I've sat down and watched both championships multiple times watching just the lines. OSU collapses the pocket within 3 seconds even in the first half. Clemson will be able to pop slants, curl, and other quick routes. But those four five seconds clean against UVA will not be there. Clemson may be very technically sound, but they have not faced a line this talented or deep

HS
2morrow's picture

Seems like teams have somewhat figured out Chase for now. If you watch the last couple of games, our guys did this to great advantage in the 2014 championship run - assign the blocker outside priority and if Chase goes outside, use his momentum to take him beyond the qb. If chase goes inside, chip him with a tight end or RB allowing the blocker to recover.

The untold portion is that everyone else on the line is one on one giving us an advantage.

HS
CieGrant_Blitz's picture

This is true but Clemson is a true spread team.  Wisky has a small army of FBs, TEs and played w/ 6 OL at times against us.  TTUN straight double teamed him and held CY a lot.  No one likes to see a lot of flags but it would help us a lot if CY draws a hold in the early going to set the tone.

HS
Gmac44135's picture

Michigan's O-line was the only unit that I seen neutralize Chase Young this year. There was one bad hold that should of been called on a TD pass near the end zone, but their tackle had a great game when I re-watched it. Wisconsin did well in the first half of the game against Chase, but he still was getting pressure with a lot of attention on him.

HS
Buckeye_bob's picture

Michigan threw 3 step drops all game long, Chase couldn't get there if there were no linemen. when he did hold the ball he got sacked.

Problem for Clemson is that they cannot replicate Young in the preparation for this game. Quick passes only work if the defense gives up inside leverage. Reading Young is only a temporary plan. Virtually impossible to do it all game. Etienne is a great back but I question his ability to break tackles against a defense the has been pretty good at not missing tackles this year.

Football is a religion in Ohio. We attend our service every fall on the banks of the Olentangy. A place we affectionately call "the shoe".

HS
ISURVIVEDCOOPER's picture

You have your tackles go up against OLBs who have speed in practice - this way they don't get surprised by the speed part. Many on here complain that Chase was held all game against Wisconsin and TTUN, but in rewatching those, there many times he didn't win the 1-on-1 or was anticipating run so didn't try speed rushing as much. Either way, we all know only Chase can stop Chase, so whoever lines up against him is in for a good test

Young feels like a bit of an overlooked X-factor in this game, at least to me. When I've worried about the "keys to beating Clemson", it's only been

1) Will Okudah / Arnette / Wade be able to slow down Ross / Higgins / Rodgers?
2) Can the OSU OL protect Fields? Will Fields be healthy?
3) Can Fields beat Clemson with his arm?

And I think Young's relatively "quiet" games (for him) against Michigan and Wisconsin has made me and maybe some others forget just how much of a game-wrecker he can be. Clemson has a good OL and Lawrence is a big, strong dude that isn't easy to sack and isn't sacked often... but a huge game from Young could swing this game, which is essentially a tossup IMO, in OSU's favor (strip sacks, 3rd and impossibles etc are basically turnovers). If Young isn't able to make an impact they NEED someone else on that DL and specifically off the edge to pick up the slack. Lawrence with all day in the pocket can and will pick you apart.

HS
stlbuckeye15's picture

Well said. I agree about your keys to beating Clemson. My biggest concern is not Clemson's offense(although it is great and difficult to stop) it is our offense against their defense. The games we have struggled in have been games where our offense either fumbled and/or otherwise failed to score. Fields has to play his best game yet and can't put the ball on the ground or hold onto the ball too long. Hoping he's 100% or close to it. I think if we establish the run and get Fields in a rhythm we will have a great game.

HS
wheezy1281's picture

I think the biggest key that no one is talking about is the health of Shaun Wade.  Day's comments during his presser yesterday were less than pleasing to hear: "Day said Shaun Wade is “getting a lot of rest” as he recovers from the injury that kept him out of the Michigan game and forced him to leave the Big Ten Championship Game, but he's “been doing a good job” and they'll get a better idea of his health in practice this week"

The having a better idea of his health in practice is not a reassuring sound - seems like one of those not fully healed injuries that one hiccup during the game/practice will put him out.  I do think he plays, but would wager he would be more in the 80% health range, which will be a key factor in the game if true.  We will need all of the CB's healthy and then some to be able to slow down Clemson's WR's - this includes the backups getting some reps in certain situations and confidence against them as well.

Depth and contribution at all levels will be vital for both teams - I think the team that can get the most quality reps from non-starters with their depth will have the best advantage in this slugfest.

HS
stlbuckeye15's picture

For what it's worth, Shaun indicated in an interview the other day that he's 100%. Of course that may not be true but he seemed confident. I'm sure they're working on getting him healthy. I agree that their receivers could potentially cause us issues but thankfully(as you pointed out) we have lots of backups who have quality reps under their belt. No matter how good our secondary plays though if Lawrence has enough time they are gonna make plays. That's why I think we gotta win the line and create pressure. Bama had a good secondary last year(at least not a bad secondary) and they got lit up. What really got them though was turnovers and failing to score, which again is my biggest concern. Clemson is gonna score so if we can't then we are toast.

HS
Brandon26841's picture

but he's “been doing a good job” and they'll get a better idea of his health in practice this week"

I had the same thoughts as you when I read Day's quote.

HS

Yeah, I agree with that. Wade says he's 100%, Day is more noncommittal while not being dishonest. The players were off last week and Shaun WAS getting lots of rest, so he won't really know until he's seen him practice this week and next. For all we know Wade had a calf cramp or slight muscle pull or a deep bruise. We'll see.

