Justin Fields to Wear Small Knee Brace Against Clemson, Saying Injury Progress is “Probably Not Where I Want It to Be Right Now”

"Justin Fields is going to be 100% for Clemson."

"Justin Fields is going to wear a small brace for Clemson."

Well, one of those was a lie/overly optimistic.

Oh well, as long as he's mobile and doesn't aggravate anything, I'm happy.

You guys are acting like Clemson did not already know he had an injury he was dealing with. If he says he is 85% right now, I promise when Saturday comes he will be medicated enough that his knee will feel no pain and he will not have issues with mobility.

HS
tcm1968's picture

The thing we don't know is... what was he for the B10 Championship game... if say he was 50-60% for that.. and is now at 85% range that's a huge difference.. We'll know early in the game I'm sure if he runs when he gets the chance..

Go Bucks!

Just wear the bigger brace as a precaution. We can't have him going down like against TTUN and miss snaps or worse.

Cardale wore one against Bama/Oregon, it shouldn't completely immobilize him.

Oddly enough, I sprained my LCL and had difficulty walking for a while, but it didn’t hinder my golf swing. Which is weird, because you think the torque on the knee would be bad enough to cause pain. Maybe different with MCL.

Wisconsin did this in the B1G game, the guy had a free run at fields and chose to dive at his knees instead of a normal tackle

HS
Extramedium's picture

Do you really think Clemson wasn't already aware he had a bad knee?  if he claimed he's at 100% do you think they wouldn't be going after it?  Nothing's really going to be at 100% for any of these guys until the off-season.

HS
analyticalguy's picture

Him saying this in no way chamges how Clemson prepares or their gameplan - that they'll want make him run and hit him, while recognizing he can be elusive if they don't contain him. He had an injury which they knew (without him saying anything) would somewhat limit his mobility and leave him vulnerable to re-injury, yet with 3 weeks to recover, he can be a threat.

HS

Why in the world would he give Clemson this info?

If he can run 10-12 times on Saturday, that’ll be fine.  He’s not a run first guy anyway.  He’s shown he can run effectively enough with a big brace.  He won’t be truly better until next season...you don’t heal up from a sprain in a few weeks.

Clemson is gonna bring the heat in this game. I feel that they will blitz a lot more than usual. Time to get the screen game, bubble pass, short crossing routes going. If you’re in Clemson’s shoes what would you do? We give up a lot of sacks so I feel that they will try to exploit this weakness. QB designed draws can break their backs. Fields will need to run and scramble in this game limiting his sacks is key. THEY WILL BE BLITZING A TON!

HS
NavyBuckeye91's picture

Screen passes to Ruckert & Co as well as Dobbins will slow down that blitz.

He’s definitely not playing mind games, but I’m also not sure why he would say that. This does not necessarily make me confident about the game, OSU really needs him to be able to run.

HS

What makes you so sure he’s not playing mind games? He was at Top Golf last night driving golf balls. If his knee wasn’t close to 100%, do you think the coaches would let him do that?

HS

Because Justin has been overly candid this year and the idea of psychological warfare does not enter his mind, he’s just worried about himself and his team.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

HS
admiralpb's picture

Says who? He's a smart kid. He could be playing chess right now.

HS
Extramedium's picture

Let's start with the fact that there was no possible way he'd be 100% after a couple weeks, and also consider he'd like to be 100%. So obviously he's not 100% and not where he'd like to be.  I don't believe this is being treated like such a great revelation.  It's also not anything Clemson didn't already know

First Braxton and now Justin.  Clemson has had more than its share of good breaks when it has come to Ohio State QB health.
It’s more important than ever that Justin gets some good protection on Saturday.

HS

Short of a legitimate miracle there was no way he'd be fully 100%

HS
Cooper's picture

It’s not his effectiveness that worries me right now, but a few shots could slow him down a lot or knock him out of the game. I’m honestly kind of shocked a sprained MCL hasn’t healed properly in three weeks, it must have been a higher grade than initially thought.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

HS
actionstanleyjackson's picture

You could say that about anyone really. I think he will be fine.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS

Not everyone has a sprained MCL right now, so I’m not sure I get that point. A tender knee is a tender knee, I think there is room for a little anxiousness.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

HS
AZ Buckeye13's picture

It was probably worse than reported initially, knowing that Coach Day doesn't like to disclose injuries. He originally hurt it against PSU and that was a nasty shot he took to the same knee in the TTUN game. We were lucky he wasn't knocked out for the season the way the hit looked on camera.

HS
Extramedium's picture

It's a relative thing, his knee is probably perfectly fine as far as any of our daily lives are concerned.  But it was never going to be where he'd want it to be for a CFP playoff game vs Clemson

HS

HS

Hopefully he doesn’t aggravate it more/re-injure it. I imagine he’ll still be mobile enough to keep them honest. Rest of our offense is gonna have to play extremely well, particularly O-line and Dobbins. Fields is a warrior and we are not so one dimensional that if he can’t run then our game plan is toast. Hope the next few days of rest help some. Go Bucks!

HS
TigerSweat's picture

Well, at least he has until Saturday to continue rehabbing that knee. I think he'll be fine come game time, maybe not 100% but close enough to run the offense without limitations.

