Should be an excellent chess match leading into the opening minutes of the VT game.

Bud Foster and the Hokies' D know they're not facing the same offense they did last year. The fact that they don't know which quarterback they're facing is an absolute advantage - Urban holds a stronger attack without revealing his hand (arm).

I love it - this off-season, this QB race is one of the ages...and then the Buckeyes get to go out and defend their title.

No matter who ends up winning the Buckeye Derby, we're going to win a ton of games and contend for the title. I just hope people are reasonable enough to not start calling for heads when the starter throws his first pick, or has his first bad day. Do I think that will happen however, no. 1) because MOST (I realize there are some out there that are reasonable) of the media are a bunch of rabid jekylls just looking to break the story first. 2) because there are some fans out there that, let's be honest, don't know the game very well and think that whoever wins the starting spot will be perfect.

HS

Seriously, this is awesome, VT not knowing who will start and how many will play during the course of the game.

My personal preference for starter is JT, since he had to suffer the loss last year,  he could possibly be the most motivated of the three.

Then, I hope all three play.

Although it may be academic, since Zeke is on schedule to have about a 260 yard day.  He has set a personal best in three straight games, and I'd love to see that continue!

I like that Va Tech site "The Key Play" but if you read their latest article they basically say that OSU was able to win the rest of their games after losing to the Hokies only because those defenses played to OSU's strengths. They specifically key on MSU and Alabama.

Those Hokies seem pretty confident for a team that followed up that OSU victory by losing to East Carolina and Georgia Tech! I hope all 3 of our QB's go wild on them, at the same time.

HS

They've obviously earned confidence but it's interesting that a lot of them are acting as if their defense is the lone kyrptonite in the NCAA that can stop the Buckeyes; as if the Bucks are unable to come up with any wrinkles of their own.

I read The Key Play fairly often too, Shookster.  They're always very quick to point out how hard they were hit by injuries last season.  They claim that accounts for their collapse after our game.

They may have a point.  If you count their guys coming back from injuries, they have about as many significant players returning as we do.

Their defense should be extremely good this season.  I think our defense should be able to just about completely shut their offense down, however -

Funny that we had three new guys on the DL as well as new linebackers against your slobs last year. One could argue that should have been a Mexican standoff in the trenches and out wide then. Statistically Brewer's (he had only arrived on campus in that summer) average that night against you guys was exactly the same as his rating for the entire year. While hard to assess without insider information, the beating your guys gave him likely affected him the rest of the year. At least four guys got injury hardship waivers last year which means they went out early in the season after our game. One of them, the DB who got burned, should not have been playing against you as he had a stress fracture that was not healed. The two tailbacks who scored against you both tore ACL's later in the year and that hurt as our third best option at the time was limited while recovering from a broken leg and himself went down with a broken clavicle. One of our linebackers who gave you fits missed several games and while a stud athlete took over for him, he hurt us at times because of his freshman overaggressiveness. There was more but that was then, and we just simply had some games and moments with lapses that defy explanation.

Yep, you missed two field goals while we missed one. Yep, you had three interceptions and we had some too. Yep, you got a fumble recovery way down close. Did we get one? I think the point is that there are a lot of excuses that could be made by both sides. The only one that counts is that one team scored more than the other in a fairly contested game. One of those teams went on to have a super stellar year and deservedly take the crown. The other fell apart.

This year is this year and I think there will be some surprises.

Glad to have a Hokie join the discussion.

I think it'll be a tremendous match-up between the Hokie defense and the Buckeye offense.  I don't believe it's unrealistic to think both units could finish within the top ten (or even five) in the nation.

I can't say that about the VT offense, though.  In the national championship game, our defense held a very high-powered Oregon offense, led by a Heisman trophy winning quarterback, to 20 points.  Even the most starry-eyed Hokie fan couldn't possibly think their offense compares favorably to the Ducks.

If you count our (then) freshman 5-star linebacker who was splitting reps with a senior, we'll be returning 8 players from that defense.  We should be even quicker at WDE, by the way.

