I for one am excited to see the different alternate jerseys every year.

Yes - love it!
I can't wait for the alternate uniform trend to die. Harbaugh had it right when talking to Nike. We have 2 uniforms home & away, no more no less
Does this mean I'm old now?
Either old, stoic, or a combination. Sorry! #future

Alternative uniforms twice or three times a year!!! Love them!
Thrice it is!
If people can't handle it for one game...
"Year for what?"
Right? It's only one game....I personally feel it should be a couple times a year....but I'm happy with once a year. People need to realize that the times are changing and us younger generation nowadays like these new cool alternate uniforms...it helps with recruiting honestly because they like wearing them and I think they think it helps them standout.
Go read the comments by players on the other thread. They will wear them but it's nothing big and it wasn't any part of their recruiting. One of the players last week said it was something the press made up.
It could be one of those things though where they don't want to the whole world to know they like looking cool.
Bleachers said teams that went to alternant unis showed no improvement in recruiting. Oregon tried to make a big deal out it but recruits said it was NOT a consideration when they committed but the up tempo was big. Many had the answer that it was a press thing. Look at Kwon's interview today when the press ask him to please say he loved it so they have a story.
Bleachers said teams that went to alternant unis showed no improvement in recruiting.
Would anyone in their right mind actually expect recruits make alt unis a factor in their recruitment? Of course not. It's just an added perk, something that creates buzz and gets recruits attention. Similar to getting to meet LeBron on the sidelines.
Just depends on the recruit - I remember Dontre and a couple others tweeting out last year they'd wish the higher ups would let them do more with the uniforms. To each their own.
You're exactly right.
I love alternates for 1 or 2 games.
I love alternates for 0 games.
Will be fun to see the new ones along with all the fans in the blackout. Hopefully new versions have some grey in it.
The soccer fan in me says something like this.........Just kidding - needs some grey though.
"True role models don't expect to be thanked at the end of the day for what they do. They just do what's Right" - Kyle Maynard
Ah, the scarlet and gray bumblebee.
That looks very Adidas'esque
Was just about to post the same about the gray. I think replacing the white in those unis with gray would make them a whole lot better.

Not a fan of having alternate jerseys in the first place, but the latest Chrome version with the wide helmet stripe and green buckeye leaf stickers was badass.

OSU is not oregon, as a matter of fact OSU beat oregon's ass with their traditional red uniforms with grey helmet and grey pants...........

Beat their ass wearing traditional whites, too.
Ummm the playoff uniforms were not the standard uniform last year.
oh my bad.....oregon was throw back from 1968, but still uniforms we have wore and our core colors........anything else?
Just to be clear, I am not a fan of black uniforms or altering what our image has been for decades, but I will be chearing my ass off for the bucks weather they are wearing black, pink or purple, so if you want to keep downvoting me because I oppose the black uniforms then knock yourself out. I thought this sight was based on respecting ALL opinions.......
It's one game....ONE GAME. Hardly altering what our image is and has been. But you're allowed to have your opinion and I'm allowed to have mine
But the uniform has changed and been altered over the decades. Such a misguided sense of traditionalism. You would've hated Woody Hayes...that guy changed the uniform numerous times. He started putting wide stripes on the helmets and stickers on the helmets and names on the backs of jerseys. You know what has been Ohio State's tradition more than just wearing the exact same thing for every game? Being sharp, always looking good, always being fresh and cool to the younger crowd. Why would they wear pink or purple? Those aren't a part of their color scheme. Black is. It's on the helmet, on the jerseys, on the pants, on the logos, etc. One of the original school colors is black. Look at it this way...look at the black as the negative space of a canvas...the scarlet and gray are gonna pop off of it.
You must not get the point I was making with pink and purple........black is in our uniform but is not one of our colors. Scarlet and Grey, and any uniform alteration that still features out core colors of scarlet and grey never upsets me.
It is indeed one of our tertiary colors. So is white. What about when Woody had the team wearing a white helmet? I get the point that you were getting at with pink and purple, but it doesn't make the point valid. Pink and purple aren't and never have been a school color. Black is one of the school's colors and was one of the school's original colors when school colors were originally chosen. And the uniform is still going to FEATURE scarlet and gray. Take a look here at OSU's own branding page, where it lists scarlet, gray, white and black is their primary color palate, with scarlet and gray being the signature colors.
...also take a look at their definition of usage for scarlet and reds in general and using it against backdrops of colors:
"Physically, red focuses behind the retina, which forces the lens of your eye to become more convex to pull it forward; therefore, we perceive red areas as advancing. How scarlet is positioned in relation to other hues, however, makes a world of difference. On a black background, for example, scarlet glows and expands, while on a white background it appears more contained and crisp. Surrounded by orange and purple, scarlet is relatively lifeless."
Black and white are neutral colors that can serve as a canvas of negative space. having scarlet on top of black enhances the scarlet. Stop focusing so much that the canvas will be black and focus more on how it will make the artwork on top of the canvas - the scarlet and gray - pop out at your eyes. If you're using some other random color as your canvas, it doesn't have that effect to where it FEATURES the scarlet and gray. Black and white have that effect, where it will draw your eyes to the signature colors.
Don't tell me that you want The Ohio State University Buckeyes to be like Oregon?
I've posted about this before a few months back. Here's a little bit of insider info:

