If Urban does not win COY...
I mean, there is no Bill O'Brien story this year so, yeah, he has to be it.
Ah who really cares though? We all know he's one of the top 2 coaches in the nation. A stupid B1G COY award isn't going to tell us or anyone else anything new.
Time and change will surely show how firm they friendship... O-HI-O.
Kirk Ferentz, will you step to the podium? But seriously, I think Marc Dantonio will get it.
Nothing says "You're a Loser" more than owning a motivational poster about being a Winner.
Urban did what was expected, win the division. Dantonio did what was hoped he could do. And if not Dantonio, then Jerry Kill did the most with the least. UFM is going to have to settle for B1G championships and Crystal footballs!
Its a great problem to have-only being able to live up to expectations. Its something that plagues Ohio State. I really don't think an OSU coach can win this award. Tressel went from .500 to National Champ in one year and didn't get the award because he did what Ohio State is supposed to do-he was great. Same with Urban.
Let the coach of the year award go to the guy who rebuilds something. I'm content cheering for a team that gets to the top and stays there.
Proudly dispensing unbridled arrogance since 1983.
How will he sleep at night?!
Everyone knows you can't both have great players and be a great coach.
If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. ~ Bruce Lee
If he doesn't win it this year after going two (regular) seasons in a row undefeated then I've come to the conclusion that it will take an Ohio State coach literally walking on water to win Coach of the Year.
Scotch: It may be too early to drink it, yes; but people it is never to early to think about it.
JFunk, this is really my point. Well said.
I'm not sure walking on water would be enough, what else you got?
He manages to keep Brady Hoke away from a free all you can eat buffet?
I am pretty sure that walking on water is the theme of Coach Meyer's year three plans. How did you get access to these secret plans. Year two is The Chase. Year one was "Bring the Juice."
I'm to the point where I just don't give a crap about any of these individual awards anymore. I think there is a national bias against OSU players and coaches and a bias in the B1G as well.
And all it does is distract the players from focusing on the task at hand: the next game. I believe this played a part in 2007 disaster in the desert.
We all know about the Heisman hex. I think it's better for a team's players to get snubbed on individual awards. That way going into their league CG and bowl game they play with a chip on their shoulder, rather than an entitlement mentality.
"If you're not changing, you're falling behind."
I'm fine with conference awards I just hate the ridiculous naming scheme. They tried far too hard to be inclusive. An award should have meaning, not just act as a feel good sop to teams that feel slighted. It was also insane to put player's names on it who are still in their 30's. Suzy Favor Hamilton anyone?
your profile pic is sweet, can you point me to it?
Urban would probably just trade it for tattoos anyway.
I'm not sure his wife would let him do that. He would probably have to sneak a very small one and hope she never catches him.
"Those two, they're ruining this war, for all of us!" MAJ Houlihan, when she was whining about Hawkeye and Trapper because they were simply having fun.
Jerry Kill will win it. Look what he did with Minnesota this year. Add in his health issues, which could easily have become a distraction and were not. What everyone needs to remember is that OSU is expected to simply reload every year, not rebuild, not face major challenges etc. So when the team is playing for the B1G Championship, it is expected. Unfortunately, that will not win COY in most cases. The guy who was able to have a good season and did it with less (caliber of players, facilities, large coffers) will be the winner.
Not a bad point, and the more I think about it, maybe Dantonio, but I just can't believe Urban will have won every regular season game for two years and not get it. JMO
I'd be okay with Kill getting it. Given how poor Minnesota has been for so long, being able to get this team competing at a nice level is a testament to him and his staff. I want Urban to win it, but I'd understand and be okay with Kill taking home the hardware.
"Everything you see on the internet is true." - Abraham Lincoln
Why would Kill get it, didn't they win like 3 games without him?
Miller missed a few games too, so by that line of thinking, why was he named first team?
Because they didnt lose a single game when he played quarterback for the team. he didn't miss a single B1G game, and his statistics are likely better than any other quarterback in the league.
"Who cares? Go Bucks." - Aaron Untch
Perhaps the award should go to his assistant coaches? That might make more sense....
