I thought this was a pretty good article from Forde on ESPN.   Sorry if it has already been linked but we beat up on the worldwide leader pretty bad, and mostly they haven't been to hard on the Bucks or Big 10 this year.  I think people realize how bad the ACC and Big East are this year.  Really the SEC East too.

When I read that article I could see Forde gritting his teeth as he wrote it. He is one of the worst offenders of the OSU hate. I read his Dash for football and basketball every week, but take it all with a grain of salt.

So long to Duron Carter... can' t cut it at OSU???  Wanna transfer somewhere "easier".... fine.  OSU needs players it can rely on to stay IN THE LINEUP.  Good luck, you appear to be a nice kid and have fun in Eugene or Norman.

At this point, I agree with Palm Beach Buckeye.  This Duron Carter circus needs to ship off to seedier pastures.  Give Philly Brown, James Louis, or one of the other young guns a shot.  Duron's a head case.  Talented, but a head case.

HS
PALM BEACH BUCKEYE's picture

Yup....  Alot of nice receivers in the waiting and ones who are remaining academically eligible.  It appears Young Duron was used to alot of hand-holding in High school (Private) and he wasnt ready to handle the load on his own shoulders.  I wish him well, but if he cant carry the load himself, then time to move on.  OSU will be fine either way.

I agree, I used to think having a guy that is 6"5 in the end zone would be great!  However, we could always split Terrelle out wide and have Bauserman throw him a jump ball like we did against Texas with Boeckman!

Re: Duron -- I like to see kids get a second chance to grow. Who better to help with that maturity process then the Buckeye family lead by Tress?  This is a win-win for Tress (and us) if he comes back.  Not only do you get a chance to help a kid grow and mature but he could potentially be a great addition to the football team.  That's just my opinion.

HS
btalbert25's picture

I agree with both sides.  I'm not so sure he's a so called head case, but he definitely needs to grow up.  At this point I say the team is fine without him, but he could be a great asset.  If he is willing to put in his dues on the field and in the classroom then welcome back, if he is unwilling to do what it takes to become the player we want or expect him to be, then good riddance.  I'm not going to attack the kid's character or anything because I've never met him and don't know him personally.   If Oregon is the place he needs to go to become that player, then so be it.  If it's back here in Columbus great.  This team isn't hurting without him, but it definitely could make room  for his talents if he has his head strait.

HS

And we want pops to keep his loyalty to tOSU.

HS
btalbert25's picture

Chris Carter's loyalty won't have much to do with this I think.  The University didn't pull one over on Duron, it was his own doing.  If Duron goes elsewhere I think Chris will keep his loyalty to the Buckeyes.  Duron is his own man now(sort of) and if that's a decision he wants to make then so be it, but I don't see it turning Chris against the Buckeyes or anything.

HS
Natty Light's picture

Duron could be a very valuable addition next year.  he does have some experience with pryor, and beat out a lot of other guys to be the 4th WR as a true frosh.

also there is no better place for a 2nd chance and getting on the right path than Tress and OSU.  example: Tress reaching out to Clarett and having good things to say recently.

HS
Orlando Buckeye's picture

I'd take him back on the team, gladly.  It's not like they kicked him off the team.  He just wasn't quite ready for prime time academically.  If he wants to clean up his act and come back, welcome.  If he wants to go somewhere else, we'll be fine.  I just wonder why he wouldn't want to, other than just taking an easier avenue. (If that's the case, then we'll certainly be fine without him).

I think there are some in the crowd who will never be pleased with what this kid does.  Shawn Springs he is not, but there are a lot of teams in this conference and the country for that matter who would love to have Checkwa in their secondary.

HS
Natty Light's picture

yeah, he isn't perfect, but he is a 3 yr starter and the best we got.  not bad for a 3* recruit considering the other people we have in the program.

He is almost always in position, and lead the team last year in passes broken up. He just does not usually turn his head around to make a play on the ball on deep routes - he generally plays the man. As such he is subject to perhaps more than his share of pass interference calls.

On underneath routes, where the receiver is in front of him and he naturally can keep his eye on the ball, he is talented enough to get in position and he gets his share of INT's.

HS

Two interceptions and a great game notwithstanding, I'm glad he's on the Buckeye roster because I love saying his name: Chimdi Chekwa. That's fun, right there.

Why are so many former great Buckeyes struggling in the NFL?  Carpenter was cut, AJ Hawk barely plays, Ginn was traded, T. Smith was cut, Gonzo lost his starting spot, Gholston hasn't lived up to the hype etc.  I am just surprised by some of these guys.  I thought they would be super stars.

Until the last few years, Cooper's recruiting classes put Tressel's to shame. The Dispatch tried to say they were equal in an article last year, comparing AA selections and NFL draft picks, but they clearly were not.

btalbert25's picture

After the 49'ers performance yesterday we could very well see Troy playing regularly in the NFL.  Ginn was the victim of playing for a team that didn't have much competence at the QB position and he got the dropsies in the NFL.  I do think they could both be explosive in San Fran.

Perhaps Troy Smith at QB with Tedd Ginn split out wide with the "new" Alex Boone protecting his blindside?

HS
btalbert25's picture

I don't think all of those guys are because of poor recruiting either.  Hawk was a great college player, but I heard a lot of talk about people not being high on him as an NFL prospect around draft time.  Gholston was playing out of position, Gonzo missed all of last year and you can't help it when other guys step up and play well which is what happened in Indy.  Carpenter I don't know anything about what happened with him, but it's not just as if they weren't as good, sometimes this kind of stuff just happens.

HS
Johnny Ginter's picture

the answer is pretty obvious, Tressel and co. are amazing coaches and know how to get kids to play within their scheme and over their heads for a while. i think there are some obvious exceptions to this (mangold is possibly the best center in the NFL, gholston has been playing out of position since he was drafted, malcom jenkins looks like he might be pretty legit, santonio was a super bowl MVP, etc), but there have been a ton of guys who looked amazing in college on big time teams that didn't pan out in the NFL. it's a totally different beast

Johnny Ginter's picture

to add to that, people can come out of nowhere to be NFL stars. wes welker was "just another texas tech slot WR" until he started kicking everyone's ass with the patriots. johnny knox went to abilene christian and no one had even heard of the guy until he ran a 4.3 at the combine and made the pro bowl last year. it's all a crapshoot

ToledoBuckeye's picture

True, however Cooper brought in some serious superstars!  I am having a hard time thinking of any of Tressel's players that would make the NFL hall of fame.  Maybe Mangold if he stays healthy.
