Beating terrible teams isn't very exciting. It's better than losing, obviously, but I'd prefer not to schedule these kind of games.
Unfortunately we need games like this early in the season and especially with a young team. My only beef with scheduling MAC schools is the thought that we should be keeping the money in state. Alternate between Miami, Bowling Green, Toledo, Akron, Kent State, and OU with UC tossed in every now and then. Let MSU and UM take care of the directional michigan schools. It helps ease the budget constraints for the Ohio schools, gives us a good tune up game, and gives other Ohio kids the opportunity to play in Ohio Stadium.
The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick
I'm with you on this one, and "hooking" up little brother in Ohio will is always gonna happen. And to your point, better to help out Ohio schools, than some other state (especially that ^ one).
The early season patsies also offer more ticket availability for those that may not have season tickets or access to the expensive, more marquee match-ups. I took Barnsey Jr. to Kent State, and we had a fantastic time. Alumni Band Day, 4-Script Ohio's, lots of Buckeye TD's, and low-cost snacks! Any game at the Horseshoe is a spiritual experience if you have S&G blood in your veins.
Thank the Maker that I was born in Ohio, cradle of coaches, US Presidents, confederate-stomping Generals, and home of The Ohio State University Football Buckeyes- 2014 UNDISPUTED National Champions!
I took my kids and wife to their First Football game. It was against UCF couple of years ago and its a day ill treasure for ever. Im all for playing a couple of Ohio schools every year. Maybe one big OOC game, a mid tier school and 1 or 2 Ohio schools.
I had read many years ago that OSU was mandated by law to schedule these in-State games. Anybody remember seeing this?

Unfortunately we have two MAC schools on the schedule next year and neither one of them is from the home state.
The two above me said it perfect, it helps get money to these schools so they can continue to play football. Look at UAB for example they get no love from the bigger schools and now they have to get rid of these programs.
Earle for MOD in 16', it'll be the last best thing to ever happen to him.
If NFL teams get to play the Browns then we shouldn't feel bad about playing the likes of Kent State!
Every time someone sits down during a game at The 'Shoe, a Buckeye tree dies
This game came at the perfect time after that VT loss. Say what you will about the competition it was still a great confidence builder. We play someone really good that week there's a good chance we don't get our confidence back at all.

Crushed Las Vegas and their 40-1 Odds
This game was like an exhibition to build some confidence and get a lot of players on the field. But I agree that we should not schedule games against some of these weaker MAC teams.
The Spence fiasco was the start of this team's adversity which continued all season. The Kent State game was a needed morale builder after V Tech. The adversity this team would face only made them stronger.
Nothing wrong with playing one MAC school OOC, but that should be paired with playing one top tier top 5 conference opponent every year.
It seemed to not matter this year, or most likely next, but want the best teams best games only then will a true champion rise. As we have seen this year it is good to be tested early and even with a loss can make it into the playoffs. A loss to a better team than VT would have made the OSU in or out question less impactful... and would have been in without "contraversy".
We are undisputed champions for a reason, this year. The only ones questioning that are TCU fans. You will be hard pressed to name a team that has proven more in victories than this team, this year. We beat Mich St., Wisconsin, (a ranked Minn.) #1 Alabama and #2 Oregon. We beat TTUN too for that matter but that doesn't necessarily qualify as a quality win. We had a poor game but hell we beat a PSU team that at least went on to win their bowl game. Granted those last two didn't have great seasons but they are traditional powerhouses in college football. Don't discredit them just because they are familar B1G foes. What more could you possibly want?
Font... have a look... could have saved you a moment of WTF!
MIssed it, thanks. No bile was ever intended.
No worries, there is no dispute about who is no. 1 in the land... Just didn't want a Marine pissed at me! :-P
Semper Fi and Go Bucks!
I thought this was the game where the play calling turned the corner and set up our players in situations where they are most likely to succeed.
Eze, "We needed to come out like we did today for ourselves and for (the fans)."
Always an Up-vote for Zek want'n to pay it forward!
Meyer ALWAYS optimistic, “You still have a sick feeling in your stomach about last week, but we're moving forward, and I see a lot of young guys that are going to have great futures at Ohio State."
UFM, "...great futureS..." plural...can u say DynastyS!
Thanks Pat for the scully !
In my opinion one of the most important games we played this season. After the Va Tech game, confidence needed to be restored. Even though it was a cupcake game, you can't underestimate the mental toughness and validation of the players and coaches to bounce back and prove to themselves that if you do your job and follow the system in place, you are in fact a very good football team.
Tired of people detracting from our nonconfrence slate. This was a very credible schedule and tougher than anything Baylor or TCU had this year. Cincinatti, although our whipping boy, is no push over team. They had themselves a decent year this year and arguably had one of the better offenses in the nation when their transient QB was healthy. Kent State was a joke, yes. That was our one gimme game. VT was supposed to be a solid opponent and they were, for that one game with their health mostly intact. They too ran into consistency problems with injuries throughout the year. Navy, although a military school, is always a tough team with a tough sell to everyone else that doesn't have to play them on their schedule. Most SEC schools don't have a schedule that comprehensive. Could our NONCON have been tougher? Yes it could but this string of games was adequate for our SOS. The first three or four games of the season are games that teams need to work out the kinks in. Look how much we progressed as a team this year. Some people arent satisfied unless we play 4 SEC teams before rolling into the B1G conference slate. I like having that Marquee matchup or two, along with two other respectable teams and a cupcake.
We shouldn't allow ourselves to be bullied into a tougher early season schedule. I love having one quality OOC opponent early in the year to get me excited in September. But easing into the schedule isn't a bad thing. Our history and reputation will get us there in the end if we win our games. Why risk an early upset just to please the talking heads?
You Win with People
In OOC games, I'd prefer third or fourth game of the season for big name schools and November at the Shoe for SEC teams.
Ohio State: The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.
Iirc we have to play 1 ohio team every year in the shoe to keep revenue in state... If that's correct that leaves us with Cindy, bowling green. Ohio, Miami, Kent state, Akron, Toledo, and some of the other small schools...as a result none of those are top tier so but some aren't scrubs. I like keeping the money in Ohio but I wish these schools could get better...I wish we could have played cinch while they were doing well in the big east
Why does Ohio keep moving north? Cuz *ichigan sucks!
Plus I have heard we won't schedule away games in stadiums with less than like 50-60k, outside of mandatory B1G games, due to the amount of traveling fans we have and revenue...hence why we play cinch at Paul brown for an away game and not their home field.
We were ranked #22 for this game lol.
Let's party, Columbus.
Where were we before this game?
I'm not saying that we didn't deserve the ranking. It's just funny to look back and see how close a National Champion winning team came from being ranked outside of the top 25.
I strongly feel that preseason and early season polls need to be abolished. They are only used now because writers don't have anything to talk about everyday if it's not game day or no other drama going on in the sport.
I'm not saying we didn't deserve it either. I seriously just wanted to know where we ranked before we played this game lol. I was wondering if we dropped in ranking after winning.
The best part of the Kent State game for me was seeing Kent St come out in a Bear front and get eaten alive - backing back into their standard front after (I think) only one series.
Poor Akron, they will be remembered as our cathartic release game from 2014.
Isn't this the last game we had #7 for too?
Never was a math whiz but, adding up the quarter scores equals 76 points --- something is askew.
It's because that box score in this article shows OSU scoring 17 points in the 4th quarter when they actually only scored 7 points.
I skipped a wedding to watch this game on TV. I knew the game was going to be a blow out, and the wedding was my cousins. But its a principle. Do not schedule your wedding for the fall. Ramzy said it best so I won't get into it any further.
