Ohio State's Standing As Potential No. 1 Seed in College Football Playoff Remains Strong with Just One Week to Go

OSU doesn't fear anyone, let alone Clemson. It's silly that people keep saying that. They play in the ACC, the best team they played was 7-5 A&M, and could have, at a minimum, went to OT against UNC, if UNC chose to play it that way. Uva will be the BEST team they have played all year this weekend (OSU has played 6 teams rated higher than UVA according to SP+). I'm sure Clemson is praying OSU ends up #1, so they can play LSU instead. Who would want to face this OSU juggernaut in the first round?

I agree.  People saying “no one wants to play Clemson”....no, no one wants to play Ohio State.

Ever since the SEC-bias media realized that Alabama wasn't going to make the playoffs (based on their mediocre play and fluffy schedule the entire year), they started this new narrative about how "no one wants to play Clemson."  WHY NOT?!  their schedule is even more cupcake than Bamas.  if anything, it is an advantage to play them.  You'll be the first good team they play.  the chance of beating them is higher than being the second good team to play them.

Florida being ranked in the top 10 is a desparate attempt to boost the rankings of Georgia, and nothing more.  The only 2 ranked teams that they played, they lost.  Every other opponent that they have played is on part with non-Clemson ACC opponents.  GTFU out of here with this B.S.

Florida did win at home vs Auburn but, other than that, its resume is very weak.  They struggled early in the season against the likes of Miami and Kentucky, and also played 2 FCS teams this season.  There is no way they should be ahead of Penn State, in my opinion, and I think there's a fair argument that a team that's played 2 FCS teams should incur some sort of poll penalty.

Root for LSU to win a close one. And Baylor and Utah to win big. Clemson losing could possibly put Utah and Baylor/ Oklahoma in. Path of least resistance.

HS

They have had such an easy strength of schedule too in comparison though!

If Clemson loses this weekend, I'd say they should definitely not make the playoff cut.  Having said that, I expect them to win by a score like 55-14.

I agree that Clemson's schedule is absolutely pathetic but, then again, it was quite terrible last year too, and that didn't stop them from steamrolling Alabama in the title game by 4 TDs.  They'll get the benefit of the doubt until they lose.

I also think if Cincinnati wins that's huge because it will keep ranked wins as 4 to 3 compared to LSU.

Unfortunately, I think UGA is overrated, and LSU will romp.  UGA only managed 19 points at home against A&M two weeks ago.  Not sure why they continue to get so much hype.

This special season that we are witnessing is nothing less than a sight to behold. Couldn't have wrote a better script. Just realized that this has completely washed the taste out of my mouth that was Game of Thrones season 8. This will easily be something I will cherish the rest of my life. All I can say is thank you for blessing us with this. Remember when we weren't even projected to be in the top 3 of the B10? Who's laughing now....

Maybe. Committee has typically not punished teams who lose CCGs. Which is fair when you think about it. Cincy will not be dropping 5 spots for losing in a true road game to a higher ranked soon to be 12-1 team. It would reward teams who didn't even play, which is typical poll stuff.

Likewise, I wouldn't expect Wisc to fall out of the top 10 either.

You guys understand once LSU beats underrated #4 Georgia this will change.....unfortunately I disagree, as I think georgia is a joke at #4 so get ready for us to be facing Clemson In the first round... I see what the committee honestly trying to do they’re trying to set it up for a Clemson vs another sec team in the title game once again, just got to hope we can knock off clemson in the first round, which I believe we can but it will be very tough yes there schedule has been pitiful but they play the same teams every year and dominate in the playoffs, this years Clemson looks the best they’ve ever looked beating there schedule with a loaded roaster, and Dabos already playing the disrespected underdog roll to get his team to play with a chip which I do not like they’re playing right into the media’s hands of feeling disrespected to build a chip on there shoulder, but In a way that can be an advantage for us as well knowing we owe them revenge and hearing dabos little rant how they should be ranked #1.

I think if anything the committee is trying to keep OSU at 1... jumping Wisconsin up to 8 and only dropping UM 1 spot are both boosts to OSUs resume, while dropping Bama all the way to 12 takes a top 10 win away from LSU. The committee has screwed OSU plenty of times, but this certainly isn't one of those times.

Take care of business Saturday and we stay at 1, barring LSU laying a 59-0 style game on UGA (in which case they'd deserve to jump us)

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

HS
Bukirob's picture

I disagree.  LSU's over all ranked wins would be 4, 9,11,12  OSU would have 8,8,10,14 and upper teens (since UC is 20 now a win over Memphis gets them around 16 or so)   Sure, they have slightly better rankings but last time I checked 5 > 4

You WIN with people.

Same. I had heard the the #1 seed got the "geographically closer" semi-final, but not that they actually got to state a preference. Honestly I think we'd have a majority "home" crowd at either location but if they get a preference I'd kinda like them to pick the Fiesta Bowl for the home-away-from-home familiarity

Also I love the irony  of "yes we'd like to play in the opposite corner of the country please so that we can have a bigger home crowd"

HS

I also think day should do what that scum bag dabo did for recruiting about urban retiring, and making it a guess I don’t think dabo will be at Clemson for very much longer, his ala mater his bama and I think nick sabans days of coaching is coming to a end, I just saw it during the auburn game he’s in his 70s he’s getting old they’re starting to head to a major decline I predict next year will be sabans final year after losing a couple games and dabo will obviously take over the Alabama program.

after thinking about it, and of course assuming a Buckeye victory, I want Georgia to beat LSU and to move to 3rd with Clemson 2nd.  That would leave the committee with a choice of possibly 2 one-loss conference champs and a second place team.  Do they take LSU (who lost in the CCG), Oklahoma/Baylor, or Utah

Sorry Joe.  Glad you did great down in Baton Rouge, but it's now show time.

