You can just see and feel the love and unity these players have for one another. I think that's why we'll continue to be great as love as UFM is around. MACTE VIRTUTE

HS
Buck68's picture

I suspect Ramzy did this on purpose...every detail.  ;-{)}

One basic distinction in the multitudes of writings on this topic is between Why men fight and How men fight.  The Why includes relationship behaviors and motivations.  The How includes methodologies which conceptually apply principles of war [human conflict] and tactics.

===

Apolitical, amoral models which are tools within which to discuss this topic include:

1] Johari Window [how an individual learns about himself AND/or how individuals/groups relate] with respect to accuracy, perceptions, and cooperation.  [classic application The Red-Black Game].

2] Hersey-Blanchard Situational Leadership Model:  leadership guidance to achieve a defined objective by continual assessing of group willingness and ability with respect to tasks [what to do] and relationships [why important to mission and how people/mission elements fit together].

3-Bloom's Taxonomy et seq:  Matrix of definitons for Levels of learning/doing in 3 Dimensions:  Affective [Emotional] Domain, Cognitive [rational] domain, and Skills.

One interesting aspect is how these models have 'evolved' 1950s-present by the need to 'publish or perish', 'be an expert', and/or 'prove my point' vs advance common learning tools.  As a result, we have regressed such that the originals are... unrecognizable even by those charged with 'teaching' them.  Thus "education" becomes "indoctrination".

Speaking of Military and a Buckeye fan, we lost one great guy. SFC Corey Hood. He was a Cincinattian but Buckeye fan none the less. He was part of the U.S. Army Golden Knights team and was doing a joint jump with some Navy folks at the Chicago air show. The smoke maneuver where they spin in a circle and break away from eachother went wrong and they collided. He was found in critical condition after hitting the side of a building and landing. They tried to save him but they couldn't. I went to military training just a few years ago with him. Damn this sucks. Second man I know that was a Buckeye fan dying from either the job or during our time in the box.

Interesting article. If the Buckeyes can be half as dominant as the Russian were at Hockey, we will be witnessing the greatest stretch of football in the history of college football. I don't think it's possible because the Russians had absolute control of who played on the national team. College football teams turn over complete rosters every 4 years. The Russians had the best players as long as they were the best. Even though the USA stopped their absolute dominance in 1960 and 1980, the Canadians were the only real competition. Urban must out recruit against at least a dozen other elite coaches and programs for the best talent.

I wonder how many Stanley cups the Russians would have won if they had been competing in the NHL.

HS

They couldn't play without each other. Some did play in the NHL they couldn't really hack it because it wasn't the system or style they were groomed to play in from birth. But I do think Detroit did win a cup with an all Russian line that when put together did magical things with the puck.

In light of the brief bit of caterwauling brought to our attention by Oregon fans, I find this line in an entire piece full of great lines to be the most satisfying. There is nothing wrong with greatness, there is no fun in humility. If you are better than someone go ahead and show it. If you are 42 points better than a team, be 42 points better than them. Just awesome work.

I loved Tress, but he would let off of opponents in the second half if he had a solid lead.  This teaches the players to relax later in games and makes comebacks less likely.

Urban may sub in backups but the team still goes 100% at opponents for 4 quarters.

I also wonder if in a weird way that attitude affects games that aren't out of hand. What I love about Meyer, his staff, and his team's is that they are always on and treat every play like its the most important one of the game. That's not to say JT's guys took plays off-not at all but if you are in the mindset of constantly attacking and 'go' is the only speed you know, it makes you stay awake the entire 60 minutes of every game. I'm trying to think of a way to word what I'm thinking without it being a dig at Tressel because the man was a phenomenal coach but there is a different attitude on Meyer's teams that always has them amped up.

I really thought 2006 was a fluke and that Ohio State had the best coach in the nation. It is very clear to me now that Urban Meyer was simply more evolved than JT. I don't mean this as a dig against Tressel because the record speaks for itself but Meyer seems to know things very few coaches either take the time to learn or have the capacity to understand.

Proudly dispensing unbridled arrogance since 1983.

HS
novabuckeye's picture

Yes, Ramzy said it well, it's more than Xs and Os, it's about building team chemistry first and foremost, and bringing in the kind of kids (and families) that will buy whole hog into that philosophy.

HS
ibuck's picture

While there are some similarities in the way Meyer and Tressel ran their program, I think Tressel's sense of loyalty overrode some critical analysis and action. Meyer got an underperforming coach to move on, while Jim let at least one stay on.

Ramzy's article discusses the significance of some intangible human relationships in group efforts toward a given mission.

thoughts on Brewstermillions significant phrases:

1-for the imperfect person, a suggested "spectrum of knowing":

know it all [surely, honest, trust me] ......... seems to know some things ..... more than .... less than .....  know 1 thing - that i don't know.

2-do "records speak for themselves" .... or do people speak?  What records keep the knower from telling the lesser what the numbers mean?   ;-{)}

3-"simply more evolved"?   Does this mean literally what the words suggest?  I.E. that there is this straight line with a given slope called "more" up which we "simply" "evolve"?  If so, then how do I [and not people who disagree with Me] become this "very few"?   Humbly, of course.  ;-{)}

4-Across the spectrums of human humility to arrogance, from few to many:  seeing is believing...but appearances can be deceiving.  Picture a plumb line... that snags itself on various imperfections on its way 'straight' down.  Now use it to try to build a building we'll label Progress that is ...straight & square.  Such are the measurements of the "traditions of men", "evolution" included.

