Happy for Hilliard. Wish he had a more of an injury-free career because I always thought the dude could play. Fast and hits like a truck when healthy. Hope he experiences a great senior season.
I am pleasantly surprised to see him back. Thought I had read that he might miss the entire season. Hopefully he can make the most out of his final season.
Fields of Dreams
Hillard is nice to see back but hope he can stay healthy. Wonder what Cooper's time table is. Not that it needs to be rushed but the DL only gets better with him on it.
Imagine he's back either next week or for Nebraska. Would be shocked if he missed the next two games.
Cooper has a high ankle sprain. Those are probably the most difficult injury to produce an estimate on. Some guys are out 2 weeks and some are out 2 months.
The fact that he was practicing a little leads me to think he's close though. But I'd be shocked if he comes back for Miami (unless he just rotates in a few snaps to try to get his feet wet). I'd bet he comes back for Nebraska.
I'd bet on a Nebraska return too.
Couldn't have said it better
I expected a lot more excitement from Gill coming out of high school. I wonder if we will see less and less of players in this mold now that Urban is gone.
Pain of Discipline
Pain of Regret
Take Your Pick
These guys that played exclusively RB in high school that have had to transition to the H position have never been quick transitions. Campbell, McCall, Dontre Wilson... even Curtis Samuel took until year 3 to break out. 2020 should be Gill's year to break through; there's just too many better receiving options ahead of him right now.
Samuel was really the back up running back his freshman year, and was damn good at it to.. But your right on with the rest..urban liked his speed rbs to play the H. I think mookie Cooper is going be the perfect fit for the H when he gets here... The speed and already playing the role in highschool, well hopefully this year for him also
I wonder if the H is more or less just going to become a slot receiver essentially. Have they ever really commented on that?
Samuel was really the only guy they've ever had at H where you could say he was a true RB/WR hybrid. The rest were just slot receivers that got the occasional pop pass behind the LOS every once in a while. Hill and Sanders aren't getting any carries anytime soon. I wonder if they'll even continue to recruit those hybrid guys for that spot anymore.... isn't Cooper pretty much strictly a WR for his high school?
I am thinking your right about it just being the slot instead of having a true H anymore...gill is kinda in the mold of Samuel but he hasn't got to show much this year yet,but I do expect big things from him.. Other then Samuel and gill and I guess parris last year was kinda wr/rb hybrid but other then that, I don't remember to many players who you could say are a hybrid... Mookie from what I have read and watched is a classic slot receiver.. I don't think he has got a chance to play his senior year of high school because of his transfer tho..
Gill is just buried by a lot of deep WR talent atm (with KJ essentially starting at the H-Back spot though he plays like much more of a true WR than an H-Back). With KJ off to the NFL after this season expect Gill may be in line to start at H-Back next year.
Save Cooper for next week. Let him get some live reps and then he will be ready for Nebraska
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
Pretty surprised but glad to see Hilliard:
a) Return from an Achilles rupture so soon? I know Borland did essentially the same thing and came back even quicker, but I thought Borland's was more of an injury to the Achilles instead of a full rupture. So I'm guessing this was more along the lines of what Borland dealt with? Am I wrong in thinking that Achilles tears almost always require a full year of recovery minimum or are these just not full ruptures?
b) playing at the Bullet spot. I get that there's not really a place for him in the LB depth chart and he's a pretty good athlete, but still surprising to see him there.
Borland did essentially the same thing and came back even quicker sooner,
Eleven Warriors posters might disagree with that assessment...so I FIFY
There really isn't much depth at the Bullet position so I can see why they list him there.
Man, I really wanna see CJ play in his Senior season as captain. Is it ever gonna happen? :/
Completely agree......I feel so bad for him.
All of the hard work and effort to get where he is, and missing games his last season. Hoping that he gets back on the field soon.
Whenever I see CJ Saunders, I see a future Julian Edelman, Wes Welker, Anthony Gonzalez type player. Wouldn’t be shocked to see CJ drafted by the Patriots as a steal in Round 6.
I like Saunders just as much as anyone else, but if receivers like Jalin Marshall and Johnnie Dixon aren't getting drafted I think it'll be pretty difficult for Saunders as well. It's hard to get drafted into the NFL, and I know people love to automatically connect any white slot receiver to the Patriots...
But it's not impossible. I just think Saunders needs to get healthy quick and play a lot in the WR rotation this year for that to even be remotely possible. When you comb through the annual list of undrafted players it's insane how many great college players don't get drafted. I'm hoping he gets healthy soon, but walking around on crutches is usually not a good sign.
i see what you did there
I prefer Tyreke Smith to be the starter on the other side instead of Cooper. The kid is young and was a top 100 national recruit. Keep letting this kid free and he can take over as the Dline's best player next season after Chase leaves.
Anything you want you should have
I don't think it really matters which one starts. If Tyreke continues to impress as he has early, he will get his reps. More depth and fresher bodies.
If you have two people that agree on everything, that only means one of them is not thinking at all.
Tyreke definitely has more upside but both guys played well last season and are assets to this defensive line.
Love Smith too, but saying he should start because he was top-100 isn't a reason. Coop was 5 star himself.
Being the "Starter" on the DL really doesn't mean anything other than you play the 1st series. The way they are rotating guys in they all play similar amounts of snaps.
Very good point
Bummer to see Cooper still on the injury report, but I get it. No sense in rushing him back in a lesser B1G game, need to make sure he's ready for Nebraska.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Great news for Hilliard (I wasn't expecting him back until midseason). Hopefully Mattison and Washington find a way to incorporate him into the defense (they're already using a bit of a rotation at LB with Borland and Browning atm).
I hope HIlliard can have a great year in whatever role he has. I have enjoyed him blowing people up on kickoffs and would just fine watching some more of that.
Hopefully Hilliard will flourish under the new coaches and scheme similar to Browning. Hate to see a guy get injured and suffer from bad coaching. Hopefully he can play well enough to garner some interest from NFL teams.
Thanks for the note about Wint. I feel like I remember that play on kickoff, I just didn't realize who it was that got leveled. I thought the hit could have been flagged bc it was nasty.
Really hope that Hilliard can make an impact sometime this year. I remember the day that he and Cornell committed and the excitement around here. Cornell is really stepping up this year and would love for Hilliard to be able to end his buckeye career on a high note. He is a physical freak just can't stop getting injured sadly.
Still amazed that Wint got a scholarship here. Haven't seen anything from him that justifies him seeing playing time.
It's crazy how we've not been able to get our two best DE's on the field at the same time for years.
A gentle reminder to BE NICE. Plays guitar and makes iced tea in the winter.