Thought these were timely as well:
I hope everyone going to the game wears scarlet &/or gray underneath a black sweatshirt/jersey/t-shirt. Best of both worlds. I will be at my bar wearing scarlet & gray.
How about those gray jerseys Tennessee was wearing over the weekend? Supposedly they "honor the Smokey Mountains", but on TV they looked more like what I see when I "clean out the smoker".
Speaking of, I tried and completely failed this weekend. So I was drinking some Maker's Mark and thought "hell, why don't I use some of these here hickory AND mesquite wood chips...at the same time?" Should have just drank my dinner instead.
Mesquite is the black jersey of smoking/cooking woods. All hype, no substance.
I liked those Gray Unis. I'm all for an all-gray uniform next year as the alternate.

I think it'll be cool to see for one game a year. As long as we don't go too far out there with futuristic designs - they did really well with this year's black alternates, so I can't see Nike trying to turn us in the the next Oregon.
"Because we couldn't go for three"
here ya go an alt for next year
Really, really dumb looking
I don't feel like this is a new move for OSU - I wanna say I've seen alternate uniforms for the last several years, and sometimes they've worn them more than once. Heck, technically they've already worn alternate uniforms twice this year by wearing what they wore for the playoffs.
In case you're curious, it's Mr. Spray
This is what I was thinking. We've been using an alternate uniform at least once a year now since around 2008 or 2009 when we started changing them for The Game. Not really news, in my opinion.
...darn kids... Hello OSU...oh wait...
I hate the offseason.
I want some more throwbacks like they used to have
definitely agree with this post^^^
the throwbacks are just plain sharp and pay homage to the teams of yesteryear!!
These two are my personal favs:
As I recall, these worked out pretty well for us too...
I'm with you. I like throwbacks as alternates once a year. Those white ones were just beyond fantastic.
I thought those versions were the best as well. I did not, however, like this one (looks like pajamas):
Only thing is when Gene Smith or some refer to these alternates as throwbacks. I realize the ones were supposed to honor the 54 champs but those were far from what the unis looked like in 54. Ohio State wore red jerseys all year long and had gray helmets with no numbers on. They only wore white vs USC in the Rose Bowl and that uni was sweet.
The ones honoring the 61 team were not accurate but at least they tried some on that one. It was my 2nd favorite since the scarlet and gray looked good together. 42 was by far the closest.
And yes the playoff unis should be permanent. It is interesting to hear Meyer and Smith talk about who makes decisions. Urban acts like he does not do much for picking game day unis. So I wonder who makes the call on wearing the Earle style and not the traditional gray sleeves?
These are the 61 home unis. So they came sorta close
So much for the "tradition" argument, ehh?
Like these from 1897! Link.
Pray for potatoes with a hoe in your hand.
I think throwback haircuts are in order. Specifically, the guy standing on the far right. That would be a good look for Urbs.
What were the school's colors back in 1897? Brown & browner??
looks like black & white to me...
I think our original colors were actually orange & black, like Princeton's.
The school colors were never black and orange. It was a recommendation that never saw the light of day once someone reminded the committee in charge of such things that Princeton wore those colors already.
Thanks for the info, Jeeves!
Had to look this up:
The Ohio State school colors of scarlet and gray were chosen by a committee of three students (Curtis C. Howard, Harwood R. Pool, and Alice Townshend) prior to the school's first graduation ceremony in 1878. The committee's original recommendation was to be orange and black. The committee soon discovered that Princeton already used the colors, however, and changed their recommendation. For this reason some references claim that Ohio State's original school colors were orange and black. This claim is not quite accurate, in that the committee never filed the original report with that recommendation.
I wouldn't mind the black jersey with the gray helmet and gray pants but I am an old guy who detests change, lol.
Does anyone else hear a resemblance to Gene Smiths voice and Dr. Ben Carson? haha i could see them having temperament wars, which one could say something the calmest and most serious WINS

