You should not believe everything you read on the internet...but a post is forever....DOH!
Thank the Maker that I was born in Ohio, cradle of coaches, US Presidents, confederate-stomping Generals, and home of The Ohio State University Football Buckeyes- 2014 UNDISPUTED National Champions!
Full disclosure: There are several comments I posted out there in the interwebs somewhere that this team would go as far as Braxton Miller would take it.
That was true for all of 2 games. ;)

I still don't think Fickell is a great play-caller but that is just my personal opinion and it is ok to have differing opinions.

It may turn out to be another Happy Valley incident... You know, a hard- fought, away from home victory that binds the team closer.
On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised to see Urban hang 74 on 'Vaw Tech'

After the pick-6, I said "Why can't we win a big game?" and I thought UFM was overrated/past his prime - I've never loved being wrong so much.
Counter: After the PSU game (I attended) I had a feeling deep down that we would not lose another game all season, and I told everyone around me how i felt.
"I am El Guapo...the handsome one."
Jedkat, you are right on! The only thing missing from this article was these fraudulent Buckeye bashers was their pseudonyms they go by. Because, you are right, none of these experts and high achievers are going to fess up to it. Also he left out " What has Urban Meyer ever won for us?" And the "Get rid of Ed Warriner..." UNBELIEVABLE!
My thoughts after VT "This will be a B1G challenge for Meyer and coaching staff, especially Ed Warriner. They will earn their pay this year."
Regardless, thank you for the quotes! At least they will know their own comments.

"Conversely, Urban Meyer and his players are an unstoppable army of football automatons that feel no emotion and win in any and every setting."
anything other than the aftermath of the VaTech game I would agree. how can you not be prepared for all defenses? I think urban was kicking himself in the ass because it was embarrassing for the coaching staff as well not to have any answers for the bear front and 0 coverage. don't forget our wr's dropped a lot passes while the VaTech TE were making lynn swann like catches. it was a perfect storm of mistakes, and the coaches were just as much to blame.
MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS
Bud Foster conducted his masterpiece. I have never seen such an impressive array of blitzes before. They came from all over the place in different directions, immediate and delayed, with multiple numbers from six men to four men. He is known as the best blitz coach in the business and against our young O-line he lived up to that reputation. You have to give coaches credit where credit is due.
The hindsight geniuses are no better than the arm-chair quarterbacks. Not one person here could foresee the turnaround and there were a lot of problems early in the season. At that point we had lost 3 of the last 4 and in bad fashion and few positives to hang your hat on. I guarantee every person on here had something negative to say after that loss, admittedly some more sensational than others.
Im not saying the "fire everyone" approach was correct but to act like these comments were anomalies and to call those who voiced their opinions "trolls" is ridiculous and, for many, hypocritical.
And no I wasnt one of the above comments, my account wasnt even activated back then.
I, for one, can assure you that I wasn't one of these dispicable creatures. My membership wasn't official until somewhere around week 4 or 5.
Comments made in a spiteful manner toward our Buckeyes, by an assumed Buckeye fan, are disgusting. With that being said, I respect those who "come clean" about comments they may have made in the heat of a loss. Lol
Don't flush the goldfish, don't kill the cat, don't take Ol' Yeller out behind the woodshed (unless he really does have rabies). Teams change, improve, find heroes, and get better. Calling for Urban's Matta's head, or spamming J.T. Barrett's Amir Williams' Twitter account, or sacrificing a goat to banish Luke Fickell Dave Dickerson from the land isn't just stupid, it makes it harder for you to enjoy it when a team pulls itself out of the muck and accomplishes something truly great.
It applies in Basketball too.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
Yep, in fact, it's ESPECIALLY true in basketball. What a team looks like in early January is a far cry from what they'll become in March.

