Skull Session: Justin Fields Absurd Touchdown to Interception Ratio, Comparing Mac Jones to Cardale Jones, and Comparing 2019 Georgia to 2002 Ohio State

I have to say that my first thought when I read “skull helmets” took me to Dr. Evil and meat helmets. I wish I knew why that was-maybe it is a lack of sleep. Whatever the case, pretty weird protection from spirits or whatever to use a dead kids’ skull to adorn another kid’s burial.

There may be parallels between UGA and the 02 champs, but that home loss to mediocre South Carolina is one huge difference. Had the Bucks lost to Illinois or Purdue they would not have sniffed the national championship game, while Georgia has a realistic shot to at least make the playoff. I can’t stand Kirby, but anyone other than Bama for once would be fine with me.

GA gets in as SEC Champ, but if they lose that game they don't have a prayer.  The committee has always taken undefeated P5 teams, then choosen from 1 loss teams, it's going to be a minute before they have to consider 2 loss teams.

The bigger question is: If Georgia beats LSU in the SEC CG and it is a one-score game, does the committee put both into the CFP?

HS
Berg2004's picture

Without a doubt.  LSU has one of the best resumes and won't be left out for losing to the SEC champ.  They would move LSU to 4, UGA to 3, Clemson at 2, and Ohio State at 1.

HS
MichiBuck12's picture

I don't get all the fuss over whether Georgia gets in to the playoff or not. If they win out and beat LSU in the SEC title game, obviously they get it in. If they lose that game and finish with two losses, obviously they don't. I keep hearing "will Georgia be the second SEC team in the playoff this year". No. They will either be the first SEC team or they won't get in at all. And no Herbie, you cannot debate whether that was pass interference or not. It was and it wasn't even close. There was also a hold and a facemask on Miami on that very same play.

HS

Its because they get the SC loss at home as a mulligan and the bucks havent gotten a mulligan the last 2 seasons.  Thats why.

Losing by 14 in week 2 is still not the same as losing by 30 points. If we had lost to Purdue by 2 in double OT we would have gone in 2018.

2017 we had 2 losses (one by 30 to an average team), which through 5 years no team with 2 losses has ever made the playoff so we don't really have much of an argument there either.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

HS

I'm pretty sure Neil is referring to the 2015 team (the defending 2014 Champs) losing by 3 at home to Michigan State. Not 2017 or 2018 when they lost by significant margins on the road.

HS
MichiBuck12's picture

I don't know that its a mulligan necessarily. A one loss conference champion should be in. It was more wrong that we didn't last year than it would be if they do this year. Granted, last year also had 3 undefeated teams and Notre Dame threw a wrench into things.

i don't see how it's a given that georgia gets in over a 1-loss oregon team. if it is "a given" - then the playoff system is a sham since the sec seems to get a "benefit of the doubt" that no other conference gets.

and i definitely don't get people saying the loser of the sec title game is going to get in over a 1-loss pac12 champ.

And the game should have never gone to OT as Chris Gamble was held on third down with about 2-3 minutes left in the 4th quarter.  We get that call we don't punt and Miami likely doesn't get a late FG to tie. So the interference call in OT is a moot point.

Of all people, Herbie is contributing to the narrative that there needs to be a caveat next to our win bc of that penalty. Even hearing this from someone like Feinbaum would be insulting but for Herbie to be saying this as well? This has to be one of the most overrated non-stories ever. The only thing that made it at all controversial was that the ref had the balls to make the correct call with the stakes so high and the game on the line. It was absolutely the right call, the ref who made it stands by it fervently, and the rest are just a bunch of complainers who have nothing else to complain about. Great post, Michibuck. Wishing you all the best.

Back in my day if I wanted some strange I had to go out into the world and convince a girl to sleep with me while armed with nothing but my own wit. Now you can just message a thousand girls at once and pick from the ten that respond. Not to wade into social issues here but is it really shocking that respect between men and women is at an all time low when the most intimate of interactions is nothing more than a social transaction thats easier to order than a pizza?

Actually, I met my wife online 16 years ago in a crazy set of events.  During Arizona's largest forest fire, an animal rescue org I volunteered at headed into the area to rescue stranded animals. My dog of 16 years passed away the same day I rescued a sickly puppy, which I later adopted. The group heard the whole story and decided to put it in their newsletter. The picture they took for the article was of me holding this sickly puppy and it was a killer photo so I immediately posted it in my online profile. The next day, my soon to be significant other hit me solely because of that photo.... she had been ignoring my profile for over 8 months! The rest is history!  I realize the apps have changed, but 16 years back... BINGO!

