Right ankle being reported.

I'm thinking it has to be a high ankle sprain. Silence from OSU is a good thing because if there was a fracture or break, they would know with X-rays rather quickly.

When I was 6 I was thinking about this rivalry. This one is seared on your soul, It's ingrained through every part of your body. -Urban Meyer

HS
WildBear Buckeye's picture

Going forward Meyer and Hermann will have to re-evaluate how much they run their main QB. How about letting Marshall throw a few safe passes, so that you can line him up and make the opposing defense respect the pass? Otherwise you're playing with this kind of fire all the time.

HS
THE's picture

Agree.  Most QBs really are not built and/or conditioned to take that pounding.

Really makes me sick about Barrett. He's had such a magical run this far.

I know.  What do they think is going to happen when they keep running our QB up the middle!  We have to many weapons to not use them.  I'm really upset with their decisions to overuse him.  Most importantl though just get well JT.  That's all that matters.

HS

He had the option to pitch the ball. He chose to keep it himself. It doesnt mattet how much a qb runs or doesnt run it can happen on any play.

And then I told her...i'm no weatherman, but tonight's forecast is calling for several inches!

HS
OSUStu's picture

How about we just get Marshall involved early (or at all) after he just had a 4 TD performance? Then they have to respect that sweep.

HS

That play was an option. Our entire running game is either QB leads, QB counters, or an option: inside/outside zone reads, speed option, etc.. It's not a play choice. It is a philosophy. When the QB is a possible carrier, you get an extra blocker, and in the case of option, another player is left unblocked and is occupied by the option. So, play-side, you'll have 4 on 3 with 1 of them dealing with the option. They can sneak a safety in, but that's when you pull it and throw over the top. There are no alternatives. We could stop running all together, I guess...

Maybe you didn't watch the replay, but his ankle was pointing in the opposite direction of the rest of his leg. It was gruesome, no chance it's minor...I feel so badly for him. What a tough dude that has been lights out this year. Hopefully it's just a few months of rehab and recovery and he'll be back to himself, but damn.

I don't know anything about body injuries, but from what I could see, it wasn't 'gruesome' as the announcers said. How bad do you think it looked?!

HS
NorCal Buckeye's picture

Bingo.  I've been saying this since the QB controversy started.  To have two extremely dynamic, top notch players capable of playing like Braxton and JT can it's not only amazing but necessary with this type of QB run-heavy offense.

I'm just disgusted by Herman.  He'll run every QB we have into the ground for his own ends.  His garbage play calling is the reason JT is hurt.  I wish he'd jsut fuck off and go take a shitty head coaching job somewhere.  4 td's last week and. marshall touches the ball twice.  POS.

HS

This isn't Herman buddy, this is the offensive style that Meyer brought with him.  Fickell & Walrus were doing the same with Braxton.  It's what they do with dynamic runners.

He didn't run much with Leak, and Tebow was the size of a defensive end.

We have two quarterbacks that were hurt as a direct result from running.

you don't have to have your quarterback run constantly to be successful, they just have to be a threat to run to make the defense account for them.

It was a football play that happened in a football game. Barrett made the read and decided to keep the ball instead of giving it to Marshall.

A real shame he was injured and I wish him a full and quick recovery.

J.T. Barrett is a great player with a bright future. Hopefully this is only a minor setback.

Just saw an MD on Twitter saying that a frame-by-frame analysis looks like it's a severe high ankle sprain. Anyone familiar with the timetable on that injury?

EDIT: sorry for the shitty embed:

@DaveMSiebert: JT Barrett replay shows severe high-ankle sprain. Vacuum splint means concern for a fracture/dislocation component. Hate this. #MICHvsOSU

HS
Notor's picture

If that's the case it's basically like breaking your leg.

HS
NorCal Buckeye's picture

Sprain is not the same as a leg break.  Even a severe sprain.

Depending on severity (and if there is ligament/tendon damage) it could be short or long.

HS
Notor's picture

He said it was a severe high ankle sprain. That would make the severity "severe" and would be essentially the same thing as a break. Best case is he's back for a bowl game but I don't think that happens unless we make the playoffs.

HS
Zimmy07's picture

We're in a bowl for sure, just which one is TBD.

