I don't get into National shows at all so my list is pretty narrow in focus:

The 11W World Conglomerate Consortium

- Dubcast

-Real Pod Wednesdays

- 11W Sunday radio, played in the late afternoon/early evening

- Newly formed Browns show with Ramzy & DJ (I know it isn't official but still view it under the umbrella)

Buckeye Talk

I've started catching Tim May's podcast weekly as well.

Have listened to Spielman & Hooley's podcast for around 6 weeks now. I know Hooley is generally despised but Spielman respects him & he has never really pissed me off like others.

To Trock, had no idea Marty even had one out... As in Marty Smith's America?

HS
trock's picture

Yeah. His podcast is "Marty Smith's America The Podcast". We sometimes have guest on and other times we just talk about college football or whatever we did over the weekend and random stuff.

HS

Got a couple episodes in already. Had no idea it was out there, much less in the 70's on episode count.

Appreciate the info!

HS

No problem. Would love to hear your feedback also

Trock, congratulations on the Marty Smith podcast.  I like how he goes in-depth with his guests...or can go completely off topic and just talk.  I'm from Virginia also, so we sorta talk the same way.  His book is great also.

Thanks. We've gone away from the guests being on every week to more story telling. But we will still have one some big names from time to time.

Love the podcast and I’m a fan of Marty since his NASCAR days. He comes off as a real dude, so I’d love to hear what you think from someone who knows him.

One of my favorites is Beanie and Boom. I find they keep my attention and are very entertaining. Always have good guests too.

HS

I just listen when they have a guest. Best is when they have a guest on and they tell stories about their time at OSU and reflect on past games, etc. Not really interested in their breakdown of the game, but cool when I can get nostalgia about guys talking about their time at OSU.

The Shutdown Fullcast is one of the best CFB podcasts. It's about 10 minutes game recap/preview and 1 hour worth of back and forth between Spencer Hall, Ryan Nanni, Holly Anderson and Jason Kirk.

They have some good gimmicks every year too. They'll do some live shows you can attend; think they did one at the Ann Arbor Public Library over the summer. And last year during the halftime of a game they had a "podcast" via dial in conference call.

Check out Beanie and Boom. It’s obviously our past RBs Beanie Wells and Boom. Also, they bring on a lot of past players. And  I’ve said this before but listen to Menace 2 Society. Like him or not he is entertaining.

You guys got the good ones.

Just waiting for Bill Connelly to get a new one.

New Day for OSU. Same noon for TTUN.

Wetzel Forde Thamel is by far the worst of them.

Opinions, I guess.  I dislike Forde, but these guys entertain me in this pod format.

Do you enjoy Focus 3? I haven't listened to it, wondering if I should.

HS
osu992's picture

Not bad. In the bottom half of the group. I'd do things like making sure my children are fed before adding it to the rotation. It's more generic of the national scene than The Audible or PAPN and there is a lot of overlap on national commentary when you only have an hour to talk about 130 teams. The main differentiator is their association with 24/7, bringing in memories of evaluation players as recruits. ...they also don't have Stewart Mandel, which is nice.

New Day for OSU. Same noon for TTUN.

If you like pro wrestling, Grilling JR is great.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

I like most of the ones OP mentioned, and I'd add Cover 3 with Barton Simmons, Chip Patterson, and Tom Fornelli.

They do CFB picks against the spread on their Thursday show that have helped me quite a bit.

Also, Yahoo Sports College Pod is pretty funny, too.  I'm not a big Pat Forde fan, but the three guys (Dan Wetzel and Pete Thamel) are truly funny at times.  They had me rolling talking about the Snoop Dogg Kansas fiasco last week.

  • Tony Kornheiser Show (just a funny show)
  • Pardon My Take (they're not as ridiculous as most of Barstool products and have great guests consistently)
  • Lights Camera Barstool (Pop culture - covers movies and television and a lot of fast food - again not too on brand for Barstool stuff)
  • Binge Mode (Ringer pod - Harry Potter and GOT specifically were covered in depth and it was so great)
  • The Rewatchables (Ringer pod - covers great rewatchable videos from like the last 20-30 years - not a fan of Simmons though)
  • Around the Horn and PTI recordings - I listen to catch up on national stories if I find anything interesting at the time
  • Brian Windhorst and the Hoop Collective (I am an NBA junkie and get a lot if good info here)

"To Buckeye Nation: You have my word that I'm going to give everything I have to continue the tradition of excellence and winning that this program has enjoyed during its storied history."

