Not as exciting as the speculation (booze, black grass, and more urinals) but I'm glad to see the B deck improvements.

So we spent a ton of money getting 2,522 more seats, and now we're spending a ton of money to get rid of 2,600 seats??

Yes there probably will be, there just might not be an announcement about it.  They started selling beer throughout every concourse of the Schott this season and I never saw an announcement, just noticed at the first game of the season they were selling it in the 300 level.

Having spent most of the 2002 season with my student tickets directly behind a column in B deck, word of eliminating some of these seats sounds excellent.  Not worried about overall capacity as they obviously will cram in as many people as humanly possible when it is necessary.  I don't quite understand all of the loge box/luxury suite business though.  What is being removed and where are new ones being constructed?

I want a fall Saturday in Ohio Stadium..

Smith didn't say removing obstructed B deck seats; just a TV so you can pay $79 to better see a screen. Maybe I should have used italics.

Renovate the premium seating area to consolidate the university suites into one University Suite and add 35 large boxes and 12 luxury suites.

This sounds good right?

However, the project will result in the removal of 2,600 seats, dropping its capacity from 104,944 to 102,854.

That is until you start to read this?!?

"We are committed to providing our fans, players and coaches with one of the best facilities in the nation," Smith said at a press conference.

"improve and upgrade B-deck to include better lighting, larger televisions, and improved sound system and better scoreboards"  Woo Hoo! Seriously, the TV's were TOO small, and you couldn't see the play clock.

I'm not so sure about more adding more luxury boxes and I hope they aren't taking B deck seating on the opposite side of the field to make them. I can just see them taking the seats from the 30 yard line to 30 yard line and making more boxes! Noooo! Most of those people in the premium seats on the west side in the "chairs" seem to show up late and leave early as it is.

Go Bucks!

HS
v65animal's picture

So from this article: http://www.foxsports.com/ohio/story/ohio-stadium-renovations-buckeyes-ho...

Most of the seats lost will be on B-deck in areas that can have obstructed views and where some fans traditionally consider the view to be less than ideal.

Go Bucks!

HS
bucksfan92's picture

So OSU spent 13 million 2 years ago to add 2500 seats and didn't realize at the time that there were some structural issues with C Deck?  And can they go back to the contractor from the huge project in 2000-01 for some of the $40 million they have to spend now to fix issues that certainly shouldn't be happening had that project been done correctly?  As part of this I sure hope the fix the front of the stadium, it looks trashy with the patchwork job of blending the new construction into the old.  It also looks like I was right about not needed 2500 seats in 2014.  I suppose we will never know if this was already in the works, causing them to add the 2500 seats then, but that stadium is already at max capacity and probably will get some further reductions over the next few decades.

HS
BucksLover0214's picture

Lets get rid of thousands of seats for peasants to make sure we get more luxury seats for corporations to buy.  That will increase the home field advantage.  They sneak it in a press release about concrete improvements that everyone would be on board for.  This stinks to me.  I'm not a left wing person and don't want to dive into politics per commenting policy, but there's little here to enhance the common fan's game experience.  They will not be losing money on removing those seats, but it could limit some fans' ability to go to a game.  I have season tickets, so I'm not griping on my own behalf.  I'm just sick of the sterilization of the environment and the cash grab.

They hate us cuz they aint us!! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

HS

So where did you see the renderings?  Did you ever think some of actually want to cheer and sit in a seat?

IMO one of the worst parts about going to the Shoe is when I have to sit in seats that aren't our season tickets and I have to wonder who (or what) i have to sit next to.  There's been plenty of times where a "large" person spills over into my seat and I'm not a small guy to begin with.

I would pay extra for an actual seat and it doesn't diminish my fandom because I'm willing to do so.

HS
hetuck's picture

You said not your season tickets. I'm assuming you pay for the seat cushion rental. That is a sure way to prevent "spillage."

That's not going to happen unless they put in Grow Lights to leave on. Perhaps you forget the mud bowl that happened late in the season the last time they tried that. The grass just doesn't get enough light is what they said at the time. (Since the permanent south stands and more seating all the way around.

Ohio Stadium is sacred ground and a natitonal historical building.

$200+ "premium game" tickets I will tolerate. I will not tolerate renaming Ohio Stadium. There's already enough advertising for companies on the scoreboard and on TV, not to mention buildings already named for benefactors (Wexner Center, the Schottenstein Center). Even our AD's title is sponsored.

It needs to stop with Ohio Stadium.

Translation: That's a job for my successor.

Just a "normal" season ticket for the missus and me is right at the edge of my budget, so I'm certainly not one of the alleged throngs requesting the upgrades. Give me a good team and good atmosphere, and I'm pretty satisfied even if I can't use my phone for the four hours I'm in the Shoe. But the more this becomes just like a professional situation, complete with professional $$$ crowds, the more you risk the lessening of the emotional ties that keep college football going.

My family used to have A deck seats near the field, but the fans there were completely uptight and quick to complain -- undoubtably because they paid out the nose for tickets.

At 94 years old, is Ohio Stadium the oldest double decked concrete stadium?

HS
Oldschoolbuck's picture

I believe Camp Randall at Wiscy is older (1917).

HS
CowCat's picture

I don't see why this is necessary, apart from the structural upkeep on C deck and better TVs.

Ohio State football has no problem making money. Shoot, we had 100,000 show up for the spring game. There is no shortage of Buckeye Nation demand.

The problem with "premium" seating is that the seating can go empty, which looks embarrassing on TV.

Basically, people who can afford those tickets can also afford not to deal with bad weather or a long drive home. When I lived in Washington DC the second tier of the Redskins stadium was "club" seating , and only half full most of the time.

I don't really care how many seats there are. I just want the stadium completely filled with passionate fans.

"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"

HS
skinnytrees's picture

I really dont like that they are taking out 2600 "regular people" seats to make way for more club and luxury suites where fans are the quietest and inside drinking half the game. The slow creep to NFL stadium experience... blah

I would have been fine if they came up with a plan that was a net 0 of seats.

HS
CowCat's picture

^ This is what I'm saying. If you have premium outdoor seats with a "get away" indoors, those people have less incentive to sit in their seats in the freezing rain or snow (or when we have a big lead), so they often don't.

I'm not judging anyone's right to spend money on whatever they want -- but it looks embarassing on TV when there are empty seats that otherwise could be filled. Buckeye Nation has the largest fanbase in CFB by far (estimated 3.2 million). No problem with demand.

I want Ohio Stadium to be a loud place that opponents fear playing in (with appropriate lawful behavior, of course). If people are constantly leaving their seats, they might as well watch the game at home.

Guys - those lodge seats will be accessible to 'regular folk' as well. I'm not sure if only Donald Trump and Warrant Buffett will be the only ones that will be able to afford them. http://www.baylor-stadium.com/loge-seating/

On the other hand, if we change the name of the Stadium the only route should be to go Chic Harley or Jesse Owens. "Harley Owens' Field" or something to that matter. Or just Harley Field.