"Smith added at his press conference that Nike originally approached Ohio State about black jerseys two years ago, so next year's are probably already in the works."
I guess saying no to Nike was not an option. In my opinion, wearing all black uniforms puts us in the same league as teams like Cincinnati, Louisville and countless other second and third tier schools that are desperate for attention.
TBF, Smith did tell Nike "no" on some aspects:

I don't understand why the uniforms create so much controversy. The players are the ones wearing them on national television, not us.
In a word, tradition.
"Hit them hard and see how they fall"
That's a false narrative just like the "Noon kickoff for The Game".
Not only have the uniforms changed every couple years, but if you wanted "tradition" we'd be seeing those striped ensembles from the 1890s shown above.
Tradition should not be confused with preference against changing from something you like.
They should ban the forward pass, loud speakers at games and even lights for night games.
I believe "scarlet & gray" are considered the traditional school colors. I neither expressed my preference nor chose the original school colors. Just responding to the previous comment wondering as to why uniforms were creating a "controversy".
Spot on NorCal. Too bad I can give you only 1 UV.
Some traditionalists, beyond the school color's issue, are bothered by the appearance that an outside entity, Nike, has been driving this process, changing the color of our uniform beyond their traditional boundaries, for the sake, it is not unreasonable to assume, of expanded clothing and accessory sales. After all, everyone seems to admit that the process was initiated by Nike, not the university.

I presume they will illuminate the crowd for the game, but that pitch-black crowd is a very cool look IMO.

