Big factors here. Would really increase our odds if we can have them out there. This team knows the meaning of next man up though
Great news - the more weapons the better. At the least it gives Oregon more they have to scheme for ahead of time...
"Because we couldn't go for three"
Absolutely. I wonder how 'probable' they actually are, though. I'd expect Meyer to say the same thing even if he knew they weren't gonna play, just to give Oregon more to think about.
Might as well throw in JT Barrett and Braxton Miller as "probable" too :P
Heuerman will have a chance to come up big. I can feel it. Him and Vannett could be the heroes of this game.
"The only good thing about it is winning the d*** thing" - Urban Meyer on The Game The War
I've been saying that for every Ohio State game since I've started watching them in 1997. Monday is going to be the day though!
I sure hope so; the long ball is flying and the ground game is rolling. One would think this can create oportunities for the TE. I bet their athleticism will play a big role in the protection with the WebFoot's quick D-line, it would just ne cool to see our TEs show up in the stat line.

All hands on deck.
and we're bringing serious firepower
Man, it would be awesome to have Dontre back. What a great target for Jones to open up the short pass game.
"Football is, after all, a wonderful way to get rid of your aggressions without going to jail for it."-Woody Hayes
As much as Dontre could be useful... I personally think that him and Cardale are not even a remotely good QB/receiver match. Dontre has improved his catching, but its still far from impressive. Cardale is a good passer but throwing to a guy who is still developing his receiving skills, its just not a combination I feel is that strong to me.
Dontre wouldn't be used to throw downfield...he'd be used for swing passes, screens, etc. He's an H-back. Not a wide receiver. They aren't going to be putting Dontre in a position to catch a 40 yard pass over a defender. Dontre catches passes to get him in space with a blocker or two to use his speed and agility.
that might be what they use Dontre for, but Marshall runs plenty of deep crossing my routes. The H Back position is used as a WR plenty.
"Great moments are born from great opportunities." - Herb Brooks
They're can be different uses for the H-back. Wilson is more of a running back playing the position, while Marshall is more of a wide receiver playing the position. OSU is smart enough to use each of their strengths. Wilson isn't as effective as a wide receiver as marshall is.
The long catch against Mich St where he broke his foot begs to differ...
I remember a lot of us speculating whether or not he could even throw a deep ball and that seems to have worked out pretty well lol. The point is, if that connection can be made, it could open up a lot of field. Jalin has definitely developed into a receiver that can do anything, but lately he's been utilized as a more mid-range receiver. Dontre's speed can really spread the defense thin and gain us a lot of yards. We've seen that a lot this year. Bringing in Dontre on some sweeps and screens could definitely put another wrinkle into what's sure to be a really stressful day for Oregon's defense.
Man, it would be awesome to have Dontre back. What a great target for Jones to open up the short pass game.
Ha! I don't know if Cardale can even fire the cannons short enough for a Dontre Wilson pass. (I kid, king Cardale can do anything he damn well pleases!)
One day I will valiantly become a political prisoner of 11W jail.
Marshall and Vannett played well, but I would sure like to have all of our weapons against Plucky Duck.

Heuerman must've really been in pain if it kept him off the field vs. Bama because wild horses would have to drag him off if he were healthy. I really hope he can tough it out but even the strongest of us have pain tolerances. I STILL believe Dontre is due for a big game. Keeping my fingers and toes crossed.
"You're the patron saint of the totally effed" - Hot Tub Time Machine
Agreed about wilson. To be fair to him though, barrett under threw him wide open down field at least 3 maybe 4 times this year or we'd be talking about him as a big playmaker more.
No way Heuerman misses this game. The Jake Ballard play against Oregon, anyone? Anyone? Maybe Jeff comes up huge with a big play as well!
Didn't like the dynasty quote from Tre.
Need everyone to play within themselves & not try to play heroball. Especially a guy who has not been in the mix -- I worry that #2 will try a little too hard to make a play and forget about ball security...
Sounds great as long as Marshall still sees plenty of playing time.