I wonder if Froholdt was impressed most with the 3-9 overall record, the 0-8 in conference record, or Bert's ability to be an asshole.
Maybe playing time was a big factor for Froholdt. His future head coach at Arkansas proved that you can literally fall on your ass there and still keep your job.
Cant believe that Illinois is keeping Beckman, 1 win in the B1G in two years, and two terrible recruiting classes. What is going right?
USC's interim coach Ed Orgeron felt he had earned the job with USC's turnaround and resigned in protest.
They need Orgeron IMO
The B1G won't get better until we start paying for big name/recruiting coaches.
“Our footprint is Colorado to the mid-Atlantic, Canada to the mid-South,” he said. “We wanted to have a national slate of bowls because we’re the closest thing to a national conference.”
I still argue that what good is this "national presence" unless it is a quality presence? What good is the extra money unless it is being reinvested to create a quality conference?
Beckman has a 5 year (3 years remaining) 9 million dollar contract and they previously bought out Zook and Bruce Weber. It's all about the Benjamins. Obviously winning is it's own fix, but there's not a lot of recent history to support a turn around in recruiting/wining.
While Benjamins are important, I think any school would give a coach three years minimum unless cocaine (or other illegal drug) use is involved.
Normally, I am all for giving three years minimum for a coach to prove himself, but Beckman has shown absolutely nothing to give Illini fans any hope.
Before that happens, the AD Mike Thomas would have to be fired unless they are really happy with their basketball coach and want to be known as a basketball school.
Ron Zook was a pretty good recruiter. So good, it wasn't long ago that there were rumors of Urban hiring him.
A couple of thoughts:
1. PSU fans aren't the only conspiracy theorists in the B1G. Sparty fans have long been the first to claim that their woes are the result of the man deliberately keeping them down in order to feed the Big Two.
2. It's not a bluff if you fully intend on going through with it. It would have been more accurate to say that Delaney called ESPN's bluff.
I do love how college coaches can bounce from one big dollar job to another with impunity while the players buy what these guys sell and ultimately get stuck in no man's land until they know who their coach is. I especially like the part where coaches say they didn't interview for a job-which of course means they usually did.
In reality, my problem isn't that a guy gets a better job-that is is right to do so. But the way coaches go about stuff sometimes drives me insane. Todd Graham-after a year no less-tells his players via text. It appears Sark didn't even tell his kids right away. Meanwhile Gary Andersen tells his players individually and thanks them for their dedication to Utah State.
I guess there's a way to do things. Sark really seemed like an OK dude but I'm not sure what I should have expected out of a product of the Carroll regime.
As for Illinois-I'm going to venture a guess that Beckman is in his last year so Illinois can get the taste of the Zooker's buy out out of their mouths. Dude walked away with a clean 2.6 mil (after Florida paid him 1.8 to walk away-best break up ever). I'd venture a guess that they want Beckman to be able to go away without paying him. Bobby Petrino was-and remains-the name most U of I fans want to see. I would be shocked if he didn't get the job next year.
Good post but I do have one small quibble...
I especially like the part where coaches say they didn't interview for a job-which of course means they usually did.
I think that's a bit unfair. I'd be willing to bet that the majority of the time the rumors are false, we just remember the times when they weren't.
Don't forget Tuberville leaving Texas Tech during some recruiting dinner, or right in the middle of talking to a recruit at a dinner, or something like that.
Priority #1: Beat Michigan
Tuberville (and some others) claims the story is false but I still get a chuckle at the image of him clambering out of a restaurant's restroom window and running off down a dark alley.
Good call on Petrino Brewster. That would make sense for them and add a crazy quotient to the B1G coaching ranks. Wasn't Petrino's brother the OC at Illinois under the Zooker? Since the "Flying Pelini Brothers" have disbanded, we could now get the "Motorcycle Crashing Petrino Brothers".
yea, lost alittle respect for rittenberg there. My ESPN viewage has been decreasing steadily over the past few months, and now all I care about is the nfl coverage...
