Anyone Have a KJ Hamler Update??

He hasn’t been cleared as of yet, at least according to Franklin so he’s pretty clearly still in concussion protocol.

As with all concussions, who knows. I’m guessing if he’s marginally close, he’ll play, but with concussions, the team docs are a little more stringent on who suits up.

I have bowled at the 6 baby blue lanes of Hamler.  I spent my hard earned field money on the Henry county polka fests way back in the day.

I don't know about Hamler but I think Vegas just see what a lot of people see and that is that Ohio State is a 3 score better football team than Penn State.

I want to believe that but given the recent history of this matchup and where PSU is ranked 19 points seems awfully big.  That may be the biggest spread this year between 2 top 10 teams playing each other.

Hamler would be a big blow. Not that I think the final outcome would change, but the only way to beat a top-level defense, is to hit big plays, when the defense does make a rare mistake. Hamler is that guy.

Elliott dots the eye, on this national championship win.

Like I said in another thread, he will play, Franklin would make him play if he was able to use a walker.

Is it up to him, or up to doctors?

HS

Doctors. Franklin has no say in it.

That sounds like a great way for Franklin to turn himself into the next Brady Hoke in State College lol. If the kid doesn't feel right he shouldn't force him to play, plain and simple.

According to BTN last night, he was listed as a starter by PSU.  Give Franklin some credit.  He could have played the "game time decision"  or the doubtful or probable card.  But, he did not.  He listed him as a starter.  GO BUCKS!

Hamler is playing. To even think he isn’t is ridiculous.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS

I would be shell-shocked if Hamler was out. I mean, I realize that you cannot fuck around with concussions, and it's a process that needs to be thorough. But unless if he got absolutely smashed like Damarious Randall hit on the Steelers WR, I have to believe he'll play. Plan on him playing. I still think the 19 point spread is insane.

Our objective is simple: to make the state of Ohio proud.

HS
BeaverOhioBuckeye's picture

I watched the play that knocked him out last week it was nasty and he was dumped on his head. so who knows and Franklin has came under fire with the way he's handled players in the past.

HS

read in another thread that hamler's instagram said he was locked and loaded...  guess that means he'll play...

HS

In another thread BuckeyePat said:

Friend of mine runs the military recruiting on penn State campus. Said he attended practice yesterday and Hamler is the real deal. 100% ready to go. Buckeyes need to tackle well and shut him down

K.J. Hamler, meet Jeff Okudah. I think our secondary is more up to the task this year than they were a year ago. They just need to watch for the gadget plays with him and make sure under no circumstance whatsoever is Hamler to be isolated against Tuf Borland.

K.J. Hamler, meet Jeff Okudah.

I have a feeling based on Hamler primarily playing in the slot that they'll have Wade matched up on him most of the day. Which is fine by me, so long as we don't see another repeat of 90-whatever (99?) yard pass for Hamler v. Wade the way we did last year. I think Wade has grown leaps and bounds since that game.

I would love if they gave Okudah the sole responsibility for Hamler, I just don't believe they'll put Okudah at Nickel for the day.

HS
Das Hufeisen's picture

Well Isaiah Pryor took Wade out of the 90 yard TD play last year IIRC. So much more faith in our defense this year.

HS

He will play. He is a good player for sure, but I am not that worried about him. Particularly if there is a good pass rush. Hard to imagine many guys beating that secondary consistently. He will get catches but limit him and there you go.

HS
buckeyenut74's picture

Defense needs to lay the wood to him, but don’t play dirty. We know psu plays dirty. Hope fields has an eye shield on his face mask.

No offense to Fields or Dobbins, but Hamler is the best gamebreaker on the offensive side on Saturday. Dude is very challenging to stop and can open up the QB run, which OSU is highly susceptible to (at least, Rutgers was able to do it). If he can't go, that puts a ton of pressure on PSU QB play and I think OSU feasts.

HS
SackMan's picture

No offense to you, but you're just wrong. Fields will show you why on Saturday.

