I would guess RB and QB and we're done. Maybe a surprise 3rd but thats it.

If Hilliard and Saunders come back, those ships have to be saved. Also, with McCullough graduating, wasn't his younger brother promised his scholarship? Perhaps JCooper also takes a redshirt so he can come back healthy. I believe he has played 4 games.

It seems likely that OSU will look closely at the portal or grad transfers to shore a position as well.

Again, there will need  to be early entries and portal moves to accommodate the commitments OSU already has. The 6th year guys and others will require further attrition.

Good point. Strange since we know Bijan is going to.....

And on fourth and one... would you believe?

HS

Miyan Williams had posted something on his Instagram Today saying “committed” in an Iowa state graphic type commitment picture. He has since deleted it. Could that have meant he was reaffirming his commitment?

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

MarShawn Lloyd has been the guy I am surprised a bigger school hasn't been able to detach from SC. SC's season has been a disaster outside of the huge win against UGA. I'd be less surprised if Lloyd were a South Carolina kid but he's a Maryland kid out of DeMatha HS. I know SC offered him early and obviously built a great relationship with him, but there's a good chance he will be playing for a new coach in a couple years.

HS
raiderred's picture

Ehh I’m not a huge Muschamp guy but South Carolina will be a lot better next year. They have had a lot of injuries and are playing a lot of true freshman like their Qb right now. He’s also recruiting really well for them and the sec east is mediocre other than Georgia and Florida being mehh. I’m not sure South Carolina can do much better than what muschamp is doing right now. They aren’t even the best team in their own state and he’s still handling his own on the recruiting trail.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

Maybe. I don't care who is out for them, the loss last week was inexcusable. It's not really about Muschamp being bad, its more about these programs don't have much patience and always think they can do better. If he has a couple .500 type seasons after this season (which is what I think that program generally is) they may move on. Either way, I'm surprised Lloyd doesn't want to be with a bigger program.

HS

Birm recent talking stuff podcast:

  1. Gibbs is very quiet about recruitment(likely why there are differing opinions) but his sources are cautiously optimistic. Gibbs would prefer to stay home but he understands how unique the opportunity it is to be the lone back at an OSU caliber program that focuses on the run. Bama has been focusing on Zach Evans and Georgia is focusing on flipping Don Chaney from Miami. If either miss on those targets they will likely turn to Gibbs. So root for those recruitments to take a long time.
  2. Not too worried about Stroud to Michigan, the interesting thing is Stroud is going to Michigan over Georgia that weekend and part of the reason Justin Flowe was visiting OSU was because Stroud was going to go with him to Georgia
  3. Baron to Tennessee, if they kept losing though we would have had a good shot
HS
huffdaddy's picture

Believe it or not, Tennessee is looking on the upswing - back to 5-5, probably going bowling. They at least have the story to sell, and they aren't firing the coach. So I am pessimistic on Baron.

"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." - Nick Saban 1/2/15.

How we are a 3rd option for RB's behind schools that already have multiple 5-stars on the roster is beyond me.

HS
Triv's picture

Because the kid is from the south and would prefer to stay closer to home if possible, seems pretty cut and dry. Bama just used an RBBC and put the possible NFL OROY in the first round last year in Josh Jacobs, and UGA is an NFL factory at RB. It's not difficult to see why a RB, from that part of the country, would lean towards one of those schools.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

HS
bd2999's picture

To a point I agree but if Gibbs wants to stay in the area it makes sense. I do not really know how Georgia in particular keeps getting five star guys. I get not fearing competition, but being like the third guy on the chart and having that much talent and having to wait up to two or three years before you are the guy. Just surprising.

Who knows?

HS
WoullyBear's picture

I think Saban and now Smart as well are pitching that it's good to be a part of a stable and save mileage on the body. Jacobs, D. Harris and N. Harris at Bama, Michel, Chubb, and Gurley at UGA. Kids are seeing you can make it to the league off of 125 carries a year rather than 250.

If Ann Arbor is a whore, what's Harbaugh for going back to her?

I didn’t read the whole thing but I clicked it and he said he’s “100 percent committed”. So don’t get your hopes up. Hes a good kid, I wish him the best. But his grandparents were the ones who made him stay closer to home. He would probably be a buckeye right now if it weren’t for them.

HS
Ohiofoosball's picture

So awesome when someone's grandparents dictate where their son (check that, grandchild) play college football. Probably my favorite thing about recruiting!

Luckily for them, the trip from Arizona to Austin is a 20 minute car ride! Easy peasy, so makes sense!

HS
youra6's picture

All we have to do is look at the number of Pros we unleash into the league... we stand at #2.

Texas is behind UCLA for god's sake at #22.  Just statiscially speaking, Bijan has a much higher probability of making millions of dollars if he comes to OSU. But I guess that isn't important enough to his grandparents. Oh well.