You can feed a bobcat all the chili it wants. That don't mean it's going to crap out diamonds.
So Auburn beat the number 1 team in the country and OSU beat the number 5 team in the Legends Division of the terrible Big Ten?
Ceci n'est pas une signature.
So Auburn lost to the number 15 team in the country, a team itself with 3 losses, and OSU lost to ...........?
Uh, I think you forgot the sarcasm font, as Alabama was NOT the first team in the country, only slotted to finish in a position to BE the number one team in the country.
Now, Ohio State is slotted in a position to be the number one team in the country.

Re:WMD's Appalachian State can have ANY logo and I will think it's awesome. Ttun is showing signs of a turn around, but their woes, in my opinion, have stemmed SOLELY from that loss way back in what was it, 2007? I was walking by the Varsity Club on my way back to my car after our game, and stopped on the sidewalk to watch the end of their game... Remember it like it was yesterday. I remember feeling bad for Ttun and the B1G for a few seconds then thought, nah, -uck Michigan!
Bosa is not going to be frosh of the year. He had a good year, but I bet anything it will be Hackenberg from State Penn.
Yup. This is a virtual certainty. The Wisco win sealed it.
Also Hack won the weekly award 5 times! That might be a factor.
Nothing strikes fear into the heart of your opponent like a corn cob pipe.
Bravo Appalachian St.
I don't ever comment but I had to just add one thing. I am sitting here in Korea rewatching the Auburn Bama game and I am shocked at how much better our offense is than Auburn. I tried to envision BRAX and Guapo running in and through Bama with the same plays as Auburn. I think our O Line is a class above Auburn and more polished than Bama. I just wanted to hear some views on that and if you guys felt the same way that I believe we could beat Bama by a touchdown or two.
We do have to credit Auburn for rushing for 296 yards against Bama - no easy task.
I agree, though, that Ohio State's offense can put pressure on defenses in more ways than Auburn can. Braxton is a better passer than Nick Marshall. Hyde/Brax are more lethal in the run game than Mason/Marshall. Ohio State's OL is better. Better receivers/TEs, especially if you factor in blocking.
Totally agree Gunin.
Braxton Miller >>>>> Nick Marshall
El Guapo >>>>>> Tre Mason (who's built more like Jordan Hall than Hyde)
No point in stopping there because the rest of Ohio State's skill position players are better than Auburn's as well.
The key difference, and most significant, is on the other side of the ball. Auburn's DEF is clearly better than tOSUs, mostly notably at LB... No glaring issues of poor no-good whiffing terrible bad tackling.
Don't text while driving.
Too bad we didn't get Trey DePreist....as I recall it was between Bama and OSU to get him.....
There is also something called a defensive side. OSU can't keep the 5th ranked team in the Legends Division, with a hobbled QB from scoring over 40 points.
Is this DORK on here to try and see how many NEGATIVE helmet stickers he can get? Regardless, keep the hilariously stupid commentary coming.
“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” – Theodore Roosevelt
Worth 5 minutes of your day to check out that article on Aaron Murray, IMO.
Absolutely. I've always felt that Georgia was the most likeable big name team from the SEC and it's things like that from Aaron Murray and a handful of the other players that help continue that thought.
He seems like a really quality guy, in addition to the stellar career he's had at Georgia. I hated seeing him go out with the injury a couple weeks ago.
Honestly, if Urban wins it this year, it makes last year look like even more of a sham. He took a 6-7 team learning a new system and went undefeated in his first year. If that had been anyone, but Ohio State, they would have won COY. Even Michigan.

Appreciate the comments on the O and I agree our defense isn't great but they are good. I think people are really not giving TSUN enough credit for their play. Granted they do not have a great record but I think they have great athletes and their game plan was great. You cannot short change a rival game. If you looked at most of them they were tough. Just getting tired of supposed experts knocking our boys. I just watch and can see we have a ball club I wouldn't want to mess with. I also have a great feeling about Saturday. Wasn't so comfortable going into The Game.
The only award Lewan should get is Buttwipe of the year; what an overrated low class POS he is.