Unlike last season, the Buckeyes will not be learning a new defense.  And unlike last season, our defensive coordinators will also have all summer to prepare for the VT offense.  Remember, we had to practice for an unconventional Navy offense in our opener last year - while VT warmed up on a cupcake.

This time, Bud Foster will not be the only defensive mind with all of fall camp to prepare for the opening game.  Yes - after what he did with our pass defense last year, I am definitely putting Chris Ash in the "defensive mind" category.

To me, that's the difference in this year's match-up.  Viginia Tech will have an elite defense.  Ohio State will have an elite offense and an elite defense.  Both head coaches notoriously focus on special teams, so I'm predicting that will be a wash -

I get East Carolina, but Georgia Tech?  The were 10-2 last year and finished with a #11 ranking.  Wins over ranked Clemson & UGA, as well as a complete dismantling of Miss St in the Orange Bowl.  They only lost to FSU by 2 in the ACC CCG.  Not to mention, Va Tech only lost to the Yellow Jackets by a field goal.

Maybe you mistyped Wake Forrest as Georgia Tech?

HS
buckeye phi's picture

In my opinion, it's unrealistic to think that Bud Foster isn't going to prepare for us to run "special packages" with whoever is not named as the starter - whether we make an announcement or not.  Urbz has famously used that strategy in the past.  It doesn't really matter if we actually do it.  Foster will prepare for it.

As Michael points out in the article, the Hokies' prep for Braxton would not be much different than their prep would be for JT, anyway.  And even if Cardale isn't the named starter, Foster is certain to put in some practice reps with him in mind.

Besides, those VT corners are going to be in man coverage most of the game to begin with.  Fuller and Facyson are both excellent corners.  Their safeties should be decent, too.  They probably wouldn't need too many reminders to stay with their men deep - especially, if Cardale's playing.

Bottom line is - we could end up spending more time and energy trying to keep everything hush-hush than it'd be worth considering how little it might actually affect Fosters strategy -

Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement. - Will Rogers

HS
Cooper's picture

I feel more comfortable with Braxton at QB against Virginia Tech. Even though I want him to be the full-time starter, I'm not sure how well the shoulder will hold up throughout the season. I just get a feeling he'd be the best one to lead us against whatever new innovation Foster will try to throw at the Bucks. I won't be mad in the slightest if either J.T. or Dale starts though, they're all Buckeyes.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

HS
NuttyBuckeye's picture

Cooper, I tend to agree with you.  I think Miller is the more dangerous, explosive QB.  My only concern with him is that the last time he started, he tended to keep the ball too much and make plays himself.  That may have been due to our WR situation and the lack of a big-time playmaker.  That should not be the case this year.  We are loaded there, and I am hoping that means less of Miller trying to win the game or make plays on his own.  Braxton could be a very special QB given talent to throw to, as this should either allow a WR to roam free as the defense tries to key on Braxton and his runs, or free up more lanes for Braxton to run, with the defense trying to cover the receivers.  It's a pick your poison type of situation.

What's round on the ends and high in the middle? Tell me if you know!

HS
BuckeyeSouth's picture

I think the 1 thing that's easy to overlook when it comes to Braxton is he watched a whole season of how the Buckeye offense was designed to operate and got to see the benefit of being a distributor.  Because he's such an athletic freak it was easy for him to rely on his superior athleticism when plays began to break down rather than holding out for a later read in his progression.  If you recall there was a lot of talk about Braxton taking "mental reps" all last season and I think that was designed specifically to get Braxton to see the offense through a different lens.  If he's completely healthy for fall camp I think he needs to be named the starter and not play coy with who the QB will be on opening day night.  I think we'll see a transformed Braxton Miller who has learned to use the weapons around him but still have the insane athletic ability to fall back on as a very last resort.

I agee. They do have to point at something, but what if they had played Cardale a little more honest? How many yards would Zeke have gone for then? He torched their assess when they were playing run and aggressively. It would have just been hard to watch if they would have had one less in the box most of the night. I know I should be careful about what I wish for, but I hope we get Bama again sometime soon and put a fork in em. That victory was the sweetest win in Buckeye history IMO.

The only question in my mind right now, is what the hell did Jones say to get that look from Barret and that laugh from Miller.

