Wow definitely not expected, must have done something really bad to get the boot mid-season.
What the hell? So out of the blue..
"So out of the blue ordinary", you mean. Let's keep it clean on here.
We don't give a Da*n for the whole state of *ichigan cause we're from OHIO!
Uh, not sure where your head is at, but the idiom has no raunchy connotations that I know of. See below, from ExploreABC.com:
Meaning and origin of ‘Out of the blue’
When something happened suddenly and unexpectedly, we say it happened ‘out of the blue’.
E.g. Then one day, completely out of the blue, he visited me.
Blue refers to the clear blue sky. Normally a thunderstorm does not happen when the sky is clear blue. When it happens, that surprises us since it is unexpected. This explains the ‘connection’ to “blue” in the idiom.
According to some English scholars the idiom is a derivation of an old idiom "a bolt out of the blue" or “a bolt from the blue” which refers to a completely unexpected and surprising act, like a thunderbolt from a clear blue sky.
He doesn't like the color
He's making a joke about the color blue and it's relation to tTUN.
LMAO. And the dude wrote up a full dissertation of the meaning of "out of the blue". Hahahaa, this made my day
He even cited "ExploreABC". Big guns.

I read as much as I could find on him through the years. Damn this turn of events.
Best wishes to Mr Rod Smith, may you land upright and full of confidence going forward.
Forever a Buckeye!

One of my worst "what if" guys on the team.. Meaning highest hopes least accomplished...
Unfortunately Ohio State no longer has a true power back. I've been working so much I haven't been able to keep up...Numbers are numbers though. When it comes to NFL combine numbers Rod Smith will always be bigger, faster and stronger than Elliott. Contrary to popular belief the 190 pound and less Samuel and Wilson are not RB's. Speaking of Wilson...is it just me or is al of that "speed" really overrated? I have yet to see him break open a play and he always falls on first contact. Personally, I think Smith has been underutilized. He has the same size Eddie George did, was faster than George, and yet never got enough game time to show his true potential. My guess is that his chances of being I the NFL as a mainstay are greater than Elliot's. That kid should have gone to Indiana...then he probably would have kicked our ass here and there and would be in the NFL now.
"I hope they're last in everything". One of Meyer's comments when speaking of TTUN after being hired at Ohio State.
Woah, talk about unexpected. It really seemed he had turned his life around, and he was definitely an asset to this team, especially on short-yardage downs and in the running backs room. Hope he figures everything out.
...And M*ch*g*n still sucks.
i'm pretty sure I saw him come in for 1 play @ RB, unless the announcers were wrong.
MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS
Was he at PSU? The announcers brought up the fact that he wasn't in on short yardage situations. It makes sense now. Next man up.
Title picture is from that game - must be something new...
In case you're curious, it's Mr. Spray
The picture at the top of the story is a picture of Rod Smith at PSU.. notice the all white uniforms along with the crowd all dressed in white?
"Antonio Williams is to Ezekiel Elliott as Kareem Walker is to Derrick Green." - DJ Byrnes
I just rewatched the PSU game tonight to make sense of how we could have been so bad, and happened to see Rod Smith play in the game. He was on special teams and also played a snap.
"I don't apologize for anything. When I make a mistake, I take the blame and go on from there." - Woody Hayes
I believe he actually had a carry in the PSU game...
Aww crap! I hope you nothing but the best, Rod!
What's round on the ends and high in the middle? Tell me if you know!
Your dvote isn't from me but there is one problem with the "next man up" phrase. No other RB is what he is. The next man up will not be able to get that tough one or two yards. Elliott has been a disappointment in that area and the other backs are smaller, slower, and weaker. This loss could be big.
Didn't do much academically.....
... like go to class?

