I refer to him as The Cardale Jones, and future 2014 Playoff MVP.
Thank the Maker that I was born in Ohio, cradle of coaches, US Presidents, confederate-stomping Generals, the Uncomparable Joe Burrow, and home of The Ohio State University Buckeyes- 2014 UNDISPUTED National Champions!
12 Gauge will be locked and loaded for sure. I wonder if that is his real nickname or one the Fox broadcasters made up.
"To be the man you've gotta beat the man and just when you think you have all the answers, I change the question." The Nature Boy, Ric Flair
Pretty sure that the announcers said it was a team given nickname.
That's what I remember too - said the team gave it to him.
Well, considering that Cardale sports an artillery piece for an arm, 12 guage isn't an appropriate nickname.
- Imo, Cardale's nickname should be something like, "Crotale" Jones (Crotale is a type of mobile missile platform)... Or, "Minuteman" Jones (This is especially fitting considering that the term Minuteman signifies both an I.C.B.Missile and the guy who was ready at a minutes notice to lead his unit to greatness).... There are much better nicknames than one that refers to a short-range and non accurate fire-arm. This is the kid-with-the-cannon that we all are counting on to lead us to the promised ONLY land.
GoBucks, and may the odds be ever in your favor.
Urban Meyer >Jim Harbaugh for ever and ever, Amen. 0
Yeah, but when Cardale gets within close range of you, he destroys you by running through you, jumping over you, or throwing and brushing off the hit you were trying to make on him as if you weren't there at all. Oh, and lets not forget what he does if one of his receivers happens to fumble...
I think 12 gauge is a perfectly acceptable name.
Your signature will be publicly displayed at the end of your comments.
Minuteman Jones...that's seriously perfect!

Yes but "M198 Howitzer" doesn't roll off the tongue quite as easily

What an awesome article.
Excellent work, Ramzy.
..."it means the Buckeyes are not going away no matter what happens..."
Wouldn't mind kicking off the year with a couple of very stout wins, but 2015 looks like it's going to be much fun, folks.
Go get 'em, Cardale.

Next man up
I don't remember a Buckeye team this deep... Next man up is easy to say, but harder to make real. 11 starters on this team that are Frosh, Redshirt Frosh or Sophmores... future is bright and those that have stepped in have real game experience which rarely happend under Coach T.
Just two years ago we were wondering if we could field an entire starting lineup. Now we have depth everywhere. quality depth in multiple positions, except now QB.

Truly remarkable, UFM has really outdone himself. Two more wins in the next month and I will be in such hysterics I may never recover.
Yeah, if we win the National Title this year I may have to have plastic surgery to remove my smile.
“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” – Theodore Roosevelt
Yep. That was my source.
And we're STILL recruiting at such a high level. These are the days I so looked forward to when UFM was announced as the head coach. I told every one of my SEC fans to watch out, tOSU will be like nothing they have ever seen before!
This article is EXACTLY why Urban Meyer deserves to take home some Coach of the Year awards.
"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any other one thing." - Abraham Lincoln
Cardale is the starter, he knows it, and he played like it against Wisconsin. Don't even care what happens next year right now, because it's clear that the order on the depth chart doesn't really matter anything like it used to. I respect the crap out of him and the rest of the team for playing out of their minds when they had the perfect excuse to back down. I think they will have the right blend of confidence (but not cockiness) and energy going into the Sugar Bowl to win.
...and Michigan still sucks.
I want to be going down a waterslide right now.
...Because I couldn't go for 3
Great Points. This is deeper than just next man up...it's a combo of recruiting, and coaching. The 3's have to be just as capable as the 1's. The difference in talent level can't be extreme. Urban (and Herman to an extant) has shown he's a master of this. But let us not forget Cardale was a Tressel recruit. It's almost poetic.
This is that blurry line between coaching and teaching. The depth of Cardale's mental toughness and commitment are big reasons behind his success in Indy, and going forward.

