Family Friendly Tailgating

Pretty sure you can take kids into the tailgate where Hineygate used to be.  It's on the way in if you park NE of the stadium.  Stop in, grab some tokens to get a drink or two, food for the kids if they are hungry.  Then you are 10 minutes from being in the stadium.

Meant to say if you park NW of the stadium haha.

That would be the RiverWatch tower party that is family-friendly. Just west where the Heineygate was.

Yep, this. Huge area to hang out, and a few beverage/food options. And probably some crappy band as well.

That is one game day experience that OSU could really stand to improve upon.  I went to the UW game on Saturday, and they have a very nice university-sanctioned tailgate area adjoining the stadium (you have to have a game ticket to get in.)  It's set up on an astroturf practice field, with lots food trucks, large tents set up by booster clubs, visiting team, etc.  Lots of kids running around throwing footballs, etc. And yes, beer tents.  You can even go back during halftime, (though I wish I'd known that they stopped selling beer before I trucked back down there.)  Cal had a similar setup outside their stadium, which was a lot of fun.  I'm not sure where OSU could put something like this; perhaps the parking lot next to the river?  OSU should look into this if they want to enhance the fan experience and keep putting butts in the seats.

My aim, then, is to whip the Weasels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.   - William Tecumseh Sherman (with apologies)

Ohio State cracked down on tailgating in the early 2000s and it sort of ruined the tailgate culture.

I remember for several tailgates around 2007-2008 seeing people get open container tickets in the lots. Not being belligerent, just having an OC. Now that seems to have subsided a bit, but I think it made a lasting impact on the number of people that tailgate and the quality of the tailgating.

Exactly.  Thank you, Karen Holbrook.  I too have seen folks get tickets, which has just led to the ubiquitous little red cups, allowing OSU to do a Sgt Schultz.  I'm not advocating going back to the good ol' days, when beer cans were curb deep on Lane avenue, but some happy medium.  The UW thing was very family friendly, collegiate, and lots of fun.  I can't see the harm.

Can confirm I suffered this fate after those dates, so it's still a thing apparently.

Seems kind of pricey, but it is an option: https://www.osu.edu/giving/features/pregame-huddles-2019.html

Thanks for all the responses.  I think we are locked in for a good day.  Now I just need a little sunshine & 50-degrees and it's guaranteed to be a great day.

I’ve seen a lot of kids in Buffalo Wild Wings on Lane...it’s not the greatest pregame atmosphere, but it’s kid friendly with food and drinks.
