Nothing against Muhammad but will be disappointed if Carton and Walker are not garnering the most minutes at the two guard positions.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

Muhammads numbers as a frosh were similar to Walkers as a soph at FSU.  Plus he's considerably bigger.  Carton can be a dynamic PG, but neither he or Walker are known for their shooting to this point.  I'm sure we will see the two of them on the floor together depending on situation, but it would shock me if its part of the regular rotation.

For overall talent getting minutes, you're probably right.  Still, I think Walker and Carton are the only true PGs on the team, while SG is a little deeper (with some progression) between Muhammed, Jallow and Duane.  For me, best case is that Muhammed lives up to 4-star potential and Walker/Carton go 60/40 at PG this year...

Said another way, SG is the "iffiest" position and PG is strong if Carton and Walker play there

Jallow played zero mins at SG last year and I am not sure that changes next year. I know he played plenty of mins at SG his freshmen year, but there were also only 3 guards total: CJ Jackson, Andrew Dakich, and Kam Williams.

I think if Musa plays any mins at the SG, it will be due to an injury or suspension to Muhammad or Washington.

I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.

I think you need to be prepared to be disappointed . Luther is a good BB player, and the best D player on the team  and I expect him to do well . He was the best player in the back court last season  even though he hit a wall. He is also  in the shooting guard position as opposed to CJ and DJ being in the PG position. There is no doubt the chance both PG's could play at the same time but I think that will be limited .

Why? Muhammad is very good and showed how much potential he has in many games last year

What? Well you are gonna be disappointed then. Luther is the easy starter at SG he's arguably the best defensive player on the team and shot much better from 3 than anyone thought he was going to last year. We don't need to start such a small backcourt of Walker and Carton they will both get plenty of playing time regardless.

Don't see  the 2 PG's on the floor together much especially early in the season, Luther will play the 2 and 3 some. Have you seen Carton play yet or are you going on the Ex5 star rating? The kid has to earn his PT. I don't see him as a big time scorer, he will be hard pressed to out play Walker at first. I see Carton more like an Aaron Craft with a jump shot type athlete, good defender, strong body, leader. You have to have depth at every position especially PG, that is why I think they split time most of the time.

HS

I loved Craft as much as anyone, but Carton is a much better creator and finisher.

I do think the pg pt will be pretty even, but I see Carton getting the bulk of the minutes because of his ability to create.

You'll see 4 guards on the floor, especially if they need to close out games. It's unlikely you see 2 pg on the floor most of the time.

I hate this point in the year.  Excited about basketball starting, but don't want to wish away football season.  Hope these kids are ready to turn some heads early with the non conference schedule they have coming up.

Ohio State nailed it when they hired Holtmann. Looking forward to the season.

We need Ahrens to play and improve on defense, he is by far the best outside shooter on this team, he showed last year he can go off get hot and be unconscious as a scorer,  I think in time this guy will be dynamite off the bench!!

HS

Bad news hearing he is injured, I think this may be a make or break season for him. If he not in the regular rotation by December he will be buried on the bench and may be looking elsewhere for playing time considering the competition for playing time.

Interested to see what progress Young has made on offense, he needs more than a 2 foot layup in his game. he has been banged up and played against bigger guy most of the time

HS

He has such a limited role, it's impossible to say he's the best shooter on the team. Unless you think one game a career makes. You have it backwards, he needs to improve on defense to play. He couldn't improve enough on defense over the summer to make that happen. He's 6 minutes a game, if that. Who's he going to play over? He's still behind last year's guys, and he's not playing over these freshmen. Where's he going to get his minutes? At another school?

I wonder if bad backs can run in families? I've never heard of kids so young, having so many back issues.

I think Walker kwill start at the point. He's a veteran who knows our system and the players. Carton will get every chance to show what he can do but Walker has 2 years of college experience against quality competition. Luther is a good player. If his new baseline exceeds his better play last year then he will be a big part of the team.

HS
gr8bucks's picture

Walker should start the season, counting last year he has 3 years of college ball. He should be more steady than the frosh, but both will make the bucks a better team.

Gonna be interesting to see if Gaffney gets minutes more as a stretch 4, or as an oversized wing.

HS

Agreed. Also gonna be interesting to see how many meaningful mins he gets. Justin Ahrens lingering back issue, and the overall health of SF-PF positions, will likely make a big difference.

I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.
