The Cleveland Glenville Pipeline's Five Best Buckeye Commits

I completely agree with this top 5, but I will say that I think the Glenville 3 from this class could have a hand in shaking up this top 5.

Ginn Sr. does an amazing job there and his players come to OSU ready to play.

HS
Killer nuts's picture

I might switch Ginn with Whitner but that would be it

HS
Kindell's picture

Agreed.  You could make a case for both, but I think Ginn had more of an impact.

HS
MattyBeingMatty's picture

I would switch them as well, respectively.  TG was an All-American his first 2 years while Whitner saw the field on special teams and minimal time defensively.

I agree also. If we are going off of their careers at Ohio State then Teddy Ginn should be #2. If we are factoring in NFL careers I could see you making a case, but I think Ted Ginn Jr. is one of the all time greats to play at OSU.

Have to disagree about them coming into OSU ready to play.  Ginn Sr gets great athletes but most have been somewhat raw and  needed to be coached up a bit once they get to Cbus.  Teddy never was a great route runner and Troy was a kick returner his first year

Keep the pipeline coming! It speaks volumes about the quality of Ohio high school football that a team with so much talent does not totally dominate the state

Fun fact- Troy was kicked out of St. Ed's for various indiscretions before ending up at Glenville. Straightened himself up, and the rest is history.

He had trouble as a Buckeye as well and was in Tress' dogouse for a while.  Just goes to show you that second chances have a way of turning some guys around - most recent Heisman Trophy winning Buckeye!

Fun fact:
Troy punched a kid (who shall remain nameless) from Toledo St Johns in the face during a basketball game whilr at St Eds. That was the last straw for him there...
Still one of the most amazing Buckeye seasons ever. And the last players jersey I bought, which will probably remain unless I have a son that plays.

Oh man, you've been missing out.

A really famous quote from TP. A classic example of his poor ability with the press. I felt bad for him in this instance, because clearly he did not mean what he said. He was trying to get across a good message, but it ended coming off as really ignorant.

HS
TNbuckeye91's picture

oh damn, i don't know how i never saw that. That was terrible. I was really hoping that that quote didn't come from mattybeingmatty, but come to find out, great it came from TP.  everybody kills people.

Hahaha.. Unfortunately God did not gift me with the athletic ability to be able to say something like that in a post game interview.

*EDIT* On the old site there were not enough characters to quote TP, but now since there are it is there.

IMO, I would flip TG-II and Donte Whitner... As stated, Ted Ginn was one of the best Buckeyes, period.

HS

Personally, I would have had ShotGinn at number 1 but this article does make a good case for Troy.  I might have considered Hines over Hall based on the full career.

HS
JakeBuckeye's picture

Switch Theodore Ballgame and Whitner, for sure. For me, Ginn is number one on this list. He was crazy good. I think he was unique in that we'll never have someone like him ever gain.

HS

We have been quite lucky the last decade +.  I was watching different highlight reels of various Buckeyes and between Mo C, Ginn, Beanie, Troy, TP, Brax, and Hyde, Im not sure anyone else has any better.  And on defense we could make quite a reel of AJ, Bobby C, Donte, Malcolm, Lil Animal and even Cam.

It's been a long time since we've seen QB play like this. Man he maximized his arm strength with mechanics and little wasted motion. He may not have been big, but we've had bigger guys before and since that couldn't wing it like him and were easier to get onto the ground despite their size. Come save the Houston Texans, Troy!

Go Bucks and michigan STILL SUCKS!

Got goosebumps watching that again.  One of my OSU favorite highlight videos of all time.  The 3:54 mark is the definition of TGJ.  He had just made a cut and there are two Hoosiers within a yard and a half of him, and already running at full speed and he pulls away in 2-3 strides.

HS
Killer nuts's picture

That first punt return is one of my favorites for Ginn. If you pause the video right after it strikes the 18 second mark when you can see all the defenders in the window it is inexplicable that Ginn gets through

HS
JohnnyKozmo's picture

I know Musberger has his moments, but he hands down the best play-by-play in CFB today.  Not even close.  Nesler and Tirico are up there, but he definitely makes the highlights better.

That catch juke and run at 2:47 against Les Mile's Ok State team in the Alamo Bowl was absolutely amazing! It reminding me of a run Michael Vick had where he started on one side of the field and completely changed directions to gain 20 yrds on what should have been a 10 yard loss when he played for the Falcons.

I think Jermaile Hines would be ahead of Hall. We haven't had a safety able to blow up a bubble screen since he graduated.

HS
IGotAWoody's picture

I was surprised to not see Hines on the list, too.

HS
themostbrian's picture

Good list but I think the exclusion of Jermale Hines was a huge oversight.

I would put him 4th behind Troy, Ginn and Whitner with Marcus Hall 5th - Hines is the prototype for what we now call the 'Star' position and he basically held down that position for a couple of great defenses in 2009 and 2010. Hines was that tweener athlete that basically changed how Tressel defended spread offenses - he was a linebacker with DB speed and he was a sure tackler.

Tedd Ginn is what Urban is searching for with this class of Buckeyes.  A true game changer and a threat on every play.  Let's hope he finds one.

Watching the Troy Smith video is awesome, seeing the "1" next to OSU in the score just looks right.  It's been too long since we've seen that, I hope Braxton can summons his inner Troy Smith.  Smith was the ultimate gamer.

Been going to Glenville games since the Troy/Ginn days.

Most talented team I ever saw from them was 2005 with Bryant Browning, Robert Rose, Arvell Nelson, Bruce Frieson and Cordale Scott. Team was just loaded.

Most talented individual was probably Dareus Hiley. Kid was an absolute freak. Was in the same class as Whitner. Never saw the field due to off the field stuff.

