Ohio State Basketball Recruiting Notebook: Buckeyes offer Markell Johnson

I know the kid had a ridiculous freshman year and generated some NE Ohio buzz. East Tech is my father's alma mater. Also the alma mater of the greatest OSU athlete of all time IMO, Jesse Owens.

Here are a few articles about the kid. Apparently he is a role model for many. Not too many colleges recruit the Cleveland Senate league. I know East Tech is in a rough part of town.

I am always partial to athletes from Cuyahoga County.

My wife and her brothers went to Tech in the 80s and 90s. Never heard a good story about it, can't imagine it's gotten any better. Great to see a kid from there, staying there, doing well and setting a positive example.

Markell isn't from the east side area where Tech is though. He's a west side kid that probably went there because they're the best for basketball in the city. Probably lives closer to Lincoln West or Max Hayes which have terrible basketball teams

It looks like he's playing on a court that's 60 feet long. Max

Get it Thad. Kid would be a great addition.

This would be a strong pickup if he chooses OSU.  Should be the best player in the state for 2017.

Do recruits consider things other than the hoops program and academics? Like having home-state contacts, as well as other high-quality sports teams to follow, (like football) which they can watch & root for long after their hoops career is over?

Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !

But would it be strong enough to watch the College Football Playoff with Bo Jackson?

If they're not going to get Gary Trent Jr and Jeff Boals should know where they stand since he is so tight with the whole family, Thad needs to lock this kid up. The team needs another PG so they can move Lyle to the 2.

That is some insane athletic ability. I'm pretty sure he's only listed at 6'.

Gotta be honest: Thad looks a lot more enthusiastic, in that picture, than Markell does.

I had the same thought until I saw his picture on 247. He is actually happier looking in this one with Matta. He just plain looks sick when he plays though.

A ball handler that can score, what is that? The competition doesn't look like much but this kid can definitely ball. It's time to lock down the Ohio kids and sell them on the program, starting with MJ.

I'm so old, I remember Cleveland East Tech winning the state championship in the late 50's a couple of straight years..  This kid has it. Hope we get him.

I remember those teams. Kenny Glenn went on to play for the Globetrotters.

They were probably the greatest dynasty in Ohio high school basketball history. Went to the big school state tournament six straight years. Considered best program in the country. Jerry Lucas and Middletown came up to Cleveland to play them during his prep career.

They won their first state championship in what many consider the greatest state tournament in Ohio history, it was the only year all 4 final four big school teams were undefeated. Jerry Lucas' lost his only high school game of his career to Columbus North after winning his first 76 games in the semis. East Tech won the final in sudden death overtime, first basket won. The last time I went to the state tournament, the program still has a page on that tournament in it.

Lucas said it was the most crushing loss of his career. The guy also got upset in an NCAA final on an undefeated team, losing to Cincy.

Russell 2.0. We definitely need a player that can take over a game and who is our "go to" guy down the stretch in close games.

Regardless of the competition, it looks like he has some serious skills.  Come on down, Markell!

Really happy we finally offered him. Best player in Cleveland right now out of either the class of '16 or '17 in my opinion.

Whats his FT %? The article says the staff has thoroughly scouted him. Lets hope they were paying attention when he was attempting FT's.

Hate to be that guy, but this is only an offer, and the kid can't impact the on-court results for 3 months shy of two years from now - IF he were to choose the Bucks. Sure, I'd rather be recruiting the kid, than not, and I hope that if he's an "answer" at PG, that he does choose the Bucks. But I'm far more concerned about the nearer future of Bucks' basketball and hoping this team doesn't have to go through PG struggles for another season and a half.

Is there no JC PG Thad could target to get this ship righted sooner?

The kid wouldn't even need to be a star, just big enough and solid enough to distribute and defend, and make the occasional open shot in B1G play. I'd be much more excited about that kind of news at this point. If a year from now Johnson has named the Bucks his leader and says he can't wait to sign in the fall, I'll be extremely excited. But until then...

Any idea if this kid is done growing?

Kid should have been offered forever ago. You offer kids based on talent. Academics will take care of themselves one way or other before signing day. Not offering a kid, especially in Ohio, early just seems like the wrong way to do things. He offered the kid from UA a schollie before he even played a high school game and year after year the most talented kids in the state seem to wait and wait. I'm not sure I understand what Thad is doing in Ohio truth be told. I like Thad but how on earth can you never even call a kid like Caris LeVert who grew up in Pickerington and seems headed for the NBA. I get you can't get everyone but LeVert is on the record as saying Thad never even contacted him.

HS
IronPastor's picture

I get your thought process, but Caris was a 2/3 star player only recruited by UD and Ohio U before TTUN picked him up.  He developed into a great player, but there was no way to know that going into college.  That year we got Kam and Loving, while loving hasn't panned out like we had hoped, both were 4 star recruits.  Had we picked LeVert and it not worked out and one of the other two went off, we would be saying the same but opposite thing.

It's tiring just trying to figure it all out. This is a good offer though...
