Well obviously his strategy worked

HS

As a life long mets fan, this is disappointing. DePodesta was an extremely talented guy who helped make the mets farm system one of the strongest in baseball. He had nearly complete control over draft strategy which certainly has panned out well for the mets. So when you hear the mets you may think it's a bad move, but this is a very good hire.

It'd be a great hire for the Indians, but it might take him a little while to adjust to football. It seems like Haslam is trying to think outside of the box. The problem is his decisions often seem to be the kinds that get crushed underneath the box instead of rising above it.

They didn't play 500 ball at any time during his stay until this year.  Fired as GM by the hated Dodgers in 2005 after they had their worst finish in 11 years.

Hope for the best, but the move does not inspire any freaking confidence in this corner

I am not sure as to how the mets record defines him...as the individual who was in charge of scouting and drafting he job is scouting players to join the organization and finding hidden talent. In baseball, who you draft today doesn't change your organization for a few years. The best players in baseball do not just come up to the majors(there are a handful of exceptions) but usually players are in the minors for a couple seasons before coming up. So the early records are that way because the team sucked, he wasn't the GM for the mets so he wasn't signing free agents. To me, the early records are an indication of how poorly the mets farm system was before he got there. Now it is one of the best and brightest.

I think its a very interesting and good move for the organization. Screw it...things cant get much worse can they?

If this works out and proves to be a success it could change the game forever. However its either going to work or crash and burn...no grey area on this one. Things just got very, very interesting in Berea and I am excited to see how it turns out.

Go Browns.

I agree -- and I think we're the only two people in the world that think so.  This type of move would've been deemed crazy in baseball not too long ago, right?  Now it's pretty commonplace.

Who knows, the same could be true in football.  If your organization hasn't been doing well, why keep doing things the same way?  Maybe mixing it up will create different results.

HS
HotSauceCommittee's picture

Count me in as well. I don't mind the move and find it outside of the box. I mean it could blow up in our faces or we could end up right back where we are now, which is losing ALL THE FREAKING TIME. I am used to losing, which is sad.

HS
logamaniac's picture

At minimum this means they should draft better since it's not just some scouts eyeball test.  Or a text message sent to the gm from a player on draft day.

HS
John Cooper's lucky pig's picture

I'm sure there are analytical elements of Moneyball that are applicable to football, but wasn't the essence of Moneyball the need for small-market teams to be able to compete in a league with no salary cap?

The Browns aren't going to be turned into winners by saving money and finding the best undrafted free agents. They will become winners by consistently making good draft choices and introducing stability into the organization.

HS
d5k's picture

You should realize that some of the best poker players in the world are really good backgammon players.  My point being that because this guy is good at solving one system of constraints doesn't mean he would not be able to solve any other problem.  But Haslam has failed in practically every other decision so far.

HS
John Cooper's lucky pig's picture

I absolutely agree with you, D5K. My question is not whether this new hire is competent it is whether the Moneyball system, which was specifically designed to deal with challenges faced by small market teams in a league with no salary cap, has as much relevance in the NFL.

HS
BBQ_Fan's picture

I see what you did there D5K

HS
VanillaStache's picture

Very valid point and I think you answered your own question. I don't think its all about saving money or finding the best deals, certainly a side of it but not all of it. He's here to make sure the scouting is top notch, we draft well and we stick to the numbers....not fly by the seat of their fancy pants and listen a homeless guy or draft a CB they never even spoke to before the draft. it is for sure a new concept and very well could be the worst thing to happen to football since Art Modell leaving CLE but none the less im excited.

If I'm missing your point let me know Coop.

In Moneyball they were looking for undervalued assets. In a salary cap league, that should be even more important since you are resource constrained in the same way the A's were.

My main pleasure in the news today has been watching the stodgy old time NFL scouts and gurus harumph about how the NFL is so much more complicated than baseball and this will never work. They sound exactly like the baseball scouts sounded in Moneyball.

It's not just NFL or MLB scouts; my experience is many people believe gut feel is better than analytics and that they can make better decisions base don gut feel. While part of gut feel is experience and the ability to recognize what is important, all too often gut feel has a heavy does or "run with the pack" so when gut feel is wrong you rationalize the bad decision by saying "well, everyone thought..." To me, the key is to use both analytics and experience to make better decisions; the challenge is to get people to accept their decision making process has some flaws and can be improved. No is analytics perfect, it needs a feedback loop to validate the assumptions in the model as well; plus a reliable way to gather data to ensure the results ar based on valid data.