I wasnt on 11W back then but I can relate with the sentiment, I was certainly pessimistic as well. This season has been a great lesson for us all. Next time things look bleak, we all need to "Remember 2014"
After the lose, I stated the following:

We are so soft
Curtis Grant is the biggest bust ever
Our Receivers are pathetic

I will give credit to Austin Ward from ESPN for picking OSU over Alabama - he unfortunately originally picked OU to beat OSU though. I think he might have changed his tune before the championship though.
In case you're curious, it's Mr. Spray
I never did figure out how he thought we'd beat Bama but lose to Oregon......

I clearly remember that graphic... I thought at the time, "F$%k them". It was nearly as disturbing as Vegas making us 10 point dogs based on the fact that their 'experts' thought TCU or Baylor should have gotten in over us. Bet they think twice about ever 'dogging' another Urban Meyer Buckeye squad in a big-time game again.
Vegas doesn't 'make' us 10 pt dogs because their 'experts' liked TCU or Baylor. Vegas sets the line to even out the betting.
Amazing to me how many people take sports line so personally.

don't forget danny Sheridan saying urban meyer wasn't a top 25 coach before and after the sugar bowl. he's the epitome of arrogance.
if people are properly motivated, gigantic success often follows even the dumbest failure imaginable.
I've never seen any team that actually, truly inspired me the way this team did. I feel like I love Ohio State even more after this season, and it's because of what all of these individuals accomplished as one unit. Awesome.
Please feed us these articles all off-season!
I will admit that I still get goose bumps when recalling Clarett's super-human effort that willed my Buckeyes over the Canes in '02. The kind of stuff that dreams (and 30-for-30's) are made of. Long live the Scarlet and Gray!
claret's fumble recovery/steal was the biggest play of the game.

In all seriousness, this piece was needed as a reminder for the commentariat (myself included). Unfortunately, I fear the worst offenders will either not comprehend it's aimed at them or won't even read it.
Commenter who proclaimed that Rod Smith is better than Zeke has since unfortunately passed on as a result of a ridiculous consumption of crow. May God have mercy on his/her soul.
I don't remember exactly who that was, but I remember. I was pulling for Rod Smith during the sunset to do well for HIS sake, not because I didn't like the other backs. I hoped he would do well for him and for the team. Too bad, really.