F!!!!!! Wanted this guy to succeed as much as anyone.
...not as much as CGroverL did.
I'm surprised I haven't seen a 20,000 word dissertation on the subject by him yet.
When you lose, say little. When you win, say less.
At least I know people read before they dvote. Thanks for the reference...I do apologize for wanting a RB to get carries when he is the EXACT size Eddie George was plus was faster than Eddie was EVER. I haven't commented much lately. I've just been reading comments and upvoting. I still think that Ohio State just lost the best overall RB on the squad. Having a game where Elliott gets 28 carries and Smith doesn't see the field is mismanagement, period. This all is simply Meer's way of eliminating the big back. The only big back Meyer ever utilized was Hyde, and he was the only option. I like to think I know football a little bit...and I do...Ohio State WILL miss Rod Smith.
Really hope it's not something drug or alcohol related. Going to miss him.
"We'd wipe the floor with them" - Evan Spencer
Best of luck to Rod. But where do we turn now? Looks like Curtis, Brionte, and Warren are going to have to really step up to the plate. Also, I wonder if this opens the door for more H-back runs?
Such a shame. Everybody always knew the comparisons to Eddie George in term of a breakout senior year were comical, but not even I expected this. He had his chances, however, and so it is hard to feel bad for someone given those opportunities. As for the outlook of the running position moving forward this season, I don't see any negative ramifications unless there is a rash of injuries.
I don't believe in no-win scenarios
I agree. The only thing Eddie George-esque about him is that he runs like he's standing straight up. It's always frustrating to see a kid drop the ball when they are given such a great opportunity and hopefully this is the wake up call that he needs.
Sad. Really thought he was going to be an Eddie George clone when he signed on.
Wondered if something was up when he didnt play Saturday night. Sad to see his career end this way...considering everything he's gone through to get to a place where he was seeing touches. Not going to speculate...just wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours.
Guess he isn't Eddie George after all. Sad.
Whoa that stinks.
All the best to Rod. I felt like he was always on the verge of being a top flight RB. Apparently just wasn't meant to be at Ohio State.

The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced
Couldn't have said it better.
i feel like rod smith could have punched in for the first down on those third and shorts that we didn't convert, i guess this may be why, i don't know... sad to see him gone. best of luck to him
Well, as much as I liked him, there is not enough time for him to get back on the team, which means next man up. It hurts, and it doesn't even open a scholarship up for next year. I don't like this one bit. Right now I don't see any positives, but maybe he can use this as a wake-up call for whatever he issues were. He is the only person that can change this from a negative situation into a positive one.
I wish you the best Rod Smith!
"Print is dead"
Right now I don't see any positives, but maybe he can use this as a wake-up call for whatever he issues were. He is the only person that can change this from a negative situation into a positive one.
There is a way Rod Smith can have a positive impact through this sudden, unexpected, turn of events.
Rod needs to use his senior status (by that I mean his age-appropriate level of maturity) and tell the others, "Don't do what I did. It is nothing but a road of regrets. I made mistakes, and though I didn't learn fast enough to conquer them, YOU CAN!"
(this I hope)
I agree 100%. Right now, he needs to learn form this and the underclassmen need to learn about consequences and etc.
Did not see that coming
Was it from the team or the university? The way it reads, it sounds like he was dismissed from the university.

I have heard the same thing, I hate to say sources but its accurate. But there is more than 3 but only 3 got busted.
All the best to this kid, but man what a waste of talent.
He will always be remembered for that badass touchdown run against Nebraska in 2012. #RIP2012Huskers
Love the run - I don't mean to take away from it, but that's some pretty piss-poor tackling...
I remember he ran on late for Hyde, and didn't know the play. He asks Braxton, but I think it's just an instinct run.

Sucks. Hope he gets his diploma. Good Luck Rod.
Hopefully he gets a good look at Fullback since that's where he seems to project per the draft services.
Fullback?? Rod Smith is not fullback material lol. Besides what NFL team still uses a fullback??
I was really high on Rod and had hoped he would break out this season. It didn't look like it was going to happen based on the carries he was getting. This was not expected, and I'm sad to see it. Best of Luck Rod!

Sad to see this guy go. Always wanted him to get more touches. Hope the best for you Rod!!!

Sucks to see him go, but from what we've heard in the past it sounds like he had some character issues. Bummer and best of luck to him in the future.
After what happened to Spence why would anyone be stupid enough to do that?
Spence didn't get dismissed after 2 violations, and in fact still practiced, so I'm not sure I understand.
I believe Rob was out of strikes. Not sure anybody else is. Well, other than Ray Small.
Hopefully this gives somebody deserving a chance to be on scholarship for the rest of the season. I wish it would have been Rod but apparently he didn't want it any longer.

Downvotes are out of control on this site as of late. If you're not going out of your way to give Meyer and the school a reach around you're probably asking for a downvote or two. It's not what they're meant for and it's getting stupid.