I don't think it will be an either-or situation. Split Marshall out wide (so he can either catch as a WR or run a jet sweep) and put Wilson at RB. Thats a lot of speed.
They play the same position. I don't think they are going to take Smith, Thomas, or Spencer off of the field to move Marshall so Dontre can play. Fact is that Marshall has become what Dontre was hyped up to be. It's good to have depth and all, but that's all dontre should add coming off of this injury.
Maybe Thomas or Spencer come out for some plays so that Dontre AND Marshall can be utilized simultaneously. Both of those guys can really create some defensive confusion and/or matchup problems.
I would rather have Spencer and Thomas in the game before Dontre.
Marshall > Dontre and it's not close.
Devin Smith and Michael Thomas don't recreate match up problems??? Watch replays of the last 2 games and reconsider.
You're going to take one of Ohio State's 2 best WRs off the field, Devin Smith or Michael Thomas?
minus punt returns.
I don't believe Jalin made a good decision on any of his punt returns against Alabama. Fair caught a ball at the five. Ran away from a ball that hit at the fifteen. Leaping fair catch at the 8 yard line. Seems like he doesn't call guys off quickly enough. Was too short on the first punt and too deep on the second.
I know he is a great athlete, but he isn't extraordinarily fast. He is quick. He seems to have good hands but he makes me nervous every single time.
Not disagreeing on Jalin, but Dontre is just as scary on PR and is a lot less effective at returning it. I would prefer to see either Smith or Spencer line up at PR when it looks like the kick will be landing inside the 15.
I agree. Maybe he will be all conference as a senior, while making no mistakes. CB didn't do so well last year in the bowl game either.
I didn't even realize Heuerman was inactive for Bama - oops - was just thinking they never dialed up any plays his way. On that note, did Vannett play either? We did well without big TE action; wondering if Urban will utilize them vs Oregon?
"Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity..." -John Muir
Yep - Vannett had a huge 18 yard catch on the last drive of the first half (that ended with the Spencer pass). He's been decent this year, but having Heuerman would be much better.
He wasn't inactive, he just didn't play much and was limping around a couple of times
I'd have to be dead to miss the National Championship Game.. And even then I'd find a way to make sure we win #GoBucks

Trust me, I'm a lawyer.
Didn't know jeff was hurt .. Maybe I can recall seeing more nick .. Nick sure had some nice blocks
"To The House"
He left limping after the first play.
I know he doesn't get a lot of targets, but IMO Heuerman is the best TE in the country. Would be a huge plus to run block and TE passing game. Hope they both get out there if they are healthy.
Am I the only one nervous about dontre returning...?
Nope, it worries me as well. Like someone said above, I'm worried he'll try to fit 5(?) weeks of missed football into one game and wind up making mental mistakes. I'm happy with Marshall and Samuels.
Nope nervous and excited all at the same time. Hope he holds on to the ball a bit tighter than the MSU game he did catch a nice TD with a busted foot to his credit
Having him back gives us options. It's not like he's going to start over Marshall. Good grief Marshall has been a beast. The receptions he made and the hits he took against bama, without coughing it up mind you, were amazing. He got hammered at least three times and bounced up before the guy that hit him. Some of those hits his helmet ended up 15 yds downfield. No way Dontre starts over Marshall.
"The future is bright at Ohio State." - Urban Meyer 1/1/15
I totally agree. IMHO Dontre should only come in to spell Marshall, not in place of him. Marshall is much closer to the real Percy Harvin.
I just would hate to see a well-oiled machine falter by adding a new dimension during the NCG. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Now if Marshall and the short passing game is struggling I am totally fine implementing a new weapon. I love Dontre to death but our offense has been rolling...just use him when needed don't force anything
...Because I couldn't go for 3
Don't be.....they will have a handful of plays or a package that has him and Marshall in at the same time and they will get him the ball in a space a few times and that will be it.....they aren't going to ask him to play the entire game or do more than he can handle right now be glad that they have one more weapon to use at strategic times
^ best post ever ^
Dontre Flipped from Oregon as we all remember, Im sure he would love to put the dagger in them! That being said I wouldnt take EzE off the field unless he needs a breather. Him, Marshall, and Zeke on field same time would be electric
A little is better than nada, sometimes you want the whole enchilada
How nice would it be to see D. Smith, M. Thomas, J. Marshall and D. Wilson in the spread with Zeke in the backfield with Cardale for a few plays?
