Who is Chad?
Him and Reuben are RUINING OHIO STATE
"Medicine is not a science" - Leo Spaceman
Thad is the coach who took us to the final 4
Chad is the guy who coaches now
behold the silver bullets
Thad is the coach who took us to the final 4
In case you're curious, it's Mr. Spray
I'm starting to think Ron Lewis took us once, and Jared Sullinger took us the other time.
Remembering Sully.... It seems so long ago. Sully could do it all, especially for a guy that (realistically and jokingly) had all of these great basketball talents, yet wasn't exactly athletically gifted. He reminded me of Charles Oakley with true scoring ability. Great size, able to score from almost anywhere, yet he had problems jumping over a phone book. I know that Sully NEEDED to go to the NBA because of timing and MONEY, but a healthy Sully could have made the Bucks a good team by himself had he stayed for 4 years. I hate the NBA now because of all of the high schoolers and underclassmen that get drafted while they could be doing something that MIGHT be better for themselves in the long run along with doing something better for the school by graduating.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not downing Sully. He is averaging more than 10 points per game and 7 boards per game as a pro. While those are not "superstar" numbers, they are solid and I feel like he is doing Ohio State proud. Maybe, because I'm old, I just wish that players had to follow the rules of football players (years removed from high school before turning pro), but hey... I'm still a true opponent of the NCAA football playoffs as well as the selection committee that makes those decisions. Sure, Sully would still be gone, but the Buckeyes would have maybe the most dominant guard in the nation in D'Angelo Russell right now. If young players would understand that Ohio State is a great place, other schools like Duke, North Carolina, and Kentucky wouldn't be the only places to play just one season and leave. Oh...and for all of the people blaming Thad Matta for this slow starting 2015-2016 squad, you are barking up the wrong tree. You guys should get in line with all of the people trying to get rid of Luke Fickell for so long now. 2 great coaches...underrated and hated by the fans that should be supporting them... It's no wonder why we Buckeye fans are considered the worst fans of their teams in any sport on any level. We EXPECT perfection and perfection means winning titles, but no team will ever be that dominant in these days.
We have the largest football following of any school and a top notch basketball program...but we fans expect way too much. I was thoroughly upset after watching UConn spank our beloved Bucks, but the squad will get only worse without SUPPORTING our squads and their coaches.
"I hope they're last in everything". One of Meyer's comments when speaking of TTUN after being hired at Ohio State.
what are realistic expectations for the basketball program? we certainly should be in the top half of the BIG every year. no?
MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS
I don't expect perfection, but I'd like to see some progress. This team is young I know, but they seem to always play tentative and let other teams dictate the tempo. Their defense needs improving as they are complete suckers for the dribble drive, then the dish off to the backside cutter for the easy lay ups. I have seen that over and over. That is just fundamentals that need to be corrected. They need to come out at the start of the game with their hair on fire, and not get pushed around and perhaps get that attitude that they can dish it back out as well. Basketball is a game of skill to be sure, but it's also a game of attitude and hustle for 40 minutes. I haven't seen that "fire" yet....
Saban on a cart eating cold pizza
This team is young I know, but they seem to always play tentative and let other teams dictate the tempo.
Young, and on the road, against a quality opponent = ^THIS. I don't think anyone was (or should be) surprised by this performance.
“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” – Theodore Roosevelt
and Thad is also the guy who thought Amir Williams was a good basketball player.....
"and Thad is also the guy who thought Amir Williams was a good basketball player....."
And so did Sean Miller (Arizona), Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), Billy Donovan (Florida), John Calipari (Kentucky), Tom Izzo (MSU), and 11 other major college coaches. According to 247Sports, Amir received offers from all of these coaches. So, they all must have thought Amir would be a good basketball player.
If you want to say that Thad and his assistants didn't do a good job to develop Amir, then fine. But your statement is misleading.
And during Amir's junior and senior years, you could tell Thad was extremely frustrated with Amir's play. This resulted in a benching and reduced playing time. I don't think Thad thought Amir was a good basketball player.
