Chase Young to return following the Rutgers game, will play against Penn State.
Please take the game down... We all know how it ended...

Worst part? The only game I could get to this entire year was this game. Soul crushing.
How firm thy friendship..
Small price to pay for a championship a few months later? I think so.
Definitely an anomaly that could never have been predicted, nor would likely be repeated any time soon. Without a doubt served as a reminder to the college football universe that no team should be ever overlooked if a NCG is your goal.
(of course _ichigan seems to forget this particular lesson often).
I'm just so honored that I got to experience this as a student. And not only that, but I went to the game. I mean...holy shit...I WENT TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AND WATCHED US WIN. Like........what?
Same here. Actually, first game in over five years. Oy.
"The height of human desire is what wins, whether it's on Normandy Beach or in Ohio Stadium." - Woody Hayes
It was so hard to believe when it felt like the season was over.
Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
I don't know if the Buckeyes win it all without losing this game. Meant a lot in the growth of this team.
You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton
The fact that we lost this game still makes me sick... I can't wait for some revenge on sept 7... Zeke goes for 150 and Cardale... Yes I said Cardale throws for 270 hooks up with mike Thomas for 2 scores bucks win 45-17
"We've always had the best damn band in the land, now we've got the best damn team in the land" Jim Tressel
Predicting a slow start to the season for Zeke?
He's taken out at the half.
"I am El Guapo...the handsome one."
Nah. Urban's gonna make sure VT remembers this game to their dying day.
This will be the first time a team just quits and walks out of the stadium before the game reaches halftime. Final score 700-0.
This is going to be much worse than the revenge against Sparty. Virginia Tech is not Sparty.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
Agree to disagree. Yea Cardale gets his 270, but so does EZE E!
This is the one game I have not been able to bring myself to watch again. Maybe soon.
Totally agree. It took me 4 months to watch the loss to Clemson again. ( that actually was an accident.) But I couldn't stop watching once it started.
But hey, in hindsight it was worth the anguish!
I don't think I've ever watched a Buckeye loss twice.
...and Michigan still sucks.
Totally. I believe the Buckeyes are undefeated in games I've watched more than once. Something like 198-0. It's almost surprising to look through season records from the past and see numbers other than "0" under the loss column before thinking, "Oh yeah. We didn't win a national title that year."
Buckeyes are still undefeated every time re watch the Miami game from 03. I've watched it every 3-4 months consistently for the last 12 years and we win it every time! I get the trivia question right every time too! Never gets old, yet I still can't help but yell at the refs every time they miss Miamis blatant holding and pass interference that appeared to be a part of their game plan.
I have trouble watching the '06 version of The Game in its entirety, because I know what happens a month later to UF.
Let's party, Columbus.
What is this Virginia Tech game that you speak of? I don't remember it happening.
Alcohol is a helluva eraser
“Ain’t life grand when you finally hit it!” DLR
These are not the Virginia Techs you are looking for. "OK, move along"
I had that memory in my head for 7 hrs on the drive home 9/7/2014. I want to put 72 on Va Tech next year so Mark May can feel the pain of saying 72-0 again and again. Nothing worse then explaining to your son after his first game in the Shoe Ohio State lost. It still stings but not as much since I have the pure joy of Victory in the First Playoffs.
You win with people
I know how your son feels. MY first game in The Shoe (I was 10) was a 6-0 loss to Wisconsin in '82 - the first time Wisconsin had won in Columbus. EVER. My parents reassured me before the game that Ohio State "always" beats Wisconsin. Still ticks me off all these years later.
V Tech game at the time was such a disappointment, but we now know it was just growing pains. This game and the PSU game did wonders for this young team.
To think how far we came from that dark day...every phase improved dramatically after that... I can't wait for redemption day at VT next year to start chase2.0
Why does Ohio keep moving north? Cuz *ichigan sucks!
Possibly the best thing that could have happened to this team. The strides they made after this game were enormous, and I guarantee the lessons learned from this game played a huge part.
"I'm in favor of it" - John McKay, on the execution of his team.
All I know is we currently hold the nations longest winning streak. Undisputed.
If anyone would have told me on the way out of the stadium that night that we would be National Champions and win the first playoff, I would have asked them for a toke of whatever the hell they were smoking. That was a long walk back to the hotel. Shocked is the best word I can come up with.
Seriously. All summer I had read that Ed Warriner was one of the best OL coaches in the country, but after this game I didn't think they could turn it around this year. I started to seriously worry about losing to Cincinnati. Luckily the schedule happened to set up in a way where these guys got more time to come together before their biggest games of the year. I think this loss created an intense focus and gave these guys an edge they played with the rest of the year.