HS
BuckeyeBulldog's picture

Time to move on basically.
He says he is 100% to Texas, but may take an official to LSU.
Still has conversations, mostly non football, with Day and Alford and some recruits.
He mentioned it would take drastic measures like Herman being fired to reconsider his decision.
Quoted saying we are wasting time chasing him and he seemed upset people thought OSU was back in contention after he mentioned being in touch.

HS
EBBuck03's picture

Well, to be fair, when you say "I'm committed for now" or "we'll see" when asked if he's going to stick with Texas....it causes people to speculate.  Even a teenager should be able to figure that out.  Texas beating K State was big for them here.

HS
Byaaaahhh's picture

It's weird watching a mistake happen in slow motion like this. I bet we see him in the transfer portal sometime soon.

HS
CTBuckeyeFan's picture

We've seen it happen a lot, Darnay Holmes, Marvin Wilson, Jaiden Woodbey and Cam Akers should all be cautionary tales to kids.  Some are just gullible though, what can you do.

HS
Byaaaahhh's picture

Yeah, good point. We all knew those were trainwrecks waiting to happen. It's nothing against the kid or his ability, but everyone knew those programs were not going to be successful. Sometimes it's more about the opportunity than the program but I think Alabama and Ohio State are proving that the program is worth it.

I thought “100% committed“ was a curse of sorts. Almost like being the “dream school.”

HS
EBBuck03's picture

The running backs are going to come our way guys.  There was a lot of turmoil with this team last year and probably a lot of negative recruiting going on from other schools.  It takes time to build relationships.  Now that Day has built a solid foundation and has great culture buzzing in the Woody again, I truly think we're going to land some stud RBs in 2021.  It's really pretty remarkable what Day was able to do recruiting-wise in his first year.  This team is still young and loaded and I really think the 2021 class is going to be lights out.

Paris Johnson, dear gawd. He HAS to be the best Oline prospect in ohio since Pace. Probably the second best of all time actually. He's without a doubt much better than Jackson Carman.

HS
bucks22's picture

I wouldnt say without a doubt.  Jackson Carman is starting for Clemson as a true Sophomore and got a decent amount of playing time last year as a Freshman.

Paris Johnson is a high school senior.

HS
urbansjacket2's picture

Film to film, he is a much better prospect at equivalent stages. It's not a question. Watch the tape.

HS
bucks22's picture

Do I agree that Paris Johnson is better?  Yes.

But to say without a doubt he is much better, in my opinion is wrong.  There is a reason Carman was a 5-star and the 17th ranked overall player in the country and he is showing it by starting for Clemson.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Paris Johnson is 6'7 300 as a HS senior. Jackson Carman was 6'6 340 and blowing up. Johnson has much better feet and conditioning than Carman. Dancing bear vs. hippopotamus.

HS
UrbzRenewal's picture

He's much better at pass protection than Carman was, though probably not college ready yet. They were both equally adept at burying kids in the run game.

HS
buckeye2012's picture

Mike Adams was also a dominant high school player. He dominated the US army game

HS
stxbuck's picture

Mike Adams is probably the second most physically talented OL in the history of tOSU, behind Orlando Pace. He became a 2nd round pick and stuck around for a few years in the NFL despite making Ricky Williams look like a Mormon when it came to cheeba consumption.

HS
Spartan13's picture

Carman was a 5 star for a reason and will probably be a first round pick lets not act like he is a scrub because he spurned the good guys. He was more college ready since he weighed more but Paris has the higher ceiling which is why his rating is higher.

HS
Buckeye06's picture

Ehh 340 isn't necessarily good for a LT.   Read he is up to 355 now, which makes me think that if we get matched up Chase is gonna eat

HS
FootstepsFalco's picture

Now I'm having visions of Chase blowing him up for multiple sacks in the playoffs.  Man, that would be sweet.

Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory... lasts forever.

HS
Ohiofoosball's picture

Never said he's a scrub, just said Paris is better (which he is).

If Paris works hard and stays focused, he has Top 5 pick potential. Carman doesn't.

HS
stxbuck's picture

300-310 is the sweet spot for OL-enough mass to effectively move the pile, no extra blubber to slow them down. I know a former NFL OL who said he would be fined if he got above 305-he wasn’t a natural big boy type who couldn’t get below 325 in a famine.

HS
urbansjacket2's picture

Exactly. Pantoni has said that sweet spot for recruiting OL is actually slightly *under* 300lbs because they want to beef them up the right way.

HS
TobyMagic's picture

Everyone thought we won that exchange, but Carman is starting for Clemson and NPF isn't.. maybe it's a kudos to our depth, I don't know

HS
Drewbdu's picture

Clemson’s weak spot the past few years has been their OL. I think NPF not starting is more because Bowen and Munford are experienced and very good than because NPF isn’t ready.