After careful analysis I've concluded that the BasketBucks need significant improvement in the following areas:
Basketball. More specifically, offense and defense.
You "hold" a team to 75 and you still get blasted by 20? A truly pathetic performance. I'll be watching that Kentucky game just to see how hilarious the final score is. In fact I'll be watching every game just as I have for the last 10 years but I don't expect much improvement out of this squad aside from the basic things that any fool picks up from playing with the same people multiple times.
Oh well. Hope this team can compete when B1G games start up at the end of the month.
Why does it feel in the last couple years whenever I turn a game on and Ohio State loses the other team is always shooting "lights out"? We just seem to never have a good shooting consistent squad anymore? Just not sold on shooting 20 plus 3's anymore when we don't even try for an inside game. We were solid when we had post play with Tank and Sullinger few years back.
because Thad thinks defense will somehow magically make offense, he doesnt play guys who can score, unless they can play defense. Aaron Craft was actually a pretty good scorer in high school, got here and became a turd on offense. They dont develop scorers, and clearly arent even trying to develop a defense
Successful people do what they have to, whether they feel like it or not
Aaron Craft could run an offense and drive and score.
I've noticed the difference ever since the Buckeyes lost Chris Jent as a shooting coach.
That's how winners play. We convince the other guy he's making all the right moves.
You got it! I've been calling for Jent's return also.
Newcomerstown Trojans. Between Woody and Beaver.
Totally agree about the lack of post play. We need some blue collar dudes that can make free throws. Enough of these soft "stretch 4s." UCONN manhandled is and make our hoopsters look like little boys.
A stretch 4 does more than stand in the post, they can actually shoot a basketball outside of the paint. We dont have stretch 4's, we have pansies disguised as grown men
Hahaha. I'm agreeing with you. A stretch 4 in the buckeye offense seems to be a soft lanky dude with a jumper that can't bang. I miss having some true power forwards with skills that rarely play beyond 15 feet from the rim and can clear the glass. Sully and Thomas had jump shots, but their best work was inside and midrange. And they were down to get dirty. You're right, man. We have too many pansies.
and that is directly related to coaching....
True stretch 4 guys are a rare breed.
LeBron, Byrd, Magic, Jordon, Nowitzki, Durant were/are really stretch 4 guys meaning they can post you up, get rebounds and shoot the long ball. They stretch your defense. They don't have to be big to play big.
We just need some guys to get in there and lock down the paint both on D and O.
"Most Noahs have two of everything, he's got four tonight" - Gus Johnson on Noah Brown's 4 TD catches against Oklahoma.
I always thought bird was more 4 than 3. great at both.
I didn't make my point very well.
I was saying that guys who are called 'stretch 4s' really are just guys who can do a lot on the inside and outside regardless of size.
Rarely do you see a guy like that in college. Maybe only Byrd or Magic had that ability in college. Jordan didn't and LeBron didn't go to college.
Most guy become the equivalent to a 'stretch 4' in the NBA by working hard on their game. It takes a ton of time to become an effective player that does things like that. Those that do get paid a ton.
defensively bird played the 3&4 and on occasion actually @ the 5 defensively. I think bird had better handles than LeBron. I feel fortunate having watched the bird/magic era of the nba. I think the nba was @ its best during those years. offense and defense was more balanced. most games were in the 100's. the nba really fell off for me in the 90's when the knicks (for example) were winning games 88-84 etc.
The team came out flat and unprepared. It's become a norm the past two seasons and now this year.
This team needs three things
1. A better coach
2. Better players
3. Well I think 1 and 2 covers all of the actual problems
You forgot better fans, as they are afflicted by entitled, whining backstabbers, at least on these forums.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
You are correct we need better fans, the fans that go to the games are pathetic, dont cheer for the team and sit there and crochet blankets. We on the forum's who are pissed off with the product are not backstabbers, we want the team to be good, and we criticize the source of the actual problem
We ...are pissed off with the product ...and we criticize the source of the actual problem
Has this type of harsh criticism worked in your life? With 18-22 year old kids?
The criticism I'm seeing isn't constructive or helpful.