It remains to be seen if the black jerseys will become an alternate jersey staple like Ohio State's "chrome" alternates
Let's see the result of Saturday night's game first. The Chromes have served us pretty well, if I recall correctly ('14 vs. Va Tech notwithstanding).
Cronimi - I would say the chrome didn't serve us well. iirc we played PSU and Michigan way closer than we should have and we lost to VTU.
The 2010 scarlet jerseys and gray pants were the best.
The only good thing about The Game is winning it - Urban Meyer
I'm not a fan of the forward pass or face mask!!! This game is built on traditions!
I'm cool with alternates. Can we all agree the playoff jerseys were pretty much perfect? Can we get more of those?
Nope. Not a fan of the inconsistent arm stripes and not sure why anyone would. But alas, opinions....
The down vote is a mighty tool. Use it on idiots, not differing opinions.
I'm with you. Though my preference is with the white and grey stipes, it does looks off when paired with the different stripes on the pants and helmet. Mish mashed.
I'm still hoping for a predominately gray uniform similar to the basketball grays.
I love the gray stripe jerseys that they wore in the playoffs and the first two games this season, but I do like seeing a new alternate uniform every year. The players love it, the recruits love it, why not embrace it for one or two games a season!?
The players loving it is not a fact. When players are ask the are "eh" It's a fan thing.
No one wants to face the facts that this is just a way to get people to buy more replica jerseys and has nothing to do with recruiting.
Absolutely correct, Jeeves. Show me the money, Nike.
I have this jersey and absolutely love how it looks. They really should consider these as the new normal.
I agree. The two playoff uniforms should be our regular uniforms. Our best seasons have been when wearing those traditional bold shoulder stripes(68/02/14) The default uniforms stripes we have had since 2006 have been a bad omen. Back to back title losses, the 80's, I could go on.
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.
The demographics are changing, huh? Are the "demographics" you're catering to buying your 80.00 - 150.00 game tickets? Are the "demographics" to whom you're pandering members of the Buckeye or Presidents Club? I'll bet that they aren't. Go ahead and play that crappy "rap music" in the stadium, go ahead and charge stupid money for a bottle of water, hell, go ahead and paint your end zones red and white... but leave the damn uniforms, especially the helmets, alone.
When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's
New traditions have to start some time. I bet the cranky old people in the 50s were complaining that Hang on Sloopy was being played every game #damnrocknroll
It'd be a lot of fun to have one game a year be a black out.
Half the people bitching are younger and some of the older are for it. SO play nice
Gray out would look cooler and more original and would use one of the school's 2 main colors.
Hang on Sloopy wasn't debuted for the sole purpose of selling new T-shirts.
I like the idea of picking one game a year to wear alternate uniforms (and I'm an old guy). I understand the position of those who think we should try to stick with our primary school colors, however.
Scarlet is pretty much scarlet - but we have some leeway with the shade of gray we use. I would have preferred some sort of a dark gray variation.
Lots of teams wear black uniforms. Dark gray would have set us apart - and still looked bad-ass - while still falling within our primary school colors -
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement. - Will Rogers
I'm with you Phi.
Watching the Wolverine @ Maryland game with my Dad two weeks ago, we noted that the visitors were in basic white uniforms and the home team was in all black. Growing up, all the teams playing on TV were in "black & white." So, we have progressed all the way from watching teams wearing their colors on B&W TV to now watching teams with uniforms absent of color - on color TV.
Many years ago (in Dayton) there was an AM/FM combo radio station that played rock music on their AM side (that could only broadcast in mono at the time) - and did a talk format on the FM side (which was of course broadcasting in stereo).
Your comment reminded me of that -
i can't agree more i have no problem with alts just do them in scarlet and gray leave the black to trim
the other thing is last year fans and players of Ohio State made it a point to tell state penn they are NOT rivals now this year they are doing shit that screams rival
Interesting comment, Doghouse. Part of me really likes the idea of the "black-out" - but another part of me doesn't like the idea of us mimicking their "white-out".
I would like to see a dark gray uniform someday - but that could be for any home game -
WHY ? ? ?
M O N E Y
I'm pretty old school but bye and large I've liked the alternates. I would love to see them do what the Hockey Team did and have a military alternate uniform with service came design the numbers outlined in gray. Instead of names we could have Navy/Marines/Army/Coast Guard/Air Force as nameplates.
Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle and mutilate.