HS
SoCalBuck26's picture

If it's a ligament tear, then rehab is gonna be a couple of months.  I tore a ligament in my wrist while trying to land a 360 while snowboarding and it took about 2 months after surgery just to be able to lift 5lbs consistently with my wrist.  Granted i'm not an elite athlete, so I'm sure rehab time could be quicker with all the resources they have available.  Hope JTB gets well soon!!!!

HS
brandonbauer87's picture

From what I've seen other guys have, he'd be unlikely but not out for a bowl/playoff.

HS
NorCal Buckeye's picture

Wow, hope it's not a break or dislocation.  That vacuum split does seem to indicate a more severe issue, though I'm hoping it's largely preventative.

High ankle sprains can take 4-6 weeks

HS
Buckeyeplumber's picture

Some take longer to heal than a break.

HS
cplunk's picture

As someone whose had several high ankle sprains, a dislocated ankle, and a broken ankle during my soccer days, I can tell you the severe high ankle sprain took the longest to recover from by far. Wasn't even close. Took over a year to be back to speed.

Obviously, though, every injury is different. Hoping JT's is as minor as is possible and he has a speedy recovery.

HS
a3gill's picture

Playing the result much?

That play, along with 80% of our other running plays, is an option. The other 20% are designed QB keeps. We should stop doing all that, right?

When armed with the outcome, questioning play calling is ridiculous. If you or I were to tweet something about offensive play calling and Urban were to correct what was said, everyone in the world would consider his correction to be correct over the point made in the original tweet, whether right or wrong. Why then, are people so quick to think they know better than the coach with the highest active winning percentage, that spent the last week getting paid a lot of cash to prepare to call plays?

I didn't hear any complaints when J.T. took the same play 86 yards against Minnesota.

Put in Brax.

Kidding obviously, but I will say this:

I really hope JT is ok. He has stepped up as a tremendous leader and has done so much for this young team.

Additionally, I now have the utmost respect for Gardner after what he did on the field when JT went down. If he can put the rivalry aside to make sure our QB is ok, we should certainly all be able to put the rivalry side for a moment and appreciate him doing that.

HS
Zimmy07's picture

We are red shirting Collier.  I still think Jones can be a lot more dangerous than people think.

HS

Cardale was first replacement up until a week before Brax was hurt.

He'll be fine.

HS
jbirmmd's picture

I doubt we'll see JT again this year. Hope I'm wrong. As I said elsewhere, the shame is that happened because JT made the wrong choice on the read option, which he'd played so well all year. His reads were actually pretty poor all day.

HS
OutInOneDroppedTwoHittin'Three's picture

I said the same thing.... He makes the proper read its an OSU 1st down and he is still playing.

HS
12egulator's picture

I understand this offense utilizes the talents of running QB's....but I think it should be a matter of CONTEXT. Why a routine 2nd and 1 requires a QB run as opposed to Ezekiel powering forward is beyond me.

HS
a3gill's picture

You know that is an option, right?

HS

If J. T. is gone, I suppose the committee will not want to put OSU in the playoff regardless.

J.T. was successful, in part, because of the amount of talent around him. Cardale can be successful in different ways as long as he distributes the ball. Also, I read a Tweet saying an MRI on his ankle is underway. If it's an ankle, even broken, he could be back before playoffs. So, I doubt the committee will dock them.

No idea the extent of the injury but the eye test says he's definitely not playing next week. Possibly bowl game. I'd say that will keep us out of the playoffs but.....this defense is not national championship quality. I'd rather win a bowl game that take a beat down from Bama as the 4 seed   It just makes all these underclass men that much hungrier.

Who knows, but the look of the play I would suggest broken fibula and ankle. Thankfully Urban has played the JT/Braxton talks the way he has. Recovering from that injury, if it is so, it is a long road. I had the same injury in a CFB game tackling a guy and a lineman lunging at my legs and my cleat didn't give from the turf. 13yrs later, I am still not the same. Horrible inury.

Anybody blaming Tom Herman or Urban Meyer for JT's injury needs to be evaluated by a psychiatrist. Are you seriously questioning running the QB on 2nd down? If he would have scored, you would probably think he was a genius. I would elaborate further, but it is obviously above your mental capacity.