Just plain sucks. Rules are rules, and need to be followed. Hope these guys (if rumors are true) can learn from this and still get an education whether at OSU or somewhere else. Hard lessons are sometimes the most impactful on ones life. Best of luck
Search twitter and you will get the 3
By "dismissed from Ohio State," I really hope you mean the team and and not the University? I hope that's the case so this young man can at least finish his degree.
From what I have read, he has been dismissed from the team.

The Honeybadger failed 9 drug tests at LSU before he was kicked off. It's crazy the diff rules and standards among the conferences. There needs to be an NCAA rule.
The players probably voted him back on the team so it's ok.
Don't hold your breath. Excessive drug tests, oversigning and lawyering up misdeeds are part of the SEC/College Football landscape, and Paul Finebaum will tell you its irrelevant to competitive effectiveness.
They have the best teams money and a blind eye can buy/provide.
Why? The NCAA can't interpret their own rules now.
But that is the SEC!! You CANNOT PUNISH THE SEC - that's God's conference!!
Bet the honeybadger thought because he failed because he wasn't high enough... so....(inhaling deep)

the kids are playing their tail off, and the coaches are screwing it up! - JLS
From NCAA.org. The penalty for positive tests of both performance-enhancing and street drugs is strict and automatic. Student-athletes lose one full year of eligibility for the first offense (25 percent of their total eligibility) and are withheld from competition for a full season. A second positive test for street drugs results in another lost year of eligibility and year withheld from competition. A second positive result for PED usage will render the student-athlete permanently ineligible.
What is the penalty for failing a school-issued drug test?
Each NCAA member is responsible for determining whether to establish an institutional drug-testing program, at which time the school would be responsible for determining applicable penalties. If a testing program is established, though, the school is obligated to enforce the penalties. Failure to do so can lead to NCAA sanctions.
Wow. How often is this actually enforced though?
Really too bad to hear. There is such a proven record, especially over the last 10 years, that if you put one toe out of line, it could be the end of your future – why chance it?!!
Speaking of drug-related incidents, what's the word on Noah Spence? Have I totally missed updates for him over the past (1+) month(s)?

The only substantiated information on this site comes from the staff. EVERYTHING ELSE IS RUMOR!! Okay, I can find cases where people bring in information that's completely wrong. This is by far more common than the cases where someone actually has good "insider" information. The last thing we need is to start accusing college students of shit they didn't necessarily do. That's bush league, my friend
He did not name names. I would have had a problem with that. No sense in dragging names through the mud. But again, he didn't do it.

Screw you! I read the first sentance, then re-read it, got annoyed and then read the 2nd and laughed.
This is hilarious.
I'm sure OSU will announce it soon enough.
It is ALWAYS a shame to see people self sabotage and throw away opportunities that 99% of the world will never see. So many people work their tails off and never get this kind of opportunity, the chance to showcase their talents and set themselves up for life. Even if they don't make it in the NFL, an OSU football player has such a headstart in the competition in corporate or academic ventures. To simply throw that away for a momentary pleasure of any kind is just shameful.
You said it all.
Why throw away your career as a Buckeye for what a little high?
I saw Ryan Day hang 62 on Michigan...His hair was perfect.
Go Buckeyes Beat Michigan
There sure seem to be a lot on unnamed sources out there...
This is very disappointing. Rod had such troubles getting things in order over the years, hopefully this is a bit of a wake-up call. Although the circumstances can always be complicated, it is disappointing to see young people make poor decisions which can have such an impact on their lives. Although college is a time to grow, learn, and experiment, there are certain lines that should not be crossed.
I hope no matter what comes out of all of this, the team is able to stand together and move forward. Also, here's to Urban dealing with any findings fairly, swiftly, and with conviction.
There's no points for second place, gentlemen.
Pure speculation at this point.
Hearing this is tip of iceberg, Dontre, Corey Smith, and Marcelys, possibly in trouble too.

Everyone claims to have their "sources" just sounds like the rumor mill is a turning
Dontre Wilson just tweeted about dez Bryant's catch on MNF. Doesn't seem to care about getting kicked off the team like these unnamed sources said he did.
Not seeing it
Let's be careful on tossing out names or making unsubstantiated claims based on rumor alone. If a source doesn't want it out, he shouldn't be telling other people either. The last thing we need to do is throw names out there to feed our need for information and drag innocent people through the dirt.

