This decade, Peppers finished 5th in 2016, Te’o 2nd in 2012 and Mathieu 5th in 2011.
Gerbill - 170 YD, 3 TD, 3 SK, 1 PR TD and 1 INT
Manti - 7 INT, 113 TK and 1.5 SK
Tyrann - 2 TD, 6 FF, 5 FR and 2 INT
It looks like how good they actually are has nothing to do w/ it. All three just have a bunch of fluky stats, and played on a high-profile team. I would strongly argue that the Honey Badger was the only dude who was deserving of the votes.
Do not include Te'o in that list. He only got votes because of sympathy of the fake death of his fake girlfriend.
If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special.
But Manti had that girlfriend
Edit: damn too late
I thought she was still alive during the season? It’s weird to type that bc “she” never existed in the first place. LOL
She supposedly died in September, IIRC. Summer romance, had leukemia or something, wasn’t really an issue until late Sept / early October.
Alvin Mack was definitely a better Heisman candidate than Joe Kane. But ECU made no effort to promote him to voters. And then he got injured.
If Mack - or even Lattimer - had taken the award back in the mid-90s, it could have changed the trajectory of the award. Alas, injuries and steroids got in the way.
Wyatt Davis approves this comment.
The answer may not be at the bottom of a bottle, but it never hurts to check.
Dude.....ANY reference to the greatest college football movie ever about an alcoholic gets an upvote from me.
Also, why was Kane even in the discussion, they never went into his stats, win-loss record, or anything else. All we knew is that "Kane is Able!"
I bleed scarlet...literally
I definitely agree about the Honey Badger.
It looks like how good they actually are has nothing to do w/ it.
To support this observation, Joey Bosa didn't finish in the top-10 in 2014 despite these stats prior to the Heisman ceremony (i.e., before the CFP):
4 Forced Fumbles
1 Fumble Recovery
I'd also say this shows that Young will have to put up some unbelievable numbers if these stats through 13 games didn't earn Bosa a spot in the top-10.
Three strip sacks returned for touchdowns would be a good start.
“Ain’t life grand when you finally hit it!” DLR
Grab some offensive snaps, score touchdowns.
Hindsight is, and in, 2020
Unfortunately, this. Chase is phenomenal, and not only has the stats to back up his play impressively, but he’s actually opening up opportunities for those around him to be better playmakers. I actually expect his numbers to level off as teams learn to scheme for him, but that will just open the door for Mattison to adjust off that and turn the back 7 loose to take advantage of what the offenses leave exposed.
I agree. That's why I have a hard time seeing him break the record. Teams are not going to let him beat them but that will leave others unblocked...perfect example was the browning sack on Saturday. Young and Browning were beside each other and they double teamed Young no one blocked Browning.
Harrison was coming from the other side every bit as fast. The difference was the back blocked the left edge instead of the right. We had a two on one either way, a typical Mattison move to overwhelm the blocking scheme, and his D just blows shit up. With the talent on this D, I don’t even think we’ve scratched the surface of what Mattison can unleash on opposing offenses.
Put him at punt returner.
There aren’t enough hours in the day and Jugs machines in the WHAC for that to ever happen.

Yeah. He can’t even catch gimme interceptions (which could have been a pick 6).
Don't like that idea, as his motor is already at 100%.
Remember when Suh was talked about as a prospective winner? I think that Chase is having an even greater effect than he did and that was an unbelievable season. He definitely needs some defensive scores, or create scoring opportunities for others in a big game to make a case.
Strip sacks returned for TD, and/or a pick 6 or two.
Lining up at Tight End in goal line situations and catching a few TDs
Punt return for TD
AKA the Horseshoe, the Shoe, and the House That Harley Built
It’s kind of dumb that he has to score a meaningless offensive TD to be acknowledged by voters. 15 sacks and complete domination, won’t even warrant a bat of the eyes.
15 solos sacks, 10 strips, 3-4 recovery returns for TD...and play QB while throwing for 25 TDs and running for 10.
Heisman really need to be renamed the QB with the "best" stats award(unless an Alabama RB is close)
Since 2000 the award has been 16 QBs, 2 Alabama RBs and Reggie Bush(Vacated)
The 2 RB stole the award from the two best backs in the nation that year...both from Stanford
Get a fake girlfriend. And cause/return fumbles.