HS
Chuckeye Buck's picture

(at least, Rutgers was able to do it)…...against our 3rd & 4th string. FIFY

HS
bd2999's picture

Considering he has been held in check by lesser teams this year. At least Pitt and some others did a good job with him. Minnesota beat them with a less talented roster.

And where is this highly susceptible stuff coming from? Are you basing that on the Rutgers game? They had like 2.8 yards rushing. They had a few successful plays against a vanilla defense without some of their talent going.

It is like we forgot all about Adrian Martinez as a running QB when it suits us. They owned him outside of one play.

PSU is a dangerous team, but they are a good team. They will get yards, but you are exagerating a great deal. Anybody who takes things away from the Rutgers game with that nonsense is. Highly susceptible is the slant route last year or outside runs. This team has not had any of that. A few "big runs" here or there of like ten or fifteen.

HS
PhillyNut's picture

Rutgers got one run of note by the qb against the 1st team and it went for 21 yards.  His other 9 rushes got him another 21 yards total. Hardly makes them susceptible.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

HS
keith7456's picture

Yeah, people are way overreacting to what Rutgers did.

One TD was on a 33 yard drive after a muffed put and another one was on a 20 yard drive after a fumble by our third QB against our 3 string D with 1 min to go in the game.

I've got an update: as of right now, Hamler still represents something like 45% of Penn State's receiving yards and 60% of their receiving touchdowns this season.

Shut him down and the Penn State passing game effectively does not exist.

We've seen this movie before--Penn State has a decent QB whose primary strategy is the arm punt and a single transcendent playmaker whose individual quality paper over what is otherwise a mediocre offense. Only this time Ohio State has a much better defense than either of the last years.

"porque las estirpes condenadas a cien años de soledad no tenían una segunda oportunidad sobre la tierra."

Yup.

Jeff Okudah on line one...

HS
keith7456's picture

With the new teaching of our DBs to look for the ball we should do a better job defending the arm punts. I'm expecting at least 2 INTs with one being pick-sixed.

I'm expecting Wade to be following Hamler around the field with Fuller helping out over top. Okudah and Arnette can shut down their other receivers. Would expect them to have to keep a TE in to help block Young because they aren't going to let Young sack their QB with their RB this year.

One thing about hamler deep is Clifford throws a rainbow arm punt deep where hamler has to slow down to catch it.

Clifford rarely hits him in stride. I worry more about the jet sweeps and short passes.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

On the jet sweeps and short passes - a LB'ers job is to punish him - legally of course.

HS
youra6's picture

I saw him throw a HUGE sissy fit when the PSU defense gave up that big play against Indiana close to the end of the game. Like dude. Calm yourself; its not your job to be concerned what the defense does. You focus on your job, let the defensive coordinator get in his player's ears.

Just bad leadership imo.

HS

HS
BuckeyeFella's picture

It is 100% the job of the starting quarterback to be concerned with what the defense does, and it is understandable for him to be disappointed when they don’t perform well. That does not show bad leadership.

HS
youra6's picture

I didnt see the defense venting and crying over all the 3 and outs the Penn State offense put on display last week.

HS
Brandon26841's picture

I was surprised by that. I don't think I've ever really seen that before. Rubbed me the wrong way for sure, and it would probably rub the defense the wrong way as well. You don't usually see guys react like that, even when the other unit of the team is an absolute dumpster fire. Are they thinking it? Of course. But yeah... that was a bad look.

We showed a vulnerability between the tackles last week.  I think that was somewhat intentional for the worst play caller in the B1G to witness.  Popcorn ready.  I hope the injury is only temporary but spectacular to witness.  I am thinking of #47 filling the lane and bringing the hurt.

HS
WorthyBuck's picture

He will play and it will not matter one bit.

HS
lljjgg's picture

I'm feeling the same way. I think much like last year, he'll get away from a tackle once and get a TD that frustrates you, but otherwise not a huge impact on the game. He had 3 catches for 45 yards aside from that one game-breaking 93 yard TD catch; I just don't see that one happening this year, but he is too good a player not to get at least one TD. But one TD won't make or break the game for OSU.
