Meyer is very candid about his assessments, so when he says that he's confident in the defense, that gives me hope.
Urban is savvy. Candid when he feels being candid will help motivate his team, but he is no media greenhorn. He knows people are watching, and he isn't going to throw his defense under the bus with so much to play for right now.
He could have called them a 'clown show'. He's not afraid to tell it like it is.
"The future is bright at Ohio State." - Urban Meyer 1/1/15
But he doesn't always do so. And particularly he hasn't when it comes to the defense this year.
He also said the defense has to get better. I hope that's what the young men are hearing - a lot. So much at stake. Time for Perry and the other LBs to take a big step up. If Shazier leaves early (and given the season he's had, he looks as ready as Roby), the other LBs will suddenly be thrust into action and leadership. I love Vrabel and and I think he's a good coach and an even better recruiter. But at some point, no matter how green and young and thin or LB corps is, they have to step up.

BRAX FOR HIESMAN
Appreciate the info as always, Kyle.
One question - any idea from the B1G on when they might decide on Hall and Wilson?
Hindsight is, and in, 2020
Oh, this isn't the DA from FLA we're talking about? nevermind...

You have to factor in holiday hours.
Wild Willie has bigger fish to fry than a rapist. Evidently, his office can only work on one felony at a time and right now that's a murder.
I say they should have to do community work in the state up north for a day. My God Wilson was mugged by 5 or 6 guys those guys up north ought to be coming down to Ohio to do some community work as well.
I may not be able to outsmart too many people, but I can outwork 'em.
After the championship game. And then the NCAA will ban us from NCG for playing ineligible players.
Meyer will fix it! I will trust that
Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.
I hope Urban isn't just giving the need for improvement lip service. The defense really needs to step up this weekend. Hopefully it was being over hyped for TTUN and getting their best shot, instead of scheme. I'm really hoping the defense takes last weeks piss poor performance personally and gets it right for the B1GCG

Defense better come to play this week!! Most inconsistent group we've seen around here in awhile. With the talent we have on the roster, excuses are getting old.
Yes sir....it's surely not a lack of talent! Thanks for this comment and it makes perfect sense to me.
It is time!!!!!
I admit I am far from any expert on defense, but I am actually starting to wonder about that comment "not a lack of talent". Certainly, the defense is stocked full of 4 star athletes. But not all of them turn out to be "as advertised". I wonder what percentage of 4 and 5 start recruits either become 1st or 2nd team all american or get drafted in the first, say, 4 rounds of the NFL draft?
Take a Curtis Grant for example (number 2 recruit nationally). He has the tools to be a top NFL selection, but apparently (and no disrespect intended) doesn't have the football IQ needed to be really successful in college. Im not sure if this is referred to instincts or what, but it is not related to athletic ability and not sure if it is a coachable trait. (think athletically meager larry bird).
Is RDS being coached up more than the other LB or is he just better football IQ wise? Was Roby being coached up more last year when he as pretty good - and not so much this year?
At the end of the day it is the responsibility of the coaches, either as teachers and schemers are as evaluators of talent. I wouldn't be surprised if this group of 4 Star defenders are just less talented overall than in years past.
I love Brax, but worry about him trying to over-do it when the coach starts implying that he has to prove he's worthy of the award. Then again, the indoor environment should be absolutely perfect for him. He definitely doesn't appear to like cold weather. Go Bucks - beat Sparty.
“It would be a disservice to our players if I went and worried about it, and I’m certainly not.”
I see what you did there. Touché, Coach Meyer. Touché.
"Without winners, there wouldn't even be civilization."
Preach on with your golden voice, my brother.
This stood out to me:
Meyer points out half of OSU's run yardage comes on perimeter runs. Said it'll be tough to get that this week against Michigan State.
On Saturday, Meyer said it will take a balanced attack to get the job done. Can't be run-heavy or pass-heavy.
and this too:
"To reach the level Ohio State expects, we have to play better on defense.”
I'm so glad OSU has a realist as their HC. Things needs mixed up on O and much needed repairs to the D. Let's hope this is a helluva week in practice for OSU's defense. You can bet MSU is having some tough practices and watching a lot of film from last weeks abortion on defense. Sorry if this offends, but even OSU's HC sees what's needed to beat the likes of MSU, FSU or a mighty SEC team. And it's defense...that's much better than what OSU has produced in the last three years (not every now-and-again. I mean on a consistent basis, and please don't start throwing out excuses. The time has pasted for those!). The offense will mix things up and make it tough on the #1 defense in the nation. I'm terrified that if Urban lets things remain the way they are, that OSU will lose this weekend or in the next game for sure. I think (even though we don't know for sure) that UFM will be very actively involved in helping that side of the ball until seasons end.
...and so forth.
Brax will need to throw the ball with more accuracy than we have seen recently if OSU is to knock off Sparty. Their DBs are the best we'll have seen all season.
"Buclkle your chinstrap, we're gonna grind meat!" - Woody Hayes
I have noticed decreased accuracy ever since the cold weather started, and Brax put on gloves. The B1G CG and any bowl they will be in will not require the gloves. Maybe that alone will increase accuracy. I know that as a coach, I never liked the idea of a Q wearing gloves. Should be interesting to see how the game proceeds sans gloves.
Is it gloves? Or is it also wind? Probably both.
He seems like he is throwing to hard at the short to intermediate passes
I think we will be better prepared for MSU than we were for TTUN. TTUN has reserved a section of every practice for prep looking at the rivalry game. Sparty has not had the same objective all year and as such will not be able to improvise an attack quite so well as TTUN did. They could steal a page from their Big Brothers but hopefully we are learning how to better defend the throwback screen this week. Take away that one play from their arsenal and you would have taken half of their offensive output.
Pain is Weakness Leaving the Body!!! USMC
To help take those of you off the ledge about our defense, the 2002 football Buckeyes (the ones that won the whole damn thing) had the worst pass defense in school history giving up 3404 yards. Our current defense is on pace to break that record...if history repeats itself...
Excellent point. As much as I love Krenzel, Jenkins, Gamble, Hartsock and Clarett... I will take our 2013 offense, and current offensive coordinator, hands down. Not to mention our current OL.
I bet if you looked at the stats though you'd see that the 02' team was a ton better on getting off the field on 3rd down and not giving up touchdowns and forcing field goals, which this 13' defense is absolutely atrocious at
Kyle, would you mind commenting on Fickell? There is a thread here suggesting that he blew off questions regarding the defensive performance. Hoping that was out of context?
Forget balance on offense; if the run attack is working, then keep doing it till the opponent stops it.
And then I told her...i'm no weatherman, but tonight's forecast is calling for several inches!
I watched that screen pass Michigan ran several times (and at the end to reach the 3-4 yard line) with success every single time on Saturday.
What's the coaching advice here. Isn't the DE's assignment to stay put/on an Island when he see's this sort of play break with the QB traipsing the opposite direction?
If this is the case, then perhaps coaches need to start here?
If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.
Every team we have played has had success with screens. If 6 knuckleheads watching the flat in Tallacalacky can see this, so can every OC in the country. Even the walrus can spot that trend.
i would be more worried about msu if it wasnt for the walrus
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
We're not going to put 40 on Sparty. I PRAY the defense can get it together because this is going to be a bigger war than Saturday.