HS
keith7456's picture

I think that Carman was thought of as being more ready to play early and NPF was thought of to have a higher ceiling but take some time to develop.

The staff knew coming in that NPF was underweight to be a starting big time college tackle and would need to put on some LBs and get stronger, so that probably slowed the development down some.

HS
huffdaddy's picture

jury's still out, but our smugness about the whole thing was misplaced. Carman is a player.

"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." - Nick Saban 1/2/15.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Big difference between “smugness” and “not obsessing continually over an in-state kid who chose differently”.

HS
BbBnD's picture

Claiming 11w commenters didn’t obsess over Carmen after he spurned us must either be a joke or you have very selective memory. We’re still taking about him.

HS
logamaniac's picture

Is he starting at tackle though?  I know he was a guard last year.

he also got yanked from the game against UNC if I remember right

"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." - Nick Saban 1/2/15.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Yet people flip out b/c Carman went out of state. Being in state isn’t a guarantee of anything, just a head start for the home team.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

This cannot be said enough. If a kid wants to go out of state, furthermore, it just makes that head start largely negligible.

HS

HS
osunick1221's picture

BK says Gibbs will NOT be an early enrollee. This is huge for giving us more time.

*ichigan still sucks

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

It doesn't matter if he's going to be an early enrollee. Is he going to sign early in December or in February? Those are two separate things. The first doesn't affect anything except when he steps foot on campus. The second can affect his recruitment.

HS
GetBuckedUp's picture

Yea, if he's signing early it's completely different than not enrolling early. If he signs early it probably betters our chances because Bama and UGA are still going after bigger stars.  Both want Evans and it looks like neither will get him at this moment. When they feel they're officially out both programs will likely turn up the heat on Gibbs. And i wouldn't be surprised to see that happen soon with Evans trending LSU.

The less time the better IMO.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

I agree. I don't think a February signing would be good because then OSU has to make a decision if they want to take Miyan (assuming he's signing in December) and if they do, that likely closes the door on Gibbs. Better to be able to recruit them at the same time and not have to say no to Gibbs because the staff feels they need a RB in the class and don't want to put all their chips on Gibbs.

HS
EBBuck03's picture

Not to be a pessimist, but it also gives Bama and UGA more time to figure out their RB class...and that’s our biggest setback here.

HS
LB U's picture

To be fair, It's hard not to be a pessimist at this point about RB recruiting for this class.

new article on the athletic about CJ Stroud. Seems like a great kid despite a difficult upbringing. The whole article is great, but see below for a snippet on Yurcich and his relationship with Stroud:

“Me and Coach Yurcich, we have some really deep conversations,” Stroud said. “Like he’s asking me about my upbringing and I kind of spilled it on him. Because I feel like with those relationships, like he’s possibly going to be my quarterback coach, or like, one of mine, and I look like I look at those type dudes like a father figure. It’s out of respect to let everyone know how you feel, how you want to be coached, how you want to be talked to as a person.

“He’s one of the only coaches who asked me personal questions about my life outside of football, and we’re almost on the phone every day. I respect people like that, who want to have a personal relationship with someone they don’t even know yet.”

So if you’re wondering why it seems as if Ohio State is in the lead for Stroud, there’s your answer. Real recruiting is about relationships with pure intentions. It’s about caring. It’s not begging some teenager to come play at your school.

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

Nice share!  I love our coaching staff and their approach to recruiting.  When they say this kind of stuff they mean it, and continue to prove it once kids are on campus.  They just don't give lip service like other teams probably do..

Spoke with a guy I work with. His son goes to school with Drennen. Said he wants to go to Alabama but doesn’t think they take him. Most likely will be Kentucky. Ohio State not even on his radar.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

I dunno. Not to derail the thread but Johnson’s offense has nothing to do with Tech’s defensive personnel. The OL was recruited to play the triple option, which usually means they’re undersized, aka the academies. Get some bigger OLs, a decent QB and some receivers and you can be competitive within 1-2 years, especially in the ACC.

Makes sense. He was a pretty big LB coming out of HS. At 6'4-6'5 he should be able to bulk up to 255-265lbs like Hubbard eventually did.

Both Baron Browning and Cade Stover have been working with Jonathan Cooper the last several weeks per Birm on DE. Cade Stover is permanent, Browning is so they can have the best players on the field at the same time. After seeing what Pope and Mitchell have done/can do it makes sense. HS
Drewbdu's picture

I have to expect we'll see another round of Texas decommitments in the next few days. With a pissed off Baylor at home next week, it seems likely Texas will get wrecked again. If there is a time when Bijan would decommit, I think it is in the week after a potential loss to Baylor to make them 6-5.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

The problem, as I understand it, is it’s Bijan’s grandparents who wound need to decommit from Texas and it doesn’t seem like winning was as important to them as proximity.