If calls to fire Matta or for Loving to sit/transfer, etc or to savage players who are no longer at OSU aren't backstabbing, what would be?
You're right. We should watch every other top program maintain their high level of competitiveness year in and year out while our program steadily declines for three straight seasons and say absolutely nothing about it. Even when the team is embarrassed by a below average opponent on national television in a game that could absolutely affect recruiting in the near future. To do otherwise would "backstab" the team.
Keep up the good work, team! You're so close!
Very young team, this will be a very long season.
First and foremost, the Lyle experiment at PG should be OVER. He's not getting it, and its hurting his overall game. Second, I'm done with the offense!. Time to change it up..enough of the threes...let's penetrate a little..maybe some iso...maybe GO DOWN LOW MORE...Every possession its Loving for three, Tate for three, Loving for three...This was a pretty embarrassing performance today...doesn't make any sense when you play the 10th ranked team in the country to only losing by FOUR and go on to get throttled by an average UCONN team..I'm not even sure If I'm going to watch the UK game right now..that game is going to be so brutal I might have nightmares...I'll never understand why Thad recruited virtually one player (loving) over a span of TWO YEARS...no wonder they're so young..
3..2..1...let her fly...in and out..
I think it's too soon to pull the plug on Lyle as a PG, but man I do not like the flow of the offense when he is running it. A point guards first job is to set the tempo of the offense and frankly right now we don't have one. Aaron Craft definitely had his limitations as an offensive player but one thing he did well was set a tempo and pace for the offensive and right now we desperately missing an identity.
Also, where is the inside out action to this team? A half court offense requires balance and we are not getting it. Sadly I don't think it because of the limitation of our big men we just aren't giving them opportunities to get in a rhythm. Most uncontested threes come from passes in the low post. I have no problem with the amount of three's that were taken, but I do have a problem with the shot selection of them.
Biggest problem with my post it only address SOME of the offensive problems. Defensive is a whole other story.
Lyle is NOT a PG anymore than he is a center! He's a SG that can't really shoot, but has decent handles. AJ IS a true PG who should be starting, except that Lyle had more stars as a HS recruit.
All progress has resulted from people who took unpopular positions. -Adlai Stevenson, governor, US ambassador
The biggest problem I see is no one has a good handle. Guys are plenty athletic but they can't drive or make any sort of move to the rim without losing the ball. That's why we pass it around and jack up 3's because no one can or wants to drive inside. We are also young so the defense only comes when we are energized. As soon as we get down our defense goes out the window.
My lady is a UK fan and is laughing about how UK will curbstomp OSU by 40 next week.
unless this is said fan...
You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton
One night stand her.
LOLOLOL - Best comment Knar
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
Seattle Sounders 2019 MLS Champions
If the wife gave me a hall pass, she might be on the A list.
That "IF" will never happen and you know it Knar
Cant, she is a fantastic person. It isn't her fault that the basket Buckeye guys suck at basketball.
Ok, she's great. You can make her fantastic by converting her to a Buckeye fan.
With the way the basketball team plays? At least someone gets to be happy during basketball season. She can be a buckeye football fan, but I wouldnt wish to convert anyone to our misery
Actually, I'd rather lose like we do than win like Kentucky does.
sour grapes -- Remember conley & odom . Russell to only Thad could only get 1 5 star last year. He would take all the 5 stars one and done that he could.
Oden. The rest I didn't understand.
You realize were the UK equivelent in college football...
Not even close
Besides we usually make the tournament and UK can't even make a damn bowl game. But yeah pretty much the same
Not the improvement I was expecting. Said it the other day, we will go as Lyle goes. He was awful, both ends of the floor.
Yikes, glad I am still working a few more Saturdays and got to miss this.
You should be. It was brutal.
Missed it too thought it began 7 my time put my son to bed it was over baruch hashem
I'm a Buckeye fan through and through so I'll watch the game against Kentucky...but...probably with my eyes closed.