"It's easy.  All you need is love"  -  John Lennon

Really, it's not that 'easy' because it requires so much attention to the smallest detail - while never taking his eye off the big picture.  I've said this before - so please bear with me.  Urban Meyer has managed to create a program that embodies his philosophy from top to bottom.  I think he'd be the first to admit, that even though he's the one who hired them, he's also had some good fortune in how well his assistants have adapted to his way of doing things.

Some Florida players were quoted in the piece - but I think he's taken it to another level since those days.  UFM has mentioned that he picked up some things from other coaches during his year as a broadcaster.  I remember him singling out Chip Kelly, specifically.

The parallels to the Soviet hockey team were certainly interesting.  Particularly, the focus on players who don't have the ball. etc.  Although some of that is more indemic to the nature of football than it is to hockey to begin with.  I remember discussions on the subject from back in the stone age when I was playing - but it's still a valid point.

We should try to remain mindful of the fact that UFM was one of the innovators of the "spread to run power" philosophy.  Right here at 11W, you'll sometimes read fan's ideas for new offensive formations and personnel that would require an abrupt shift from that philosophy.

For example, Nick Vannett, Michael Thomas and Ezekiel Elliott will remain critical components of the offense this season, no matter how many good quarerbacks we have on the roster.  Thomas and the other wide receivers to "spread".  Zeke and/or the qb to "run".  And Nick to add "power"

Another interesting parallel between Urban and the Soviet coach is synthesis.

The Soviet coach merged soccer tactics into hockey.

Urban merged spread tactics with Midwestern smash mouth football.

I've always thought soccer and hockey were pretty much the same thing. Except for the weather it's played in...

This is funny because I was watching the Zeke E60 again and was thinking, the buckeyes run last year seems oddly familiar with the US hockey team in 80. Alabama was the heavily favored Soviets and OSU was the upcoming, young team that nobody felt belonged in the game. Plus it being a semi-final match.

but I will go with Ramzy's overall comparison to how the Soviet team was built to our beloved buckeyes.

I saw a UFO once.......it told me to have a goodyear!

Ramzy, a great article, truly. Very well done.

This isn't the old basketball-on-grass spread offense. Ohio State is forcing teams to defend the entire field and then smashing them to their core with a ruthless power running game. Its artistry, though conducted through elite talent and conditioning.

But wait, we all know that the Hairball effect will elevate the Skunk Weasels up to Ohio State's level. After all, Hairball has artistry of his own:

Bo Schembechler: Student of Woody;
Gary Moeller: Player for Woody;
Lloyd Carr & Rich Rodriguez: Owned by Tressel;
Brady Hoke: Owned by donuts;
Jim Harbaugh: Owned by Urban to the tune of 42-13.

I was literally blown away watching the 45 minute speech Urban delivered at a coaching conference in Mississippi!  He talked about he sent his staff to a leadership conference to learn how to lead and how to build trust.  It made is SOOOOOOO obvious why this team was successful, why Urban is the greatest coach of this era (and perhaps of all time when it is said and done), how he is such a masterful recruiter, and why, given OSU's brand and powerhouse status, he will bring home many more championships.  If you haven't seen it - you need to!

It was a Ramzy article that first brought me to this site; it was a Ramzy article that got me to become a part of this community.

This might be my favorite Ramzy article of them all, though.

Am I allowed to drop political #hottakes since Ramzey called the USSR a great ~anything~?

Good article, but wrapped in soviet pride makes my American head swim a little bit.

I like it....i dont...i like it....i dont.....where's Miracle??

Excellent article!

I come to this site with trepidation every day, hoping that I don't see some injury report or suspension announcement.  It's happening everywhere else, and because we've had such a great off season, my fear is that it may catch up with us.

Yay!  One more day in which it hasn't!

Just like Colonel Joshua Chamberlain's ending to his speech to his Union soldiers at the Battle of Gettysburg, "In the end, we are fighting for each other". Meyer instilled that at UF, but he further evolved that mentality with his team to an even higher level in Columbus, and Urban saw that in Woody as to how he cared so much for his team of young Buckeye soldiers and beloved State of Ohio. I really believe our coach wants to be up there with Woody, leaving a long history and championships for our Buckeye Nation. No NFL coaching offer can sway him from us. He's no Nick Satan.    O-H!

Urban just couldn't say 9 units strong and expect his players to believe. What he had to reference is what happens when there is not 9 units strong, is when his teams lost 3 out of 4 games. His only three loses at Ohio State. Lost to Michigan State which Urban believes kept them out of the BCS Title game. Then lost to Clemson in their bowl game that year, then after beating Nave they lost to VaTech. He was able to SHOW his players on film what happens when not all 9 units play up to their capabilities. NOW THEY BELIEVE in 9 units strong.

Tasarov would preach to his players they needed to treat each teammate like the love of your life. He believed that love was the strongest emotion to fuel a team; far stronger than hate - and that if his team truly loved itself it would be incredibly difficult for any other team to break it.

so Meyer and Tasarov were Jedi?

As a lifelong Red Wings fan, I witnessed some amazing Russian hockey. For those that aren't familiar, the early-mid nineties Red Wings featured a line completely made up of Russian legends called The Russian Five. Their style was unlike anything the NHL had ever seen. There's nothing like it today.

Ramzy, there is no way 11W can be paying you enough for your work. I don't remember a single piece you have written that hasn't been fantastic. I'm not sure if coach Meyer reads 11W but if he does I'm sure he would say you write how Evan Spencer Plays!!!

That's how winners play. We convince the other guy he's making all the right moves.