The really depressing thing is one of these days those posts will come back because somewhere down the line we are going to lose another game. Not even Saban can avoid that. The only thing we can do is stay positive and roll our eyes when the boo birds come crawling back out of the woodwork...only to go back into hiding when Urban wins another big postseason game lol. It's a cycle of shit really.
"You're the patron saint of the totally effed" - Hot Tub Time Machine
Well said. I think some people LOVE when they get the opportunity to bitch about the Buckeyes program. Those chances don't present themselves too often, so the guys that get aroused by bashing the players and staff have to jump when opportunity presents itself. Lol
VaTech was a little different imo. a coaching staff caught that flat footed by a bear defense is inexcusable @ a top 5 program.
I remember being super depressed but thinking we weren't completely dead yet. I thought we'd find out what we were truly made of against Penn State, and then the way we rallied in that one, I thought it would be a defining moment for the team for the rest of the season because if they ever got in another jam (which they did) they could say 'hey, we can do this, we already have.' The rest as they say is history.
"The only good thing about it is winning the d*** thing" - Urban Meyer on The Game The War
Okay. Confession time. Preseason, I thought we'd lose one game and was 90% sure it would be to Penn State. I told about a handful of people this. And then VTech happened which made me think that we might lose to Michigan State as well.
After we pasted Wisconsin and got into the playoff, I was totally onboard with the notion that we would win it all.
I thought PSU would be the game we lost last year also.
I was in the same boat. There was no confidence lost after that game, but it did sting a good bit. I knew this season hinged on the MSU game in East Lansing.... As next season will too, only we get them in the Shoe this time around.
God willing I will be there (MSU game).
I will gladly wait. Signing day is up next. Then followed quickly by spring ball. Be interested to see if JT can keep his promise of healing that fast. And what young Bucks can work their way into the two deep. After that, it gets kinda of sparse.
I didn't think Penn State had the horses to hang with us for as long as they did. Quite impressive of their team, then and in hindsight.
I held back on any judgements until the MSU game. Then the way we won that game; it had to be for reals.
And then JT got hurt. NO WAY Car-dale Jones does what he did. It is still beyond belief.
But I did tell my friends if we beat bama we would beat Oregon. No-brainer. Their defense was not going to be able to hang (I thought they would score more points than they did; unbelievable job by the tOSU D).
And I am going to enjoy watching us pulp VA tech next year, whichever Qb starts. ;)
I bet a guy in mid November that if we played Bama in a bowl we would win. He owes me a gift card to Red Lobster. And he brought it up yesterday. I just laughed.
Somewhere, a beloved pet pony just dropped dead.
the success of the football team is directly tied to the magnitude of the animal chosen to be callously bumped off in the name of sports.
Surely there must be a kid with a pet elephant we could off...
I'm looking for a kid that owns a zoo or possibly Noah's ark
Maybe a white lion or snow leapord.... You know, some of the rarest animals on the face of the Earth.
I wish I could find my comments from that far back. I think I said something along the lines of, don't write us off yet because anything can happen in college football, it's a long season.
“Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him. Our kids earn what they get, and that includes respect.” - Woody
I do remember someone posting that throughout the season... Guess that was you? Hell of a nice call, brother!
I was there, I left stunned, we lost 3rd down in that game the inverse of the way they won third down in the CFP. I'm sure I expressed my great disappointment, but I was back on the horse a week later
ONE Not Done!
right there with ya TMac. The Va Tech game was lost on 3rd down offensively and defensively....and opposite of how we won the Bama and Oregon games. After the loss I thought we were in a troubling time unless they solidified the offensive line (big checkmark) and starting playing assignment football (gradual check) throughout the rest of the season.
The only bit of concern I had later in the season was us giving away stupid turnovers and I thought it might cost us a game. Luckily it didn't or else we'd have a whole new type of troll hate on this site
Walking down from D-deck during the VT game, I said, "I don't ever remember a time I've seen the buckeyes play so badly. And why can't our couches adjust to that defense? If they play like this we don't deserve to be in the playoffs, ever. But damn, we still got a chance!"
That VT game was a definite trap game that was placed perfectly to allow one of the best football runs in college football history. Once we got selected for the playoffs over TCU, I was in shock because I knew they could do it for real this time.
"I don't ever remember a time I've seen the buckeyes play so badly.
You our must had been in a coma in 2011. If so, lucky you!
I wrote that year off.
I brought the same hope and enthusiasm to every game that season. Maybe, in my heart, I knew it was futile... But that's what true fans do - They stick with their teams through good and bad. If I remember correctly, that was B. Miller's first season as a full time starter. Very inexperienced and un-polished, but you could see that he was something very special, even in that cess pool of a season. He was one of the lone bright spots.
That Miami game still haunts me. That was the worst game I saw us play going back as far as the Cooper years.
But the long bomb to beat Wisky, Bert, and Wilson is a memory I will always cherish ;)
Ummm the USC game was pretty bad.
I said we would win it all and got blasted to hell for my comments lol......I also said oregon's defense was garbage which proved to be prophetic. Am I still gloating? Yes, yes I am...... http://www.elevenwarriors.com/forum/ohio-state-football/2014/09/40461/oh...

I, too, called Oregon's defense soft on this site, and at places like ESPN and CBS... I was blasted for it, too. Lol
Turns out, they are soft. That whole damn conference is overrated due to their soft defenses.