This team needs to play with fire and passion for 40 minutes to be competitive against decent teams. Too many players are very laid back and look lackadaisical (Lyle, Loving, KBD). Thad does not bring the fire and in your face toughness that this team needs. Might be time for new, younger, energetic blood to get the most out of the players. These guys just go through the motions way too often.
Totally agree about the lack of energy and urgency from the players. These guys act like it's a regular season NBA game just going through the motions. Meanwhile the teams we play are fired up and ready to battle.
Loving, I think has played hard. He's just smooth and his last 2 years of laziness stick to him.
KBD, I said in another thread, think needs to be more assertive. Great all around player, now need the attitude.
Lyle, I have said will determine how we go. He was awful today, just plain awful, both ends of the floor. He's a lazy player to me right now.
I've know KBD since he was in grade school. He is friends with my daughter. He has always had a laid back attitude and never looked to be aggressive even in high school. I thought he needed a coach that would push him harder to try to get him to play with more passion. He's very talented, but very quiet, non-assertive and has grown up getting pretty much anything he wants.
Last year the team was just disappointing. This year, it just feels like they are young. I think they will begin to gel as the season wears on and hopefully they will be competitive by the end of it.
Maybe it's because I had low expectations and thought this would be a rebuilding year, but I find this year far less stressful than last.
Deep breaths everyone, it will be okay.
"If we worked half as hard as our band, we'd be champions." - Woody Hayes
We shot 5/22 from 3 point land. So we can't play D, can't shoot FT's very well and we go 23% from downtown (not to mention 36% from the field - with the emotional appearance of a sloth I might add.....can someone please explain why Ohio State continues to shoot so many 3's....This team will be lucky to not finish 13 or 14 in the BIG. Thank goodness Rutgers and Minny appear to be even more horrendous (if that's even possible)......
Man, everyone is already done with this team/coach and it's not even January? I realize there is still football to be played, but yikes!
I'll take credit for this loss - I didn't get my jersey on until halfway through the 1st half.
You da man Spray
Uconn showed what a balanced offense should look like. Every time their center had position they went to him..I counted at least five times Giddens had position down low and loving instead threw it along the three point line and eventually chucked one up...that is piss poor fundamental basketball..you can't win games by not having a balanced offense...the way this team shoots, threes should be a last option...not the first...
I feel like MacDaddyBuckeyeSupreme has all the answers.
Any chance for a TV replay of this game, and where? Thanks in advance for anyone with the goods!
OSU didn't execute and lost to horrible officiating. BOTH things can be true
Run! Just run away!
I'm a glutton for punishment. Sucks because this was one of 4 games I only cared to see in the non-conference. Guess that's what happens when you let the wife talk you into early xmas shopping...
Just watch UK next Saturday. Will likely be a redux.
If you do catch a replay, watch the first 8 minutes of the 2nd half, and sparingly on much else - those were the best minutes of the game.
The game can be summed up by the fact that UConn was 1-10 from the field and the Bucks went on an 11-0 run to start the second half and it was never even close to being competitive even at that point.
I was flipping channels and came across this game and watched for about 5 minutes. They looked awful. I saw players yelling back at an assistant coach after he was talking to them about a blown defensive assignment. This team reminds me of those dreadful teams I used to have to watch growing up. the Eldon Miller, Randy Ayers, etc. teams. I know they are young, but holy shit they look awful. Hopefully Thad can hold them together this year as they take their lumps because it is going to be an ugly ride.
Who was the player talking back to the coach?
I think I saw it too. I believe it was Tate after he committed a turnover. He was yelling at one of the assistants
We need to let AJ Harris play more point guard with Lyle at the two spot. Lyle just isn't a point guard right now. The offense is stagnant with him running the show. He can make more of an impact playing the two spot. I have no idea why they moved Jae'Sean Tate to the two guard. He should at least be playing the three spot.
Grandstaff needs more minutes.
I'm torn with Lyle on the floor now - I feel like they were really clicking on defense today with Lyle on the floor in the 2nd half, but he doesn't add a ton in the scoring column in that spot. Who are you gonna pull to move Lyle to the 2?
Clicking with the o'lay defense
Ok, I'm going to try to be respectful here, but did you actually watch Lyle play defense today?