HS
aphilly02's picture

Also:

  • Lowe Post (NBA junkie that really goes into analysis and covers a wide range of topics)
  • Marvel Studios News (I am an MCU nerd!)
  • Woj Pod (Woj also brings on good guests for interviews for the NBA, it's very infrequent. He just had Beilein on, the new Cavs coach and former TTUN coach)

All else being equal, he is my order of podcasts

1. Outkick the Coverage w/ Clay Travis
2. The Tim May Podcast
3. The Audible w/ Stew & Bruce
4. Menace 2 Society Podcast
5. Cleveland Browns Daily (Incredible chemistry between Nathan Zegua and Beau Bishop)
6 The Eleven Ducast
7. A few different True Crime podcasts.

Putting Clay Travis at #1 and Zach Smith in front of the Dubcast invalidates this list for me.  Just bein' real.

What are some great strictly college football based podcasts that people like? Not necessarily CFB culture or people that talk about CFB along with a number of other things, but strictly CFB matchup related stuff (i.e. discussing this weekend's games, and so on)? Finebaum is hard for me to listen to being that it's, understandably, 98% SEC related.

I mostly listen to comedy podcasts, so I'm a bit out of the loop.

HS

The best that I've came across for what you are looking for are Menace 2 Society w/ Zach Smith and The Audible with Stew & Bruce.

Buckeye Weekly with  Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr is one of my favorites.

Joe Rogan Experience, Menace 2 Society, Bucknuts morning 5, Tim May, 4 to 6 with A and B, Beanie & Boom, Dan Carlins Hardcore History

HS

I don't think it's been mentioned, but in the "non-sports" category, I really like Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History.  It is worth a listen if you are looking for something different than sports.

And honestly, when a new episode of that shows up, I listen to it before I listen to any other podcast I subscribe to.

For the fantasy football players in the room, the ESPN Fantasy Focus podcast is awesome. Those guys are right a lot more than they're not.

There's a few Browns pods out there but they are all generic, must run the ball, stop the penalties, stop the run, blah blah blah

Generally agree. We decided to make the Factory of Sadcast more of a Three Guys in a Bar thing than more of that.

listened to the one after the SF debacle.  Good shit.  Reg. listener now.

A great non sports podcast, although some of the guests are from the sports realm, is The Learning Leader Podcast from Ryan Hawk (AJ Hawk's brother).

Menace 2 the Midwest and Menace 2 Society. The co-hosts (brothers maybe?) have came a long way since the beginning. Rarely, if ever, talks about personal stuff anymore. Now it is all football, and it is all good. LOVE the emphasis on PFF grades. The Philly Brown interview was fantastic. And I love that he still wants OSU to win it all.

Turns some people off with his cursing, although he never has gone to the "f word". Generally just drops a "shit" here and there.

Elliott dots the eye, on this national championship win.

HS
MichiBuck12's picture

Totally agree on Zach Smiths podcasts. He did the personal stuff at the beginning and even that was not quite as "scorched earth" as I expected it to be. But now that he's settled in he does a fantastic job of talking college football.

I mainly listen to non CFB podcasts. My top ones are Small Town Murder (you’ll either love it or hate it) and The Pat McAfee Show 2.0 (also stream his radio show) I also listen to the powerlifting/fitness/nutrition podcasts Sigma Nutrition, Barbell Medicine Podcast, Peak Speak and The JuggLife. Between 11W, The Athletic, pregame shows on Saturday and 97.1 I get all the sports talk I need.

I'm such a late adopter so I'm new to the podcast thing.  I'm definitely going to check out some of these that others of you have recommended.  I listen to the Eleven Dubcast and Zach Smith's podcast, as well as the College Football Nerds and Joel Klatt's Breaking the Huddle.  But my favorites are the Joe Rogan Experience and Steven Rinella's MeatEater.  I absolutely love MeatEater, but I'm a hunter and angler, but it's just not about that.  If you like cooking (it's all field to fork, but one could apply the knowledge to industrial grocery store food, as well I guess), but if you are into wildlife biology, ecology, habitat preservation, conservation, etc., it's a good listen.. I think Rogan was one of the first podcasters.
