Here we go.

If this current team stays on course expect some rb’s to flip too.

Ahh, you beat me to it, re: RB's. I'm still holding out hope for EJ Smith. Just something about an NFL Hall of Fame running back coming to games donning scarlet and grey.

How’s that taste Alex Grinch?!?!

I guess the recruits aren't praising his efforts to turn Oklahoma into a top 50 defense like the media is.

Mr. Ricks, That sound is the window of opportunity closing. We would be so fortunate to get either one. Great things are ahead.

HS
BuckNut_1974's picture

Don'r think there will be room for both since it seems we will be taking 2 QBs this cycle. Maybe the staff knows that Ricks isn't going to flip. Hope they don't give up on him though.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

The staff will not stop recruiting Ricks; there's always going to be space for him. The difference between this staff and years of the past was that we would sometimes fixate on a certain player (see Watson, Deshaun) to the detriment of our overall position recruiting.

HS
Coach Hype's Hype Man's picture

I know Elias Ricks personally, no chance in hell he ends up anywhere other than LSU. He’s a great kid though!

HS

You gotta think it goes down like this....

Watts comes on official. OSU DB's say, "Look, would you rather go play for the guy that was coaching our secondary Last year or come play for the dude coaching our secondary THIS YEAR?"

Enough said...

HS
terryin20878's picture

Actually, I think Watts came to that conclusion himself. Day probably takes after Meyer in the, "We don't need to trash-talk the opposition", approach. Leave that to the desperate.

HS

Top DB prospect doesn't wanna go to OU.. I'm shocked. Lol. I hope we do get him.

It was a catch.

HS
Drewbdu's picture

I think it’s important to note that Ryan Watts is every bit as athletic as Elias Ricks.

Watts 40: 4.59

Ricks 40: 4.56

Watts shuttle: 4.07

Ricks shuttle: 4.21

Watts vertical: 38

Ricks vertical: 35

Watts weight: 187

Ricks weight: 188

Watts height: 6-2.5

Ricks height: 6-2

Ricks is much further along in his development, which is why he’s a five star and Watts is a mid four star, but given the same skill set, Watts would be every bit as good as Ricks. Obviously it’d be best to have the guy that’s the furthest along and the most athletic, but Watts is more than capable of being as good as Ricks with the right coaching.

HS
BluntedBrutus's picture

Thanks for the comparison! I really want Ricks in the class but Watts will be a baller too.

"Conversely, Urban Meyer and his players are an unstoppable army of football automatons that feel no emotion and win in any and every setting."

HS
JarheadBuck's picture

I'd love to have both or either, thanks for the info.

6-2.5, 187 ??? I trust Mick and the staff, but those stats make me wonder if: a) he's never seen a sammich -or- b) after a couple years in the dojo how his size and the above stats might change.

HS
terryin20878's picture

Most HS players aren't at their eventual college playing weight. Probably all of them. Remember the before-and-after pics of Joshua Perry?

HS
Larryp713's picture

6-2.5 187 for a HS Junior is insane size. I am sure that kid is going to dominate his senior season at any position he plays. You can rest assure his college playing weight will be at least 215 with that frame.

Respectfully,

Larryp713

HS
Brandon26841's picture

I was thinking the same thing. 187 is actually pretty good size for a high school CB. A lot of high school WRs and DBs seem to play in that 170-180 lb range. It's not until they're in their 2nd year or so in a college S&C program do they get to their final playing weight of 190 - 210 lbs.

HS
gobucks1966's picture

Thank you for the stats on the two players but most of us know either of the numbers given are true to the real thing. Coach's have lied about those things for years but they are probably close in size and speed so we are talking apples or oranges between the two. Same goes talent wise unless your a Wilson or a Fleming type player they are probably close there too after all someone has to be no.5 and no.10 in a ranking with very little difference. What will make the difference in my eyes is who will work harder to be better and fit the system and chemistry of the team. Many a elite player are ego and head cases and hurt team chemistry. Either way I'm sure that's all been looked at and either one will probably be just fine and do well here. Back to the numbers it's funny how some kids times in the pro combines are not near the reported times as when they got here. Very few are as fast in the 40 when they leave here. The only true times are the ones that ran track in high school others are fixed more than not.

Denny

HS
BuckNut_1974's picture

There is way more to playing CB than numbers. There are a lot of players that are very similar on paper, but are night and day different on the field. As you said, Ricks is further along and potentially has a higher ceiling of the two.

HS
Rockfordbuckeye's picture

Smart move because it’s obvious osu will prepare him for the NFL much better.

Right, OU isn't exactly known for its defense, more like the lack of it.

Zach, do you think OSU will make another try for Nebraska OL commit Turner Corcoran? He was apparently Coach Stud's favorite prospect before he committed to Coach Frost.

Can we get Hafley and Hartline to head up RB recruiting? It shouldn't take until signing day to get 1 RB, and at Ohio State we shouldn't have to get our 7th or 8th option. Every other position group is recruiting at a much higher level over the last 2 years.