Who is blue, fast and likes rangs? The Dankey Kang.
No, no, no, says he. The Ohio State Buckeyes football team will win the Big Ten and Rose Bowls and National Championships... IF you kill the beloved childhood pet of a random child. The conditions are that a) you will not know the child, b) the animal will drop dead instantly and not suffer at all, and c) the success of the football team is directly tied to the magnitude of the animal chosen to be callously bumped off in the name of sports.
I'll go along with this deal, if the childhood pet is a cat.
Duke is disappoint with your attitude.
I just stated that I was puzzled as to why the coaches didn't have J.T. roll out more to get away from the stacked box and disguised blitz packages. I came away from that game thinking it was better to lose EARLY than later in the season, and that was proved correct.
Saban on a cart eating cold pizza
Without the embarrassment that was that Va Tech loss, we would not have won the national championship. That humbled our players and coaches. Urban acknowledged that they were out coached and made every effort to never let that happen again. Our players had to learn winning was not a god given right bestowed upon anyone who wears the scarlet and grey. They had to work for every yard, every stop, and every point. The Hokies came to play and we let them do what they wanted. Once we were humbled, we quickly righted the ship and the rest is history. I am thankful for that loss as painful as it was to watch. Now lets all remember this.
Michigan and Ohio once fought over Toledo. Ohio Lost
Spot-on. That loss was a very important learning point for this year's team. The PSU game also served to help gel this squad.
i struggled with how much i wanted to put certain dudes on blast but in the end i settled for the high road and left these anonymous. not sure if that was the right call re: the meyer comment, but eh. im not made of stone.

Kinda wish you would have. If nothing else, those people would be publicly shamed and learn a lesson IMO. Then again, Im an asshole so what do I know.
it would also make them eat crow by responding to the comment but also to eat crow respectively as to not get dv'ed into oblivion
Ctrl+F to help find the comments. It was fun (thanks God he was too depressed to go put thoughts on internet after loss).

Wow, great timing and great article. Hopefully can ground us better for the next loss, and for the weaker seasons that will inevitably come.