HS

If winning isn't important but proximity is, he should go to UArizona.

HS

The problem is you’re thinking logically, and the people dictating bijans decision are using zero logic.

its like arguing with an idiot. You could win the argument with facts and logic and they will just say “agree to disagree!”

HS
TomD's picture

I suspect that they expected Texas to win. Before the season, many projected that Texas was on the rise back to national prominence.

Will this change things with Robinson? Might. I'm quite sure that the Buckeyes would welcome Bijan Robinson back with open arms. Does anybody know why Evan Prater hasn't gotten a look for the second QB? He is from Cincinnati Wyoming and committed to UC. 247 has him up to the 5th ranked DT QB and the 100th overall player. I understand we are getting more pocket passer type but I wonder why a perhaps top 10 QB in the country isn't being considered at all. Respect for Fickell?

He also now has the record for most TD in a career I think it is 113. And he got it catching a pass and housing it 78 yards I think. (Side note) Latham Ransom also had 2 receiving TD in the same game. Pretty darn cool to see that.

Herman isn't going anywhere after this year, especially if Erlinger decides to come back. He'll probably shake up his staff. But he's presumably pitched Robinson on playing time as a true freshman, maybe even as a starter. We know it's not beneath him to lie. And Lord knows RB is wide open when you have a converted true freshman QB as your second leading rusher.

Kendall Sheffield is looking like the Michael Thomas of former Buckeye defensive backs

I mean... Michael Thomas is arguably the best WR in the NFL. Kendall Sheffield is arguably a CB2 on one of the NFLs worst pass defenses (He has a 58 coverage grade per PFF, firmly in the "replaceable" category). He's allowed 19 catches on 27 targets this season, good for a 70% completion percentage. I'm not ready to anoint him even a quality starter, let alone a Michael Thomas level player.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

By the comparison, I am simply saying that Sheffield—like Thomas—wasn’t used to his full potential at Ohio State. And I blame their coaches—Zach Smith who sucked as WR coach and Taver Johnson who left a lot to be desired as CB coach.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

HS
BGSUBucksFan's picture

I'm going to back out of this convo after this comment, but come on man. Poster above already explained why Sheffield is far from anyone you should consider a success or even on the way to success. Taver was Sheffield's coach 1 of 2 seasons he was here. And Zach Smith was not the reason Thomas didn't get the ball enough. Thomas was an elite talent while Zach was here, and while I'm convinced that has nothing to do with Zach, it would be a better argument than the one you're trying to make. Anyways, back to recruiting!

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

Sheffield had a higher draft projection after his first season (playing for Coombs when he wasn't even a starter until the Rose Bowl when Denzel Ward sat out but he still had 40 total tackles, nine pass breakups and a forced fumble) than after his second (as a starter under Johnson). If he regressed, was that his fault or, considering how bad our defense was, was he a victim of poor coaching? Granted, he wasn't able to run at the Combine but he was already projected as a mid-round pick prior to that.

Here's one article heading into last year in which the writer speculates he could be OSU's next CB to be drafted in the first round. Here's another and another, even an 11W poll in which 56% believed he was a first round pick. He ended up getting drafted in the fourth round, a mid-round pick just as he was projected.

Again, for those like you who went off the deep end with my comparison to Thomas, I'm not expecting him to be an All Pro, much less the highest paid NFL cornerback, I'm just saying that it looks to me like he wasn't coached properly his senior year at OSU, which is something Damon Arnette has alluded to at least once when he's spoken about how messed up last year was.

Exactly. So they chose Michigan St game over these games?

HS
Smitty516's picture

Nate4Bucks...

to answer your question, Ohio State is normally the most attractive team by far over even over Penn State and ttun. The Game was the first pick and went to FOX. In a usual year, an Ohio State game would be the next pick and I assume they will do this with Ohio State vs. Oregon. For 2019, however, ESPN made the “wise” decision of picking ttun-Notre Lame. CBS made the same mistake of selecting Notre Lame-Georgia over LSU-Bama for their night game, which they are allowed only 1 night game a year with their sec contract. Networks typically don’t like selecting later season games before the season, even for games like Ohio State vs. Penn State, because you never know what teams will underachieve, what injuries might happen, or what surprise teams might pop up for the year they would rather feature. The Game is an exception to this rule, but it will always be the top draw at noon rivalry weekend, even if the teams have a “down” year because it really is the biggest rivalry in all of sports...

with all that said, back to recruiting lol

HS

I think Myers is getting some very bad advice if he's being told to leave after this season. OL, particularly center, is not a position you see guys ever come out as RS Sophomore because they generally are just not NFL ready after such limited playing experience. I think Davis would be making a mistake too, but the depth at guard in the 2020 draft is not very deep so I guess I wouldn't be totally shocked.