Well if we are looking for the bright side of things, at least this isn't happening next week.
Sucks to high hell that Rod got dismissed and there may be more, but at least it isn't going on 7 days from now....... I guess.
This why recruiting is so important. Can NEVER be satisfied with your depth because all it takes are a few mistakes and you can end up in deep trouble.
I want a fall Saturday in Ohio Stadium..

Lousy news. We don't think about it much, but for some of these kids, the transition a lot of the time from humble backgrounds to the 24-7 buzz of a place like Ohio State football is too overwhelming. They don't teach em how to cope on their own. Awful. Good luck young man.
Two things I've learned to ask myself.
1. Am I where I am supposed to be.
2. Am I doing what I should be doing.
If yes to both questions, you don't have a problem.
I'm getting to be an old man. Every time in life that I found myself in trouble, the answer was no to at least one of the above.
There is no such thing as "friendly fire"..
Two people actually believe this to be a controversial statement.
What if you were Hackenburg in Happy Valley (where he's supposed to be), running for his life from Joey Bosa (what he should be doing)? I'd say he is in trouble, but can answer yes to both questions.
You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton
Hahahahaha. Good point!
This makes me sadder than I would have guessed. I always saw Rod as a guy with incredible talent who could be an NFL caliber back if just given the opportunity. It seems like I've felt that same way for 4 years, so there's a sense in which I'll miss that. Such a shame.
This is going to sound cold, but i would rather have his little brother any day. Good luck in the future young man.
I cannot for certain understand who you are referencing, but when you say 'his little brother' I can only guess "Joey Bosa - Nick Bosa?"
I'm guessing he means Jaylon Smith.
Rod Smith's brother, Jaylon Smith 5* LB that went to ND over us
Oh why couldn't it have been Rod Jones instead?
Or 'Dontrelle Winston'
A sad +1 for one last Rod Jones reference
San Antonio Holmes is being implicated as well.
This is a sad story. Kid was a beast coming out of high school. He has all the measurables to be a NFL player, I always felt like the actual talent was the too. After the rough start with a few fumbles his freshman year it was as if he was always being held off the field for one reason or another. I think this has a lot to do with why his brother didn't come our way, I don't think Rod trusted the coaches and hence Jaylon also. Right or wrong I can easily see that as a possibility. Rod should have transferred, he would have been better off. It's hard to show your great when you only get 1-2 series a game. His timing with us having Hyde (one of our all time best) just never let the guy have the carries to recover in the eyes of the coaches. It's been sort of a unfair up hill climb for him for three seasons. Gotta tip your hat to the kid tho, most with his level of talent would of told OSU to piss off long ago. Sure wish he would have, bet he does too today.
I just hope that if it for drugs that it was not for weed, would hate to see a senior in the middle of his last season get booted from the team for weed. I mean really, who gives a Fukushima
"If you don't have something nice to say, then say nothing at all"
If it was drugs Im kinda hoping it was just weed and not something worse. If it was we could potentially be looking at a much more troubling issue for rod than being dismissed from the team
I understand that rumors are flying about other players being next, but Rod has had problems with grades in the past so that seems to me like the most likely reason by far. If grades are implicated, it is unlikely to be a multi-player problem because unless we have a Notre Damesque academic scandal; it's all about the individual.
If grades are the issue, there is no shame in that. Ohio State has become a very good academic institution (despite what the fan base of a team up north would like to believe). Academics alone at a good school can overwhelm many, adding in the full time job plus overtime that is collegiate football is very difficult.
I hope they didn't trade their gold pants for the stuff because we all know how heinous a crime becomes when gold pants are involved. Good luck Rod, get your dang degree son! #differentrules4differentschools
I found 2 traffic tickets for Rod Smith & nothing on any of the others mentioned searching Franklin Co's data.
This is probably why his brother went to Notre Dame. You can get away with ANYTHING there as long as you win. Not the case with Urban.
That's a pretty ignorant comment, if you know anything about recent Notre Dame actions with their football players.
Hmmm lets see, during Brian Kelly era, top D-lineman raped a girl who later committed suicide. Got away with it. Starting WR got arrested 3 times, sat out Spring game. Starting QB cheats, sits out a year and sent to top QB training facility to improve his game. Should I go on???
Yup. Can't argue with that. ND is a master at pretending to discipline. For any other student, "expelled" means you don't get to come back. At ND it means you get to preserve a year of NCAA eligibility and work on your skills.
I know we don't like ND and want to think the worst of them, and any other rival fan base, but please point me to the article where the top d-lineman is in the clink for rape and continued to play. Out a whole year for academic cheating? That sounds about right. Perhaps you've followed the discipline of 5 others who were also caught cheating?
As for the starting WR arrested 3x, who is that exactly? Are you confusing that with the reserve WR who was arrested in June with 3 felony counts (not 3 arrests)? Who is this starting wide receiver arrested 3 different times who only sat the Spring game?
Please do go on, with your sources....
I don't know if he's referencing this, but Michael Floyd had 2 or 3 DUIs while at Notre Dame.