And there's that.
Nailed it Ramzy! This team is so stocked with talent it should be illegal. And the funny thing is, Urban is going out and getting more. The future is so bright I'm having a hard time containing myself. Go Bucks! Beat EVERYONE!
“Ain’t life grand when you finally hit it!” DLR
You'd better beat us this year if you plan to anytime soon.
"you can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning"
You didn't even mention another key loss: Jamal Marcus was supposed to be Noah Spence's backup after filling in for him very well at the Orange Bowl, but ended up leaving the team. So Steve Miller is also the 3rd string
Or, Steve Miller is a starter
Yep, Miller could've been goin into the season as 2nd or 3rd string, as a senior, and was a highly sought 5 star recruit himself in high school. The cupboard is CHOCK FULL of talent at THE Ohio State University!
One small fact about Cardale's history Ramzy didn't mention, he played in the last State Championship game Cleveland Glenville was in (2009...as a sophomore). I've always thought he was the better QB as far as size, but Herman/Meyer's system seems to function more efficiently with a faster QB (Miller and Barrett). I have a feeling we'll see more North and South running from CJ, after faking the inside run to EzE. IMO, the OSU coaches looked at film and noticed that Cardale doesn't run so well East and West. Once that train starts to get going, look out Bama!
It is time!!!!!
Don't mean to directly criticize you, Chaz, but I really hate this theme that CJ doesn't run well "east and west", that he's more suited for "north and south". He hasn't had as many opportunities to show his running ability, but his 20 yd scamper against Wisky showed me that he has plenty of speed and ability to the outside. There are other examples, as well. This seems like one of those talking points that people lock onto, like "McMillan is much better than Grant and should be starting". The reality is, there's ability there, and I trust the coaches to make the decisions and utilize that ability to its fullest.
You need to excuse some of these posts. A lot of people think every Buckeye QB must have the speed and agility of Braxton Miller to be successful running the ball.
"The future is bright at Ohio State." - Urban Meyer 1/1/15
Watch the last game he played in...he fell down trying to run east and west. I just watched my Tivo'd B1G Championship game again last night after getting blasted on another thread just to make sure I wasn't too ____ when I watched it last. He doesn't look as good running in that direction, IMO. I also don't think he's nearly as fast as Bama's defensive players to be able to run east and west, in order to out run their players. Again, just my opinion, just as you're entitled to yours. I just don't see a 6'5 250 lb QB outrunning the likes of Bama's Lbs and Dlineme (especially their Dbs).
He should use his strength and size to run vertically. Plow the field ahead of him.
Saban on a cart eating cold pizza
I would agree that CJ is probably a much better north-south runner than laterally, i mean just look at him, he's 6'5 250+ ,so naturally yeah. Kind of has a Terrelle Pryor build to him a little bit. However, this statement here is incorrect and i want to clear this up...
"I have a feeling we'll see more North and South running from CJ, after faking the inside run to EzE"
First, it's not a fake, it's a read from the mesh point. The QB is reading a defender, it's not a pre-determine fake. Second, the call is an 'inside zone'. The back is the dive (north-south), which means the QB is the edge threat. You can't run north-south directly after the read on this play. The play isn't designed to do that. The QB would have to move laterally and get to the edge first before ever turning up field. Now on power read, or the inverted veer, the roles swap, and the QB now becomes dive player. Option 101 stuff, man.
Brutus is........The People's Champ!!!!
Top notch, Ramzy. You're absolutley right. There is no "third-string". Cardale is our quarterback. Period.
Long Live the King
all we need to know is that we have 3 of the top 10 qbs in the country!!
Don't DV me, but I cried at this beautiful article. Go Bucks.
These guys are the epitome of a "team". And that's probably largely due to the many obstacles they've overcome together. The blow-out of Wisconsin may now have them believing they can do anything. I know if I was on that team, that's exactly how I'd be feeling.
I'm probably seeing more doubt right here on 11W than there is in that locker room.
Sure - Wisky was one-dimensional on offense - but every team they beat on their way to winning the B1G West knew that, too. They don't suck. We just played that well in that game.
I had the feeling for about five or six weeks going in to that game that we were just a little tweak here or there from becoming a dominant defense. I also felt we were just a turnover here or a penalty there from an offensive explosion. I think they have a much better idea of what they'll need to do to play at a championship level now -
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement. - Will Rogers
We left at LEAST 14 Easy points laying around against Wisconsin
I really enjoyed this article!! Great read!!
I tend to agree on the fact that the most impressive aspect of the Meyer era so far, IMO, has been overall player development. The improvement in the players from week to week is very noticeable.
When Cardale was born, he slapped the doctor.
He slapped the doc as he was hurdling him.