THE Ohio State University
Realistically, it may have been a little weird if our faith - at least, in the 2014 season - wasn't shaken a bit after the Virginia Tech game. Although, calling for the coaches' heads was obviously premature.
Not to make excuses, but if you took into account how young and inexperienced much of the team was - and that a new defense had been installed, a loss to a couple of crafty old coaches with better talent than their record showed wasn't really that amazing.
The Hokies suffered an inordinant amount of injuries as the season progressed. The team that ended up losing six games was a shadow of the team we faced the second week. That should be taken in to account as well.
I have to admit, though - the perennial cry of the loser: "Wait until next year" - was starting to have some appeal. But at the time, if you looked closely - even in that debacle - you could see some promise.
In fact, I derived much of my optimism from this very site. I was particularly encouraged by the breakdowns provided by Ross and Kyle. They showed clearly what the coaches were trying to do - and you could see we weren't necessarily that far from making it work - even with such a young team.
Great post. I was one of the few people on Earth that didn't completely lose faith after that loss. My source of hope came from the fact that Urban Meyer was at the helm, and he hates losing more than anyone. I do see why it was easy for some to lose all hope, though.
some, but not all, of this stuff actually WAS true in september (the team was incredibly soft, players weren't performing up to their potential, etc). eze was definitely NOT at el guapo's level in september. but all credit to these coaches and players for busting their tails, improving each and every single week thereafter until they were the undisputed best team in the country. what a season.
the kids are playing their tail off, and the coaches are screwing it up! - JLS
yeah i agree that ed warinner is 10 star garbage and that rod smith shouldve been starting and urban was a loss away from his heart exploding and that JT barrett had no obvious talent
right, hence the
some, but not all
a better phrase might be "literally the smallest value above zero, but not all"
i mean, literally the entire point of my post is that kneejerk reactions to one game, especially at the beginning of the season, are dumb as hell for a reason. pointing out that the team was "soft," for example, makes no sense because they obviously weren't since they went on to win every single game after that. all it does is to allow people to look really stupid in retrospect.
Hell, I think they're soft for giving up 20 to Oregon. What a freakin' joke of a defense. TWENTY POINTS?!?!?!?
but you are 100% right, the blanket "all these guys suck" comments are certainly never called for
While Johnny was kind enough to spare those individuals who were brave enough at the time to spout opinions (no matter how uninformed), I will not show such mercy.
Ahh...CgroverL and his love for all things Rod Smith, not to mention his daily 15,000 word dissertations and constant grovelling about how everyone was picking on him.
When you lose, say little. When you win, say less.
I don't think any of those were mine. I'd be interested in seeing what I said. What thread is all of this from?
After all, I'm the guy who was calling out DR three or four games ago.
Read my entire screen name....
Yeah, right on! Negative, belly aching, band wagoners. And some dumbass kept screamin for Fickell's head on a platter.........oh, never mind...it was me.
We're all human. We're all wrong. But this is a reminder that when we're wrong, try to look decent doing so.
Fickell is the weak link in the coaching chain, imo. If not for the addition of Ash and Urban taking more of a hands on approach with the defense, we would have most likely witnessed a repeat of last season. Calling for his head is a bit harsh, though. lol
You're joking, right? If not, may I ask what makes your opinion valid? Have you played or coached D1 football? Were you involved in team practices in any way? Were you present in the team meetings? Were you on the sidelines?
BTW... while every single team we faced was triple-teaming our defensive Consensus All-American, there was one player who single-handedly picked up the slack to utterly terrorize opposing quarterbacks.
That player, Darron Lee, was a high school quarterback and safety who was not even on Urban's radar. The kid wanted to be a Buckeye real bad. But Urban wouldn't give him the time of day.
Lucky for us one defensive coach saw some potential in this kid as a linebacker. And he INSISTED Urban sign him, which he did.