I would probably pull Bates Diop right now. He's not playing with any energy, he's not making shots, not rebounding or defending. Give him a wake up call make make him come off the bench. I'd start this lineup 1. Harris 2. Lyle 3. Tate 4. Loving and 5. Thompson. I want to see more Grandstaff and more plays drawn up to get him open shots.
"Grandstaff needs more minutes."
I thought one of the jobs of a coach was to B U I L D a program. Urban did that. Matta hasn't. Hell we have one upper classman on the team.. Matta cannot recruit and B U I L D a program. Recruiting kids who stay for a year accomplishes nothing. Not only freshman but sophmores and juniors can't wait to get off the team.
Yes....he heeds to go .
Just to play devil's advocate, Calipari recruits one and dones all over the place - would you consider that a program that isn't being built into something worthwhile?
believe it or not calipari is a great coach. being able to consistently shoot FT's @ UK is a thing.. I think a big part of thad's problems have to do with his physical limitations. if he can't keep this program in the top half of the BIG every year than TOSU is not getting their money's worth imo. if this team doesn't improve by the BIG tournament and Thad doesn't get it turned in the right direction in 2016, TOSU will be looking for a new coach. the end result is the head coach's responsibility end of story.
Damn, and we still have to play Kentucky.
I think people are forgetting how young this team is and how many players we lost last year. The talent is there, their just young and inexperienced. In time, maybe in February this team will look different and will gel by then.
I'm not sure how you can mention Kentucky and then go on to excuse the team's failure by saying they're young and lost players. Young talent and roster turnover are what Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Arizona, etc. are all built on.
Adolphus's OSU career doesn't need to be over just yet!
It's a good thing we haven't played against a top tier basketball team yet. It'd be REALLY ugly
Go Bucks and michigan STILL SUCKS!
Maybe we need to try Louisvilles recruiting program. They haven't got popped yet and probably won't. That will help against the NCAA one and done rule.. LOL
Yesterday was really disappointing. I thought we'd struggle early and then get things going but we never did. UConn really isn't that good of a team, but was coming off an embarrassing performance and really was focused on getting this W. Considering they have been relegated to a mid major league they have to get their quality Ws in OOC games and this is probably the only quality one they can get this year.
The thing that bothers me the most is something I have noticed in 4 of the 5 losses (all except the Memphis game) is that when crunch time approaches and we are behind, there is absolutely no sense of urgency. I don't mean that I want to see guys jacking up ridiculous shots, but when you are down 6 or 8 or, oh say 16, with 5 minutes to go, there is no more time for lallygagging around the perimeter. All offensive movement needs to be towards the basket. Chances are you will either get a good look, or a foul, or maybe both. I know that playing from behind is not something we are used to as fans, or that these players are used to, but the way things are going we are going to be in this situation a lot this year and we need to find ways to extend the game, not end it more quickly.
I knew there would be growing pains.... THAT was pathetic.
Terrible shooting, terrible help d, terrible on ball d, Lyle after 10 games is looking terrible at PG, Loving is just chucking the ball at times.... no attempt (it seemed) at trying to get the ball down low...
UConn is not very good, and they made us look like shit.. And ***** 1 guy states it's time for Thad to go and it gets labeled a "fire matta thread"...
His last 3-4 teams have been ave. at best. Playing 15 cupcakes gets you to 20 w's.... but those teams weren't very good.... THIS one is pathetic. Seems to be a good group of kids, but I see absolutely no cohesiveness.... appears like 10 individuals on a Sunday church floor getting together to play teams..
I certainly won't say fire Matta.... but we trending downwards the last 5 yrs...and i'm not sure if it's improving?
Giddens needs to play 90% of the time at C..
Grandstaff needs to play before Kam.... every damn time. I'm tired of waiting for this kid to contribute more than one shot and 3 to's...
Tate... should be a 6th man.
The offense should RUN THROUG KBD first & Loving second, then Giddens... LYLE last- his game is not working at PG.. I just don't see it...
I could be wrong, but I swear I see the handwriting all over the wall.
