I'm surprised at Sparty I must say.  Not surprised at Sconnie, however.  My buddy was punched in the stands and had his OSU jersey ripped off and thrown over the side of the stadium a few years back.  That was 3 ejections right there.  Their sense of entitlement is puzzling and unfounded.  #59-0

Wiscy fans are indeed the worst.   Whether it's throwing pennies encased in marshmellows at our players or spitting on out players ... you name it.

I remember watching OSU at Wiscy in 2008.  The Wiscy fan next to me was the most insufferable drunk, aggressive, antagonistic douchebag.  I loved when Terrell Pryor killed their hopes in the last minutes.   It was priceless.

59-0 was also priceless, as it shut up the "We're as good as Ohio State" nonsense.

I'm pretty certain Urban Meyer deliberately wanted to make a statement, not just win the game convincingly -- just as when he remarked "That one was for Coop(er)" when we beat PSU 63-14 to revenge a loss from 1994 of the same score.  19 years is a long memory.

Hopefully we will make another statement in Ann WhoreBore this November.

The Hawkeye info provided is pure gold. That is an amazing display of recordkeeping, for sure. Sadly, I did the same thing mentioned in the second-to-last bullet point in the Iowa section... twice. Once at a country concert as people were trying to get into the venue (i hate country) and another on the busy streets of Southside, PA.

Lucky, no arrests for this guy!! Although a stern talking to by law enforcement, which, coincidentally, I have no recollection of.

Do the schools have information on what team the fans were supporting?  The point about rivalries bringing out the hatred is valid, but I would imagine a TTUN fan coming into the 'Shoe for the last 10-12 years hasn't been too happy with what they have to watch on the field, and would be more likely to get into an altercation with a fan of the good guys.

It's difficult to decide who "the worst" fans in the Big Ten are, but the data provided by each member institution is telling in its own way.

When it comes to the worst fans, my vote goes to Penn State

In 2005, Penn State students bombarded the Ohio State band with so many projectiles, including balloons filled with urine, that the band did not make the trip two years later.

I have been to every stadium in the B1G except Iowa, Maryland and Rutgers....and have to agree, Penn St. fans take it as far as being the worst. These are the same obnoxious types who wave terrible towels and cheer for the Steelers on Sundays. Nebraska fans, on the other hand, are so pleasant it borders on uncomfortable.

HS
CC's picture

I've been to PSU and UMD.  They aren't close.  PSU is way worse.  The UMD fans were happy to see a sold out stadium for both of the games I attended (OSU, MSU).

HS
timenchange11's picture

HEY! Don't lump Penn Staters with the Stillers! Happy Valley is way closer to Philthy than Pittsburgh. And you make it sound like waving a terrible towel around is a bad thing :D

HS
ibuck's picture

The B1G should do something about inexcusable fan behavior. PSU itself (and their more reasonable fans) need to stop it. Or the B1G should just not allow PSU-OSU games to be played in Happy Valley. No fan anywhere should suffer assault or battery, even by thrown objects.

As incentive, the B1G could advise PSU that their share of B1G revenue would be reduced (by a substantial amount) if it continues. And misguided fans guilty of such assaults should be banned from the campus and stadium for multiple years.

Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !

Anyone notice Ohio State is the only one with more arrests than ejections? Good to know its not only my small tiny town of Marietta that will arrests/give you a ticket for anything. I literally got a ticket for not using a blinker to pull out of a gas station one night! Didn't even know that was a law! So after i threw the ticket away and forgot about it, I didn't realize they suspended my liscense until I went in to renew it. Apparently you have to pay a ticket within 30 days or your license gets suspended. Anyway, I also once almost got a ticket for flipping my ashes on the ground when I used to smoke. The officer said it was littering. I was leaving a bar and asked him how he was going to bag up the evidence when it was blowing down the street? He didn't like that answer at all! But after a verbal lashing he let me be.

Love Marietta. Great small town. Visited many times over the years. Many relatives from there. Grandfather and grandmother buried there. Lot of history and tradition for a small town. Murphys used to live on Front St. back in the days when the Ohio would flood every spring. Some fun. Probably doesn't do that now. Uncle was in the Fire Dept. and once caught a 65 lb catfish in the Ohio down in front of the house.

HS

That was my first thought too.  18? That was like one quarter of their actual attendance last year.  But if I remember right, they did find that they were counting tickets given away to sponsors and stuff and not actually counting who goes through the gate.  So in order to keep their "record" they just give away 20,000+ tickets per game so someone else can throw them away.

I've been to Ohio Stadium for games around 40 times.  Almost every time I go, I go in, watch the game, go out, and have no problems personally.  I would say most of the time, I see some kind of bad behavior/taunts/stupidity directed at other OSU fans or the other team's fans.

I've been to most of the other B1G venues, and it's about the same thing.  Most of the time, no serious problems, but you are going to get heckled by some snotty-nosed drunk kid at some point.  Just keep walking.  When I get in my seat, I introduce myself to those fans around me, ask them their name and where they live, and express hope that we will have a fun game to watch.  I think that really helps.  I've had those fans shoo away hecklers for me.  My conclusion is that people are people no matter where you go, and you will find a lot of good ones, and you will always find that other element.