I remember when Ohio State — in 2002, they had a team that they would win every game by a touchdown or three points.

Welcome to the world of the narrative. Because "every game" wasn't a touchdown or less. Demonstrably false.

They did have to fight in some games. That would be normal. Except this year. And even then, it wasn't like Michigan State and Wisconsin were push overs.

You wouldn't expect Herbstreit to actually do his research would you? I know I've been on his case a lot this past week but this is the exact kind of thing I've been talking about. He's just so damn lazy. Yes the Buckeyes played some close ones that year. But they also played some not so close ones. Like pretty much every championship team ever. Its just that the close ones everybody remembers years later. Mainly Cincinnati, Purdue, and Penn State. Nobody remembers stomping out Texas Tech in the opener or 3 TD win over top 10 Washington State, or 31 point win over a ranked Minnesota. But Kirk couldn't be bothered to actually do the research to actually come up with a quality comparison, he just repeats the narrative he's heard and then pretends like he's providing some revolutionary insight. He's such a clown.

Unless you’re lying to yourself, that year did have a lot of close games...several against bad teams. We also looked very good against quality opponents as well, but that year was a roller coaster of emotions and blood pressure. There’s no narrative being pushed here, I’m not sure why you’re tying to make that the case...it’s not a terrible take at all(he’s had worse). John Oliver did an interesting piece on forensic evidence and how easy it is for us to assume it is 100% certain when often it isn't.  Among other examples he used hair analysis as an example of something that has been accepted in the past, but has been found to be rather less reliable.  Of course, since it has been accepted in the past and our legal system works on precedent...

I'm going off of old memory, but I'm pretty sure DA's have pretty strong protection against that kind of thing.  They don't have to cross to high of a threshold of doing their job in something approaching good faith.  Same kind of legal protection cops get.  It isn't absolute, but it can certainly give someone looking to sue pause.

HS
Wargor's picture

I'll give them a chance, but Alabama's defense isn't playing lights out these days.

At the end of the day though, I highly doubt they are going to put up anything close to 59-0 against a 10-2 division champion ranked 13th by the committee to secure their 12th win and by so doing, win their conference.

Reason 1:  It'd be only their 11th win.
Reason 2:  Auburn will only be a presumed 8-3
Reason 3:  Auburn seems very unlikely to be ranked 13th or higher.  They are 12th before the third loss.
Reason 4:  Auburn will not have won, or be second in their division.
Reason 5:  By winning, Alabama will not have won a conference or a division.
Reason 6:  Yeah, I just don't see them putting up anything close to 59-0 against a defense that held LSU to 23.  Admittedly, I didn't see us putting up 59 on Wisconsin that year either.

HS
Kurt's picture

I watch a lot of Auburn football.  The offense is awful, right up until Gus figures out how to string together the right 3 plays.  Then they can catch fire.  Thing is in the Iron Bowl, Auburn's defense is performing much better than Alabama's.  I expect the game could be similar to Auburn's game vs LSU.  Alabama with the superior offense that Auburn will try to drag into the mud.  It'll be a question of Auburn's offensive output, field position (if only a couple first downs can land Auburn in field goal range), and special teams.

All I want at this point is for Alabama to not make the playoff.  I absolutely hate in this playoff format that two teams from the same conference can get in.

HS
NavyBuckeye91's picture

Bama's problem now isn't the offense.  Tua got all the press, but the Tide lost two more D linemen inthe Miss State game.  Their front seven has been decimated, and if Auburn gets their crazy-ass Malzahn offense rolling, Bama's gonna be in for a long day at the office.

I was in the second row at that game.  right next to the play.  The ref should have called holding instead of pass interference. That's pretty cool. I'd guess those are the same 22 Miami fans that attend present day home games.

I was at that game too.  Was 10:1 Buckeye fans.  Canes fans were decent people.  Think they were more in awe than anything after that game.  Weren’t Canes like 25-0 in last 25 games and defending Nationals champs

That South Dakota ad campaign of "Meth. We're on it" is so unbelievably hilarious.  It only took one person to say, "You know, maybe this isn't such a good idea".  And apparently no one did. LOL.

Edit: I should add that it also distracts from a presumably sincere attempt to deal with a serious problem.  And that's going to get lost.