LSU is in even if they lose.  They will have more quality wins than Utah, Oklahoma, or Baylor (even after a conference championship), and their only loss will be to #3 Georgia.  I'd rather that the SEC not get two teams in, so I'll be rooting for Jeaux.

OTOH Georgia doesn't scare me at all.  They would score maybe 10 points against us.

HS
buckeye phi's picture

I think it's significant that they have Utah ranked ahead of Oklahoma.  So, assuming LSU, Utah and Oklahoma all win this Saturday, the Sooners would have to leapfrog a victorious Utah team in order to make the top four.  Naturally that's a taller order than if their positions were reversed.  And while the committee claims they look at everything anew each week, we all know that isn't really true.

As far as we're concerned, I agree with those who are saying it doesn't really matter who we play first.  If I thought one of the other two qualifiers might be able to beat up Clemson a little for us in the title game, that'd be a factor - since Clemson will be coming into the playoff very healthy (due to the fact they've played virtually nobody).  But I don't really see LSU or Utah (or Oklahoma) doing that.

But remember - in 2014-15, we beat a pretty darn good 'Bama team in the semifinal before crushing a much weaker Oregon in the "final".  I'm OK with that kind of scenario this time as well -

Exactly what I've been thinking the last few days. All this fear of playin Clemson in the semi's has me scratching my head...  we are battle tested and have better stats with a MUCH tougher schedule. They might be real good, but they might just be pretty good; like Wisky, Penn State and scUX. And we know how that turned out.  Let's pay them back for Fiesta Bowl and move on to thank Jeaux for his service as a Buckeye by beating the crap out of LSU!

...and.you would have more time to prepare for a first round Clemson, rather than a one week turnaround. After their weak schedule Clson might not be prepared for facing an elite, playoff caliber team in the first round.

HS
Calibuckeyefan1's picture

This. Im fine with playing Clemson in the semifinals. Beat Dabo. Get it over with.  We are battle tested and can play with anyone.    Utah is legit so it might not be as easy as ppl think it will be. This is a way more physical team than Oregon 2014. Their D is nasty and they have an efficient running QB like JT Barrett.

Either way, Ohio State will have to play it’s A game to move to the final.

Make Clemson play two great teams in a row, us being the second. They haven’t played two great, physical teams all year, alone two in a row. Let them get banged up and sore a little, like us playing PSU, TTUN, and Whisky back to back to back. Go Bucks

LSU’s defense made a statement by holding Texas A&M to just seven points and 169 yards in a 50-7 Tigers win this past weekend

The one thing I’m slightly worried about is their defense improving, feeling the need to prove doubters wrong.

HS

Really?  You should go back and look at what we did to the 7 - 4 teams that we played!

Year for what?

HS
PhillyBuckeye27's picture

Anyway we can avoid Clemson in the first game is fine with me. I don’t prescribe to the theory they haven’t played anybody - they played their schedule. And yes the ACC is a dumpster fire so there is that argument, but Clemson has played very well as of late. If this holds - Clemson beats LSU.

I’m surprised the committee would put us in ATL and LSU and Clemson out in Tempe. But it’s good to see.

HS

I think they would if the 4 seed was Utah or Oklahoma. That would give Ohio State more of a home field advantage.

I wish people stopped bringing up Michigan in threads unrelated to them. They are an also ran. They are irrelevant. We basically do them a huge favor by treating them as a rival. Because Ohio State is so well respected nationally, this is the only thing that legitimizes a mediocre program whose glory days went the way of leather helmets.

Now, going back to the topic, there’s a good chance LSU jumps is in the final CFP poll. If we beat Wisconsin too bad, Wisconsin will fall out of the top 10 hurting our standing. If the game is too close then LSU’s victory over Georgia looks more impressive as Georgia will still likely be ranked higher than both Wisconsin and Penn State. This looks like a lose/lose scenario to me. Nevertheless, there’s nothing wrong with a No.2 seed and drawing Clemson to our side of the semifinals. Clemson hasn’t beaten anybody so no reason to be afraid of them. I’d very much like the opportunity to beat Clemson (after so many bowl losses to them) en route to a NC.

Come one man. Do you really think if we beat the breaks off of a top ten team again they will drop us to two? It's all about eye test at this point. Ohio state is adding another top ten team this weekend along with LSU and we already have more ranked wins. The only way LSU moves ahead of us is if they beat Georgia 59-0 and we beat wisconsin by less than a touchdown or lose.

There are no more CFP rankings.

The CFP committee only has two more jobs - select the Top 4 for the CFP and the contestants for the other NY 6 bowl games.

HS
Blue Eyed Buckeye's picture

The committee has fine-tuned their rankings so they can pretty much do whatever they want.

They've set it up where they can make either LSU or Ohio State #1. And they can pick Georgia, Utah, or Oklahoma for the 4th spot.

Basically it's all wide open and the only real rankings of the year are this upcoming week.

HS
Ole Buckeye's picture

I seriously don't care where the Bucks are ranked, as long as they are in the CFP.

In 2014 we might have hoped to play FSU first,  but we drew Alabama and that worked out f***ing awesome!

It was hilarious driving to work in Ann Arbor this morning, listening to these three old dudes (my age, actually) who are on 1130 The Fan after 8 a.m.  They went through a long explanation about why and how the CFP committee was keeping Michigan, Wisconsin and Cincinnati, etc., highly ranked to make Ohio State's SOS look better and everything... "because they want to keep Ohio State #1".  Never said why in the world the CFP would want Ohio State #1....???!!

They're really grasping at straws to explain the deep chasm that the Wolverine football program has fallen into.

Of course the other two old dudes agreed with him. Then they started talking about how their new hope is that Harbaugh walks away, so he doesn't have to be fired.
