Maybe the best cover band on the planet

RIP Ocasek

Along with their own great music, they’ve covered a bunch of genres and artists. Everything from ABBA and AC/DC to Zevon and ZZ Top, and so much in between, usually pretty damn well. It’s long, but, give this a scroll...

I enjoy a band paying respect and covering tunes.

Actually revisiting this I think Mike Masse may be the best at covers. Hope to catch him on tour one of these days.

Yup, but, he’s not really that much of an “original” artist. UM is first and foremost an “original” band that does a shitload of covers.

I’d see Masse in a heartbeat.

That Cars cover was not very good.

I agree. Not one of their strongest covers. I was just playing along.

Not trying to pile on GB, but I must concur. The bass player is mailing that one in from the start. Benjamin Orr changed his patterns so much when playing this song live. It's still pretty basic stuff, but he really textured the bottom end of the music with his playing instead of riding the same four notes until the chorus pops up.

My favorite band growing up . I liked his off the wall lyrics , I mean , chrome red eyeballs , I'm a psilocybin pony or You're a flick fandango phoney , you cant beat Ric when it came to writing . My personal favorite is Bye Bye Love , also, Dont Cha Stops real meaning is great , it didnt take my girlfriend at the time very long to figure that one out . Oh well , we're all getting older.

So freakin' good and delivered expertly by the figurative loins of that band.

I read somewhere recently after news of Ric's passing came out that he said when he felt needed to add a little bit of that innocent type of lower lip biting lust or seduction to the vocal he would have Benjamin sing it.

For those of us a certain vintage, one Cars song was a very important part of our coming of age....

I never bought a Cars album but I also never changed the station when they came on the radio. And who can forget the "Moving in Stereo" scene from Fast Times at Ridgemont High?

1984 was one hell of a year in music.

Too young to know The Cars in their prime, but love their music! RIP Ric.
Arguably one of BGSU's most famous attendees as well.

While I prefer Lakewood’s own Benjamin Orzechowski (Orr) singing lead for the Cars, Ocasek was still an integral part of a classic band.

Can’t believe Orr has been dead almost 20 years.

Love LOVE LOVE the Cars!!!  Sad news on the loss of a great music icon.  Music today cannot carry the sweat from the jock strap of these guys.

Living the life!  Go Buckeyes!  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