They hate us cuz they aint us!! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I agree. I'm not sure fear of losing is the right term, but I always played better when I was insecure. Sounds weird but it always worked that way.
point on comment. I felt the same way. Slowly they righted the ship and away they went. Sept was a very iffy month. Seemed like two different teams from the beginning of the season to the end, where they physically beat the shit out and manhandled the other teams.
Props to the coaches and players, I was so deflated after that game, cant imagine going back to work after that devastating loss.
Look at the faces of Devin and Evan in the picture. Little did the fellas know what was in store for them.
Pay-back gonna be...
Bad to the Bone !
Put the hammer down...
STOMP'N-U'M...gonna be Sweeeet !
It's really curious to me that the VT game next season is being viewed by a lot within our fan-base as though OSU has something to prove following that loss. 'Undisputed' and all that.
This will be the only chance at redemption because tOSU normally does not play VT. So, if we blow them out next season there will be no doubt that that loss was a fluke.
Thank you for that. Enjoy your chemistry courses, they will be the most interesting thing about the biomolecular sciences.
Denny, I graduated in December 2013 from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. HARDEST damn thing I've ever done in my life. I went back to school while working full time and have a wife and kids to love and take care of. That's why I made my name here "Biomolecular".
Watching this team go through the adversity they went through this season brings me that much more joy because it was the epitome of what I went through at The Ohio State University. GO BUCKS!!
I will be capturing the URLs for all the games to watch this Spring and Summer....... except this one.
"you can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning"
We didnt play very well, but Brewer was throwing out of his mind and his recievers were catching everything. They never replicated that performance the rest of the year.
Good point, Mb5599. I looked in to why that might have been - and you're right - they did play above their heads that night. But perhaps more importantly, They suffered an inordinant amount of injuries over the next several games. If memory serves, they were down as many as fourteen starters at one point.
If that's true, they did a fantastic job to end up 6-6 on the season - and then win their bowl game. Knowing that takes a little of the shock away from that game. A little. But it's safe to say that they were better than your typical .500 team when we played them.
They may be a decent team next season. So instead of the 'albatross around our necks' our loss to them was most of last season - next season a victory may actually be looked upon as a "quality win" -
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement. - Will Rogers
That game to me was a lot like Bert sneaking away with a win in 2010.
We are going to punch their teeth out.
A week later the Shoe was fully packed for an in-state foe. I seriously thought Kent St would give us a decent fight and be able to compete while we were down. All JT did was throw 6 touchdowns and the D pitched a shutout. I dont care who the competition is...that was a big league rebound.
Send that bitch bird into a tantrum.
...Because I couldn't go for 3
Their 3rd down conversion rate was the game changer. Pure and simple. We need to curb-stomp them in Blacksburg to get rid of that dark cloud. Then the sun will come out again.
Saban on a cart eating cold pizza
Watching the last two games of the season, you think that was a point of emphasis for our defensive staff? ;-)
No, but we still need to curb-stomp them.....
It's going to be ugly.
I think the best quote I read from the championship game was "Why don't they make the entire plane out of OSU's third down defense?"
Couldn't we have skipped this one?!?!?!?!
PG <3 PG
How I felt after VT and how I felt after Michigan State - all in one gif:
Everyone counted us out and the entire BIG conference so im glad we dont crown the champion in week two. We got better every week.
Critics all year acted like Virginia Tech was similar to Appalachian State. They're a good program. Next year we are going to destroy them. No mercy.
To look at how poorly they performed in all 3 phases then, compare it to the final 3 game run against Wisky, Bama and Oregon, WOW! Awesome coaching, and players growing up right in front of us. Went from being one of the worst Buckeye performances I had ever seen to probably the best 3 game run in the past 40 years.
can't we just pretend this never happened?
Revenge a$$ thumping 72-0
I think we should thank VT. I'm not sure we would have been the same team without the VT and Penn State games.
I continued my streak--this was the only Ohio State game I went to this year.
They have lost 4 of the last five times I have seen them in person (no small feat when you realize how few losses we have had recently).
When I broached the subject of going to Texas, several of my friends [rightfully so] threatened me.
Yep, watching them at home or my favorite watering hole ain't so bad.
You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.
You are effectively banned from Ohio Stadium.
Fair enough. But then, I want credit for the National Championship win!! :-)
Fair enough. Now stay the fuck home!!!