They will all come back and we will have one of the best OL out there with Munford, Harry Miller, Myers, Davis, NPF/Johnson Jr/Jones

Absolute joke if any of those 3 come out early -- but happens at OSU MORE THAN ANYWHERE ELSE in the country -- we have guys leave early to be 4-5 round picks all the time, lol -- ridiculous -- J. Marshall left early and WAS NOT DRAFTED!!

None of those guys mentioned are 'NFL-ready' and will be losing Millions of dollars by being late 3rd - 5th round picks, when if return to OSU and improve stock could be late 1st-2nd round picks the following year

HS
STU10's picture

Because of the absurdity of so many OSU players 'leaving early' for the NFL B/C the OSU covering Media or fans put it in their heads and they end up being 4th-5th round picks -- totally absurd -- unless you get a 'sur-fire' 1st-2nd round grade from NFL scouts, you should not be leaving early as a RS Sophomore, seriously...ridiculous...

Quick money grab, that ends up leaving tons of $$ on table if stay/improve draft stock and move up 2-3 rounds following year....

1. Who is likely to be the next commit (2020 and 2021)?

2. When will we start to see movement on the 2022 front?

3. What positions do you see being priorities with attrition (transfers, draft etc...) in the next two (three?) classes?

4. How do you see the transfer portal being utilized in the near future?

5. Who is the QB of the future after Fields?

6. If you were a scout how would you evaluate a certain position? (lets quiz your fball knowledge)

Feel free to answer all or only some of these questions, just trying to get the discussion moving back in the right direction.

HS
Ludwig Yards's picture

What positions do you see being priorities with attrition (transfers, draft etc...) in the next two (three?) classes?

I'd think defensive line. Both due to the fact that its a super important position and because we are going to have a lot of draft eligible/3rd year + dlinemen again in 2020. QB is always going to be a priority too.

Who is the QB of the future after Fields?

As of today, you almost have to say Miller since he's the guy closest to actually being in the program. I've read where some folks think McCord is going to be the next star here though.

Who is likely to be the next commit (2020 and 2021)?

This will disappoint the star chasers, but Miyan Williams.

HS
Attack51's picture

1. Who is likely to be the next commit (2020 and 2021)? I thought Latham was a possibility but with him recently dropping a Top 10 doesn't seem to be close. Also felt good about Adeleye since he said going to the game wasn't affecting his decision, that kind of gave me a feeling he was going to give his commitment to the coaches this weekend. But now he pushed his decision date back. So I'll go back to 2020, gotta hope it's Stroud or Gibbs when they make their officials.

5. Who is the QB of the future after Fields? Stroud if he signs. If not, Miller/McCord will be a great battle barring any transfer brought in. McCord starting as a true freshman would be crazy, but I could see it

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

1. 2020 Miyazaki and 2021 Troy Stellato or potentially Marcus Bradley assuming he’s a take right now

2. In the next year with either Tshabola or Gabe Powers being first

3. DL and OL for sure especially in 2021 with lots of guys to the draft after next season

4. Transfer portal used to fill areas of need with experienced proven guy ala Jonah Jackson. In some events to provide depth ala Gunnar Hoak.

5. I love Jack Miller but until he proves to be healthy all the time I’m gonna day Stroud then McCord but McCord for sure

6. No idea

HS

Spooner, good stuff. Quick question, do you think people would be interested in learning how to evaluate a player at certain positions? I am by no means a football genius but I am a former college player and current varsity assistant. Would be happy to evaluate guys based on their film in these threads. Other members, is this something you would be interested in? Our HS season ended a week ago and im bored without football.

HS
thebraxtonmillershow's picture

3. We could be possibly losing all 3 of our starting corners (if Wade decides to declare). So that would definitely be a position of need. Although I like what I've seen from Banks and Brown. A player like Darnay Holmes (if he decides to transfer) would be a nice pickup.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Toughest part of the transfer portal is making sure you don’t piss of your current commits so they don’t start looking elsewhere.

HS
keith7456's picture

Brown, Banks, and Proctor are definitely starters next year. IF Wade comes back he is the clear #1 guy and next years Okudah. Proctor looks like he has a lot of Malik Hooker in him, when he is on the field he seems to be around the ball at all times. If he could catch he would have 5-6 INTs this year in the limited time he has been out there.

Then you would expect at least one of the young kids. Phillips, Ransom, Watts, Cavazos to come in and make an early impact

Well we've had 3 DBs on the field quite a bit this season. So if Wade does leave, both Brown and Banks would still see a lot of playing time if we get a big transfer like Holmes.

HS
stxbuck's picture

1-RB and DL are the two priorities by need for next class. WR also, despite a big class in 21’. We’ll always see 4 or 5 DBs every year.

