My favorite coach ever!

Damn it feels good to be a Buckeye

what kind of dog is that, Txsbuckeye? I have a Carolina dog; American Dingo. Very similar features!

As long as he’s not here, I’m good.

He needs to take some notes. These are the same guys he failed. Goes to show, it was not our guys?

Good thing he is cheering and not coaching...

I was thinking the same thing.

He takes a lot of the blame (maybe deservedly so) but the more that comes out about the defensive scheme they were running I have to wonder if it was broken from the top and didn’t put his LBs (or other units) in the right place to succeed.

HS

The linebackers are still the weak link.

HS

This. Between Borland’s injury, Werner’s youth and Schiano’s scheme, Davis was in a bad position last year. Way of the world in football, shit happens.

HS

He’s not your favorite coach, nor is he mine.  But I’m glad he can look back on his experience here and find positives.  There are good fits and bad ones in life.  It just didn’t work.

A lot of times people say things on this site such as “once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye.”  Bill Davis was a Buckeye too.  And a proud one.

Bill Davis single handedly ruined the expectations of baron browning.

HS

Smartest thing Ryan Day did was replace Davis as LB coach and Schiano as defensive coordinator. Never hire your wedding best man to any job except drinking buddy while watching games.

HS
Patriot4098's picture

So he wasn’t a good coach, but it wasn’t like he went out there every day and tried to sabotage the team or position group.

Let it go.  It’s OK if he wants to cheer for the Buckeyes.

Failure is usually assigned to the boss who was let go and ended up at Rutgers. Linebackers were a bad part of a bad defense. GS gets the majority of the credit.
Grinch has improved the Oklahoma defense. Better but not good enough yet.

Haven’t seen ANY pass rush, Mr. Grinch.  86-7 LSU??????

Thank you for the support, Bill... but I'm glad you'll be watching from the stands this year.

NFL coaches don't always transition to college and vice versa. Glad to see Bill is back home and doing well. Maybe some of the players he recruited and coach will play for him at the next level.

Ya I don't think he could connect with younger players.

But also I think a lot of the D's problems last year had to do with Grinch was expecting to be coordinator, but when Schiano didn't get the TN job and stayed, there were some sour grapes and that caused the whole D to suffer.

Ground men throwing temper tantrums. Glad he is at Oklahoma.

Considering how the NFL often gives head jobs to guys with no experience, Davis spending his entire career as a position coach (unsuccessfully) is pretty damning. If you were that bad at the HS level, you'd be fired long ago.

HS
BUCKEYE3M's picture

I'm with you Cajun. Never thought he was a bad guy, just thought his coaching skills were more effective in the League.

Thanks!

At last, Kerry had cracked open his first Red Bull with an impatient delight. And the rest, as they say, was history.

I certainly don’t know how good of a coach he was or was not. Yes I can say our linebackers seemed to underperform - but according to coach Washington it looks like he had the right guys out there. It does not take an idiot to see that the scheme we are running now is way better than the one Schiano was running a year ago.....

Doesn’t take an idiot to not understand schemes and personnel and what it takes to be a CFB coach

HS
BigBuckFan25's picture

Totally agree Buckeye 24. I think the defensive scheme put the linebackers in bad spots. They seem like they played most of the game on the line of scrimmage last year which takes them out of the play unless the play just happens to be called to go where they're lining up. The linebacker coach had to place his players where the defensive coordinator specified according to the play call. You cant blame the linebacker coach for that. It would be like putting Justin Fields in the Army offense, expecting him to pass for 400 yds a game and then blaming the quarterback coach for him not reaching those performance statistics. Davis may or may not have been a good coach but Schiano's stubbornness to stay in the same defense all year is the bigger reason the defense was historically bad last year. The very first game should have sent up red flags with Oregon St setting records for longest TD from the line of scrimmage against an OSU defense.

I never understand why some fans just can't let things go.  By all accounts Bill Davis is a good man.  My hunch is that he worked hard.  Things just did not work out as well as he, fellow coaches, players and we fans had hoped they would.  I'm glad he is well and looks back on his time at OSU fondly.  Go Bucks!

HS
Czechlagerisbetter's picture

The perceived problem is that Bill went beyond being just a good man and was actually the best man.

While that worked well for wedding photos it was less than ideal for linebackers.

HS
allbucksallthetime's picture

Last year is over and gone forever.  Bill Davis being the best man in Coach Meyer's wedding has exactly nothing to do with the here and now.  Bashing him on a public message board proves exactly what?  It proves nothing at all if the truth be known.  I'm glad he isn't as bitter toward OSU as some are him toward him  Go Bucks!

Oh no, this is gonna be a troll special.  How far down will I have to scroll before first guy criticizes Davis for being a poor coach?  Over/under is 2.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

The guy has been average to horrible at every stop he's been. He along with Tim Beck are prime examples of the good ole' boys club in coaching.

Classy man and a stand up guy. Terrific human, far as I can tell. Glad he found work elsewhere. Really glad.

Not good karma that this guy scored a feature 11W post on the eve of Clemson. He was so bad.

HS
Prickly_Pete's picture

One of urban's few flaws was keeping subpar position coaches for personal reasons. So many of his assistants got poached, so I sort of understand why he kept them around. But davis really was not a good fit. He and zach Smith should have been sent packing much sooner.