HS
seafus26's picture

I haven't lived in Ohio for years. How does that school not win championships?

Go Bucks and michigan STILL SUCKS!

HS
Fear The Elf's picture

Couple reasons.

First, until this year, they were D1, which always has a few nationally ranked teams.

Second, as much as I respect Ted Ginn Sr. as a person and a leader of men, he's not very good x's and o's. Glenville has very agressive schemes, but they are so basic and predictable. A good coach with decent athletes can beat them.

HS
seafus26's picture

Just wondering. I'm removed up there so don't know. I think of a rival HS down here in Houston, Katy HS. They don't produce D1 talent like that. Their best alum is probably Andy Dalton. They play old school power football. Kinda like our Tressel teams. I can't stand them but respect what they've built and the championships they've won

Go Bucks and michigan STILL SUCKS!

HS
Osurrt's picture

I agree with the top 5, but believe that we will see 1 or 2 of the 2014 crop join this list 4 years down the road. I agree with others that Teddy Ballgame should move in front of Whitner (at least in the S&G, their Pro Careers favor Whitner).....That being said, I would make Troy 1A and Ginn 1B. Sounds crazy seeing as how Troy won the Heisman in his Senior year, but Ginn contributed from beginning to end in a big fashion and was a constant danger and threat on offense and special teams. Would have loved to see the national Championship Game with him available for 60 minutes.

HS
Scarlet_Buckeye's picture

2002
Troy Smith - won a Heisman, unanimous All-American, AP Player of the Year, played 5 NFL seasons

2003
Dareus Hiley (4-star) - never did much
Donte Whitner (4-star) - 1st Team All-Big Ten, 2x Pro Bowl, NFC Champion

2004
Ted Ginn (5-star) - 1st Team All-American, NFC Champion
Curtis Terry (2-star)

2005
Freddie Lenix (3-star) - don't believe he ever played a game for the Buckeyes
Jamario O'Neal (4-star) - HUGE bust

2006
Bryant Browning (3-star) - started some games, but was never anything special
Robert Rose (5-star) - possibly the biggest Glenville bust to date
Raymond Small (4-star) - too concerned with partying, than playing

2007
Jermale Hines (4-star) - never really did anything at Ohio State

2008
Jermil Martin (3-star) - most underrated Tarblooder; came up BIG so many times vs. Michigan
Shawntel Rowell (3-star) - don't recall ever playing at Ohio State

2009
Marcus Hall (4-star) - key player on the O-line for 2 years
Jonathan Newsome (3-star) - didn't do much for Ohio State

2010
Christian Bryant (4-star) - one of the best diamonds in the rough (ala Jermil Martin)
<this was the year of Latwan Anderson (5-star), and most ppl thought Bryant would be an afterthought>

2011
Cardale Jones (3-star) - career is still being written, but on track of being "just another guy"

2012
De'van Bogard (4-star) - hasn't done anything, but is a So or Jr (I think?)

2013
Chris Worley (3-star) - career is still young/being-written

2014
Marcelys Jones (4-star)
Marshon Lattimore (4-star) - heralded to be the "next Ted Ginn" (quite lofty expectations)
Erick Smith (4-star) - firmly expect Smith to be the "next Christian Bryant" (i.e., every expects him to be the afterthought of his class, but could very likely end up being the prize Tarblooder jewel of his class)

All-in-all... the pipeline probably hasn't been as "lucrative" as one would think.  Aside from Smith, Whitner, Ginn, Martin, Hall, and Bryant... only 6 of 18 Tarblooders (not counting Worley, Jones, Lattimore, and Smith since their careers are still being written) have "panned out."  That's a "hit rate" of 33.3% (or roughly 3 out of every 10 Tarblooder recruits (for Ohio State)).

Wasn't he a two or three year starter? That's pretty damn good.

Uh, what? This isn't even debatable, Jermale was a great contributor.

Jermil Martin (3-star) - most underrated Tarblooder; came up BIG so many times vs. Michigan

Maybe you are confusing Jermil and Jermale, hah. When did Jermil do anything of significance at Ohio State? I remember a long TD run in garbage time against Minnesota and that's it.

Troy Smith, simply the best. Can you imagine what it would have been like to have him on last years team? I love Braxton but I just don't think he has near what Troy had. I realize that Troy had better recievers but I truly believe Troy would have made the recievers we had last year much better than they were. He could run if he needed to and he was a much better passer by a mile than Braxton or Pryor for that matter. There is no doubt in my mind that the 06 team would have won a National Championship if Ohio State would have had this years OL. If only we could mix and match different parts of different teams.

HS
Phutatorius's picture

I had maybe the opposite reaction when I was watching Smith's highlights — I was sitting there thinking, "Imagine if Brax had WRs like Ginn, Gonzalez, and Robo to throw to."

That's not knocking Troy, who is one of my all-time favorites and made huge leaps forward as a passer from '04 to '05 and from '05 to '06.  Braxton has not developed to that extent.  But if he had NFL-caliber receivers running routes, getting open, catching balls, and grabbing YACs, he'd look a lot better than he did this November.

If I could give Ted Ginn Sr. my entire helmet sticker load I would. He helps develop kids in the inner city of Cleveland to become young men with respect. Most of his kids are successful weather they go on to play college ball or not.

It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.

HS

its amazing how much talent Glenville turns out and yet they never can win a state title.

Ginn Sr. does a great jon at preparing his kids for the next level but rarely gets them prepared enough to win a title.

Seems like year in and year out when Glenville gets into the playoffs, they get out coached.

Does great thing for the kids, giving them the hope that they can better their life and ill never take that away from him. Does a great job at developing the Jimmy and the joes but struggles at the Xs and Os