Jesus could walk on water, but Cardale Jones can swim through land.
H1N1 gets Cardale vaccines.
Talk about displaying character and maturity? This "third string quarterback" is not a star struck 19 year old who went to his high school prom seven months ago. He voluntarily took a gray shirt, and went to Fork Union Military Academy. And, then he showed up. He lived through the fallout from "the tweet heard 'round the world". And, he's still here. He famously "couldn't get out of his own way", in the words of Urban Meyer. And, he's still here. He lost the starting job after Braxton went down, which I'm sure he felt was rightfully his. And, he's still here. So, when people ask me what I think our third string quarterback can really accomplish against Alabama's defense I simply say "you'll see", because the truth, in my opinion, is simply this - whatever he wants, because he's still here.
^^^^ This all day. Well said.
Who was that guy that said "those that remain will be champions"?
Maybe he was on to something.
Well, it was a Woody Hayes protégé...
Seriously, what a "problem" to have. Testimony to the teaching/coaching that is happening once these guys get on campus. How much fun is it to be a Buckeye right now?!
Cardale Jones, Cardale Jones, Cardale Jones. Kid is having fun and so is this team- proving the doubters wrong. Let's keep it going!
He will be 3-0 as a starter this season. Oh yeah
Great article. It points to tOSU's coaching staff's ability to teach, develop and coach the talent they have.
I see tOSU moving up from the 'scarlet' to the 'grey' on this chart.

Only reason we are not on the other side of that chart is the Luke Fickell year.
Cardale played extremely well against WI in the conference title game, and we just need him to play within himself against AL. I am sure that the coaches have the game plan in place. This is one very exciting team!
I can't get enough of Cradle Jones, I think he should play both ways he can QB and deliver the pain.
Did you know that the guy he tackled (#2) was a high school classmate of his?
Yes indeed, that would be V'Angelo Bentley.
I think this is maybe my favorite Cardale highlight of all. It just seethes with what this guy is about.
MAybe he should be playing both ways... LB?!? Best hit I have seen from a QB since Andy Luck at Stanford.
I will never forget, as long as I live, hearing Gus Johnson yelling "12 Gauge Baby" when he threw that TD to Spencer...
"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, you are a leader." -John Quincy Adams
What is the game clock when Gus yells the "12 gauge" comment? I still have the game on the DVR and want to hear it again!
Found it! It is at about 9:25 in the 3rd quarter.
This has been the most fun season to watch from start to finish. Sure VT stung, but it made everything after from that game on even more entertaining to watch. Can't wait to get to Nola! I'll be on the plane there in exactly 2 weeks!
With a UFM offense a team needs multiple QB's because of the injury factor.
We'll remember this season for years and years! I'm making my plans for Texas-
Montana Silver Bullet
I had a seemingly strange confidence about the B1G Championship game. Everything in my head thought we wouldn't and yet everything in my heart said we would. After the decimation of Wisconsin all I could feel and think was that this is a team of destiny that can do anything.
Did anyone else notice that in the article's caption photo, Cardale seems to be taking some advice from a tiny green-clad Leprechaun?
Ha! I went back to the top of the page and looked at the photo, and you are exactly correct!
BTW -- I am watching the OSU-WISC game again as I type. The endorphins just keep coming!
Cardale is the MAN. Now it's time to show people that you and your hard worked got you there. One game at a time.
I may not be the sharpest crayon in the box but I'm one of the most colorful.
For the 1,000th time: 14-1.
What about the 2004 Alamo bowl. Justin Zwick got the start because Troy smith got suspended for dental work. Teddy Ginn also split with justin at QB. Tress beat up Les Miles and OK state 33-7. Talk about backup QB.!,,
I like to think the next-man-up briefing goes down something like this (*apologies for non-HD quality):
1, 2, and 3; shoot maybe even 4, 5, and whomever the heck 6 might be. There are 100 teams in the FBS that dream of having just one of our many talented quarterbacks to lead their team. Cardale is our starter and he is an amazing QB. I am thankful for what Braxton and J.T. did for us. I can't wait to see them healthy and playing again. But, right now, I am very excited to see Cardale throwing huge distances to our receiving corps. He is the Ohio State QB and I could not be happier with having him.
When I asked my friend Travis, "Would you rather play a game for OSU and score a touchdown, or have the Buckeyes win the National Championship?" He immediately said, "National Championship, no question." That is a true fan.
Espin always talks about SEC depth on their teams, yet no team in the nation can claim what we have done with our back up and "third string" QB. We don't talk depth we exemplify what true depth is... Next Man Up U!
We don't have backups at The Ohio State University, we have more starters
