Great story.  I love getting to hear what great people the Buckeyes are. Urban learned a lot from his mistakes at Florida and it will lead to his sustained success in Columbus.  It is nice to be able to be proud of the team not just for its success, but for the quality of the guys who make up the team.

Great writing job, Tim! Excellent details and nice balancing of the quotes from Tyquan's Mom, coach and other players. This kind of article is harder to write but well worth the effort.

And as for Tyquan, it was nice to see him go from being the last Dlinemen listed to being in the top four. Keep up the good work, Tyquan.

Thank you for sharing Tyquan's story with us. And what a solid, loving family that young man has back home. Hopefully he has another great performance Saturday while they are in attendance.

Run_Fido_Run's picture

What a superb article, Tim! My eyes got a bit misty reading it. I have been very impressed by Tyquan's play so far this year and now I am doubly impressed by what an outstanding young man he is.

Ohio State will stroll out onto the field Saturday night against the Nittany Lions in all black uniforms. The crowd, too, will be dressed head-to-toe in black.

And somewhere in that crowd will be Lewis’ mother and three younger brothers. It will be their first opportunity to see Tyquan start a game in front of the home crowd.

Buckeyes fans are grateful to Tyquan's family for letting Ohio State borrow him for a few years. This Saturday, when they enter the 'Shoe and witness the energy, pageantry, tradition, colors, raw power of the place, etc., Tyquan's mom and brothers might even have a "Wow! I get why this place appealed to him" moment. Hopefully, Tyquan will have a huge game and his family will have a blast in the stadium.

HS
cinserious's picture

I can only imagine the pride his mom will feel when Tyquon makes a big play and a fan near her says "Who's that?" And another fan says "That's Tyquon Lewis. He's from North Carolina."

I spent many years in eastern NC while on active duty in the Corps and stayed there for a few years after retirement. While it's not at the level of Ohio HS football, there is a lot of talented football players there and a handful of HS football programs within a close proximity to East Carolina University. I've been through Tarboro and it's a very small town. It really is amazing that Urban Meyer has such a reach with his recruiting and I'm glad he got this young man because he's starting to become my next favorite player.

This story had me tearing up, I love how they all mean the world to each other and some people don't get it.  Having a family is the most beautiful thing one can be blessed with and I'm glad the Lewis family love each other to pieces.  It hits home because my brother and I grew up in a broken home with a single mother and I pray she will wake up and smell the coffee one day.  All I can do is love my kids to the best of my ability.  Go home and give your kids a big hug and kiss tonight, one day we won't be on this earth anymore.

HS
ScarletandGREAT's picture

These are my favorite reads. Better than the Xs and Os, I love reading about what phenomenal young men we have on our team. The word "role model" gets thrown around way too much in sports in my humble opinion. As a mom, I want my kids to look up to real people. Often it seems that sports figures lack that humanity. They may be freaks of nature on the football field, but who are they off it? Are they good brothers? Sons? Boyfriends? Husbands? Fathers? Do they support their community? Are they humble? Do they have a good heart? Do they give back? Do they appreciate the privilege their talent allows them? Do they put in the work when things get tough or do they throw in the towel? Do they buy in to the hype about who they are, or do they know what really matters at the end of the day are the things that will never appear on a stat sheet? Those are the qualities I want my boys to respect. Don't get me wrong, we love to watch Zeke run through defenses and watch Braxton put video game moves on people. But I make sure to tell my boys about the positive things they do outside of football as well. Joshua Perry gets some of the biggest cheers in our house when he makes a tackle not just because he is a defensive starter, captain, and athletic beast but because he's brave and he speaks out for childhood cancer, a cause near and dear to many of my friends. As this article illustrates, it's the things off the field that make Tyquan Lewis a superhero to those who know him. He was their Superman long before he was a defensive starter for The Ohio State University, and he will be their Superman long after his playing days are through. That's a true role model.