and since when does jail time = definitely guilty? Especially in the sports world, we know that's unfortunately not true.
Floyd had the 3 DIUs, and you can read about the D-lineman below. Note the line "According to multiple reports, Shembo says he stayed silent about the case under orders from Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly"
can he still claim a redshirt and transfer to jimbo fisher's team?
Seriously though this is disappointing news
All I have to say if it's true, at least partially, why are these kids such dumb asses
You said the operative word "kids" they are kids and kids do stupid things! It's been that way since the beginning of time unless your last name is Tebow.
"The future is bright at Ohio State." - Urban Meyer 1/1/15
Reports are saying it was a failed drug test which lead to his dismissal. Noah Spence was given another chance, not sure why Urban and co cant do the same for Rod. Maybe still let him suit up and practice. I'm sending good vibes your way Rod, I hope things turn out okay
Because Rod has had about 12 chances.
Rod messed up, but let's not trash the kid. From all of my interactions with him, he's a genuinely funny, nice guy. He's a charismatic guy. I feel awful for him but hopefully he takes this lesson in stride and gets his act together.
But yeah. Of the football players I know, Rod is easily one of the nicest and one of the funniest guys to be around. Hoping he finds success elsewhere.
When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.
From someone who has seen the kid since high school I can confirm that he is a good kid from a good family. He has always had issues with grades even before college. As for all of those speculating about Jaylon... once Tressel was gone it was Notre Dame all the way, he stayed nice with OSU coaches for obvious reasons but everybody over here new it was going to be Notre Dame. They have a younger brother who is pretty talented as well. Something to watch for is if this has an effect on Austin Mack and Auston Robertson from Fort Wayne both of whom like Notre Dame and Ohio State.
Something to watch for is if this has an effect on Austin Mack and Auston Robertson from Fort Wayne both of whom like Notre Dame and Ohio State.
So why would a guy getting kicked off a team due to his own behavior impact recruits? I really don't understand this logic. Is this the same logic that Jacques Patrick's mother used in saying the way Fisher has backed Winston was a factor in choosing FSU? So coaches should let players run wild so recruits want to play for them?
Get your degree, Rod. Best of luck down the road!!!!
All I can say is... that's a shame. And I hope everything else is just rumor at this point.
Good luck, Rod!
Show them Ohio's here.
All the best to Rod. It isn't hard to stay out of trouble and I would give my left nut to just be a bench warmer for the Ohio state buckeyes. I wish they wouldn't throw it all away for something stupid like drugs. Sucks man.
Hello, my name is Rico and I like to party.
I hope he gets his degree. I hate this kind of news.
"They're gonna have skill at the skilled positions where guys have great skill sets." - Brady Hoke
Best of luck Rod, live and learn I suppose.
The only good thing about The Game is winning it - Urban Meyer
There is a lot of bad mouthing drugs on this board. Makes no sense, I you ask anyone who does them most all have very positive things to say about them.....just saying
Is this post a joke?
What do you think...?
I wouldn't put it past some people on this site to actually say this seriously
Very Terrell Pryor'esque statement.
Are you holding? Selling?
Drugs are bad! Mmm-Kay
They have positive things to say about drugs until the costs and negative consequences catch up with them. Most people age out of using drugs because drugs cause too many problems in their lives.
Pryor....... What a loser!!?
According to ProFootballTalk.com, Pryor will receive a $586,000 signing bonus and a base salary of $375,000. In 2012, he will earn $485,000, with the potential for a $20,300 incentive based on playing time. In 2013, his salary will be $595,000 with a $40,700 play-time incentive.
Only a fraction of what he could of made based on potential
Out of left field for sure... Now waiting on further information, hopefully they will be forthcoming with it, but either way best wishes to Rod.
Blessed to be a Buckeye
Sad to hear. He was a solid contributor who was growing on Urbz, but to get dismissed from the team must have been something he's been warned about before or crossing the line entirely... not going to speculate until more news is released, but what a crappy way to end your career as a Buckeye... I hope he finds his way to keep playing football somewhere.
Sad to hear about Rod. I was a big fan.
As for other players...I find it funny how many commenters know so much about what's happening inside the WHAC. I'm sure your brother's uncle's kid's soccer coach is in Urban Meyer's wife's spin class, but lets hold out on dropping names and accusations of other players "doing drugs" until we hear otherwise.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
Dang, good luck with the rest of your life Mr. Smith I know your a good kid, just haven't made the best choices, even though you messed up once a Buck always a Buck in my Book! Good Luck Rod.
Brother's Uncle's Kid's= My cousin's
not that far fetched. Just saying :)
Wow that is bad juju, here's my opinion. I've been in the Army for 18 years and 9 months. I'm sure most of you know that illegal drugs are a big no go in the military. However, chances are given based on the work ethic and overall performance of the individuals who decide to stray away. If Rod ( who subsequently is one of my 15 year old son's favorite players) has been given numerous chances then that as we say is a pattern of misconduct and its time to go. I have had to witness several great Soldiers who went to Iraq or Afghanistan come home and throw their careers down the toilet. It is a sad reality and I hope Mr. Smith gets his act together, so much damn talent smdh....