She has to die too

Get E$PN on board as the push behind the first defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy. That ought to do it am i right?
You never lose to those pricks. Ever. Ever. Urban Frank Meyer
Switch to QB and come back next year
Take Justin Fields' spot and throw for 45+ TD's with another 5-10 on the ground and a 65%+ completion ratio with an undefeated team.
The award is sadly a joke now.
Keep sacking guys and then score a defensive TD against TTUN and strike the pose right in front of their own fans. Seriously, this would be amazing / hilarious.
F The Heisman.
Win the Natty, & then be the first guy to stand on stage with Goodell in April. Either of those throws rocks at the Heisman.
A failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
At least the Heisman has a stiff arm extended to block the rocks. Without a facemask, he needs some type of protection.
20+ sacks to even get invited to New York
Don't listen to Freddy P. Soft
Kinda hurts we don't have Iowa on the schedule.
He would need to play offense, and be amazing. It’s not happening. Unfortunately, the selection criteria has evolved in the minds of voters to exclude defense altogether.
Which is why I think there should be two Heismans every year--one for offense and one for defense.
"porque las estirpes condenadas a cien años de soledad no tenían una segunda oportunidad sobre la tierra."
Become a quarterback.
If he can make Tom Rinaldi talk about him in a way that everybody cries, he’s got a chance.
So, for example if Chase manages to turn an unfortunate incident featuring his pet parakeet and a tractor into life-altering charitable cause for orphaned children born with a bad case of Helicopter Toenail, he could get some votes.
Would help if he returns a missed field goal for a touchdown on a play in which he’s simultaneously somehow also the kicker.
Put him in the room in New York. I dare anyone else to go up to the podium.

Dennis Dodd agrees.
Yep, the ole Tebow strategy.
Klatt with 3 Buckeyes in his top 10? This is the same “the ESPN loves the SEC” scenario we bitch about
Joel, is that you? Welcome to 11W!
What's most frustrating about the de-evolution of the Heisman is that the year that Woodson won it, not only was he deserving, but he beat out both Peyton Manning and Randy Moss, who would go onto have insane professional careers along with Woodson. You would have thought that the voters would have taken that as a sign that they got it right. Instead, it's a complete aberration in college sports history.
Has to have 'Heisman' plays, like lead the nation in sacks, have a game winning tackle, multiple scores/blocks.
If Orlando Pace didnt win the Heisman, no player who doesnt put up huge offensive stats will ever win.
He needs to go back in time and catch that pick 6 he dropped earlier in the year. Also we can remove the names from the back of the jerseys and hope he gets credit for what Dobbins is doing on offense.
Just keep playing hard. Have fun doing it, because college will be over very soon, then it becomes a job. And do everything he can to help his team win the CFP. If he does all that, and still doesn’t win the Heisman, he’ll never think about it again.
Chase has another problem other than position. There are three Buckeyes on Klatt's list. Multiple players from one team tend to dilute the vote since some voters will only vote for one player per team, not fair but that is reality.
Let's Go Bucks
SACKS SACKS SACKS SACKS. Believe the most ever is 20 so it would have to be North of that.. You get in the 25 range and that's a BIG deal..
"What chance is there for him to be a Finalist in NYC?"
Really slim. Most defensive players who get that far have a hook other than their play on defense. With Peppers, it was that he contributed on offense and special teams also. We all remember what the hook was for Manti Te'o.
I think his one chance is if one of the designated quarterback candidates either gets hurt soon or presides over losses that removes his team from the national title picture. Aside from that, I expect every Heisman finalist to be a QB from a Top Ten team. I guess Taylor could make it also if he runs wild against the Buckeyes, but I don't foresee that happening.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
Peppers being there was a joke. I'll never forget some of the idiot fanbase saying he'll be just as good or better than Woodson. I was actually happy to see him go, I got so tired of the direct snap to him for 2 yards. Total waste of downs. He never did anything at all against top competition
Score at least a couple defensive TDs, have 15+ sacks, win the NC(or at least make the playoff prior to voting), and hope that Fields and Dobbins somehow cool off compared to him while still leading the team to an undefeated season. Oh, and hope Hurts and Tagavailoa fall on their faces somehow........
What does Chase have to do to win the Heisman?
