Used to think Tom Allen was a big phony... like PJ Fleck. Now? Not so sure. Are they actually good football coaches?

HS
BTBuckeye's picture

Incoming hot take, I think Indiana has been a pretty decent program since Kevin Wilson was there. They aren't an easy out. You gotta show up.

HS
stpetebuck's picture

Agreed BTB.  Decent offensive stats suddenly became expected after Wilson.

HS
PhillyNut's picture

Sadly if we had any hope that a Buckeye coach might get Big Ten COY I think that hope is squashed again this year even if the Buckeyes are undefeated at the time of the vote.  Expectations are always high for the Buckeyes so delivering an undefeated team is the base expectation.  For Minnesota and Indiana both are delivering way past normal expectations so Day might finish fourth in the vote (no way Ferentz finishes any lower than third).

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

Here are some coaches on the Dodd Trophy mid season watch list:

Saban, Dabo, Orgeron, Ferentz, Franklin, Fleck, HARBAUGH.  Sadly, no coach Day.  This award has lost all credibility with me.

HS
Sterve's picture

Oops, just read that a coach in his first year is not eligible.  The list still has no credibility due to Harbaugh being on it.

HS

Now one of those two are a lock for B1G COY.

I enjoy your posts Ramzy, but I scroll past the sax solo portion every week.

Within about a 15-minute span at the Dubgate I had one attendee tell me the same thing as you, another tell me they scroll straight to the sax solo section - and Navy give me sax solo requests.

John Cooper's lucky pig's picture

Kudos to you for choosing such an exquisite criteria like "Slap" to judge the worthiness of a saxophone solo. A saxophone solo, like a bourbon, is a complex collision of notes and only Slap can adequately describe whether it is up to snuff for the sophisticated listener.

HS

Folks not into the sax solos have GOT to be in the minority. I mean, come on - who doesn't love sax?!?

I skip over it too. According to a class I took at the University of Toledo...26 years ago, most people don't complain at a retail establishment. They just don't go back. So if you get a complaint, they said be thankful.

And I don't think his comment is a complaint. If it was a problem, he would not read the weekly column. The same with me. I use my laptop  and scrolls the side to get to the bourbon to see what you put up. Then after a glance, I go read the article.

Feel free to drop a youtube link to a flugelhorn player sometime. The kids might like it.

Uhm no.  They won't beat either.  But they'll handle NW and Purdue.

HS
buckzilla1's picture

I wouldn't be surprised to see them get either one. I think they are equal to PSU and better then Michigan. Unlike PSU, they won't get out of the gas when they get up on Michigan. Unlike Michigan, Indiana has a pulse on offense that can rest a defense. I really think they will get one of these two teams and wouldn't be shocked if they got them both.

Their performance against ND looked like a different team than their prior home games as well. I’m not sure we can use historical performances to accurately judge at this point. Who knows, they might look like absolute dog shit again next time they play.

The Rage Virus from the movie 28 Days Later described me and most OSU fans last season, especially when the defense imploded. They fact it didnt completely implode vs. TTUN, Northwestern, and Washington last year was an Urban Miracle. Of course Urban was largely responsible for everything imploding last season so was it a miracle we survived our 3 most important games or did Urbz just get lucky like the survivors in that movie?

My take on Walking Dead, fwiw...pretty addicting for about 4 or 5 seasons, then you realize the creators are just fucking with you with recycled plots over and over and over again, and that they have no plan in sight to move the damn thing along.  The characters get so good at killing zombies that it's like watching Jedi taking on battle droids...pointless.

Let's hope watching the Buckeyes obliterate their zombie opponents never gets boring.

HS

I don't get the light saber. How can the Jedi be so fast at blocking laser bullets? And how can the bad guys shooting those be such bad shots? Actually why block the bad shots all together? I haven't really watched a Star Wars after the first one.

Anyway, another fine Situational Ramzy.

let's say something else nice about indiana:

HS

great design.  Is it me, or do Adidas jerseys just not "show" well.  These stripes are on sleeves that show more armpit hair then stripe.  They may be lighter than Nike, but they fail to cover the pads or look good on TV.  For what its worth.

it's that Day is making every bit of use out of the infrastructure he inherited....and he's applied his own lens to winning games and influencing giant adolescents.