I would upvote my own comment if allowed
It's time for Dontre's kickoff return. Crank that spin move, my man!
P U M P E D!!
"Gardner-- Right side.. IT'S INTERCEPTED, OHIO STATE INTERCEPTS IT! ... Tyvis Powell saves the season!"
Punt returns as well. Jalin is waaaaay too cavalier with the ball on PRs.
Somebody floated the idea of Cardale going pro if he wins the NC. I don't know. If I'm an NFL team, I'm thinking we could do worse than develop this guy. (LOOKING AT YOU BROWNS)
Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.
Cardale stated on Tuesday that he's for sure coming back (along with Taylor Decker).
Id dontre would just field punts i would consider that a win. Jalin makes me nervous as hell back there.. Catching balls over his head, fair catches on the five, not even being back there. Its a little like russian roulette right now with him. Although it seems like jalin has more moves, i think they need reliability moreso than big plays at this point.
Idk...Dontre's last outing on kick returns wasn't exactly a stress free situation.
Lol, good point. Forgot about that.
The one he caught off the bounce in the Sugar Bowl almost gave me a heart attack!
A healthy Dontre is a bonus, a nice wrinkle. But our core will continue to carry us. Spencer, Thomas, smith, Zeke, cardale...must I go on))
Having Dontre back and contributing would be fantastic. Marshall, Thomas, Spencer, Devin Smith, and now Wilson to think about out on the edge. Not to mention "headhunter" Corey Smith contributing. The last two games, we've had like a half-dozen skill players, playing their best career ball. Devin's deadly on the deep ball, even with everyone on the planet knowing that it's coming. Spencer throws one of the best TD passes of the post-season and has been clutch as a receiver and blocker. Mike Thomas has been doing whatever it takes to move the chains and snag every pass near him Marshall has been clutch across the middle. Elliott is like a slightly smaller, definitely faster Carlos Hyde. Jones is making good decisions, laser-like throws, and showing good ball security. Win or lose on Monday, the last dozen games, especially the last two, has been a run to remember.
"Woody would have wanted it that way"
True 'dat on Cardale but he does scare me with the way he holds on to the ball too long especially deep near his own endzone. At the same time, I'm impressed with his decision making by throwing the ball away other times.
This is good. All weapons are cleared to fire....
Yahoo is reporting wilson was on the sideline with a walking boot at practice.
Ohio State plays the Ducks next Monday at 8:30 p.m. at AT&T Stadium in North Texas.
these little blurbs always crack me up.
The down vote is a mighty tool. Use it on idiots, not differing opinions.
The more weapons we have available the better. Nearly everybody should have an opportunity to contribute - but I trust they'll ease Dontre back in to the mix.
Jeff, on the other hand, has been playing - and he's a senior. I hope he gets a chance to really shine in his last game as a Buckeye -

Would love to see Wilson play against the team he verbally committed to... show them why he chose THE Ohio State University.
yes, I'm still alive
I hope that everyone will be as healthy as possible, for this game because this is it,THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!!!!!!
Such a problem ... having Dontre Wilson and Jalin Marshall both available.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
Next year we have to lament a Qb competition between Braxton, J.T., and Cardale.
We'll need Dontre, the 1,000 yards rushing the Buckeyes are going to rack up on Oregon will be tiring for Zeke, Marshall, and Samuel alone.
Be great to see Dontre field punts at the very least. We need some help there.
Having Dontre back would be huge for the WildBuck plays with Jalin taking the snaps. Now, you can run Dontre on the Jet Sweep, and have EZE next to Jalin as well for another option, or Jalin can take off (and perhaps throw).