Bucktown 5.7x28's picture

Lawrence hasn’t been touched all year. Needless to say, it’s going to be a challenge for his O-Line to play up to the competition that OSU brings. People will point to last year all they want. But ND and Bama didn’t have an Uber elite defensive game plan to come after Lawrence. Last year’s championship was the first time in a long time I seen Saban outclassed on defense, and he had no answers for it after halftime. Maybe it was the roids but I think it had to do with the game plan by Bama. They were blinded by their own stubborn rigidity on defense, and no creativity on offense inside the red zone. I think Day will have a creative offensive game plan to counteract the blitz of Clemson and on defense, they will try to get home with 4 to start the game. If Young gets home early and often, it will force Swinney’s hand to add extra protection to his line and limit his number of plays on offense. Advantage OSU.

You can judge a civilization or lack thereof, by the way mankind treats the wildlife Ghandi

HS
BuckeyeGrove's picture

they will try to get home with 4 to start the game.

That's what I'm afraid of. Seems like they're comfortable with starting vanilla and going from there, but it's allowed the QBs in the last two games to find mismatches and throw the ball with 3 step drops. I remember multiple times where they singled Young, he beat his man, but Coan had already thrown the ball.

I guess my point isn't that you can't rush 4, but that it needs to be a bit unexpected. Maybe zone blitzes or a different look that can confuse them. All I know is that if play Lawrence straight up, don't get home, and he gets into a rhythm, it's going to be really hard to win this game.

This is just talk. I'm sure they're going to try and play a mind game and make Chase Young think they look at him as just another piece of the Buckeye defense but if they don't truly zero in on CY and game plan for him he will wreck their entire offense. They know that, they're not that stupid.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

HS
stubbzzz's picture

Yeah.  I hope so.  If they’re going to do what TUN and Wisconsin did, with the triple teaming chase, someone else on the D line is going to have to make them pay for it.  Someone else needs to level up and become a game wrecker.   If that happens we win.  Can’t nobody handle Chase and Harrison if they’re both on fire.  I hope Zach has a lot of growth in practice this month, cuz we’ll need him.  Too bad Cooper used his last game on TUN, he would be just the guy we need for Clemson.

HS
I'm Ron Burgundy's picture

I think Clemson will "struggle" a bit on that side of the ball, for their standards anyway.  As in they only score 30 pts or so.  The bigger wild card to me is how the OSU offense handles the Clemson defense and whatever Venables cooks up.  Could be a 45-31 Buckeyes win, could be a 14-31 Buckeyes loss, or anywhere in between.  I just see a bigger variance in the possibilities of that matchup than I do with this one.

OSU is not going to shut down their offense, but I definitely could see them slowing it down enough to get the W, if the offense does its thing.

A lot of people in this thread are saying, basically, "Dabo didn't become a two time national champion coach by being stupid." Which is true, but it might have nothing to do with smarts v. stupidity . . .

Jackson Carman has given up zero sacks this season and only 10 total pressures the entire season. Obviously, he has not faced a DE anywhere near the caliber of Chase Young. But what happens if Dabo goes to his star OT, who sees himself as all-world, and says, "We're going to have to double and triple team Chase Young this game or else he is going to destroy you all game long"?

I'd put Chase on Jackson Carmen all day long. 3 sacks 1ff 1fr 5 tfl. Carmen is slow at this point. And if he is facing a speed rusher he starts false starting and reaching. His kick step is one of the worse I've seen. Tyreke Smith over their RT and occassionally their right guard in long passing downs. Would then being in Harrison and have Browning and Malik blitzing from LB attacking the A-gaps. It would throw Clemson off balance on their play design. Then at halftime when they are cooking up their adjustments to help Carmen with chips and doubles I would come out from half and have just back in his natural spot back over the RT.

As a staff and an offense there’s no reason to change anything you’re doing until circumstances force you to. You’ve won 28 in a row and played some pretty talented defensive linemen in the playoff the last several years.

I've been pretty confident this would be the case all along as it normally is with elite teams, especially in college. I think it would've been a bigger problem for LSU bc they go 5 wide so much with an empty backfield and no help. Look at how Wisconsin and Penn State played Chase. Chase was killing teams but they played him relatively straight up. Why? Well they though, "oh well we are better than Miami of Ohio and Cincinnati. That won't happen to us, we just need to play our game." A few weeks later Penn State literally said pregame we are just gonna let him play normal and we are gonna have to counter him by making plays. This was a general miscalculation on their part bc making plays on Ohio State is incredibly difficult and Chase Young makes a LOT of plays that you have to counter.

Now you look at how Michigan treated it because they finally understood, "hey guys we played penn state and wisconsin and they are pretty good at football and this dude absolutely smoked them." They knew that they had to stop him at all costs and so did Wisconsin bc they watched what happened the first time.

I think that Clemson is basically going to assume that "he can't do that to us." This will be a major issue and its just an ego thing. The key for them is that they need to have plans in case, you know, he's just insane and kills them too. If they have answers he'll be an issue for a bit and then they get into a different set. If they don't Chase Young can end a game with 4 sacks and shut down the entire offense at times. I would be surprised if Chase isn't a key factor early. If he is also a key factor late Clemson is gonna have some issues. They'd be a lot better off IMO selling out to protect and playing undermanned downfield.

Remember those first 3 or 4 games where we were just ruining the QB's game after game. I can see Trevor hobbling off with that same defeated look.

My memory is hazy, but I'm hoping for something like the opening drive of the OSU/Miami game in 2002 where Tim Anderson (I think) went right up the middle from the tackle position and kicked the shit out of Dorsey ... kind of set the tone for the rest of the night.  Miami was like.. wtf was that?  May the same happen to Clemson.