I feel like Justin is naturally an honest person so I don't think these comments were gamesmanship (wish they were). Given the high quality of their DC I'm sure he's prepared game plans for both a fully healthy Justin or not so much. He's going to go after him aggressively early to verify where to adjust his game plan. Hopefully our game plan calls for a quicker passing game than normal. No matter how many top 10 teams we've played, none come close to the defensive talent that Clemson has.

HS

HS
Brandon26841's picture

I’m with you. I think Fields just answered the question truthfully without thinking too much about it. He said he’s at 85%, and hopes to be closer to 100% for the game in a few days. 2 weeks is NOT a very long time to heal up a knee injury / sprain (I’ve had multiple the past few years). Knees never heal up as quick as you’d like them too.

i think Day was being truthful too when he said a week or so back that Justin would be 100% (although I’m still not sure why he said that so specifically in the first place). That’s what they thought would be the case, but it hasn’t turned out that way. At 90% and with adrenaline going he’ll pretty much be close to 100% anyway.

Small brace Fields is good enough. Hell even big brace Fields delivered a couple NFL level touchdown passes. As long as he is decisive and not 2nd guessing. I'm going to bet his mobility is going to be a key component of our game plan, hence making this not a big deal.

HS

Two things:

1)  His health is in the hands of his O-Line, the TE's and running backs when he drops back - they all better sell out, when protecting him.

2)  Did anyone catch his lack of mobility against TTUN, when he went to the medical tent, put on the big brace, come back in the game and on the first play, bobbed and weaved out of the pocket, rolled easily to his left, threw across his body with a strike to Hill for a TD ?? Neither did I ..... Much like JT Barrett, if that's what he calls lack of mobility, I'll gladly take it ......

Not looking good. Our pass protection is bad enough, and without a healthy Fields being able to scramble our offense will definitely be hampered. We’re not making a two gutsy TD comeback versus Clemson, like the big ten championship vs Wisconsin. They’re simply too good. With Venables being one of the best DC’s in the game, our scheme has to be impeccable in order to win this game. I have a feeling it’s gonna be ugly offensively for at least the first quarter, till both teams adjust schemes accordingly. Obviously, can’t control the situation (and Justin’s knee), but a bummer nonetheless

I have a feeling it’s gonna be ugly offensively for at least the first quarter, till both teams adjust schemes accordingly. Obviously, can’t control the situation (and Justin’s knee), but a bummer nonetheless

Clemson is weak in the trenches on both sides. Shouldn't be much to worry about.

I wouldn’t say weak. We might be better and I think we will have that advantage but I wouldn’t go as far as calling them weak.

Am I the only one who Thinks Fields gives out a little too much info in his pressers? I'm sure Dabo Sweeney heard this and will try to make Fields run more.

I think Fields gave out exactly what he wanted to give out today.

I'm sure Dabo is going to wait and see how Fields runs and adjust the game plan accordingly just like he was before the press conference

If he’s 85% today and started last week at 50 he will be near 100% by gametime.  It’s science

OSU is extremely disciplined when it comes to pre-game dialogue that I tend to believe its a bit of disinformation.  However, if he is at 85%, that is more than enough to keep the tiger D honest while the ground game can go to work them.

Fields will be just fine, but CY will knock Lawrence senseless in the 1st qtr rendering pretty boy useless. Indeed, he's an accident waiting to happen except he plays in the ACC. This will be the only time all yr Clemson plays a legit defense.

Sacked five times vs Wisconsin. WTF! And, Clemson's D is tougher than the Badgers; on paper, anyway, Not that that means the Tigers can (or will be able to) do that many, too, but, even one sack has potential to injure (maybe game ending) the qb; or result in a fumble/take-away. Either, but the injury of course more so, would greatly benefit the Tigers. The Buckeyes' O-line then must, MUST protect Fields better than in the BIG10 match, or they'll essentially be handing the game, and opportunity for a 3rd CFP Championship, to Dabo and his boys.

Anyone can get injured on any play.. also I really don't think Clemson's line is better than Wisconsin's.  Last season definitely, but not this season.

The article isn't about "anyone", it's specifically about Fields, THE most critically necessary player on the Buckeyes offense; if he goes down, the game is all but over for Ohio State. With arguably the best defensive mind in NCAA football in Clemson's Brent Venables, don't for a moment think that that scenario isn't one that he, and the Tigers D, haven't envisioned; and aren't licking their collective chops over it's probable significance. I'm not suggesting that it's a built-in plan, to put Fields down with a game ending injury, but . . . BUT; if Fields is gone, Clemson, for all intents and purposes, knows it's moving on.

That said, I essentially agree with you. Sure, if Dobbins got knocked out, that would bode ill for the Buckeyes as well. And, if any of several of the better defensive and offensive players got knocked out, it could hurt OSU's capabilities of advancing to the Championship game.

Merry Christmas! And, hoping for a Happy New Year with an O-H _ I-O CFP National Championship.

Justin needs to stay upright, and keep his jersey clean....we need him for 2 more games, because I don't see Chuganov going full Cardale in a matter of minutes.
