I didn't even read the article and headed straight for the schedule. At first glance, I hate the byes, especially in the 2nd week! Who schedules a bye in the second week?
"Those two, they're ruining this war, for all of us!" MAJ Houlihan, when she was whining about Hawkeye and Trapper because they were simply having fun.
My wife looked at the schedule over the weekend and made the comment about no need for season tickets that year cause it pretty much sucks, except AACC. I tend to agree.
“Ain’t life grand when you finally hit it!” DLR
It's better than this year.
The 2014 non-conference slate (Navy, Kent State, Virginia Tech, and Cincinnati) should be a significant upgrade over 2013's (Buffalo, San Diego State, California, and Florida A&M). It is possible to imagine at least a couple of the 2014 games being competitive. Hopefully this will be a new trend.
Proud Michigander, OSU grad. Life is complicated.
Va Tech under the lights in the Shoe.
It’s the first meeting with the Golden Gophers in football since 2009. That game went ok.
Did you mean first home meeting or win that counted? We did play them in 2010 but we know what happened to the wins that season.
As for this schedule it looks really weak again. Only possible games of interest are V Tech at home and then hitting the road to Minnesota and Michigan State. Hopefully the quality of competition is much better in the future...
Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.
Correct...last meeting that counted.
I respectfully disagree, BME. I think Navy with their crazy triple-option, VATech, and Cincy is about as agressive as you will see. I'll grant you Kent State but put anyone else's OOC schedule against that and I think we'd stack up pretty well.

THE Ohio State University
It's pretty hard to please some folks. I'm not sure why at least these games wouldn't be considered interesting:
And if things fall right between now and then, these could also be interesting:
Kent State (if they don't revert to pre-Hazell levels)
Rutgers (the recruiting is there...please commit there, Jabrill Peppers)
Indiana (if Kevin Wilson continues to develop that program the way he has been)
Tougher schedules are on the way in future years, but be careful what you wish for. It's already hard to go undefeated.
Let's hope all these teams on your list are competitive. I can seriously see VA Tech and Cincy being overrated now and may be even then. We'll see but I hope they all are ranked and unbeaten when OSU plays them. It's the only way OSU's getting in despite a play off. You have to get into the top five...and I can see this being difficult unless these teams have strong seasons. Otherwise, OSU could be on the outside looking in. Now if OSU makes history this year...that could all change.
"I want a hungry team. I want a team that can't wait to get out there. I want an angry team! You're the Ohio State Buckeyes. You're an angry football team. You're a hungry football team and I'm proud to be your coach." UFM
Play resumes for Ohio State on Oct. 18 when the Rutgers Scarlet Knights matriculate to Columbus.
Is this like matriculating the ball down the field? I could accept this (grudgingly) if this was Rutgers first game in B1G conference play (as in, "Rutgers will matriculate to B1G conference play against Penn St on Sept. 13th."), but you're trying to hard to sound like you belong on ESPN.
: to enroll as a member of a body and especially of a college or university
but you're trying to hard to sound like you belong on ESPN.
but you're trying to hard to sound like you belong on ESPN.
1) It's "too hard," not "to hard."
2) I wasn't trying to do that at all, but hey, if it comes that naturally to me, maybe they should put me on their gargantuan payroll.
You'd be a colleague of Mark May.
Don't think like that Mike.
Hindsight is, and in, 2020
2) don't do it, 'cause then you'd have to become an asshole.
Rutgers won't be good for two to three more years...and I'm not even sure then.
The Knights have won 8 or more games in 6 of the last 7 years, including multiple bowl games. They're not exactly horrible.
Agreed. People seem to come to the conclusion of "Rutgers sucks" without looking either at their record or comparing Rutgers with their Big Ten brethren.
Purdue, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana...not exactly powerhouses. Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan State didn't really distinguish themselves last year either..
I like Rutgers as a football addition. Not as much with Maryland.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
Get well soon Mrs.Naut 6-0 > 3-6.
If teams who share a trophy game play in the CCG does the trophy go to the winner?
Solid slate.....geographically it makes sense as they're staying home/within the B1G. Definitely an upgrade over the past few years.
Kent State is even a solid opponent by MAC/in-state little brother standards...their program did well under Hazell and should stay competitive under Paul Haynes.
I'm all for distractions at this time of the year, but isn't the 2013 Season far away enough?
Schedule is an upgrade over 2013 for sure, with the exception of Minnesota and Indiana. Like the fact that we are playing both Maryland and Rutgers to start new league play.Wisconsin gets the "Cupcake Schedule" of the year award for 2014,as we do, this year.Don't like 2 buy weeks, especially one so close to start of season, but oh well.
Let's talk about those '17 matchups against UNC and Oklahoma. Go.
Navy caused issues in the past ('09?), and the '14 defense will need to play and tackle significantly better than last year's D. Could be an issue as the option attack is just so out of the norm.
Taking a await and see approach on the two newbies. We'll have to see how they improve (or digress) in a couple years.
Anyone who is even somewhat knowledgeable about football (that leaves me out) as to see that the 2014 slate is much better/tougher than 2013.
As a possible interesting side note;
Why not post the 2014 pre-season OOC schedule for Bama, and show a side by side SOS ranking between them and us?

08/31 - Virginia Tech (at Atlanta, GA)
09/21 - Colorado State
10/05 - Georgia State
11/23 - Chattanooga
08/30 - West Virginia (at Atlanta, GA)
09/06 - Florida Atlantic
11/22 - Western Carolina
Play Wisky in 2015 in Texas, and then follow that with a home/home with Sparty after that.
I figured as soon as I hit 'save' on my reply someone would beat me too it. Lol.
WVU isn't a bad opponent to start the year with. I don't get the end of year cupcake teams that the entire sec schedules. Western Carolina?
I like the preseason games. VT, UC, and Navy are better than our recent preseason games.
It is not Texas or USC, but VT is a big name in college football. I love to beat UC in anything to shut up my UC friends.
Must admit I am happy about the 2014 season- UMd and Navy (or technically Ravens Stadium in Baltimore or M&T Stadium or whatever they call it these days) are just up the road from us, husband is a VT grad so I know he will be very interested to travel to Columbus for that game-yay! I might get to see three OSU games in person in one season!
I'm excited for the VaTech game