2-The transfer portal will only be used for instant starter caliber talent. tOSU being tOSU can always get stud freshmen with more eligibility. If they use the portal, it’s for starters, not depth-we don’t need it.

3-We aren’t going to see much noise for 22’ until spring/summer.

4-Scouting. Let’s see. Shaun Wade is a 1st round talent-freakish skills and has shown playmaking ability. He’s of those guys NFL GMs will make trades to move up and grab if he falls into the 2nd round.

Wyatt Davis is a stud. Pick him up in the 3rd and forget about a G position for the next 8 years. Myers, as someone noted earlier in the thread, needs to work on blitz pickups/recognition for another year. Malik Harrison could be a 2nd rounder-hits like a truck, great size, comfortable in space. I’d like to see him in Bengal stripes, along w/ Chase Young and Wyatt Davis.

HS

So you're the guy who bought Day’s story that Gunnar Hoak would be given a fair shot at the starting QB spot.

You absolutely do use the portal for depth. If you sign 90% of your recruiting class in December and then have a bunch of winter/spring defections (NFL, portal, homesickness, flunked out, kicked off the team/out of school for violations, medical redshirt), the portal is probably your only means to recapture lost depth unless you use those scholarships to sign more freshmen but then that would make your roster bottom heavy.

HS
stxbuck's picture

No, Day brought every single QB on the roster in as a transfer-that is odd. If Baldwin hadn’t fled, Hoak would probably not be here on scholly.

Jonah Jackson is better example-the entire OL-unlike the QB room-wasn’t gutted, Jackson was simply too good to pass up, a plug and play. As I said earlier, if tOSU brings in a transfer, they are bringing them in to start-like Justin Fields. We aren’t going to see LBs or WRs transferring in to be 3rd stringers by default like Gunnar Hoak.

Ive read only one member of the staff is really sold on Miyan and is pushing hard. It seems with our time crunch at this point versus what’s available/realistic we’re going to fish for the easy fish (Miyan) this year and go all in on 2021...

We need to root for Zach Evans to sign with Bama. If that happens they won’t take Gibbs. Georgia has 2-3 backs before Gibbs. So if Evans goes to bama it’ll be between us and Ga Tech and I like our chances against them.

HS
Drewbdu's picture

OTOH, if Texas loses this week and ends the season 7-5, Bijan will want a way out I assume. He is thinking about taking an OV to LSU, and has said that there is no chance he goes to USC. If Evans goes to LSU, that really limits his options to potentially 7-5 Texas or 13-0 Ohio State. Seems like we would be in a good position there.

HS

I just don't know that the kids flip or switch that much based on records.

Now, I do think coaches and job security matter to them (which ties to record). If it starts to feel like Tom's seat is getting really hot and he is one more weak season from being canned, then that maybe matters. But I don't get the sense that is the case. I think it's a Harbaugh situation where the folks in Austin will give him more time.

HS
Rgeiger24's picture

Single season records generally do not matter a ton, but I think that it is really clear that results and direction of the program really matter, which is why Texas HAS been better in recruiting over the last 2 years than the few previous to that. Look at Clemson. Why do they recruit well? Because coaches tell them look, if you want to be developed and win, come here. Once you win AFTER that pitch, kids believe you. IF you are Tom Herman promising kids that Texas is back and you are going to become a top 5 program in the country again. Once you struggle, the kids has to take everything you say with a grain of salt. Kids are only going to be more comfortable with OSU next year after seeing these on field results from a coaching staff that has 100% promised to continue the same standards and even improve upon them. Seeing that culture develop and seeing one team that promised success win and another that promised success does not win, you just HAVE to think about it. The question just becomes was that the key factor in his decision and I don't think Bijan thinks that Texas is going to be better than OSU and I don't think that would cause him to flip. Him coming to OSU would take a revelation from his family that he needs to go and succeed somewhere instead of waste his talent on a lesser team but they should have already figured that out before this season started really.

https://n.rivals.com/news/rivals-roundtable-which-wr-should-be-under-5-s...

Rivals is saying both Gee Scott Jr and Jaxon Smith-Njigba are under consideration for five star ratings. The WRs we are bringing in are going to be spectacular, but I think we all already knew that.

HS
Spartan13's picture

You undersold the story lol. Its a roundtable with all analysts about which receiver should move to 5 star. All of them(except the dick at the end who said no other receiver should be considered) said Gee Scott, JSN, or both need to be made 5 stars.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Multiple sites have been saying this for months. Until they actually do it screw ‘em.  They’re both 5* in my book and should’ve been officially months ago.

HS
HINYG8's picture

When is their next update?

High School ball should be done done everywhere in a couple of weeks. Seems logical they would roll up their ratings again in early December.

And on fourth and one... would you believe?

HS
Spartan13's picture

May not be for awhile. A couple of the guys said it would depend on what they do at the all star games not sure if there will be an update prior to those.