An example is Saban's system for assessing players to see if they have the attributes he believes are needed to play a particular position.

Jerry has been the main problem since 1994. 1 step forward - 5 steps back. But Garrett has major issues with game management and  player development. Hell, his best year as a head coach was 2014. That was the first full season after Jerry stripped him of play calling duties and the team went 11-5 and won a playoff game.

So, the Sabremetrics guys are sitting around the conference table looking at free agents and draft choices:

Sashi: We're looking for a QB who can get us 5 yards on every play. We'll always get first downs, and the metrics say the team with the most first downs wins most of their games.

dePo: Here's a QB who leads college football in drawing the defense offsides with his "hard count".

Haslam: But, he's 5'6" 185# slow and can't throw!

dePo: Do we care how he gets his 5 yards?

Sashi: No, we do not.

Haslam: (sigh) All right, sign him.

I know, I know.  The Browns and their 5 remaining fans are low hanging fruit for members to kick sand in the eyes of, here.  It's fine.  I've no shame in being one of the last, so let me have it and rain down the insults for me being one.  I've thick skin.  I can take it.  Most of it won;t even register as I hear it everyday during the season. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

OT:  Rather than debate the merits and place for WAR and similar analytics in football as some of the 11W commentariat are attempting to tackle, I'll present it in a different light..

..I support it for the opposite reasons that most ppl hate it.  Most ppl are claiming it's out of touch, shows detachment and has little place in football.  I believe it shows a desire to win.  If it doesn't happen, oh well, nothing I haven't seen all of my adult life from that organization.  I'm used to it.  I know nothing else from them.  Sure I could take the easy route and pick a team in the playoffs this year to hang my identity with, but that's just not in my make-up.  I'll keep the faith to the end.  They're trying something new, and that's something I've never been able to say.  Ever.  Kind of like Michigan winning.

I grew up with the Bengals being the laughing stock of the NFL and fodder for every late night talk show - not that they've won anything or even a play-off since - but still, they seem to have turned it around and trending, if even at a snail's pace, the right direction.  I don't want to be a Bengals fan.  I don't want to be a Patriots fan.  I don't want to be a Seahawks fan.  I love Clevelanders. I want to be a Cleveland fan.

I am one of those fans.  I just don't harbor any illusions that this reboot will turn out any better than the previous iterations.  I still love and root for the Browns, but I'm not holding out hope that anything is really changing but the names outside the doors of the offices in Berea.  I'll still watch.  I'll still agonize.  But I won't believe again until I see it on the field for a sustained period of time.  Even if these guys are geniuses, that seems like a long, long way off.

They told the Cubs the same thing when Theo Epstein was made GM a few years back and he presented his reorganization flowchart; that they're still just the Cubs and will never win.  They're on the verge of being the baddest ass team in all of MLB for about the next 5-7 years as the NL central prepares to become their annual doormat.

Meh. Who am I kidding. You're probably right. This is Cleveland. We're the worst. We wouldn't know how to act if this place claimed a title anyway, truth be told.  Maybe I should just embrace the futility and wear it as a badge of honor.  Hope for the best, but prepare for the much more likely.

This is the first time in my entire life I have been this excited to be a Browns fan. Those of you mocking this move are extremely shortsighted. This move is either a stroke of pure genius, or a ticking time bomb waiting to explode all over the organisation's face. This is the exact type of move the Browns should be making, simply from a pure game-theory standpoint. They are the team with literally nothing to lose and everything to gain, therefore they should be making risky moves that have huge upside potential. Even if this does fail spectacularly, its still the right move, but I am optimistic that it will work, a phrase I never use when describing my feelings towards a Brown's offseason move.

Analytics is the future of sports, and this guy is the original architect. Everyone is now using it in baseball thanks to this guy. The Warriors are eviscerating everyone in Basketball by utilising an analytic model, and even in football, The Patriots have been using some form of it for a while now. This guy had the Mets rolling before he left, their farm system is stocked and they went to the World Series this year, do you really think he would leave that situation if he didn't believe that it could be done in the NFL?

I really don't see what the issue with this move is, at  least they are finally trying to win for once in my life.
