If the Buckeyes fail to close the deal on Austin Mack
"It's always scotch-thirty on my island."
Wow a possible decision from Ferns tomorrow? Is he planning on visiting again tomorrow?
Has prom this weekend, could be next weekend depending on Ohio State's scheduling.
Not suggesting a commitment from Ferns happens tomorrow, but the Buckeyes could have a much better idea if they're chasing a ghost at this point.
I know ferns is probably the best LB in the country for the 2016 class and I admit I don't know too much about him other than that and the fact his decision is between OSU, PSU, and WVU, but would a verbal to a team other than the Bucks indicate he might not be a good fit for our scheme as ILBs go or would it be an academic thing or our coaches, too much LB depth or what?
No disrespect to Ferns but does anybody know what advantages (or disadvantages) OSU, PSU, or WVU have against one another to land Ferns?
Of course it won't kill us to not get him as we already have talents like Nick Conner, and Justin Hilliard AFTER our current starters depart.
One day I will valiantly become a political prisoner of 11W jail.
The 2 biggest things I have seen mentioned is that Ferns brother is at WVU, and WVU has a good petroleum engineering program, which is what he is interested in.
You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton
Hard to get a handle on those two kids (Ferns) that knocked on my door in St. C in 2011 is the No. 2 LB in the country. How cool is that? Times do change indeed.

I think if Ferns and Hansford both want in you take both of them. Perrys gone after next season Darron Lee could join in going to the league. Kwon could be gone the year after that if he has two good seasons at MLB.
We were born to love Ohio State and hate that team up north.
Kwon could be gone the year after that if he has two good seasons at MLB.
Kwon WILL be gone after 3 stellar seasons at MLB.
I'm not sure anyone can definitively say that. Injuries happen, guys plateau, stay and want a forth pair of gold pants. It definitely seems like an expectation of him at this point to do which is crazy
Another excellent write up, Birm. Chase Lucas still looks good!
Never before in the history of man have lives less lived been more chronicled. - Dennis Miller
Do you think they'd take 3 even if ferns committed tomorrow in order to ensure they don't lose hall?
Linebacker was one of our weaker units when Urban took over; now it is one of our clear strengths. When we can only take 2, maybe 3 LBs, first world problems.
Respectfully, I wouldn't use the word 'weak', even when referring to the 2012 - 2013 seasons. Our linebackers, while not revolutionizing the game on ever play, were solid. Of course, you said 'weak-ER', and that is true. Comparatively, this was the most sparse time at Linebacker U in recent memory.
Never take anything you see in the bathroom mirror too seriously. --A. Russell
The RIGHT three at LB would be the beast. Ferns, Borland, and Hansford would be a dynamic trio. Add in Baker, Hilliard, Conner, Booker, Worley, Cam Williams, and McMillian and OSU would be set at the LB position. Talk about depth? Good grief.
Just saw they offered Caleb Kelley from California any real chance there?
My heart would cry tears if we missed out on Eichenberg AND Ferns. Please help me Urban!

Get well soon Mrs.Naut 6-0 > 3-6.
There's a good indie movie based off of that old classified, on Netflix, called Safety Not Guaranteed. Really good movie.
When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.
Beware the army of the 12 Monkeys!!
Either way, I think an answer from Ferns is coming soon, maybe even as soon as tomorrow.