Without Darron Lee, we probably don't beat Bama.
This coach is single-handedly responsible for getting the Silver Bullets back and for turning TOSU into linebacker u once again.
I'll give you one guess who this coach might be.
I love it.
I told people they'd be fine without that RB they have been playing at QB. I told people Elliott would make us forget Hyde. I told people they should set themselves on fire if they think Fickell should ever have been fired.
But what do I know?
Chest beating aside, you really sell Braxton Miller short if that is what you think of him. But we're all glad you have a chance to say you told us that you told us so. I like this thread because everyone gets to talk about where the felt about the team after the VT loss and determine what camp they are a part of. The ones who foolishly wrote this team off after one bad came and are coming clean begging for forgiveness or the ones who said they never doubted this team for a minute.
Ohio State looked bad against VT but the fact that the national embarrassment was too much for some to see the obvious-young team on a big stage for the first time for a lot of the rosters-makes me sad for the fan base.
Proudly dispensing unbridled arrogance since 1983.
I think this was the camp I was in. My thoughts were - clearly this team is a little greener than we thought (or hoped). New QB was going through growing pains. OL was struggling with a tough defense. Play calling was very predictable. The defense was still not cohesive, LBs were a bit lost in coverage and the secondary was still making mistakes preventing the team from getting off the field. As the season progressed, it was clear we were still a very young team as we continued to make any number of self-inflicted, dumb mistakes on the field. It wasn't until the MSU game where I saw our offense could be unstoppable, if they could just manage not to stop themselves. However, that offense did not re-emerge until the Wisconsin game, as our team went into a "lull" of sorts for the few games after MSU. The defense never truly came out until the Wisconsin game. They had shown hints in series here and there, but the Wisconsin game, developed a great game plan and executed it to perfection. Going into the Bama, I was convinced it was going to be a Jeckyl and Hyde thing - we'd either show up or we wouldn't. After the Bama game, the only question in my head was could we stop the one of the most high powered offenses in the nation (and maybe even historically). Once again, our youth showed in this game, self-inflicted wounds keeping Oregon around, but in the end, it was another exceptional defensive game plan that was executed to perfection that one the game for us.
Even today I still find those post-VT comments to be embarrassing. Completely giving up after only the 2nd game, pathetic.
Im pretty sure players and coaches take the losses harder than fans.but they have perspective and realize they have to work harder and improve. it serves no good purpose to bash the kids who work year round to achieve greatness.its easy to sit back and think we know better. sorry for the long post.. Go Bucks!!
In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey
Am I the only one on here that held their breath while reading that article hoping that something stupid I said wouldn't show up? Thankfully, none of those quotes were mine.
I have no problem with people coming on here and other similar sites to vent. It's a hell of a lot better than doing it to the players' twitter. I one thing for sure, I have never walked out of the 'Shoe more shocked and disgusted than I was on Sept 6, and I was there for the '98 MSU game too. That MSU game was a fluke, but this one we just looked like absolute garbage and never held the lead in our own stadium. Not acceptable. I was thankful for one thing, the season's lofty goals and expectations were gone early and I wouldn't have to worry about that whole "playoff" thing coming down to the wire for us...
Is anyone else pissed that not every 3rd article on ESPN is about the Buckeyes? They should take a lesson from DJ and start every article/sportscenter/nascar recap whatever. With a the Zeke run vs BAMA or King Cardale's grin with the trophy.
@MDBuckeye23 - Yes - I am. But I trolled a young punk Duck fan yesterday, that did some trash-talking to me before the NC game, and it was sweet! He works at a coffee shop, and I came in with my newly acquired "8 time national championship" T on, and the frown and disappointment on his face was palpable. (He had to wait on me, so that made it all the more sweeter!) Made my week!