I’m never a fan of the annual push to put two SEC teams in the playoffs every year.  But I do think it’s absolutely hysterical now Bama isn’t one of the teams they are arguing for.

Speaking of a Bama, I’d prefer the Can’t Guard Mike shirt if it was his circus catch from Evan Spencer in the Sugar Bowl.

Go Bucks! Beat Penn State!

if Mac Jones was in Cardale Jones' galaxy in terms of talent, we would know by now given that's started an entire game this very season.

But hey, let's toss around the low-hanging comparison.

Man, talk about lazy takes. It’s easy to crow about Cardale’s accomplishments in hindsight but we had absolutely no clue what he was capable of doing going into that Wisconsin game. In order for the comparison to be fair, the Joneses need to be weighed on the same scale at the same time in their careers. Dust off the old threads and I’ll bet there were a lot of people gnashing their teeth and freaking out going into that game. Try not to forget that Cardale had been jumped by Barrett on the depth chart 10 days prior to the season opener when Braxton was sidelined for the season, and heading into Indy, he had completed 10 of 17 passes for 118 yards and zero TDs and rushed 34 times for 215 yards and zero TDs and, unlike Mac Jones, he had never started a game. He was twice as likely to run it than throw it. Buckeye Nation's confidence in Cardale was guarded at best, probably at the same level Alabama fans are now.

I think we all are under the assumption that three teams are already in. Clemson, LSU, Buckeyes. I assume both Clemson and Buckeyes make it but not sold on LSU. Their defense gives up a bunch of points and UGA has been to SEC Championship game and lost to LSU last year by 20. Might be a revenge game. Also stay up for the PAC12 games, Oregon and Utah (winner) should make it in as well and Oregon plays good enough defense to cause problems if their offense can get rolling.

HS

If Bama beats Auburn by 59, there is a comparison to be made to Cardale. Until then, there isn’t.
If Georgia wins all of their games including beating LSU, there is a comparison to be made. Until then, there isn’t.  It also helped 2002 OSU that they only needed to be flawless once, against Miami.  Under playoff model, they would have needed to do it twice, once with Miami and before that with some other high-ranked team. Much as I want to believe they would have still gotten it done, it’s far from certain.
And Herbie going there about the PI/holding call, of which replay confirms there were both.  With the hundreds of close, big games where a penalty in the final moments loomed large in the outcome, I think the one in that game has been allowed to remain in question like no other. Really bad form by Herbie to suggest it’s still debatable.

"Woody would have wanted it that way"

HS
NavyBuckeye91's picture

Everyone seems to think Herbstreit is saying that there wasn't PI.  I didn't take it that way at all.  I think he's recognizing the lunatic fringe of Miami fans who claim there wasn't, but dispelling that as an insignificant point based on the way OSU played that game.

To put 2002 Ohio State and 2019 Georgia in the same sentence is lazy and uninspired.  They in no way resemble one another.  The reason Ohio State often struggled against teams in 2002 was because Maurice Clarrett was often hurt and couldn't play.  When he did play, they pretty much thrashed the opposition.  Lydell Ross and Maurice Hall were nowhere near MoC's talent, and the drop off in ability and vision when they were on the field dramatic.  Contrast to Georgia...Georgia has no injuries in their backfield, and have a world class stable of RBs, any one of which could start on any other team in the SEC.  Also, Jake Fromm is WAY better than Craig Krenzel.  It's not even close.  How Krenzel kept those Buckeyes alive with his legs was more miraculous than talent-based...no one can really dispute this.

Some irony....one of the debates on sports talk TV and radio in November of 2002 was whether or not a 1-loss Georgia should play Miami instead of undefeated Ohio State.

Anyone remember Trev Alberts back in 2002?  Gosh he was the worst.  Like Mark May before Mark May came about.  Just an absolute OSU troll.

He was one of those "Ohio St shouldn't even be in this game, they have no right being on the same field as Miami...they have NO chance" all through the bowl season that year.

The one regret I had from attending that awesome game was that I wasn't able to see Trev Alberts eat crow afterward.  Oh well, great memories.

PS - I just googled him and he's the AD at Nebraska now...the  more you know :)

What is the deal with Herbstreit's love affar with Georgia? I mean they could lose by 20 to LSU and he'll still make a case for them in the top 4. I know his kids are at Clemson but maybe UGA has some dark secrets about Herbie they're holding on to.