Go to a memorabilia auction and be the high bidder for O.J.'s or Reggie's, If he is the high bidder he will one, maybe two.
Since two teammates are on the list, and play offense while he plays defense, his votes will be too diluted.
The Heisman is really not available for him, and neither is the Ray Guy Award, Freddy Biletnikoff Award, Lou Groza Award, Dick Butkus Award, or the John Mackey Award either, but there are many others he can collect.
As for the 2019 Heisman, his only chance is... Hop in the Transfer Portal, pop out in Abalama, get some airtime on the SEC Network, and get 8 sacks against the little sisters of the poor on chicken sh!t Saturday.
Otherwise he will have to be content as a top 3 NFL Draft Pick, and spend the next twelve years crushing all the Heisman Finalists of 2019.
Switch to an offensive skill position.
Ndamukong Suh finished 4th in 2008 and deservingly so. Finished ahead of Tebow in his senior season. Suh was unbelievable that year:
4. Ndamukong Suh* Nebraska SR DL 52 Solo, 33 Ast, 12.0 Sk, 1 Int
I think Chase could realistically get invited to New York if he can continue what he has been doing and make game altering plays during our premier games.
"Life's a garden, dig it." -Joe Dirt
If there was ever a defensive player that deserved the Heisman, it would’ve been Suh that year. But when you look at what he did in his CCG and knowing he only took 4th that year, you know there’s no way anyone on defense is winning this award again.
I think he needs to a have 24+ sacks and at least 7 FF with recovering 1-2 for a TD.
Sack shea Patterson 8 times in beating ttun 69-0 Intercept a pass for a pick six and then run a fumble back for 6 more after he sacked Patterson on the 8th sack. His offensive skill set would be showcased.
He would at least get my vote :)
Enjoying daily the back to back ttun beatdowns.
10 sacks a game from here through the end of the year?

WHAT DOES CHASE HAVE TO DO TO WIN THE HEISMAN?
Kill/maim/frame-up the rest of the top ten and get away with it. **
** Does not constitute an endorsement of this idea...
But, will Chase throw? If so, thats the only way he wins QB of the year the Heisman.
This is a really tough year to even get an invite. You have Tua, Hurts, Taylor, probably Fields. For Chase to through I think he'd have to put up crazy stats.
20+ sacks, 5FF, INT, highlight TD, 1-2 more blocked FG.
Young is amazing, but with teams doubling him, it'll be hard to hit those numbers. He'll have to have multiple huge games like he did against Miami.
The Heisman is a joke now. Best player in college football is easily Chase Young it's not even up for debate.
Rather simple really:
Just has to strip sack the QB. While both are going to the ground, Chase must pirouette on his finger tips ... catch the falling ball with his feet. He'll then instantly size up the action around him, while upside down & notice Okudah has already begun running deep (knowing, of course, that Chase was going to do this). In prototypical leg ark throwing form, Chase Young lobs a 20 yard pass, with his legs to a wide open Okudah who runs unopposed for the pick 6.
Or he could switch to the offensive side of the ball.
History says he'd be better off switching positions to QB, then have really gaudy stats on a really good team. Then have OSU make a very expensive and creative campaign which also includes a lot of bots saying nice things on social media.
Success - it's what you do with what you've got. - Woody Hayes
If not for advertisement that award is a joke. There are awards for each position even punters and winning the Heisman will not enhance or hurt his draft status. Teams draft the best player for position of need and qb's are not doing well in the NFL and rb's like in high school recruiting are a dime a dozen. Why pay huge bucks for a rb when you can get one in round 3 for 75% off.
Holy Joe Burrow at #2!!!
That pick he dropped might have been a huge stat for him. I just don't know how he can quantitatively make a run for it.
Play QB or RB probably. Any talk about any defensive player winning the Heisman is just window dressing. It won't go to anyone not named Tua, Justin, or Jalen.
Proudly dispensing unbridled arrogance since 1983.
he has to break the single season sack record of 24. And he has to dominate against Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan.
"Mongo only sausage in bowl of soup"
Start wearing funny socks or something like that. Heisman has more to do with hype then anything anymore.
I would think he'd for sure have to set the NCAA sacks in a season record. Probably is going to need to score multiple defensive TDs, wouldn't hurt him to lineup at tight end and score a few TDs on that side either.
It's just REALLY tough to get there as a defensive player.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