I think those helmets with the black unis would look pretty damn good!
Demographics are not changing. Market opportunities are opening and shame is declining.
I don't mind the alternate jerseys. Especially black. However, I wouldn't mind seeing a version of the black unis with our gray helmet. I think that could be a good look.
"Nike approached Ohio State 2 years ago."
Who was that guy on here a while back bull crapping us into believing that Nike didn't approach OSU? The guy who said he had been into that secret room or whatever LOL @ that guy.
I went to the RU-MSU game Sat. night. Hung out before the gane at an RU bar and chatted with some Sparty fans. I was bemoaning how the Buckeyes hadn't looked as sharp as expectations would have them. He said " (paraphrasing here) "tOSU are the defending NC's, the #1 team in the co. with one of, if not the best coach on CFB. With all due respect, stop complaining, it's really annoying"
Uniforms? I agree with Sparty
Buckeye born and bred, Buckeye till I'm dead
The Diamond Quest jerseys we wore for the National Title game was based of the 1968 National Championship jersey. People forget that the 1993 Buckeyes wore that jersey to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 1968 National title. So basically the Buckeyes started wearing alternates before it became a trend with Nike or anyone else.................
Love the playoff uni's, agree with many that say they should be the standard every game attire.
Love the chrome alternates we've been trotting out periodically.
Like the idea of the black uni's but not in love with the execution, at least from the pictures so far. Maybe I'll like them after actually seeing them in action. There were plenty of mockups and concepts I would have liked better than the final designs, but is it Saturday yet?
Anyone else think Black Saturday is coming at a perfect time for the progression of this season? We've kinda been sleepwalking with finally signs of waking up last week. All the hype and buildup that's been put on the dark night in the shoe should have the team soooo fired up! PSU better hope that they don't get beat worse than the last time they were in town.
I'd be curious to see what Archie and the other former players said about the jerseys? I like them and have been saying for a few years now how it would be cool to have an alternate every year for one game.
Just please, please, please don't do anything that looks like this -

Should be fun seeing the Bearcats Buckeyes out there against Penn State.....
Saban on a cart eating cold pizza
The chrome helmets hung on for several seasons. I hope OSU follows MSU's lead and gives the players the black helmet as a bowl present this season. That way the black uniform is done. I'm OK with an alternate that looks like Ohio State. Maybe the 60's vertical shoulder stripe.
Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
Pain of Discipline
Pain of Regret
Take Your Pick
Fine, whatever. Please just wear them against someone like Minnesota or NIU, not Michigan or PSU.
Nike approached OSU which tells me this was a scheme to sell more replica jerseys and not a desire by Ohio State to reward players or excite recruits. I find the attitude that players may care that much about wearing BFBS unis condescending towards our student athletes. However, if there is to be another BFBS uni in the future I hope Nike shows OSU the respect of spending more than an hour of a student design intern's time on the design. These are pretty darn pedestrian.
I'm with you, Jeeves.
These are the ugliest alternates we have ever worn, and not just because they are black. They just look cheap and like what Oregon State wears... Is this some sort of Nike punishment for ruining your Ducks season again? These fall just a tad behind the uniforms we wore when beating Wisconsin on Braxton's bomb. Those were hideous. I like the other pro combat throwback uniforms as I feel like they have more meaning and an overall cleaner look.
'Fire Gene Smith. Easy enough. Oh wait, to hell with "Scarlet and Gray". We don't need it.
I don't mind alternates as long as they look good and incorporate scarlet and gray. I think black unis, in principle, are pretty cliche, though doing them once isn't a bad thing.
Class of 2010.
The black jerseys are pretty sick, it's the all-black I'm not fond of, particularly the helmets. The white throwbacks from the game against TTUN in '09 were my fav personally, still rocking the Boom Herron #1 in my closet!
I don't think "demographics" means what he thinks it means. Or, likely, he's just saying something that is full of shit because he thinks we're stupid. Alternate uniforms are part of Nike's business model so that they can sell more shirts to a demographic that already owns a drawer full of t-shirts. Why would that customer buy a new $50 t-shirt unless it was radically different and worn by the players?
That's not a shifting demographic...that's a, "hey! we figured out a way to squeeze a few more dollars out of these sap fans we have. All we have to do is advertise a new shirt by having the free labor wear them on the field. School colors be damned."
I can't upvote this enough. Right on the MONEY. Pun intended.
It's not free labor to Nike when they pay millions upon millions of dollars to supply them.