The only hard day was yesterday
Someone made the comment that Urban won't win COTY because he is doing what he is supposed to do at OSU. Well Larry Coker won COTY in 2001. Miami had 5 1st round draft picks that year and 6 in the 1st round the next year. I think he was doing what he was supposed to do as well and won.
Then someone might rejoin, "Yeah, but fewer of us expected Coker to be that successful, even with that loaded roster, because Larry Coker isn't that good of a coach . . . oh, wait, I mean . . ."
I think Urban may yet win National COTY, but I don't think he'll win B1G COTY. The B1G for some strange reason refuses to bestow that award on the OSU head coach, whomever that may be.

God I miss Dantonio...
the Big Ten would rather keep its coaches around...
...because they are all doing such a great job.
Orgeron kinda got the shaft for sure. Surprised he disappointed the kids and resigned at this time.
Really sad to see Rittenberg get on his proverbial high horse and ride it over Dontre Wilson. To treat him like some sort of thug for throwing a few punches after being surrounded by 7 wolverines and having his helmet ripped off is really low and foolish. And as for Hall, the worst of his behavior was after being ejected en route to the locker room. Not on field stuff and with the exception of the double salute not terribly different than might be seen following a game deciding INT or other costly mistake.
"Woody would have wanted it that way"
how many times was his head ripped back and forth. I've seen Oysters get shucked with less force than that. It was ridiculous and you see how many refs stand there just throwing around their flags while it was happening. Rittenberg is an ass clown!
Now Hall I won't defend. What he did wasn't necessary. I personally feel he should get bench for a half a game and let Elflein start at least. I don't think it would be a big dropoff if they did.
I saw a UFO once.......it told me to have a goodyear!
The message boards shouldn't get to me...but all these articles about who should be suspended/worst culprit/who started the fight with _ichigan are absolutely egregious. Nauseating to boot.
"It's so easy to be average...to HELL WITH THAT" - Urban Meyer
This may be off topic...but has anyone read the EPICNESS that is this blog post!!!?? Post and REPOST this EVERYWHERE!!!
The "Zapruderesque" article on the fight was a hit piece. The author needs to be bitchslapped for ignoring the truth. Showing a gif of Wilson defending himself against the guy who two seconds earlier had RIPPED HIS HELMET OFF. What garbage.
This whole event was orchestrated by hoax... that's why it was a backup linebacker who lit the fuse. After the fight, you could see him on the phone getting accolades from the honchos upstairs. I'm sure the words "well executed" and "historic" were bantered about....
"The future is bright at Ohio State." - Urban Meyer 1/1/15
Boy, that Aaron Murray seems like a pretty good dude.
I would agree w/ Urb that MSU's offense has improved, but they still had trouble scoring on a few B1G teams (Purdue, Minny) and ND and South Fla.
Reaction to Bama-Auburn game.
Mark May: Throws his head back in disbelief
Lou Holtz: Acts like he can't see the monitor even though the lenses' in his glasses are 2 in thick.
Lou Holtz looked as if he was in a daze, but the truth is that he can't see the screens that are off set, he has to wait until they on the desk screen to see the play. Mark May wanted to scream, because he was going to have accept OSU possibly going to the NCG now.
also, in respect to all the coaching changes...
As a coach in the past, I recognize the allure of being in that position. However, one thing I realized while in that honorific, is that not all people are meant to be Head Coaches. To be a head coach involves more than just the ability to know your sport and win. And that is where people get blind, they may not have the complete skill set needed to see not only the big picture, but the ability to micro manage the smaller videos as well. Some assistants are just that, they shine greatly in their area of expertise and as long as they don't over reach, they perform fantastically. Sometimes being content with who you are is the way to go. I'm not saying that they shouldn't aspire to be more, just that sometimes more can be too much.
Go Bucks! TTUN tears are best! Beat Wisky!!!
Nicholas - love your articles but if Lane comes out here I won't be able to hold back the natives. I am not a UDUB fan but college football needs to spend sometime without that man trolling the sidelines. It would be the best for all parties involved.
The off season bites !!