Best wishes to JT for a speedy and full recovery. Definitely looked like a broken leg of some sort.

I confess, after that THE game last season, I kinda liked Gardner.  I always measure wins against the quality of the adversity and the opponents.  To me, beating this team is always a quality win and players like Gardner contribute regardless of their individual statistics.  It's the big reason the B1G will always be the best conference, imo.

It is a bit grating to see him run 15 to 20 times a game, that being said this is how the QB works in Urban's system. They wouldn't be where they are without him doing that, so, take the good with the bad. Very classy of Gardner to go out there though. As much as I despise Michigan, aside from Bosa's one bonehead move, a well played game. Next man up Cardale.  Throw in about 10 plays with Marshall in wildcat, maybe even a pass. Also, WHY IS RAEKWON NOT PLAYING EVERY SINGLE F-#KING PLAY? Enough with this subbing crap. Every play he is in, good stuff happens, needs to be on the field all the time.

fansince77

HS
EtTuBrute's picture

Very true, some additional QB contact is going to happen with this style of offense.  Cardale obviously wasn't recruited for this offense and hasn't had the practice reps so much.  Nevertheless, the fact that he's such a big, tough guy will stand him and the Bucks in good stead over the next couple of games, as I'm sure our offensive scheme is going to be a conservative pound-it style.

All college QB's are expected to run a fair amount.  Its too easy to take advantage of inexperience and lack of skill when QB's scramble.  The pro systems o not have that lack of experience or lack of skill to cover a scramble.  This is why college uses running QB's.   It seems they do lean on the QB a bit much.  Jalin Marshall/Cardale could work...  Jalin Marshall might be the man, kid is off the fricking chain. Cardale has the power...

Great game!!! J.T. is the man!!! I hated to see him get hurt!!! Unfortunently we have had bad luck when it comes to injuries this year!!! Cardale is a good pro style offensive quarterback but Ohio State runs the spread offense!!!! We shall see!!!

F@#$ hate Devin but all the props in the world for showing some serious sportsmanship!  Hard to say anything bad for somebody who do that!

There was a JT/Braxton thread recently where someone touted JT's durability over Braxton and everyone failed to mention JT's historical injury. Yes, I realize this injury is completely unrelated to his old one but to tout his durability over Braxton's was always a wash. Both historically and because it's hard to stay healthy as a QB running the ball in this system all year long.

An emotional moment captured by USA Today. I did notice a Michigan player walk over to Barrett although I had no clue it was Gardner. Much respect.

I know Barrett requires surgery, but did he suffer a dislocated ankle?  For his sake, I hope not.  That is the same injury that Laquon Treadwell suffered a few weeks ago when he was tackled with a horse collar on the goal line.  It is a long road to recovery and it is possible that your ankle is not what it once was.  I hope that Barrett is lucky.

Gardner's going over and wishing Barrett well was very classy.

The reality is that both Braxton and JT are tremendous runners in very different ways.  It makes perfect sense our coaching staff has tried to utilize those talents though injury is certainly part of the equation.

Best wishes to JT with the surgery and recovery.  I miss him already but am also confident that Cardale will be ready next week.  Go Bucks!

Sadly enough -- the Game of Thrones game day poster is oddly appropriate.  JT Barrett's story book season could not have ended worse if George R. R. Martin had written it himself.

Thankfully he was not at a wedding.

.I'm only half joking -- or maybe I should say 'japing' as Tyrion would -- I feel terrible for JT as I'm sure everyone on this board does. But it's still better to laugh at misfortune than to cry.

Good luck to Cardale, and speedy recoveries to Braxton and JT.

I's amazing how much respect JT has earned throughout the course of the season.  His ability and character are outstanding.  I don't know if you could hear the fans chanting JT JT JT on the TV as they were tending to him on the field.  A fallen hero, who will be back.

Terrible injury, my younger brother suffered the same injury as JT to a lesser degree while at BGSU, its about 12 month's of recovery time on average, my brother came back in 9 months, but wasn't truly the same player until the next year, we will be lucky if he is ready by next year, but hopefully by then Braxton will be back & we can get use a MRS on JT, don't want to rush him back the kid has a bright future, wishing JT a full & speedy recovery...

Did anyone know why Kirk Ferentz was with JT on the golf cart?
