Do you think that the team will use the week off to look ahead at Wisconsin, or will they focus on healing up, and preparing for NW next week?

Coaches will look at Wisconsin for sure. And they will probably mix it in without telling the players. But full players focus will be on health, mistakes and Northwestern.

What are some things that other teams can take from this game's film and game plan with in the future to stop the Buckeye's offensively/defensively? There were a couple plays Lewerke missed on and could have made the game closer.

We made mistakes too. Missed some reads, didn't capitalize on the short field, coverage busts on defense... Teams will have to play virtually mistake free to keep up with OSU, in a game where Ohio State makes mistakes.

Did you see the beginning of the game as a "slow start?" Or more of the Buckeyes testing Michigan State's D to see where they could exploit it?

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

Both. Not capitalizing on a short field twice hurts, but MSU is a real good defense. Things don't come easy and putting the gameplan into action takes a little more time. Offenses run plays to set up other plays. So if the run only nets you 8 yard on 5 plays but the play action pass gets you 62 yards in the next quarter, then that success. If you run left handed out of the same formation 2 times for 4 yards, but you run counter right out of the same formation  away from a run blitz and it hits for 40, that's a win

PSU looks strong. Their defense is very good and Sean Clifford can extend plays on offense. KJ Hamler is a special player as well.

Is that just Fields or is that a function of the other players around him? I think that it should depend on the game and the opponent how the offense starts. Some teams, you get them running. Some you run right at them. Some you stretch the field just to loosen them up. The gameplan is truly a plan.

NW is only game on grass this year.

1.  Did you ever play at Ryan Field?  Thoughts?  Some schools change length of grass for different opponents? True?  (Piggybacking on BUCKFutter question)   TTUN did it to FSU in ‘90 and still lost by 30 points)

2.  Grass or turf?  Does it matter? To whom?

Please add anything you feel adds insight to the subject that most do not know as fans.  I prefer grass, but I never played on turf.

I played there in 2013 and it was like a HS stadium. I prefer grass. It's easier on your legs for sure. OSU practices on grass as late into the season as they can safely. It's a better surface TBH. But that's just me

I don't know who has played and how much off the top of my head, but the smart thing to do, even if you want to transfer is burn this year, potentially win a Nati and move on from there. Hold out and see if you can't be a part if something special.

The only reason I thought we had a slow offensive start was not letting Fields keep it early; when OSU went to the Fields run game in the second quarter things took off.  Is that a product of the offensive coaching staff saving him until they need it, or just a product of having 15 scripted plays to start the game on offense and they had to get through those first?

Well I think two things happened there. I think they wanted to establish a physical, downhill running attack to set them up for play action but also the QB keeping the ball. But I also think you don't want your young QB getting hit too early and too hard. They hit the QB run game when MSU started getting tired on defense and that's smart.

No. There is still a lot of time to improve and you can do some things in protection to help (slide protection, TE/RB chip).

Bachie had 2 sacks I think, so he was in the mix. He got tired as the game went on and he faded for sure. In think the DL for MSU was in the same boat overall. You can see on some of the longer drives where those guys were walking off the bad and running lazy stunts. Sideline shots showed them on the sideline sucking air too, and that was a big factor.

Josh - Is it crazy to think that we haven't seen the full potential of this offense? In every game thus far (specifically the 2nd quarter) we've seen some really creative and explosive plays on offense, then revert back to the "ground and pound" style that just wears on teams the rest of the game.

It feels like if the coaching staff wanted to score 60 every week, that would be in the cards, but Day has the quiet confidence to vanilla the play calling and just let the talent win the rest of the game.

Before the season, I saw this upcoming Northwestern game (not Nebraska) as the potential Iowa/Purdue road trap game of the year, but not by huge margins like the previous two years. Now that we're basically halfway through the season and having watched all of our games as well as bits and pieces of theirs, I feel MUCH more confident about the Buckeyes leaving Evanston with the W. That said, NW appears to be solid again on defense and Coach Fitz will surely get his guys to play extremely hard. Playing on a Friday night could also be tricky, especially with a HUGE game with Wisconsin looming the following week. Obviously the Buckeyes are the far better team, but what do you think the chances are of a let-down game next Friday night?

Have you seen Northwestern on tape? They literally cannot play offense and don't have one playmaker on that side of the ball. They are good on defense, but not better than MSU. With a bye, I can't see one situation where the Buckeyes struggle.

Justin Fields is casual in the pocket. He threw a pick and put the ball on the ground this week. I want to see more of a clock in his head. And it's not flagrant, but something to keep an eye on. I think defensively, the QB run can be an issue. I don't think a lot of teams want their QB to get hit by this defense, but I could see that.

I don't feel great about Haubeil. The kicker at OSU should not be missing 30-39 yard field goals hardly ever and he's missed two of them already this year.

Inside the 25 (42 yard kick) with this LS and holder should be automatic.   It’s all mental.  “Keep your head down”.  Place before pace.

I like Buh-LAH-kee.   He will be better down the stretch.

HS
FocusedBuckeye215's picture

Do you think MSU exposed some weaknesses on both sides of the ball especially the defense? Or were those mental miscues? Also it looked like the defense was trying to strip the ball more often in this game, you could see it in some of the replays, was this due to the earlier MSU fumbles?

Some adjustments for sure, but I want you to watch the tape and see how tired the front 7 for MSU was by halftime. Guys weren't pass rushing hard and the LBs weren't running to the ball. Those guys were worn out.

Hi Josh, thanks for taking the time to do this every week—your insight is really fascinating and appreciated.

Q: I'm always impressed with our players when they give interviews. They always give humble, respectful answers and they seem to be saying all the right things. How much of this do you attribute to the coaching staff providing motivation and talking points, versus the players being this way themselves? I know we tend recruit high-character individuals, but just wondering how much these interview responses are influenced by the coaching staff on a week to week basis. What type of coaching does the team receive in regards to answering media questions? Are there usually topics you're told to avoid answering directly, and do they provide you with tips to respond to tricky questions?

It's both. Media coaching happens here because the media presence is big here. There aren't any talking points provided. There are topics we are advised not to talk about, but it's a use your best judgement type of situation. To be honest, the coaches don't spend a lot of time telling players what to talk about because they already have a lot on their plates. For tricky questions, you usually go to complimenting your opponent and talking about how hard your team works and how much you love your teammates.

OSU has been increasing in fouls each game. First game, FAU 7 penalties (I think we can chalk this up to first game learning curve), UC 2 penalties, Indiana 5, Miami 6, Nebraska 6, MSU 10. They've been going up each game. The Buckeyes were flagged 10x, and most of those were ticky tack fouls.

It's not a national secret, that the polite teams get flagged less. Do you think Ryan needs to bring these team down to earth and work on sportsmanship before it gets out of control? Or do you think this was an element of a solid B1G fest and there is nothing to worry about?

I don't think B1G refs are the greatest but whatever. I think unsportsmanlike flags have no excuse. It's stupid and preventable. Have the ability to know when enough trash talking is enough because the refs will let it go a lot of times. Procedure, substitution and pre-snap flags are also bad. Preventable as well. But if you're playing hard and get a foul (Baron  Browning) I have no problem with it. If you get a P.I. to prevent a touchdown, that is a smart play (but don't get beat).