Admit it Birm, you know something but you're not telling. LOL
Is there a difference between Viper and Leo? "No, we just thought Viper sounded cooler."---Former Buckeye Coach Mike Vrabel
All I know is that Luke Fickell will be at St. Clairsville and the Buckeyes are hoping to get an understanding of where things are at and where things are going to be.
I lived in St. C for a few years. They now have a chipotle's at the Ohio Valley Mall, and if that's not tempting, the old-fashioned DQ on the hill by the high school is an oldie but goodie.
Wow, that was a Juicy hurry up.
Ferns is a must-get in my opinion. Hansford would be icing on the cake
I originally thought that there was no way osu would take 3 LB this class, but looking back over the last few classes: Mitchell left, Johnson is done, Berger is a ? I think.
So over the last 3 classes (not counting berger) you have Lee, Mcmillan, Booker, Baker, Hilliard, and Conner. I actually think 3 wouldn't be terribly out of line if perhaps berger can't contribute. Especially since Perry and williams are gone for sure after this year and the SLIM chance that Lee leaves.
Shazier left early. Lee can leave early.
I absolutely love Darron Lee, but trust he ain't on Ryan 'Damn' Shazier's level yet.
"I've had smarter people around me all my life, but I haven't run into one yet that can outwork me. And if they can't outwork you, then smarts aren't going to do them much good." - Woody Hayes
Personally, I think Lee has surpassed Shazier's level at this stage in their careers. Lee's more of a sure tackler, takes better angles, and is in better position more often.
I love RDS but the Buckeye lBs have a much more cleaned up look now.
I have to disagree, I think they had similar paths coming out of high school and are similar players but Shazier was something different and everyone instantly knew who we was. He took great angles and flew all over the field, was a sure tackler as you'll see below and set the tone physically which is something I've seen Darron do at times but not as much as Shazier. Shazier has the speed to edge rush like Lee but also had strength and moves to get around tackles and pulling guards, I don't think Lee has that yet but I trust he will. I know we all like shiny new things (Cardale, Lee) but we can't forget how great players in the past were (Braxton, Shazier).
This man was a dog.
Come on Siva!
Reminiscing about the oldies like XBrax and Shazier is starting to make ME feel old!
Funny story. a few days ago I was talking to a guy at work about the Spring game, he had to work so couldn't watch it. Asked me how the 'old guy' did in the QB competition. I was like "Braxton?" Turned out he was talking about Troy Smith. It felt kind of weird.
Thanks, as always, Birm.
Related: has anybody ever heard of a fan base that has this kind of resource for info on their team? Not blowing up skirts here, but 11W is the best thing any fan could hope for. Well, if you're a life-long Buckeye.....
"you can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning"
Couldn't agree more Bob G . We are truly blessed to get this much inside info every day. Thanks again Birm. Excellent as always. Nice tease on Ferns too. Will be checking 11w all day tomorrow waiting for the BOOM!

Why would Penn State want to keep Hall and Hansford in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area instead of coming to Pennsylvania?
Shut your face, Heisman.
Bitter Bier Gesicht!
Ignorance isn't bliss for the rest of us.
What am I missing here? I was wondering the same thing when I read it.
Is Heisman just being a smart-ass (as in PSU is "near" the DC area) or he alluding to some behind the scenes intel?
TH thrown in jail for disorderly conduct.
Even if Ohio State lands Mack, and Corley, I want Snelson.
If going on talent alone, same here. I won't forget watching the high school game that was televised of T Gibson, and being even more impressed by Snelson, BUT if his character fits our team, which I hope it does, then I hope we get him. If his off-field issues continue to plague him, then I won't be too sore about it. I just hope we don't end up getting burned by him...