HS
osunick1221's picture

Jaxon is so overlooked by the talk that Gee deserves the 5th star. Gee certainly does deserve it but Jaxon would be the most coveted receiver of our class in basically any other recruiting cycle.

HS
Spartan13's picture

I hate the comparison game but Jaxon is a Terry McLaurin clone. Jaxon just needs to improve his speed a little bit, the 40 seems like a big difference but I doubt Jaxon was prepared to run it as he was a last second addition at the opening and Mclaurin was preparing for it for months.

Terry combine stats- 6-0" 208, 4.35 40, 37.5 vertical

Jaxon-6'1" 199, 4.59 40, 37 vertical

HS
216ToThe614's picture

The difference is that Jaxon can naturally catch the ball. Terry didn't develop really good hands until later in his career.

I believe that is right around the time Hartline took over. Imagine that.

The comparison is a 5th year senior at the nfl combine to a high school senior. In high school Mclaurin ran a 4.41 at the opening and was listed at 184 on ESPeNis recruiting site.

Damn it feels good to be a Buckeye

I think Jaxon has the potential to be a better KJ Hill, don't see Mclaurin in him.

HS

I know Mookie is a slot guy, but is he more speedy or quick? I was just wondering if he is the speed guy in the WR room, or if he is the make you miss guy. Or maybe both?

HS
STL Buckeye's picture

He's definitely more of a quick guy than straight line speed guy.

HS
Ludwig Yards's picture

Both, from what I've seen. But maybe he plays against a bunch of slow guys, dunno.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

He ran a verified electronic 4.4 at the Opening. I’d say he’s both.

HS
buckslan's picture

I'd say he's more quick. He's actually a lot more physical than you might think, he's a pretty good corner for his high school team. I'd say with Mookie you're getting a quick twitch, make you miss in space kind of H back. He can definitely go the distance but I don't see him being like Tyreke Hill fast.

Nice little article with Gee Scott here from 247.

"But this will be my first time playing an actual game with all of these guys and this is where the real brotherhood is," said Scott.  "I'm playing with Jaxon Smith-Njigba and he and I are probably going to be roommates in college.  We're working on CJ Stroud.  He was with us at The Opening and he'll be with us that week so we're just trying to bring him in as the icing on the cake for this class."

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

A flood of CBs for Knighton to The U. Funny thing is all their fans thought he would never come there because he was looking for a bigger program. Clemson passed on him for Bowman, he bailed on Oklahoma, he bailed on OSU, he picked a program on the decline in FSU, and now Miami may get him by default because OSU wouldn't re-engage. Rollercoaster recruitment.

It won't stop the talk. It'll just change to people asking why they took a 3 star guy because he isn't Ohio State worthy. He's too slow....blah blah blah.

I agree they if the staff wants him I feel good about him doing well here.

HS
Ohiofoosball's picture

Well, it sounds like much of the staff actually isn't sold on him. Including potentially the big guy.

But, they really are out of options unfortunately. It's obvious Gibbs and Bijan aren't coming here, so there is nobody else, and they need a body IMO...

Bn has had a ton of Miyan Williams articles so I don't recall when this was, but in one of his interviews he stated that he hadn't been in contact with Day, just Alford. So that may be why the poster above assumed Day isn't sold.

IIRC this is what was said, I read this I think from our own AE: about Williams, one particular member of the staff is all in on Williams. So I'll take it as someone read this or something like that and decided to spin it as Day and the other coaches aren't in on Williams. NOBODY said any coaches weren't in on him or didn't want him. Seems a "specific" coach is just enamored with him that's all there is to it.

Correct. I know one particular staff member is extremely high on Williams. In no way am I saying there’s a bunch of dissension among the staff, though.

THEGAME513's picture

Thank you for clarifying Andrew. I was pretty sure that was you where I read that from. As we know people love starting controversy lol. After this weekend do you still feel like we might take 2 RB's, or is Williams possibly it?

Buckeyejohn's picture

I agree the speed is mediocre and leaves a lot to be desired. He does have size though and perhaps can carve out a goal line role down the road. He just seems like a lead back we would see at Iowa or or MSU. A bigger back that can consistently get you 3-4 yards and hold up in pass pro. Fans are disappointed because he isn’t an explosive back that is going to take it to the house. This being said, this doesn’t mean you don’t take him. Robinson fell through. Gibbs looks like he isn’t interested in leaving home. Who does that leave you with? They need another body and have run out of time. Take Williams and then put all energy into hitting on an elite guy in the 2021 class.

HS
itownbuckeye's picture

I think mindset, vision and toughness are key if he has them.  Speed and explosiveness can be improved to a decent extent whereas those attributes are more innate.