Mountains

HS
PhillyNut's picture

I think patience is needed here. Last year probably confused a number of recruits as to exactly what will be the role of running backs at Ohio State despite Weber having a good year and Dobbins was not exactly terrible. With Day now as the head coach I am betting some of the top backs wanted to see how running backs would be used. Now going into week 6 the Buckeyes have the #2 back in the country. That should help with the recruiting.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

HS
analyticalguy's picture

The offense this year and it's production may yet produce a flip of a top player before signing day. If not, we'll at least get a RB with development potential (thinking Teague 2 years ago) and have an opportunity for a top 2021 recruit.

HS
tbirnbrich's picture

Agreed, I really think we need to preach patience. When Dobbins leaves, Teague will be a very solid and productive back, like Hyde was. Even if we don't land our no.1 option this year there's always ext years to 5* chase. With our OL, WR, and QB recruiting, the RB position can be a little more of a plug and play if needed. Alford has done a lot in his time here with no 5* recruits, remember that. We'll be fine.

Teague will be a superstar next year.

Urban Meyer >Jim Harbaugh for ever and ever, Amen. 0

HS
tbirnbrich's picture

I think Buckeye fans will love his running style. As much as we loved Zeke's speed, or Dobbins burst, everyone loves a guy that will lay the hit stick on a DB and that's Teague. That's why I'm not worried about the RB recruiting, historically we get the 7th best RB and turn them into a star.

I will pound and pound you until you quit

HS
gobucks1966's picture

Does Alford get any credit for a 3 star Zeke and the running of Dobbins this year. Getting great talent to water is one thing making them drink is another. I said all along this offense last year would turn backs away or at least make them think. From what I see now they better rethink because they will get their carries. I think too a lot of negative recruiting at the rb position has not only chased the elite away but even the Ohio kids. I would be very happy the Iowa St. recruit and the kid from Texas they will perform just as well as anyone else we could have here. Not a ton of difference in my eyes. Even Archie would of failed if not for a great line to block for him.

Denny

HS
BuckNut_1974's picture

Zeke was a 4* and Alford wasn't hired until 2015 so no. That isn't to say that he has been bad though.

A lot of these recruits are starting to take notice that Ohio State is for real. Personally I would like them to flip either Robinson or Milton. I'm sure the both of them are taking notice. The problem is there's going to be a lack of room as they're at 22 or 23 commits? and they need to address some other needs.

HS

After losing a DB to the Portal last week, we gained another spot but you are right another QB, RB and DL is in order.

HS
Ca114fire's picture

Imagine that. A DB that doesn't want to go where theres no defense ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

HS
Buckeye06's picture

He may have been the "bigger" CB we were looking at. Would think Phillips is the guy tasked with following around guys like Robinson/Moore in the middle and Lejond/Watts would be the outside guys.

Either way, the secondary is reloading with this class for sure

Not that Grinch pulled in any top recruits or anything.. but I bet Grinch is figuring out how hard it is to recruit defensive players to OU and remembering how easy it was at Ohio State.

The Future is Bright at Ohio State

HS
LeftCoastBuckeye's picture

I wasn't aware Grinch recruited anyone while he was here. Or did much of anything else judging else by the looks of it. Snark aside, did he?

My aim, then, is to whip the Weasels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom. - William Tecumseh Sherman (with apologies)

HS
buckslan's picture

He was responsible for landing Bryson Shaw, who I think is going to be a great one. But I think Shaw was more fixated on being a part of OSU rather than playing for Grinch.

HS
AZ Buckeye13's picture

That was one reason given for his release from Ohio State. For some reason he didn’t hit the recruiting trail very hard. Some said it was because he thought that Schiano was leaving and he would be the DC. Schiano ended up staying and Grinch was upset and wasn’t performing his duties as expected.

HS

Feel like they need him in this class. Could see Wade heading to the NFL.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS

Agreed, if Shaun Wade stays healthy this season, he will be selected in the first 3 rounds of the 2020 NFL draft. Not bad for a CB3.

Hopefully, Wade stays one more year to make himself a first round pick.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

I would have laughed at this at the beginning of the season as far as Wade sticking around one more year. The chance to make yourself so much better, though, and improve your draft stock, might actually be the route that is good to pass up for him. Day just crushed his off-season hires.

HS
buckslan's picture

I wouldn't jump the gun on that just yet. I think scouts want to see Wade play more man on the outside. No doubt the potential is there but he consistently needs to put it on tape. But I think he's coming back next year for that exact reason, so he can have a year of being the #1 corner on the team. It'll help his draft stock to be a top 10 pick.

HS
BUCKEYE3M's picture

After Saturday, it should be clear to anyone watching that a) Ohio State is back to churning out elite DBs and b) there will starting spots available next year.

I still feel like the Alex Grinch Experiment in Columbus was so clumsy and awkward that I don't know whether he is actually a good coach or not. I do know that a lot of eyes will be on The Red River Rivalry this year to see if Oklahoma can actually slow down a very good offensive team in Texas. If Texas hangs 40 on them (even if they lose), then I think you can legitimately challenge Grinch's claim to being one of the Young Turks of DCs.

HS
BUCKEYE3M's picture

I also think that Oklahoma State and Kansas State are very much improved offensively. I have no idea about Baylor, or a healthy TCU, but I think that the Big XII is going to have enough offense for us to see whether or not they're fixing things defensively.
