn't have anything else to prove. National Championship, multiple gold pants, multiple ints in HUGE games, multi-year starter. I think he will stick in the league for a long time. Best of luck to him

Why not get half of your Masters Degree done for "free"?

Great landing spot for Tyvis! He fits the physical mold they like up there. Hopefully he he develops and thrives.

Shocked he wasn't drafted but really happy for Tyvis - sounds like he's had a great attitude through it all.  Go learn from the best and then go be the best!

YESSSSSSSSSSIR.  I expect him to make the roster.

yes, I'm still alive

HS

First and foremost, I hope he shines and excels in the pros. He gave his all in college and I know he will for the NFL.

Man I am dissatisfied and disappointed that he didn't have his name called. I hope he makes those teams eat crow. I'm looking at you my Browns. Cleveland should have picked him up.

Damn straight Cleveland should have picked him up.

I couldn't agree more. The Browns had 14 picks and vacancies at both safety positions. Why the hell would they not take a chance on a local player that is 6'3 210 lbs and runs a 4.47-40? So freaking stupid.

If you're not from Baylor, the Browns aren't interested. Bush league franchise. The worst in professional sports.

The Browns are no longer the worst franchise in all of professional sport.

Don't root for them but they have a first class organization and top flight player personnel. Couldn't land with a better team and learn from a better group of safeties than guys like Chancellor and Thomas. Great landing spot.

That's a long way from his son.  Hope he makes the roster and makes the Mistake by the Lake regret passing over him.

HS

Hope it really works out for him. Was surprising to see a guy who got Senior Bowl and Combine invites go undrafted. He's good enough to make the League, and Seattle's a great landing spot.

Right there with you Helga - except Browns will always be my number one. Happy and excited to watch him turn some heads from Day One. Both he and Vannett have bright futures with the Hawks

Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!

It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.

Seattle > Buffalo but you have to make the roster.  Best of luck to father and son.

This will be better for him than getting drafted late by a team he wouldn't fit. I always said he is a poor man's Chancellor. Good protection if something happens to Kam.

Great points squirrel master. I had to look up who Chancellor was and where he came from. He was a three-star from Virginia Tech who didn't play safety until the pros. He's just a natural athlete just like tyvis Powell. And don't forget tyvis Powell was the first to commit to Ohio State after Tressel got fired not knowing who the coach was going to be. He is a true Buckeye

Couldn't be more happy for him. Clearly, he fits the mold in what Seattle looks for in a Safety. I remember reading about him after he signed with OSU.  His couch talked about how much he worked on his craft and even though didn't have the "stars" like many others, he was just as good, if not better. Mark my words. HE WILL SHINE in the NFL.

HS

So happy for Tyvis! Still kind of shocked he wasn't drafted but he will show them how much heart the has. Too bad he's so far from his son though

HS
youra6's picture

Also of note, his speed is very underrated... ran a 4.46 official in the combine, one of the fastest safeties in the draft.

He still needs to work on his coverage skills, but its no doubt the physical tools are there.

HS

So happy for you, Tyvis. You are with another winning organization.  You have a degree and a ring and great memories from OSU. Now go get your spot and show them what a Buckeye brings.

HS

Unlike Jalin he has a degree ( I hope he had a real major), but honestly I bet his personality didn't help his cause.  From everything I've seen he seems much more immature than most of the guys going pro.

HS
Macke777's picture

Really? There is a big difference between immaturity (any of the Ole Miss players) and having a great sense of humor like Tyvis. If NFL execs cannot tell the difference between the two, they have earned the No Fun League moniker.

Powell is one of those guys that stood out in terms of size and speed.  He is not a nasty hitter and also does not charge in to tackle.  I am still surprised no one was willing to bite on a 6'3 player who runs a 4.45.  If he can start for Seattle, I expect him to do well.

HS

Theoretically father and son could face off for the Super Bowl. That's Star Wars level awesome.

I'm sorry but this is just juvenile, it's not clever or funny it just makes them look immature.

HS

He claimed he didn't want to put on an act and act more serious (or something to that affect) and then he doesn't get drafted.  I'm just pointing out that maybe he should have been more serious.  I wish him well.

You don't appreciate Tyvis Powell's sense of humor? Ugh. It's perfectly fine to joke around OFF the field after practice as long as he gives 100% on the field and during practice.

Really feel he sticks if he stays healthy. I'll be watching for his buckeye shine.

HS

Powell definitely '' fits the mold '" . He is a big guy who can run and hit. The Seahawks will love him once they get into camp. He made the right choice leaving OSU with eligibility remaining. Another season of college would not have increased his draft status

even if he makes the team for special teams for a few years ala Austin spitler in Miami that's $900k to jump start your life and family. was surprised he wasn't a late round draftee, he has good measurable.

Why Tyvis did not get drafted is beyond my comprehension even though I am far from an NFL draft expert.

Congrats to Mr. Powell for getting a great opportunity to show how undervalued he was!

Good luck to his son also.   :~}

I don't understand why this guy was not drafted.  A big safety w/ a sub-4.5 40 should be in the top three rounds.  There were some questions about hitting and his seriousness, but someone should be able to coach some of those things up.  His game film should be decent.
