Daniel Jones Named NY Giants Starting QB...

Eli was obviously disappointed

I imagine that would be more accurate when read as, "Eli was pretty pissed off."

Now we will find out if the Giant's brass is as smart as they think

I know our fans hated the Giants GM for passing on Haskins, but Jones himself didn't do anything wrong.  So good luck to him.

HS
BuckeyeChief's picture

The bigger aspect is that they needed linebackers and should have drafted one, and got Jones later on in the first.

HS
tcm1968's picture

And he was CLEARLY QB1 among all the new QBs in the pre-season. It's the preseason and all but he was really good..

Go Bucks!

Makes sense.

I hope you are paying attention, Dan Snyder.

As high of a ceiling as Haskins has Keenum hasn't been playing as poorly through the first two weeks as Eli has. Either way if the Skins keep losing and the longer Gruden sticks with Case the more likely he is to lose his job at the end of the year (which is ultimately what most Skins fans want).

HS
Hovenaut's picture

Keenum has played as well as could have been expected.

With no run game, and a defense playing like total shit below expectations, the calls for Haskins will continue to grow.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Which defies logic. Haskins being out there isn't magically going to improve a run game hinging on a fossilized AP and a defense playing like shit (how did that work out for us last season)? Keenum is the least of WAS's problems right now.

HS

Yeah - I kid about DC making the move to Haskins right now, there really isn't a need. It would be desperation for Jay Gruden, who's pretty much a dead man walking right now.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Gruden seems to have no clue whatsoever what he has in Haskins (which likely means he won't be around to reap the benefits in the long run). Hence the team continuing to waste a roster spot on an injured Colt McCoy.

Or healthy scratching AP against Philly.

Or failing to move on (entertain sound offers) for Trent Williams.

Or realizing (thankfully) McLaurin can probably do more than just land a special teams spot (thanks for stopping by, Josh Doctson).

Or staying resigned at DC with Greg Manusky, since no one else they interviewed in the offseason wanted the gig.

Another year, another shitshow. I thank the powers above I am an Ohio State fan.

Or he knows what he has and is protecting it from being Derek Carr’d or Tim Couch’d.

The Dwayne Train ain’t saving their season so let him sit and protect the potential, draft a line and some receivers and then hope Snyder sticks with you because you have a plan.

HS
Dstacify's picture

There's nothing to gain for Gruden by sitting Dwayne. If they have a bad season and Case starts every game he's not returning as HC in 2020 (that's pretty much a given at this point, unless Gruden gets the team to the playoffs and further he's gone after this season). If he's smart and realizes Dwayne gives the team a better chance to win for the sake of saving his job he needs to be playing.

I don't see any benefit to throwing Haskins out there before the Patriots game.  Belichick would just destroy his confidence.

HS
Dstacify's picture

I wish the kid well (and he did look impressive in preseason). That being said he has the worst group of WRs in the NFL to throw to atm. That's going to make things exceedingly difficult for him.

HS

As much as I love Haskins, he is not a magic fix for the Redskins. Throwing him to the wolves too early could make things rough too.

My son (now 9) didn't even know who Eli was, what position he played, for what team, etc. and just showing him that face cracks him up every time.

The Giants better be worried about keeping Jones healthy with all the QBs that have gone down in only two weeks of the season.

Perhaps they should trade Eli to Pittsburgh lol.

They obviously aren't going anywhere with that defense, so they might as well let the new guy take over.

Maybe they can trade Eli to the Saints or Steelers ...

(or the Jets)

God trading Eli to the Jets would be so awkward for the Maras given that the Jets and the Giants share a stadium lol.

Not going anywhere with that head coach either

Going to be interesting to see if any club finally bites and gives Kaepernick a shot. Even if his skills are less than his wonder season it is hard to imagine justifying that he is not better than Hodges who the Steelers pulled from their practice squad or Luke Falk who was third string on a bad Jets team.

He's 31, he hasn't played since what, 2016?  The last part of his last year was dreadful.

Teams are willing to take a lot of chances on a lot of players, some of whom are extremely unsavory ... but they won't bring the media circus to town for those kind of numbers.

I agree but it will be interesting to see if the NFL will continue to allow clubs to ignore him and risk the wrath of politicians and others including possible lawsuits.  I am assuming they feel pretty good about where they stand legally otherwise I would think that they would have already pressured clubs to look at him.

HS

But their settlement with him may have included him not pushing to come back so that may also be why there has not been any more said.