The worst experience I ever had was in Ohio Stadium by a couple of young, drunk men - OSU fans.  I took my 15 year old daughter, who was sitting next to those guys.  I was in my own little world listening to The FAN pregame show with my headphones.  Early in the game my daughter nudges me and tells me that those two guys were saying suggestive things to her, and the guy immediately next to her kept spitting snuff on the concrete and it was splashing up on her ankle.  Papa Bear came out, and I had a very short conversation with those two, which was very effective in causing them to vacate their seats immediately.  Didn't see those guys the rest of the day.  But I have always wondered what would have happened if they had gotten mouthy with me.  I'd probably still be locked up.

HS
ScarletNGrey01's picture

A number of years ago took my 14 year old daughter (she now does modeling gigs) to a home game and as we were walking to the shoe drunk students would whistle and hoot and yell out.  I started to go after one group of them and my daughter grabbed on to me and told me to back off and just ignore them.  You can only hope they have daughters some day and realize what numbskulls they were.

The will to win is not as important as the will to prepare to win. -- Woody Hayes

HS
THEOSUfan's picture

My daughter is no model, but she was one of those 15 year olds that looked and carried herself like she was 20, and her blond hair seemed to draw that kind of attention.  I'm a tolerant guy, but I'll be damned if a couple of guys are going to hit on my teen baby girl, essentially sexually harassing her, and spit tobacco juice on her.

Same game we parked up by the student houses, and on the way down Lane Ave we walked by a house that had a banner that said, "Freshman Girls Orientation".  There were 2 guys in cowboy hats sitting on the porch drinking and throwing the cans out into the yard, blasting "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy".  I pointed to them and told my daughter, "Those guys are why you will not be going to Ohio State."  :)

HS
Metal Guru's picture

Sorry Dad, but "those guys" are at every university in the country.

I have two simple rules for my daughter (1) no fraternity parties (2) no dating athletes. She's heard enough bad stories about both that she agrees with me.

HS

She lives off campus of a private school in Va, and, fortunately, has a good head on her shoulders.  That said, that story, while 100% true, is a little tongue in cheek.  At 51 yoa I am quite aware that those "cowboys" don't just live on Lane Ave and attend only OSU.

HS
Dillon G's picture

How can there be 186 arrests but only 104 ejected? After their arrest they were allowed to watch the rest of the game?

#walkaway

HS
Eric Seger's picture

That leaves us with 11 schools, for which some reports are more in depth than others. An arrest is an assumed ejection, though it was not tabulated as such below. For the sake of the data provided and shown in this story, ejections stand for kicked out of the stadium, but not necessarily an arrest.

I went to The Game last year (it was awesome, needless to say) and some fans of TTUN in my section repeatedly tried to get under the skin of any Buckeye they could. It almost got physical before the two men were escorted out of the stadium. So much pride for such a lousy team.

HS
Crumb's picture

It got nasty in my section too with some of them cheering J.T. Barrett injury. This is the biggest reason why I think they should try to keep The Shoe alcohol free. Fans from that team up north would be hard pressed to make it out alive if the people they harass have their inhibitions lowered.

HS

Dot D I's picture

My Bucket List includes seeing at least one home game at as many of the 128 Division 1 FBS schools as I can before I die. I'm a ways in, clocking about seventy games at various venues. By far, the single worst experience I've ever had was at Camp Randall.  I am still stunned by the level of sheer assholitude shown to a visiting fan by Badger fans. To this date, I hate Wisconsin, and the whoopin' the Scarlet and Gray put on them last season was by far the sweetest drubbing of an opponent I've ever seen.

I was at the game with my seventy year old mother. She graduated from Ohio State in 1959, and was a lifelong Buckeye. She was thrilled to accompany me to the 2002 game to see her team play. Of course, we both represented our team with school colors, and that is something I feel proud to do when watching my team play an away game (showing up in Ohio State garb is something obligatory, right?).  Anyway, we beat the Badgers that day by about five points.  During the game, there was an obscene level of hostility and poor sportsmanship displayed by Badger fans to the visiting Buckeye fans...and not one Badger fan saw fit to chastise their fellow fans for this.  My mom got beaned in the head with ice cubes!

During the game, we witnessed the arrest of four brawling fans not far from us who were, presumably cheering for the same team. And though we were seated on the fringe of the visiting fans section (where we probably should have expected some level of agitation from the home fans) and I was expecting these fans to show their asses, I am still somewhat shocked by the behavior of the home crowd in Wisconsin.

It is never fun to feel threatened as a visiting fan, but I was worried for a little while as we exited the stadium.  This is the reason I make every effort to behave myself when in the Horseshoe, and I try to help visiting fans enjoy themselves by being a gracious host.  It isn't hard to do, and generally makes the game more enjoyable for everyone.  School pride is one thing.  Menacing hostility is not something a good fan base should promote, and I'm proud of my fellow Buckeye fans that are of a similar mindset.

Never take anything you see in the bathroom mirror too seriously. --A. Russell

The numbers are definitely interesting but do absolutely no good in telling us who has the best or worst fans. Some stadiums could be more strict or some could search a little harder you just never know and can make the numbers say whatever you want them to. Mad respect to Iowa though. I think all schools should be required to document and release all arrest made at any stadium. It would make for GREAT offseason reading!!

Ohio State is clearly #3 behind Mich State and Wisconsin, and most likely #4 if non-reporting Penn State is included.  Thus here is something to strive for, and the Buckeyes are not that far behind the 2 conference leaders.  At least it can be noted that OSU is far ahead of the other members of the B1G for drunkenness, ejections and arrests both in raw numbers and percentages.