I was disgusted by the loss. But I would never throw it on a player or players. I thought the VT loss was all on Urban. I thought he got out coached and didn't have his offense ready for what VT's defense brought. But I like how Urban took the blame and made sure his team was prepared and got better each week as the season wore on. The best coaches have their team peaking at the right time, and this team did that. It was a beautiful transformation!
In all fairness, it's nearly impossible to have your redshirt frosh QB with 1 game of experience, completely prepared. In that situation, you coach them the best you can and hope for the best. I don't think that loss was totally on Urban, I tend to put more blame on inexperienced line and QB play.
No one. No one thought the season would play out how it did. I in no way shape or form however thought our season was over. Deep inside I thought maybe 2 loses(MSU), being away had me worried. I just DID NOT want to loose our bowl game. I also wanted a SEC team for that bowl to set us up for the start of 2015. My expectations were blown away. Now WE sit here to defend 1st----our B1G title and defend the National Title. Already stoked for Spring Game.
I know one thing, I was sure pissed of at Herman's play calling that night. And I didn't say anything that I regret saying at that point in time.
On the bright side, after the VT game the passing game finally opened up and the defense finally started getting their act together.
Throw me in there with the guys that wish our comment history went back that far. I know I posted at least once, more to console myself, and I speculated on how awesome this team would be NEXT year, hehe...
Between the storybook ending of the season, the skewering of Bammer, the trio of QB's, the return of the Silver Bullets, the natty, champs in the first CFP... and I know I'm forgetting stuff... heck of a season to say the least. What a year to join the good guys here at 11W!
I was on a cruise ship during the Virginia Tech game where the only game shown was scUM. I admit, hitting port, turning in my WiFi and screamed For Fucks sake at the rock of Gibraltar.
The lord of brevity.
In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...
I never went as far as fire Urban, but I was thinking man, Coach has gotta win a big game eventually right? I wasn't on the fire Fickell boat, but I was on the "maybe Chris Ash wasn't a good hire" boat! Like the rest of you, never been so happy to be wrong! Chris Ash is a master defensive coach and on his way to being a HC somewhere soon!
We will fight to the end for OH-IO!
One of the many genius things that JT Barrett did was to not even have a twitter account, at least not until very late in the season, I believe. (Correct me if I'm wrong, because I don't have a Twitter account myself)
How much Twitspam would he have gotten after the VT game? It boggles the mind to think about.
I love all the people who act like they never doubted this team... So many of you are full shit. I had my doubts, never thought this year we would win it all. We looked bad early and got better as the season went along
Wherever you are, there you be!
Driving home the day after Va Tech, I was glad to hear the coaches more or less said that the loss was more their fault. I thought we didn't adjust very well during the game, but... not a big deal. But yeah, I thought 9-3 and hope we win a bowl.
In the excitement of the Cardale Jones Era, let's not forget that the B1G ended the year so well, and this will elevate the whole conference next year. I would not be surprised to see 4 Big Ten teams in the pre-season top 25.
Two things I'm looking forward to at the beginning of next year -- Minnesota beating TCU and the Bucks getting pay back on Va Tech and their hallowed coach, old Gobbler Face.
I'm also looking forward to Meyer schooling Harbaugh in November, and a NC repeat.
If we don't achieve all of this, fire all the coaches!
This made me giggle:
The defense kept shrugging their way to respectability.
Fesler gives an iron-clad guarantee and I'll go "Lizzy Borden" on Ol yeller, a sick little boy's favorite kitty and a little girl's pony with a dull, rusty hatchet. If it will make the Buckeye streak longer/stronger I'll kill, cook and eat Filbert and swallow the guppy whole too...and I'll sleep just fine. (I can hate myself in retrospect in the great beyond. In this life I'm "all in" for Buckeye supremacy.)
I certainly had some angry thoughts after the VT loss, although I'm happy I never said such ridiculous things as "Warriner is 10 star garbage". Wow, just wow. I do agree, however, that it was an ugly game in many facets. My biggest gripe was how few of the "bear beater" strategies were employed in the game and how the staff was seemingly caught off guard by it, even after Bud Foster said in the media that they were preparing for us as though we were Georgia Tech. But, I digress. Whatever minor issues arose that night, the staff made up for it in spades and then some.
And I 100% believed all season long that if we won out, we'd be in the playoff. Damn, what a hell of a year. I'm so happy to be a Buckeye!
We can't stop here; this is bat country...
Thinking back, when Tress or Cooper had early games like the VT game, the team never really improved all that much as the season wore on. I'd wager that lack of talent had a lot to do with those failures such that no amount of high-end coaching was going to make much of an impact.
That certainly conditioned my thinking for last season. However, I pretty much took a "wait and see" attitude because a loss, while frustrating, doesn't tend to make me want to jump off a bridge or anything.
The difference between then and now is talent and depth; we all see that today.
I recall saying, after the VT game, something like this:
"oh well, it's definitely a rebuilding year but at least we'll have Braxton back next year".
I was surprised at some of the vitriol but I actually felt a little relieved after the loss because I felt like it took the pressure off. I now fully believe that if they hadn't lost that game they never would have become champions. They should thank VT after they slaughter them next season!
I purposely avoided this website after the V Tech game. I already knew there would be crazy posts/threads that I didn't want to see. I was indeed mad and frustrated, and I didn't want to get even more mad reading post game threads on here.
I've read plenty of comments that no one thought the season would go as it did. While that may be mostly true, I didn't doubt they could recover from the loss. I told anyone that would listen that everyone was going to lose, and this season looked like those seasons in the 90s whet teams lost early and worked their way back in.
I'm glad that I wasn't on 11W when these prisoners of the moment went gloom and doom, like Buckeyes unfortunately seem all to good at. What am incredible ride. I'm glad they let me go along and marvel at their collective greatness.

When Braxton went down, I thought we were in for a 1-3 loss season. After VA Tech I thought it would be 2-4 losses. After Michigan State I thought 1-2 losses.
This is one of the great 11W columns of all time.
The only thing that could have possibly improved it is putting the names of those shitbirds next to the quotes! HAHAHA!
Full disclosure: I made my share of smart assed MENSA comments early in the season.