Fear The Nut - Keep going to games. I had a streak that way for a long time. It happens when you go to big games. I think I went to the USC loss, Illinois loss, PSU loss, MSU loss and possibly one other in a row.
I'm happy to say I'm not running a winning streak somewhere near 10. I haven't seen a loss since 2011 MSU.
I live in AZ. These are the four of last five:
Va Tech 2014
USC (in LA 2009?)
Loss to Texas in the Fiesta Bowl
I was present for the win over TTUN in 2013 in AA, so that was something.
I will keep going and I hear ya, I only go to good matchups. Shyte happens.
I've never been to a losing game...and I was at The Game, New Orleans, and Dallas...you should buy me tickets. ;)
The only scUM game I went to was back in 2000, I think, and we lost. And it was FREEZING. But I had season tickets when we won the title after the 2002 season. Ironically I sold my ticket to The Game for $250. So I still have yet to attend The Game when we win.
I guess it's still true, that if you're gonna lose, you'd better do it early in the season...
In case you're curious, it's Mr. Spray
That's why the SEC plays 'puffs in November.
I still don't know how we lost that game. It's almost like the football gods decreed "Ohio State must lose this game" and then made some highly improbable plays happen in just the right sequence. Kind of like Texas in 2005. Corey Smith drops an easy touchdown. Runs the wrong route causing an int return for a TD. Barrett has several other passes dropped, and always seems to turn right into the pressure causing sacks. Meanwhile, the VT QB pulls passes out of his ass he never completed before (and probably hasn't since) on every freaking third and long.
I think if we played that game ten times and played exactly the same way we'd win 9 of them.
The way I think about that game though, is that we may never have elevated to the heights we did if we hadn't lost it.
OSU in early September was not the better team. I think VT wins 5 of 10 against September OSU. Against January OSU 0 of 10.
Can you imagine how easy its going to be for the master motivator Urban Meyer to get the team foaming at the mouth for this game next year? If they aren't already, that is. If this game is within 4 TDs I will be shocked.
If this game is within 7 touchdowns I'll be shocked.
What is this article about? Did something happen last September 6th? Don't seem to recall this.
I LOVE this game. Hated it when it happened, but without it, no one's telling our guys week after week after week that they're no good and don't belong. People say they want revenge; I say we send 'em a thank you for the kick in the mouth that woke up the team, forced the O line to gel, taught JT how to pick himself up, showed the team they could lose even before heading to MSU, and, in the end, didn't do any lasting harm to the season.
That said, still want to see the Bucks leave Blacksburg with a 50 point win.
I honestly thought Urban might invite Frank Beamer as his guest to the Championship Game, and call him up onto the victory stage to say, "Without Frank's team showing these kids their weaknesses, we would not be here tonight."
(it was a dream, prolly a Tequila-induced coma)
“Save yourself and relax during every game. I recommend a fine bourbon.”
I don't think it's close on Monday Night Football next year. As was mentioned in the Navy write-up, we spent an inordinate amount of time prepping for that triple option while VT's entire offseason focus was this game. Sept 6 was really the only bad taste left in the mouth of the guys on this team, and they're bound to want to exact some revenge in an early road test. I can't wait, I'm going to the game...
What I remembered most of all was Brewer making EVERY throw on third down. Just insanely "this guy will be in the NFL" good throws. Under pressure. Had terrible flashbacks to last year.
I agree. His receivers made great catches as well.
Lol I can't explain the level of beating that is going to happen this Sept. Hokies be ready...
Earle for MOD in 16', it'll be the last best thing to ever happen to him.
Everyone always wants to be the first to knock us off..."we beat the Bucks"...think of it. What it says, be'n the one pebble that puts Goliath down. In one sense connect it to The Game, for the ya-hoos out there it makes there season if only to be 1-11. Now we have NChampions tattooed across this team they dream of add 'n to their trophyless-season.
We be #1...& gonna be the King of the Mtn. for yrs. to come. See'ya saban. Forget it Hairball. All these diamond-recruits are proof!
Gonna be a good-looong run of fun for YRS to come, we just started, for all the wanna-be, nvr-will-be's:
It Ain't happen'n...its our Dynasty...
tOSU UFM Ballers are here to STAY!
Brewer made ridiculous, RIDICULOUS third down throws. I mean, right on the money when the money should have been five feet away. Somehow, each and every damn time, their receivers would come down with improbable catches. Ohio State was getting good penetration but would miss by a half a second sometimes. Even one of those not happening would have changed the game.