"CAN THEY CATCH HIM - NO THEY CAN'T - TOUCHDOWN"
Thanks for the support to me it means more to be supported than it is to serve. :)
Well, this sucks. I almost hate to look at the news some days.
This sucks, but I think we all know Rod has run out of second and third and fourth chances. I hope he can get his life together and turn this horrible negative into a positive.
That said...next man up. Dunn and Samuel need to step up their game.
As to the others speculated to be involved; lets let the truth come out and then we can talk.
I have the utmost respect for Charlie Strong and what he's doing to right-the-wrong at Texas. Break the rules....move on. Sad to see, but at the same time, they know there are consequences when they follow through with these clumsy actions.
Although I am saddened to hear of his suspension from the team, it is refreshing to see quick decisive action delivered by the Ohio State football staff. There are reports that kids are getting 2nd and 3rd chances, but the reality is that the average work force doesn't get that many chances. I am sure many of us have jobs with random drug testing. A failed test results in termination of employment. As a veteran of the United States Navy during the Persian Gulf war, a positive test could land you a Bad Conduct Discharge which could follow you around for life. I am all for giving chances to combat addiction, but really, most don't get second chance.
As I get closer to my 50's, I notice there is more gray and less scarlet.
Sad the kid was booted from the team but is it really that surprising? Time for the pups to step up and bite.
Hate more than anything to see young men lose this opportunity in their lives to be part of something bigger than themselves... to lose that opportunity to take a shot into the future... to build something for themselves that would be a gift to be shared with their families today, and a legacy to be born for all of their tomorrows... Wasted over being wasted... I hate fucking drugs and what they do to people and the lives they steal and the things they take and never give back... These young men have to fight back against these things that entice them to give away, voluntarily, all that they earned, and all of their opportunity they were granted.
First thing I read when I wake up... Ugh, terrible news.
You can feed a bobcat all the chili it wants. That don't mean it's going to crap out diamonds.
Not sure of details with Smith but.....Urban - "I don't believe in kicking kids to the curb". Spence two drug failures and still with OSU. Smith out. 1st team Junior starter vs Senior backup? Not saying that Smith should still be on team. Just questioning logic as well as consistency. If not smart enough to stay off illegal substances, no different than not smart enough for grades. Not sure why handled differently.
Spence has carried a high GPA, has never had work ethic issues and wasn't constantly in Urban's doghouse the last 3yrs. Apples to oranges comparison
Don't listen to Freddy P. Soft
I'm guessing you missed the consistent academic problems, the accidentally not making it to his team's bowl game, and consistent bad work ethic and attitude before this year. You know, these problems.
IMO, There may be more to it than failed drug screens. Spence's issue was failed drug screens. Smith's issues go beyond failed drug screens including other problems that concerned Myer and team culture. For Smith, to many consequences put an end to his Buckeye career in football.
What a disappointment.
Where is the team vote? I AM OUTRAGED!!!!111!!1
Utilizing the DJ outrage...well done!
Failed drug test vs failed drug test. Apples to oranges.........
Poor academics, multiple issues with work ethic, drug violations vs drug violations.
What a shame. The dreaded ol' violation of team rules. I thought Rod had it turned around to where he was at least a positive contributor on this team, even if he wasn't going to be the star that many thought he'd be. I hope he uses this as a big life lesson...same with anyone else who gets kicked off the team.
Of course if this was LSU, there'd be a team vote and he'd stay. If this were FSU, police would help cover it up.