Here comes November; may the beatings continue.

also, color me guilty as a Phil fan. What’s his name leaves Genesis but kudos to Phil for stepping up and taking over the mic. That’s gotta be worth something.

HS
PhillyNut's picture

What's his name is Peter Gabriel.  And pretty amazing that they did not know what they had in Phil until Peter left.  Unlike another drummer who had thoughts about a solo career (yes, Ringo, looking at you) Phil has the chops for both.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

HS

And Phil was really apprehensive about leaving the drums and the background to become the lead singer. He had to be convinced to step up and give it a try.

HS
cledaybuck's picture

Did Ringo really have thoughts about a solo career or did he just not have a choice after the Beatles broke up?

HS
BuckZealot's picture

Ringo briefly left the band after, in essence, being marginalized by PM.  PM apologized and allegedly covered his drum kit with roses to make up.....probably debunked but you get the idea.  I don't believe there ever were delusions of grandeur on Ringo's part.....By the way, he's put together a pretty solid solo career and is still touring.  Saw him in Melbourne Florida not long ago playing with Todd Rundgren and other "all Starr's"

Indiana would be a perennial contender in the West. If you have to play PSU/MSU/Um and The Ohio State University every year, that's not really a recipe for success

Glad you said what I've been saying. November is where Buckeye legends are made. Tressel and Urban excelled at it. Cooper, that was the only thing he was lacking. Reverse his bowl and UM record, 11-1-1 and 8-3 in bowl games, he would have at least 2 National Championships (1993,95,96,97,98 were all flawed with November and bowl games).  What we've seen of Ryan Day is really really good, but judgement month has not yet been passed.

I wished that I liked Bourbon more.  The way that you write up the experiences for each of these Situational Bourbons leaves me feeling that I am missing out on something quite lovely.

But, much like reading about fine wine tasting and also watching videos of people gorging themselves on heaps of food, my pleasure is chiefly derived in knowing that you are having a good time.

Only time I saw Phil and Genesis was in their early days.  Was visiting my sister at Case Western and they were playing I think at Emerson Gym.  1973. They were not even the main band.  They came on second among three bands total. Phil was only on drums, Gabriel was on lead vocals.

This season has been like none I can remember, and that goes back a little ways. Not gonna lie, I was a little anxious about Nebraska and Sparty, less so about Northwestern although I didn't expect the Buckeyes to be quite that dominant. But after watching them live in Evanston, and having watched NU nearly beat Wisconsin, there was no doubt in my mind the Buckeyes were going to roll Bucky like a cigarette in a Clint Eastwood spaghetti western, and smoke them in one drag.

Damn fine choice on the sax solo this week. 'One More Night' is right up there with anything by Norah Jones - put that music on and somebody's gettin' laid.

Do you take requests?

Let's hope Ryan keeps the recruits like Urban did. This team is loaded thanks to Urban. As far as X's & O's go Day is great but recruiting is the life blood and he needs to stay after it. He is off to a great start for 2020.

HS

I was particularly pleased to hear him talk about the importance of recruiting Ohio. Of course you want the top talent regardless, but it’s always warmed my otherwise cold, cold heart to see a roster full of in-state guys ruining other schools’ Saturdays.

I hadn't realized that Scott Frost was complaining about playing the better half of the BIG East - what's crazy is just not too long ago Nebraska fans were complaining about the division alignment because they DON'T get to play teams like Ohio State enough! I know the fans sometimes want different things than the coaches, but I wonder how the fans feel today?

Try BEING in the be B1G East! I really don't care that every year the Buckeyes have to play 3/4 of the best opponents in the B1G Conference just to make it to the B1G Championship where they get to play that 4th, especially in a season like this one where the Buckeyes have to try to beat what has been the 2nd best B1G team for the last 3 years THE WEEK BEFORE THEY PLAY THE THIRD BEST B1G TEAM WHO JUST HAPPENS TO BE THEIR HEATED RIVAL, but it's happening