HS
Buckeyejohn's picture

Right, toughness and vision can’t really be measured like speed. I’m hoping he has a lot of both. However, the Urban era also constantly reminded me that speed kills. We will see. It is encouraging that one coach is all in on Williams. I would kill to know which one.

https://n.rivals.com/news/ask-farrell-can-ryan-day-really-recruit-on-par...

“I don’t see things changing at all at Ohio State when it comes to local and nationally recruiting. I’ve known and followed Day at many places, and I can tell you he’s an elite recruiter who has many of the traits Meyer had. He learned under Meyer when he was at Florida and then again at Ohio State and he takes a similar approach. Trust me, Ohio State recruiting will continue to be elite.”

HS
Drewbdu's picture

Couple this with Birm saying he thinks Ryan Day could be a better recruiter than Meyer and I think we’re in good shape. Just look at the 2021 class. If it keeps going at this pace it’ll be the best we’ve ever had.

HS
BbBnD's picture

Is anyone that pays attention to OSU recruiting still concerned about Day as a recruiter? I feel like this was put to bed at least a couple months ago.

HS
Drewbdu's picture

Can we stop trashing Miyan Williams now?

Look at it this way:

1. He is a diamond in the rough and will be a future star RB for Ohio State. Wiltfong has already said he’s underrated.

2. He is quality depth for Teague and Crowley if an injury happens.

3. If he doesn’t pan out, the staff will be able to sell an open RB room to star RBs in future classes.

HS

4.  If he doesn't pan out, the staff will be able to sell an open RB room to star RBs in the transfer portal.

Reminder: "From the Notorious B1G podcast, Wiltfong had some nuggets on Miyan Williams: 'maybe the most violent running back on film in this class, and that was from a next level source.'"

HS
itownbuckeye's picture

I can't remember if there were questions on his speed but I remember Mike Weber's strength as a prospect was his physicality.  Weber's burst seemed to improve quite a bit from the time he came in to last year.

HS
Hodgepodge's picture

I was down on his speed when he first started getting mentioned as a legit OSU option.  He has every other trait you'd want, but he was really slow.  However, his senior film shows much better speed.  He's still a long ways from being a burner, but the speed difference from his junior film to his senior film is quite obvious.

HS
keith7456's picture

Anyone that is upset about Ohio State possibly getting 3 star Miyan Williams because the is "too slow" I just have a question. Would you be excited to sign 4 Star Corey Kiner next year. If your answer is yes then you are making yourself look stupid.

Miyan Williams is actually listed as the slightest bit FASTER than Kiner

https://247sports.com/Player/Corey-Kiner-46050095/
verified 40 time of 4.76 verified shuttle time of 4.33
https://247sports.com/Player/Miyan-Williams-46042588/

HS
bd2999's picture

I think many are salty that they are settling. It went from a five star guy in Robinson and four star in Knighton to a three star guy. After there were three or so guys that were considered along the way with a higher rank.

Part of it is the rating for many. Other parts are frustration about why OSU should need to be on fallback option two or three at this point. Particularly with success at RB this year and in past years. That is my two cents.

I do not know much on the guy but they need at least one RB this year. Then get two next year. The guy is not Robinson, but that ship sailed and through no fault of OSU.

HS
Ludwig Yards's picture

But Kiner has one more star.

HS
osunick1221's picture

Kiners listed time was from May of 2018.

*ichigan still sucks

HS
keith7456's picture

So is Williams', from the same day. Probably the same camp. Could Kiner have gotten faster since then probably, but Williams probably has too. So maybe Kiner is a 4.5 now and Miyan is a 4.6. My point is there is only small difference between the two. So the people that are saying why are we going for Williams and then pushing for Kiner hopefully have more than the Miyan is "too slow" argument.

One thing I don't know is the difference in competition they play against.

I’ve seen dozens of posts throughout these threads saying things to the effect of:

”I really hope the staff doesn’t reach for a kid that will never make an impact here.”

”If we end up with just Williams we need to take a hard look at Alford’s ability to recruit.”

”Wow, isn’t it sad that we’re stuck with backup plan number fifteen now? Hope we don’t have to settle for this kid.”

If he ends up committing this weekend, I am positive there will be at least a few comments saying “Should’ve just banked the scholarship instead of wasting it on this kid.” If he commits, it means he wants to be a Buckeye and the staff wants him to be a Buckeye. End of story.

Wonder how kids currently in the program or in the upcoming recruiting cycles visit the site before making final decisions?

I hope none.   :(

But don't worry in the end when the 3 Star develops to full potential and becomes a team leader they'll want to ride on your bandwagon and be singing your praises.

I haven’t said anything negative about the kid, but if critical comments on a fan website thread deter a kid, OSU (or any major program) might not be the right place because they will inevitably be ripped on at some point in their career, regardless of how successful they are. Example, people were shitting on JK last year and before this season started. Gotta have thick skin to do great things.