Class of 2010.
Respect women, no drugs, no stealing, no guns. These are the 4 commandments of Urban Meyer and the "Core Values" regarding "Decisions" that are on signs in the Woody. There's no way to miss it, and it wouldn't seem too hard to comply with those, and yet, here we are where we have been before, and we will most certainly be here again.
I was the guy that always got caught breaking the rules as a kid - and I'm thankful. I've noticed that the guys that are good at being bad eventually have one big slip up where they aren't good at it, and I talk to those guys in prison. What is a head scratcher is those guys who aren't good at it, keep getting caught, keep suffering consequences, and yet keep coming back for more.
Until the pain of doing something exceeds the pain of changing it, people do not change. Perhaps we can help these guys better if we hurt them so badly the first time they do something, that it stops it there. But we seem to be committed to warning, wrist slap, harder wrist slap, time out, spanking, probation, prison, death penalty. Some guys aren't sorry until they are at the end of that chain.
Dang, hopefully he can still play somewhere else. He has great potential.
Go Buckeyes! Go Bengals! Go Reds!
My true love will always be Rosie
Sucks to see Rod Jones go. He was a good contributor in the kicking game.
"Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed, is more important than any other one thing." - Abraham Lincoln
Does anybody know the reason why? This sucks!!
Too bad. Would have loved to see him turn it around with all of the hype surrounding him when he came to Ohio State.
Hopefully he will serve as a mentor to future Buckeyes to realize what you've got as a player at Ohio State and not waste the opportunity.
Best wishes in the future, Rod.
Made a comment earlier and it was my first on this site so I think I need to clarify as I would never want to start a rumor which is not true as I truly love my Buckeyes. My comment was that this thing with Rod Smith was just the tip of the iceberg and that there will be others getting in trouble for the same thing as Rod. I will protect my source as this person, who has been 100% reliable in the past, is very closely related to the program. My source told me Rod got nailed on a failed drug test for weed, as did Dontre Wilson, Corey Smith, and Marcelys Jones. Rod kicked off team as we all already know and the others facing quarter(s)/half(s)/game(s) suspensions as they were not nearly in the dog house as much as Rod had already been.
Was also told last week by the same source that Spence knocked-out a guy at a haunted house but that no charges were being filed. Thank God! Same source told me before everyone heard it wherever that Braxton's season was over two days before all the media outlets had it.
For all those who need a source on a message board to believe something is true, I have no problems with your need for credible information. Don't trust or believe anything I have to say, I am simply blogging and am in no way associated with any publication. I would also give the advice to not fully trust the major media outlets either as they don't seem to need relible sources either and are working in a world where they no longer have the inside track to the best information. As examples, Osama bin Laden's death was first reported by a neighbor with a cell phone in Pakistan and I think we all remember how The Columbus Dispatch reported how Thaddeus Gibson was driving a free truck when just a little journalistic investigation would have shown he was still making payments on the note.
My original comment was one that was really in disbelief of the stupidity which exsits with these athletes as my source also tells me when they are to be given a drug test they are notified with ample time to quit their drug of choice.
Tailgated last year next to the Norwell family (great people) and saw a copy of Urban's Code of Conduct which every player is required to sign and adhere to, these players know the rules and it is a shame when they let their teammates down by making these foolish decisions.
