On to 8 - 0 next. Having been at the game, I was surprised by the black-out showing. Still doesn't top a sea of scarlet. Also, the officiating was just as bad as the MSU game. Targeting call with 5 minutes left in a game that was handled?!? Come on.

I hate the offseason.

HS
MN Buckeye's picture

Seems like the refs look for a targeting call against us in a key game every year

HS

I mean, it was definitely targeting, a proper call, and the legal punishment.

Or, maybe he meant "complicated". That could be good, as in complex, multi-faceted, or bad, as in overly complicated. I'm going with the former.

Thank god you didn't upload some of the disgusting tweets. Barrett played his heart out last night and should continue to play. But, some fans and reporters are being completely tactless. JT's running and his abilities to make the right reads are making the difference in these games. Cardale is a more than capable runner, he just is trying too hard to keep passing options open.

HS
Hovenaut's picture

Second this.

It was baffling to spend time here after the win watching some go right out of their heads over the QB change (as it should have happened from week 1)...and that's putting it mildly.

If JT has the gig, great...and I'm going to support that. But not at the expense of bashing the other guy...unreal.

The bigger picture? It's all good.

Hov I totally agree.  I'm not a big fan of Cardale on or off the field but it's all within degrees of good.  He's still a very talented player and a good person.  Some of the stuff going around is just tactless.  People make him out to be the bottom rung but in reality he's pretty darn good.  Think bottom on the field - Bauserman - off the field Lawrence Phillips.

HS
labuck's picture

It's unfortunate that the coaches run two different offenses with the two qbs. Cardale is often looking at 3rd and long because they want to put Braxton at qb and run the wildcat. The poor guy cannot get into a rhythm because of all the tricks the offense wants to run. The coaches also do not play to Cardale's strengths of deep outs and deep passes. With that said JT looked really good last night. I just think the play calling is not great at this time.

HS
bigtenspeed's picture

I want Cardale to succeed as much as everyone else but there have been quite a few play calls that would've worked with accurate passes. He's had chances and for whatever reason just doesn't have it yet. I hope he figures it out since I love the Cardale story.

HS
IGotAWoody's picture

I think both observations are correct. I agree that we need to stop the wildcat stuff and keep our primary QB behind center. It's clearly messing with Cardale's rhythm. But I also am confounded by Cardale's inaccuracy on short and intermediate throws. More times than not, his throws are at least a little off target, even when he throws a catchable ball. Far too often, tho, he's off the mark enough that the ball is not catchable or it requires a great catch to reel in.

This game was just a blast to watch after mid way through the 2nd. Kids and coaches smiling, rowdy crowd, awesome environment.... .. just overall what everyone has been looking for, for the past 6 weeks.

HS
southalabamabuckeye's picture

The targeting penalty was bad.  The very next play Ohio State forced a Sackenberg fumble and recovered.  The ball usually doesn't lie.  JT is clearly the best option at QB.  With a week to take #1 reps and then a bye week he will get the timing with Zone 6.  We are 7-0 with a chance to go 8-0.  Go Buckeyes!

HS
BuckTheSystem's picture

Exactly. I literally yelled, "Ball never lies!" that very next play. That was perfect!

HS
MikeLew's picture

I...disagree pretty strongly with that. That play was practically textbook targeting.

I really don't understand fans booing a kid who is a student athlete and is working his butt off to entertain these said fans. This isn't the NFL where QBs are making millions of dollars. You can pick your favorite QB but Urban is not going to make a change based off of your booing. He'll make a change if he thinks it's the right thing to do for the players and the team. These so-called fans need to go back and read up on Cardale and his story - what this kid has been through in life.  Agree that Urban needs to re-evaluate the position but leave that to him.  Give your opinion to your neighbor and friend but please just stop the collective booing.

HS

I didn't hear the booing on TV. When was it predominant, or was it just a few fans?