Great to see Tuf in the class - I love what competition does to some players it brings out the best and makes everyone play better. Going to be tough to say "See Ya" to some players that may want in.
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
Seattle Sounders 2019 MLS Champions
Again... FIRST WORLD PROBS.
Yeah, there's no way you can turn down an LB whose name is Tuf.
Sooner or later it all gets real.
I love it when Birm has the goods and he leaves the commentariat hanging.
Don't think you turn Ferns away
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
I tend to agree.
Is Justin Layne still a target or has that ship sailed to East Lansing?
He is still in play I think, just a few higher up on the board.
Ohio heresy I know, but if we can only get one, I'd almost prefer Hansford. With Kwon, Conner, Borland, and Berger, we have a number of prototypical LBs.
Tuf Borland is going to be a freakin monster! I've watched his Hudl highlights a few times and continuously end up more impressed!
Earle for MOD in 16', it'll be the last best thing to ever happen to him.
As always, great work Birm. Thanks for making the offseason as tolerable as possible.
Is it Labor Day yet?
“Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”
No. I checked my iPhone calendar. :/
Need to get one of those
Why is Jerron Cage so sad? Maybe a Buckeye offer will put a smile on that face. Great stuff as always Birm. Thanks.
Charlie don’t surf.
Maybe I am in the minority, but I wish our DT recruiting was where our LB situation is. I am really excited about our 2017 DT prospects and where we sit on their lists, but am a bit dumbfounded as to why we aren't getting more top tier DT's to come play for us. I completely trust Urban and our staff, but any insight(besides geography)BIrm as to the struggle?
DT is tough for everyone and always will be. Thats why it is the second highest paid position in the NFL. Agile, fast, aggressive 300 lbs humans are very rare.
Also changes in the offenses dictate a more agile DT instead of just a space eater. Looks like the Bucks would rather recruit what used to be DE types that can pack on size for DT. Diesel did start outside.
Yep. And Bennett was an inside/outside guy as was Cam Heyward, John Simon, Adolphus and even Bosa!
It really has been the trend at Ohio St. to move big, athletic D-linemen inside and out because of necessity, talent, or just because of the style of play by offenses these days.
Although the SEC footprint has historically produced the lion's share of DT prospects, when the Buckeyes beat 'Bama in the Sugar Bowl in a slugfest Battle Royale that featured linemen, we might have introduced the CFB world to a new trend of smaller, athletic D-linemen who are BUILT UP to be elite tackles.
think you're about 10 months ahead of everyone on that..
Crossing the northern border now! Time 2 do a little good old fashioned flag planting in the TSUN! #traditionmatters #firststop4yearsinarow

Bottomline Fickell isn't going down there to string Ferns recruitment out any further. There is top flight talent waiting on Urban and Co. door step and they are not going to wait long.

Oh come on! Are we relegating Harbaugh to the Upper Peninsula only now? Doesn't seem fair.
Let's keep the momentum of the NC and the 99,000 fans going ... bring 'em to the good guys!!

Just read that OL Little is planning on 2 visits to tOSU! Top OL in nation! One visit will be in summer the 2nd an official no dates set yet. Would this be a great get and just for the hell of it get Gary. Wow, would that be some big BOOMS.
Ferns, Henderson added to Tuf would be yet another great LB class. Felder's transcripts are being reviewed. I think we'll see a flip coming w/in 2 wks. Now if we can get Hamlin and Fuller.
That's good, but I can't trust any football player named Greg Little
Saw this as well is there any real shot here Birm? I know you say if we can get them to visit anything is possible...
Getting a visit is a whole lot different than a player saying he's going to visit. Honestly, it's not even worth speculating on until a plane ticket is purchased and a date is set in stone.
The boards up north are lit up there following an article how they have now taken over Jersey. They have Gary wrapped tight and 17 and 18 are theirs for the taking. They hope that Gary doesn't pull a Deshaun Hand and go somewhere else. He has no favorites right now and they are afraid he will flip. WOW
Those thinking OSU is locked down on the two LBs mentioned in the thread, better wonder why OSU offered 2016 5* LB, Caleb Kelly, out of Fresno Ca. last night
To get Ferns to pull the trigger.
A couple years ago, I was not very high on the older Ferns and was glad he passed on us. His younger brother, simply put, is a damn stud and we need to end up with him. He is a wrecking ball and a hell of an athlete. Would love to see him, Hilliard, and Borland as the starting 3 a couple years down the road.
Cool write-up. I definitely am interested to see what we find out today about Ferns. He is one of those guys I would really like to see the Buckeyes get (obviously). I know from the get-go one of his biggest concerns was the school having a Petroleum Engineering degree, did Ohio State add that?