The league can't tell team owners which players they have to sign / spend their own money on.

The very last part may have been ugly but right now his QBR for that season would be 15th in the league this year among starters. 16 tds and 4 INTs. The Jets #2 guy had a 30 QBR in 2017 and was out of the league in 2018. I am not advocating for him but the stats do not support the teams not bringing him in.

Sure it does when he wants paid starting QB money and let’s not forget that his girlfriend screwed his chance when Baltimore decided not to sign him.

My personal take is that Eli has needed replaced for a long time, but there are so few good QBs out there so he has survived longer than he probably should have.

HS
Eph97's picture

Haskins should be starting. 90% of 0-2 teams don't make the playoffs and Case Keenum is not their future.

HS
kareemabduljacobb's picture

If he never starts another game he'll finish his career 116-116.

HS

And this guy has 2 Super Bowl Rings.

HS
bd2999's picture

He has had stretches of being pretty solid in those runs and then pretty bad as well. In the end he was an average to maybe a bit above average QB in the grand scheme of things. His record is about as average as it gets.

Just a good example that the QB can make a difference for sure but is not always the reason a team wins a SB. Heck, Trent Dilfur has a SB ring and Dan Marino did not. Not sure it is up for debate who is the better passer of those two.

HS
analyticalguy's picture

I've never understood why people want the standard for QB greatness to be Super Bowl wins. Sure, having a great QB (a la Brady, Montana) makes it easier to win a bunch of SBs, but great teams carry merely good QBs to championships (a la Steelers/Bradshaw and the 80s Redskins with the QB of the month club), and a great QB might not have a good enough team around him to win it all.

HS
bd2999's picture

Me neither. You rather have one than not but comparing championships is hard for football. It is a total effort. Even if the offense is much better or the defense. There have been many meh QBs that have wons SBs. Good on them, they were part of that, but to be honest they probably could have put most guys there and won one.

Other guys do indeed have much more talent but did not have the talent around them to go to the next level. Usually, your team is in trouble if the only reason your team is ok is because of the QB alone. It can work but if they go down you are SOL.

HS
BuckeyeChief's picture

I'm just sitting here laughing right now. Until Gettleman is gone I cannot support that team. IMHO, it would be great for Haskins to sit a year and learn, have the Skins upgrade their line and then roll.

I legit just had some co-workers claim Haskins was another Tebow, a run first QB who only succeeded because of good WR's. I told them they are no longer allowed to talk CFB with me.

HS
itownbuckeye's picture

Your co-workers must be Stephen A Smith disciples

HS
BuckeyeChief's picture

No sh*t when I told one of them I was going to start calling him Stephen A Smith, you know what he said? "STEPHEN A WAS A CAREER BACKUP! HE SAT THE BENCH!".

HS

Just as I expected him to respond. 'C'mon Man!' LOL

HS

I’ve read that those good WRs only succeeded because of Haskins and Hartline.

HS

I've got to say I'm rooting for this guy to play well. The amount of shit he took after being drafted was just ridiculous. It sort of drives me insane when people pretend to know how  a newly drafted player's career is going to turn out. He could be a damn Hall of Famer for all we know. Remember when fans boo'd the J.J. Watt selection?

He looked very good in the pre-season (yeah, yeah... I know) but the Giants are a mess. This could be ugly, but Jones is used to not having a good team around him so he'll probably feel right at home.

HS
BuckeyeChief's picture

FWIW, Giants fan were 50/50 on Haskins, but most wanted Josh Allen (Or Devin White if he was available).

Let the man finish his career as the starter. Gave that scrub franchise 2 SB wins. They will be even more terrible playing the new guy. Not much hope for the Giants in the foreseeable future no matter how good Jones might turn out to be.

HS

Horrible way to treat that man considering he isnt playing bad.

Gunner, speaking of a QB who isn’t playing bad...are you ready to concede on Hurts? Or are you still in wait and see mode? I told you he looked good when he came in for Tua last year in the SEC champ game! If Saban would have played Hurts over an injured Tua in the Natty, I think Bama may have won that game.

HS
GunnerBuck's picture

HAHA! He's definitely playing better than I thought he would but he's also played against horrible defenses, not that he'll play a good one until the bowl game or playoffs either way.

Before the season, I predicted Eli going home to the Saints. Seems even more likely now, but we shall see.

ohhhh good one. that'd be something. maybe if the Brees injury were more season ending but with this league who knows what can happen.
