Ohio State's star players including Chase Young, J.K. Dobbins and Chase Young stole the spotlight against Wisconsin,

Or maybe, just double.

If Day sees the veteran McCall as the safer option, Wilson's turn as the primary punt returner will likely have to wait.
McCall is many things, but I don't think he's the "safer option".
Agreed. Safe isn’t the term I’d use to describe him. I love him but, man, I get anxiety when he’s back there.

Yep. I think that "eventually" should come sooner rather than later.
I view Mcall in the same vein as I did Dontre Wilson, a nice player who never maximized their potential.
Dontre had an unspectacular career, but he did have about 1400 yards from scrimmage overall. Demario unfortunately won't get near that.
Right. His hype level is equal to (or maybe even greater than) Dontre’s, but he does not have nearly the production of Dontre.
McCall has not done anything to show he should be our punt returner.
Wilson has shown an ability to make things happen on int returns in a very limited number of attempts. He should absolutely be our full time punt returner over McCall and everyone else.
And frankly, Wilson should also be getting more run at WR.
I wouldn't mind seeing both guys back to receive punts. Unless McCall stumbles into Garretts way. Kinda my thought too Weave77.
Nice Grin and Garrett usage too Chris!

If McCall loses the punt return duties, gotta wonder where he fits on this team. McCall has zero presence on offense. I don't think he even gets in when all the backups are out there. He's probably never going to play much here.
I have wondered the same. It seems he's a little small for RB and hasn't grown into it. WR doesn't seem to be his cup of tea for whatever reason. He's a bit of a tweener and not fitting our scheme. It's sad, because you can see the skills are there.

He's kind of a version of Dontre Wilson who hasn't accepted a role as a WR/H Back and it's left him lost in the offense. He has so much speed and talent but simply hasn't been able to put it together. Was he the one who simply didn't want to move to WR? I feel like I read about this before last year but could be wrong.
I think he was against it, but gave it the ole college try last season. Moved back to mainly RB this spring for depth but with the emergence of teague...
I love McCall but as it currently stands it seems that Wilson may be the safer bet and the more likely to have a big play, despite McCall's experience and speed. Wilson has just done better so far. I do get a little nervous when Wilson is back there but not from a drop standpoint but just because he appears so light and thin that I'm worried he'll get hurt. I know we have a lot of depth at WR and it's a great room but he is a major red zone threat and I would hate to have him out with an injury. Just my take.
I was a little puzzled and worried at DMC returning punts vs the Badgers in the rain. Usually KJ Hill is brought in as the "Sure handed" and "safe" option in expected tight games. I wonder if during practice, KJ Hill was having a harder time handling the ball in wet conditions (see his drops) than Demario. He scared the crap out of me with his backward dive catch of the 2nd punt, but kudos for his ball control.
Of course, that gets us back to the problem with gloves in wet conditions. Let's hope this has been a learning experience and we will chuck the gloves next time we have an encounter with heavy rains. The most reliable receiver was J.K. Dobbins, who had no gloves on.
WHERE has Jaelen Gill been? he seems to be MIA this year, all offseason was everyone talking about this could be his year. I get Hill is in front of him, but Gill gets NO offensive ticks, even with Saunders out.
I've been wondering the same thing. Make you wonder. Part of me thinks that there just isn't a lot of room/need for him specifically in our offense right now. He is fast but is he faster than Olave or Jameson Williams? Kind of like McCall in the fact that he's not a RB and he's a good receiver but is he going to more effective than Hill, Olave etc..? I trust the coaches are putting the guys out there that give us the best chance to succeed but we will definitely know more next year because if he's not a major part of the offense next year he probably won't ever be.
Agreed! With Hill and McCall gone next year maybe that’s his time to see the field. I hope.
It does happen surprisingly.
you've got maryland and rutgers coming up, where a muff won't cost you the game (i'm with everyone else here, i actually think wilson is LESS likely to turn it over than DMC). let wilson have the reins for two games, and if all goes well, he's the guy going forward.
wouldnt mind some jameson back there either. dude is electric

I think Jameson Williams would get ample opportunity in the coming easy games except Maryland and Rutgers likely won't kick off lore than 2 or 3 times the whole game.

Putting Garrett Wilson at PR just makes so much sense for this team right now. Especially from a recruiting standpoint (and as Urban Meyer would say 'always be recruiting').
We have a lot of high-profile games coming up and for all the young eyeballs to see and hear the announcer say, "Garrett Wilson back deep to return for Ohio State, true freshman WR from Austin, TX".
They be like, OK youngblood, I see you.
We are about to embark on an epic run through Penn St, TTUN, B1G CG, Playoff semis, NCG...culminating in a Trophy hoisting ceremony!
Best optics possible.
By our third game coming up teams will kick away from Garrett.
Because he will light it up by our second game!!!! This kid is special.
I had wondered why he wasn't our return guy since the first punt he received. This kid is a sick talent and I love McCall but he is not close to the same talent level as Garrett.
Make the switch now coach Day. He is going to bust one and will have multiple TD's as a return man if he gets the starting nod.
That's how winners play. We convince the other guy he's making all the right moves.
Garrett Wilson gets upfield so quickly returning punts. If he doesn't fair catch it, it's almost a guarantee he's going to get you 10+ yards. Way too many returners run sideways or even backwards the moment they catch the ball and they take away the advantage of the returner and increase the odds of a block in the back.
It's just a matter of time before Wilson takes one to the house. He's just that good with the ball.

I like Demario McCall, I really do, but, the thought of him being the safer option is laughable. I'm gonna support Days decision either way but I've been waiting on DJ's GOAT forever now. I'm almost sad for Demario but if I'm being completely honest, , and I am, it's Wilson's time.
I like Wilson, but perhaps they are keeping McCall engaged so he doesn’t leave to keep depth if they don’t land a 2020 RB? Don’t hate me, first post:)
Welcome to poster status. I see you’ve been around for many years now just never posted. Up vote for you.
It does appear the staff is keeping him engaged with the PRs but I don’t know how much he adds to RB depth when we have Teague, Crowley, and Chambers all coming back and all looking better than McCall. I’d actually like to see him graduate then transfer to a place he could actually see the field and make an impact.
Thanks for the welcome (and the upvote:))
Seems pretty clear that GW's ceiling is higher than DMC at least in punt return. Not certain about Wilson's risk factor vs McCall, but until he starts putting balls on the ground, I'd ride the breakout ability of Wilson. Agree with others who note that the next two games are a great opportunity to kick the tires and see how it goes... they could rotate PR duties to be fair to both. Wilson has the 'it' factor with the ball in his hands.
But what if Maryland and Rutgers don't have to punt? Hahahahahahahahaha.........
Gotta love it.
I had the nervous clench every time McCall was getting ready to field the punt in the pouring rain, and in a close game nonetheless. Flashbacks of giving TTUN a short field last year came to me. Thank GOD none were dropped or consequential.