I think Ohio State embarrasses VT in September. Something like 66-14.
Roast Hokie on the menu this year boys...
Thank the Maker that I was born in Ohio, cradle of coaches, US Presidents, confederate-stomping Generals, and home of The Ohio State University Football Buckeyes- 2014 UNDISPUTED National Champions!
They blitzed the shit out of our sophomore O-line and freshman QB, made miraculous play after miraculous play on offense, and came away with a win. It's a defensive scheme that no one tries because a veteran team can burn you with it.
VaTech will have no answers for the Buckeyes in September. I doubt they score a single point.
"The only good thing about it is winning the d*** thing" - Urban Meyer on The Game The War
The CFP committee called the loss an Albatross. Well, and Albatross in golf is a Double Eagle (a score of two on a par five) - even more impressive than a hole-in-one. E + R = O
Hard to believe the same team we watched hammer the opposition in the BCG, the Sugar Bowl and in the NCG could not beat this Va Tech team. Hard to believe that they improved that much in 105 days. Just very hard.
But , as Confucius says, " Man who goes to sleep with hard problem, often awake with solution in hand."
Losing is certainly painful, but often, with the right mental approach, much more can be learned from failure than success. There is no doubt in my mind that the VT game is a perfect example of this.
Indeed, that which does not kill you, will make you stronger.....
We went to the BIG 10 game at Indy, last year, to see them lose and again, to the VT game, my wife said that we cannot go to another game, we are the jinx. I too look for a real SMASH mouth game against VT next year, and will revel in a very lopsided score...
72-0 ( I don't know why that score makes me smile. Maybe Mark May does... )
Will we return a punt for a TD with 8 on the field too?
I would have this playing on a loop in MayDay's prep room.
Best part of this article is going back and reading everyones hatin comments on the archived links.
Wow, perspective changes everything.
Thanks for not firing Fickell or Herman, thanks for not benching JT or the o line, thanks for not giving up 5 losses and trying to hire Nadurzzi.
I can't wait to watch the Buckeyes take the field in Blacksburg. There will be blood.
On a related note, I spent a year as a geo-bachelor in DC. I had never considered VT fans to be a particularly noteworthy fanbase, they never seemed worth even considering one way or the other. I have to say, all fanbases has some jackasses but theirs really has some virulent morons. I have since met some of the good fans but between the DC experience and the game last year I am really, really going to enjoy rolling into that town with the Buckeye hordes before watching the hokies getting rolled up on the field.
This is my first time commenting on a post that I didn't read.
Only congrats I receive would be for successfully recovering from the effects of that particular game. But thanks, I guess.
I remember wondering, not knowing much about J.T. yet, why they wouldn't try Cardale in there for a bit. I thought, surely he can't be that bad can he? Obviously we know the answer to that but in the end we all have to accept that this game might have had to happen the way it was or the team might not have learned enough from it in order to become champions. Strange twists of fate all over this season. Man I want to watch the movie. I wish I knew how to direct it myself - I would totally do that!
The kickoff out of bounds after tying it was big. There were quite a few special team bumps, especially early in the season. I think the play of the year that turned it around was the one made by Coach Schlegel.
Tackling Technique 101
One slight benefit to the Tech loss strikes me after being reminded of it. Can you imagine a bigger motivator for this entire off season than opening the schedule with the chance to avenge that loss? I think it will make the Buckeyes that much hungrier this off season, knowing they can really erase that bad memory with a big game in the opener. Much better than the more typical mid-major that doesn't get anyone excited.
The sky was falling after this one... I had won tickets through the alum lottery and gave them to my sister in Cleveland, since I couldn't make it (in NY), and she was texting me how deflating it was, but boy was I glad I didn't spend money for a plane and hotel for that night... I believe this game also marked the beginning of the chant to get rid of the alt unis. I believe PSU was the last time we wore those unlucky threads.
"I don't apologize for anything. When I make a mistake, I take the blame and go on from there." - Woody Hayes
I had accepted the loss and even forgot about it, especially in the glory of winning the National Championship, but I decided to rewatch the game and just got pissed off and depressed. September 7th cannot get here fast enough.
"I call them That School Up North because I hate them."-Woody Hayes
I was talking to someone about this the other week and I think VT got REEEALLLLLY lucky on when that game was scheduled. they caught OSU at probably the worst they were all season. Had that game been played later on in the season I'm not sure the outcome would have gone in their favor.
"¯\_(ツ)_/¯" - Joey Bosa
Can't wait for the revenge game. 12 gauges are good for hunting turkeys too.