HS
GoBuckeyes1020's picture

There was a smattering of boos early and they were quite noticeable when Cardale overthrew the pass in the flats in the third quarter. I think JT replaced him the next series. SAD TO HEAR THAT. I think JT is the better option but why boo? Do people really think if They boo it might actually affect Urban's decision? Sat in front of an ass clown that complained the entire game. You are booing a guy who led us in the most amazing three game stretch in buckeye history. Seriously?! Trust Meyer to make the right decisions. The last time I remember a situation even remotely close to this was in 1996 when a certain former coach decided to screw with a lineup that had delivered a 10-0 record only to see it slip away in The Game when he decided to start 'the other guy' who was the 'fans choice'.

I was a Knicks season ticket-holder during the Patrick Ewing era and was always astounded when so-called "fans" booed him at times.  I mean, the sweat was already pouring off of him just several minutes into games because he gave an all-out effort all the time.

i could never understand booing your team or any player on your team.  And to boo Cardale after what he accomplished last year?!  Are you kidding me?!  If he does nothing else, he deserves to be in the Buckeyes Hall of Fame.

I think "fans" who boo probably never played a varsity sport in high school or college and have no true appreciation for how difficult it is to excel in big-time college sports.

I hear you, but it did seem like the chanting usually started after he was already in the game?  If anyone booed Cardale Jones, they should have to go down to the field, suit up, and run a few plays under center with the world watching.

STOP coddling CJ.  He's a starter just like everyone else.... so if he's sucking complete butt, like he is, then he needs to understand it.  There is NOTHING wrong with the fans supporting, yelling, or rooting for JT.  This is a COMPETITION, and JT is winning that comp and deserves to be the starter.

This whole CJ is the starter has become nonsensical at this point.

A. He can't make the correct read option.

B.  He struggles at audibles.

C.  He can't hit the broad side of a barn.

D.  He can't dump the ball off.

E.  He's not looking off wr's...

F.  He won't throw it long into coverage.

G.  His scrambling even looks bad.

Name me one thing exactly that CJ does better than JT.  And it aint the deep ball throw, as he's maybe completed one 7 games into the season....

Love the kid, but if hadn't lost the starting spot last night then someone please wake Urban out of his coma.

Amazing the selective memory you have. up until Maryland JT wasn't lighting up the world with his play either. And Cardale had a nice game last week as well. I could careless who starts as long as we keep winning. I think Coach Meyer is a pretty capable HC. He happy enjoy, if this team is good enough to repeat they will and a big reason is Urban Meyer.

JR - your comments are a bit harsh; but pretty well on the mark. Without the read option, defenses can key on Zeke and stuff the run. CJ looks tentative and does not have a deep threat like Devin Smith to bail him out. The red zone problems are not new: remember the first quarter against Alabama. This is a competition and he clearly is second best. Urban has given CJ every opportunity to succeed and he has not. It is time to go all in with JT.

Cardale had a rough night, but he's far from the horrible QB some are making him out to be.  He's done a lot for this University, helped it shine when the world has us losing every game.  I hate to say it, but it could be that he's busy looking over his shoulder and pressing things... Just my two cents, take it or leave it.  Btw, I've long been a believer that JT is the better QB for Urban Meyer's system, but I refuse to bash Cardale Jones because of it.  Anyway, go Bucks!  7-0!

Watched the entire game, didn't hear Cardale get booed. Heard the crowd chant JT's name. Well-deserved. They both want to win, but the offense when JT is in is so much smoother. Instantly adds a wrinkle that opens up the passing game.

Yes, Cardale was AMAZING the last 3 games last year. And he has had some highlights this year. But as one commenter stated, how many games farther can we go with 2 or 3 opening drives ending in punts?

The coaches obviously see something in practice that Cardale is doing to hold his job. Unfortunately it's not translating to the field right now.

Undisputed.

HS

I really, really appreciate what Cardale Jones was able to do for us during that three game stretch. But, I'm just not seeing any improvement from him so far this season, whereas J.T. seems to have complete command of the offense when he is under center. I don't like to doubt Urban Meyer, but if I'm him, Barrett is my guy moving forward.