That picture (and every other photo of the 'three-headed, Buckeye, QBGeddon, fire-breathing dragon' I've seen) tells me everything I need to know.  The rest of the world wants to see them eat each other in some kind of Hunger Games, winner-take-all battle for the starting position.  These guys, however, appear to have other designs.  To me, they look like men who have found their tribe, and they will do anything to support the guy next to them and take joy and pride in seeing their brother succeed.  Team wins over individual glory.

I've heard this a lot and while it's not a bad idea it's not what will happen. If you've watched urban talk about the QBs the last few years he has been extremely straight forward in saying that Braxton was the starter out of respect to him, even when Kenny was playing great. I have no reason to think that he would do anything different this year. Trying to keep a secret that would only give you an advantage for one game is not only incredibly hard to do with the media but is also limited in how much it realistically helps you. Meyers offense is his offense, you have to prepare for mostly the same plays no matter who is in. He will give respect to the senior Braxton after he wins the battle in camp.

TRUTH on the last sentence. Urban has said MANY times how much he likes and respects Braxton and says his competitive nature is 2nd to none. AND he has reiterated that he has never seen a more perfect QB for his offense.. If Braxton's arm is just as strong as it was before the surgery, there is no reason to think that Braxton won't be the starter.

HS
Youngbuck85's picture

True it is not a given, but like I said he will earn it in camp. Most dangerous option and most experienced player. Plus if he's the starter there's no locker room divide. The whole team would get behind seeing their veteran leader get the start.... Not so simple if JT or dale starts

I prefer to think that the decision will be made a couple of weeks before the first game. Think about. This is an abnormal preseason practice situation. Ohio State has 3 QBs worhty of the starting position. Thus all 3 must be given equal number of reps to be fair to the 3 QB's. Thus none of the 3 will be getting the customary majority of the reps in practices. So a decision must be made a couple of weeks before the first game so the QB who wins the competition can then get the vast majority of reps for 2 weeks to be prepared for the HUGE VaTech game.

AND Urban IS NOT the kind of coach or person who would keep the QB who won the job a secret. Thus having to keep all press and the public away from practices and make his team swear to secrecy and lie about who is the #1 QB.

I'm all for trickery, even playing multiple QBs in the same game.

However I think there's too much collective attention being placed on our offense vs. VT's defense - we will score on them. We dropped 21 on them even with not anticipating the bear coverage.

The bigger issue last year was that we let a mediocre VT team drop 35 points on us. We need to dominate them with our defense, play great field position and limit turnovers.

Someone in a sweater vest might agree.

I think 7 of those points were on a pick 6 but still, I agree. Va Tech was 9 of 17 on third down and in all 4 of their red zone chances, they came away with TDs. Neither of those things can happen again. Michael Brewer isn't that good and the Buckeye D needs to reinforce that.

Only thing that concerns me is the game is in Blacksburg and once again, Va Tech will have all offseason to prepare. They will have the postseason tapes picked apart.

Bucks win big if Bosa & Co. do what they're supposed to do and the O-line/Zeke does what its supposed to do.

Both defenses im sure will be ready to play. last Sept we left 2 TD's and 2 field goals on the table, Zeke wasnt the hero in the half shirt yet but If our Oline picks up from where they left off last year i cant see tech winning this game I know both teams have kids on scholarships but our Oline is how we pound teams into submission and allow Zeke to leave cleat marks up and down the field while buying time for who eva QB is to make the throws down field

A touch of greatness how cool would that be ..

HS

I don't think there is any reason to play games with Bud.  He's a great coordinator and will be prepared for any of our guys as best as they can be, which won't be enough...  Announce Braxton the starter, if healthy and throwing good, a few weeks before the opener.

In a "everyone is healthy" situation, I like XBrax to start.  Then JT and Cardale to take the 3rd and 4th quarters if the Bucks are up by 2TDs or more, like they should be.

I don't know what Urbz is going to come up with, but whoever he picks as the starter, I think he should keep it secret and then trot out all three for the first play, but call time out just to freak everyone out.

Ok, that's probably not a good idea, but it would be hilarious.

...and Michigan still sucks.
