Put Dontre back on PR. Marshall made bad decisions against PSU. Expected that.

HS
jaxbuckeye's picture

Agree to disagree. I have much more faith in Mashall on PR. He just took over the position.  I think it's only a matter of time before he breaks one. Dontre never looked comfortable. I like Dontre as KR and Marshall as PR.

Marshall has had some good returns before. It wasn't his first game returning punts. I was just pointing out he lost the starting job because of his poor decisions against PSU. He might be the better of the two but he can't keep doing what he tried to do Saturday. When the ball is on the ground you get away from it probably 90% of the time on a punt.

HS
BROSEPH's picture

I think ball security and hands are more important than playmaking ability on punt returns.  Yeah, Jalin did some things that made me hold my breath, but I felt so much more comfortable with someone like him, a former quarterback and basketball player, than I did with Philly Brown and Dontre.

Don't forget ray smalls in there, gave me a damn heart attack every time he Tried to field a punt!

Warren Ball ahead of Dunn...is it safe to say Dunn is a bust?  Do you ever honestly see him getting any carries?  I'm not just talking about this year...I'm talking about ever.

HS
BassDropper's picture

Dunn has been hurt (may still be hurt), but yea it is safe to call him a bust. He can still have a successful career, but he was supposed to be a can't miss RB who had first round potential. He has not lived up to that potential yet. Probably never will to be honest. He's a hell of a special teams player and if given the opportunity I think he will do great (do to OSU's scheme). Hoping he can fill the goal line RB spot that Smith left behind.

Did I miss something?  I don't recall Dunn ever being a can't miss prospect. No offense to him, but I was never a big fan. Nothing ever stood out to me. Only my opinion though. Lord knows I'm no scout.

I thought it was more of a Urban Meyer keeping recruits from scUM and trying to steal his cousin from tsun. But i think Curtis Samuel has the highest upside anyway and is better as a freshman

Wherever you are, there you be!

HS
d5k's picture

Meyer confirmed Brionte is still hurt.  He and Ball would probably be a toss-up for the 3rd RB garbage time / emergency role.  Bust may still be premature as he has 2.5 years of eligibility left and at this point in Carlos Hyde's eligibility he was pouting on twitter about losing carries to Boom Herron and Jordan Hall.

HS

It's safe to call an injured redshirt sophmore a bust?

HS
Shangheyed's picture

Maybe not a bust, but is indeed worrisome that a true Soph and a true Freshman are in front of him on the depth chart.

He took last year off because he wasn't happy(was in the doghouse for a bit as a result, and might have not put forth good effort his redshirt year as well)...This year has turned it on, but still has not established himself in the pecking order according to class for two years in a row. Somehow that speaks to his issues whatever they maybe, reminiscent of other great athletes who maybe peaked in Highschool.

Maybe a switch of positions to TE?  But don't see him leapfogging back into the two deep when he heals... next two years included.

Is this sarcasm? A RB at TE at Ohio State?

It doesn't matter whether you're the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.

HS
Shangheyed's picture

Not sure if I was sarcastic at the time, just feel he is a good athlete and might be able to find space for him somewhere as it doesn't seem to be coming from his present position.   He would have to block bigger guys but would be a terror for LBs to cover.  Hope he turns it around as I prefer bigger backs like Hyde that if need be can control a game and the clock.

He could be that guy, but is clearly not there yet... just worry we are watching Rod Smith Part 2 (what if he switched to LB his Sophmore year)?   Maybe there is a different path for Dunn... or he has to turn it around in a very short time.

Maybe... just means Maybe... and I maybe crazy too, but there are RBs who have made the switch and we will have gaps in the 2 deep in the coming years (Baugh the only true TE going forward ).

Or Maybe I was being sarcastic... :-P

Dunn had very similar numbers as a freshman two years ago to what EZE had last year as a freshman. Dunn redshirted last year, si he has two more years to go. It seems effoert, or lack of, was an issue during the spring, but he was working hard enough to be "allowed" on special teams this year. Yes, he was a very big time recruit. I'm not ready to call him a bust yet as he still has those two years to go. Not sure why Ball is ahead on the depth chart.

Never understood the hype with Dunn. Average wheels, limited vision, and was called a power RB as a recruit. Regardless I'd say that Meyer simply doesn't like big backs. Even Hyde was supposed to be 2nd to Jordan Hall in 2012, despite Hyde being faster and holding a 40 pound weight advantage. Meyer is obviously a great coach but his understanding of RB's is his weakness.

"I hope they're last in everything". One of Meyer's comments when speaking of TTUN after being hired at Ohio State.

Guess all those rumors and speculations about Dontre and Corey Smith testing positive for drugs were false if they're still on the depth chart lol.

We were born to love Ohio State and hate that team up north.

HS
BassDropper's picture

I hope you're right, but the rumors that have been going around is that the results have not been released yet and Smith told the coaches because he knew he would fail.

With who? They're probably the best we have at this time for those positions. They seem like they are really good until they face a halfway decent D-line. Everytime they do they suck. Almost seems like were always scheming around our O-lines lack of size and experience but when we play good teams its just impossible to hide. I wish we had a couple Cam Robinsons and Laquan Treadwells setting around.

I've been saying the same thing Brojim. That kid runs with intensity and has attitude when he runs, plus he's has jets on those cleats. Hope to see MUCH more of him. If he gets into the open field, he's going to be hard to catch.

I agree.  Too bad he plays behind Zeke - but his game is becoming so complete, it's hard to take him out of the game for long.  Maybe a little time at H-back would be in order.

Elliott and Samuel in the same backfield would be scary.  And - it might help off-set some of our inconsistent o-line play.
